Feeding The FlockSubmitted By Father Tim Harrison

The liturgical readings during Advent are chosen not only to remind us of Jesus’ humble beginnings in Bethlehem, but also to point us toward His glorious return. Most of us are in a position of both wealth and poverty. There are always those who have more than us, as well as those who have less. Advent challenges us to be sure that where we are “wealthy” – whether it be materially, intellectually or socially – we never lord it over anyone else. After all, our fortunes can change in an instant. And where we are “poor”, we should be on guard against envy or resentment of those who have more. That’s what we should not do. But what should we do? First and foremost, stay on the path God has laid out for you. Keep moving forward, and let the Lord – your just judge – sort out the self-sufficient from the needy, both around you and within your own heart. You may find yourself walking over some ruins, but don’t let that become an occasion for boasting. Rather, keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, pray for the unjust, and keep walking humbly with God. As you do, you will be building the city of God here on earth, inviting the just and the unjust to join you. “Jesus, mold my heart in all humility so that I can hear the cry of the poor and tend to their needs. May You find me on the just path when You return in glory!”

District Deputy’s DissertationsBy S/K Alain Langlois A new year is coming and I am gaining momentum for the upcoming year. I would like to bring in a ‘New Year’ resolution that will see us do much more to promote awareness of the Knights of Columbus in our communities. I would like to see posters in churches, schools and various community buildings showing what the Knights are doing and what we are all about. Let’s take digital photos of our numerous events and projects and gather them up in a nice poster format for everyone to see. We are doing something great; our programs are vibrant and active. Everybody should be aware of it. This year is the year of the volunteer and the year of the priesthood. The lay apostolate call for duty and active participation in church related activities is more important now in response to the changing world around us. The church must remain active in order to survive. The prime responsibility of the Knights of Columbus is to promote and encourage all participants. Parish round tables, evangelization and vocations are of the utmost importance. Finally, I would like to take a moment to emphasize to all knights the importance of our service program. All Grand Knights have been asked to expand the great works their councils do in every community. The ultimate goal is to integrate each council’s membership fully within the church and the surrounding community. The program will allow the membership a chance to participate in worthwhile projects and, in so doing, aid in the recruitment of high caliber members. Please keep this in mind as you keep these programs high in the Knights of Columbus agenda for the upcoming year. Vivat Jesus! Alain Langlois DD# 57 A blonde buys a coffee at Tim Horton's. She rolls up the rim and screams, "I've won a motorhome! I've won a motorhome!" The waitress says, "That's impossible. The biggest prize is a GMC Envoy." The blonde says, "No, it's not. It says "W I N A B A G E L".

Editor’s Note:

At the request of Grand Knight Larry Judge, the publishing date of the fall issue of the Knightly News was delayed to allow the inclusion of the proposed annual budget data for Council 1049. Unfortunately, the work schedule of the editor further delayed the issuance of the fall newsletter. Please accept the editor’s apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Grand Knight’s Report Continued from Page 1 The key points for this year are as follows: 1. As proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI, this is “The Year of the Priest”. Please keep our priests and vocations into the priesthood in your prayers. Also, please remember to offer assistance to the Churches when they have special events. There was only one Knight signed up to move the chairs from the Church for the John Bosco craft sale. 2. Bill C-384, a bill to legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide, was a concern over the summer. This bill was introduced for the third time by a member of the Bloc party and it now appears it will not have support from any of the other parties. 3. State has asked all councils and assemblies to try and have a larger presence in their church and civil communities. As the year progresses we will be doing some new things and supporting some new groups in order to accomplish this challenge. 4. “Keep Christ in Christmas” is being heavily promoted by both Supreme and State. Our council started last year to heavily promote this theme and will continue again this year with buttons, lawn signs, magnets, posters in our schools and churches, and hopefully something new for our churches. As we all know, the politicians are bending over backwards in order to appease the minority. As Christians we must do whatever we can to not allow our freedoms and beliefs to be silenced. Your executive is looking forward to another successful year with new members and some new faces at our functions and meetings. Vivat Jesus! S/K Larry Judge

Get To Know Your Brothers This column is intended for all members to get to know more about their brothers. Submissions including oddities and unique experiences are most welcome; they are wonderful to read. Please submit articles using a “Top Ten” format. Enjoy!

Deacon William (Bill) Heasley

1. Once upon a time, Bill was born in Brockville. He attended both St. Francis Xavier and BCI. 2. In 1952, Bill married his wife Dorothy; and together, they raised six children after they built their home on Stewart Boulevard. 3. Bill worked at Phillips Cables for 40 years. “What was I thinking?!” 4. Deacon Bill’s interests over his lifetime have all brought great joy into his life, with his wife Dorothy sharing in the highlights. 5. When the Knights of Columbus decided to sponsor a Boy Scout group at St. Francis Xavier parish in 1949, Bill was asked by Grand Knight Ab. Lunman to be Scoutmaster. Bill stayed with the 8th Brockville Scout group for the next 30 years. 6. Bill became involved with the St. Vincent de Paul Palliative Care Services as a volunteer. He spent 20 years as a volunteer with the Palliative Care services. He later founded and organized the 30 Hour Palliative Care Telethon. 7. It was during his time as a Palliative Care volunteer that Bill received his call to the diaconate. On September 2, 1995, he was ordained a Deacon at St. Mary’s Cathedral and was posted to St. John Bosco parish. 8. Deacon Hank Gray and Bill helped to establish a low income restaurant called Loaves & Fishes. 9. Bill was asked to go back to school shortly after Father Tim Harrison came to St. John Bosco parish. St. John Bosco and J.L. Jordan school visits became Deacon Bill’s new ministry. The schools still form his main ministry. 10. In Bill’s words, “Being a Knight is an honour, a privilege and a joy.”

Happy 82nd Birthday Deacon Bill Heasley!! During the soiree after the John Sands concert had concluded, many of those in attendance offered their best wishes to Bill. Note the smoke still lingering in the air when this shot was taken. May God grant you excellent health for many years Bill!

John McGeough

1. John was born in Goderich, ON, but his family of eight moved to Scarborough when he was just beginning school. He was actually able to watch the construction of the CN tower.

2. John attended St. Michael’s Choir School in downtown Toronto from grades 5 – 9. What a voice!

3. After high school, John attended the University of Western Ontario in London. He met his future wife Karen on a train while both were travelling to London before their first year.

4. In 1985, John graduated with Chemical Engineering degree, and returned to Toronto to find work.

5. In 1986, he and Karen were married and they lived and worked in Toronto for a short time.

6. In 1986, John got a job as a production supervisor at the Parke-Davis plant in Brockville. Karen relocated to town a few months later, found employment at DuPont as a chemical process operator, and they purchased a home just outside of town. John progressed into several roles with Parke-Davis including Safety/Environmental Leader and Engineering Manager.

7. Karen and John have two children – Jeanette, 20, and Jared 18. Both children attended school in Brockville and graduated from St. Mary high school. Growing up, both kids were busy with many activities and this kept both parents hopping with a multitude of volunteer functions. Daughter Jeanette grew up singing and dancing; she is now in her third year of the Health Sciences program at McMaster University. Son Jared grew up constantly playing sports; he is currently enrolled in his first year of business studies at the University of Guelph.

8. Karen and John are currently adjusting to life as empty nesters. Karen is active in the Thousand Island Ladies Barbershop chorus and quartet. John began to learn guitar last year, and enjoys playing the blues.

9. In 2007, John started a consulting company that specializes in safety and environmental compliance work. He enjoys wearing the many hats required by small company owners, and hopes to grow the business and expand customers going forward.

10. John joined the Knights in 2007 and currently has his second degree. He is looking forward to becoming more involved with the local Knights activities now that he has more time available.

Brother Knights, I trust your summer and fall were enjoyable. Congratulations to the new executive for 2009 / 2010! My name is Robert Belton and I am your new Fraternal Counselor for the Knights of Columbus. I look forward to serving my Brother Knights with honesty and integrity. Regarding my involvement with the Knights of Columbus, I am a former Chief Squire with the Columbian Squires. I have been a member of the Knights of Columbus for 18 years. During that time I have served on several executives in a number of different capacities. In June 2009, I was exemplified to the Fourth Degree. I come to this vocation through years of service in helping others. For 10 years I have been a Funeral Director. I know first-hand the problems and situations that families are left with when a loved one passes away. Time after time, I saw wives and husbands wondering “what now?” When my Fraternal Counselor approached me with the topic of recruitment, I began to think that this would be the opportunity to do my part to correct the “what now?” and be able to assist my Brother Knights and their survivors. Now I am charged with the duty and opportunity to be able to lessen the shock of going ahead in the world when two becomes one. Being given the privilege of serving my Brother Knights and their families in their most trying time has prepared me to carry on that responsibility to serve you now. An opportunity that I look forward to and one I take seriously. I look forward to meeting with all of you in the months ahead to introduce myself personally. May God Bless you, your families, the Knights of Columbus and the exciting year ahead. VIVAT JESUS! Robert Belton Fraternal Counselor 613-658-2470

Graveside Piper

As a young piper, I was asked by a funeral director to play at a grave-side service for a homeless man with no family or friends. The funeral was to be held at a cemetery way back in the country, and this man would be the first to be laid to rest there. I got lost and arrived an hour late. I saw the crew eating their lunch near the backhoe, but the hearse was gone.

I apologized to the workers for my tardiness, and stepped to the side of the open grave, where I saw the vault lid already in place. The workers gathered around, still eating their lunch. I played out my heart and soul.

As I played, the workers began to weep. I played, and I played, like I'd never played before. I closed the lengthy session with Amazing Grace and walked to my car.

As I was opening the door and taking off my coat, I overheard one of the workers saying to another, 'Lard Jeezuz b'y, I never seen nothin' like that before and I've been puttin' in septic tanks for twenty years.'

Program Director’s Report By Dave Cody

Brothers, Our 2009/2010 Fraternal Year is off to a booming start! The John Sands Concert and the Installation of Officers took place in September. We are in the midst of the Doll House Raffle courtesy of Chair John McGeough and the fine workmanship of Dave Crawford. Alex McLeod has his team ready for the Ham and Turkey Raffle at St Mary High School on October 24. The Raffle will feature the draw for the Doll House. The month of November will be busy! The Mass for Deceased Brothers will be held at St. John Bosco on Thursday, November 5th at 7:00 p.m. Brother Matt Wren is our Chair for Special Programs. November will also see the Remembrance Day Ceremony and Parade by Brothers and Sir Knights. The Knights of Columbus are one of the few organizations invited to parade on that day. Brothers Dave Cody and Len Libitz will be the contacts for the November 11th ceremonies. The Blood Donor Clinics have been active throughout the Fall. Christmas is just around the corner and so are the Christmas Card Sale and Keep Christ in Christmas theme. The Santa Claus float will also see the Knights of Columbus banner in the Brockville parade. Degree Ceremonies are being held for the 1st and 2nd degrees in Prescott on the same evening. Please plan to attend and support our new candidates and their spouses. The Salvation Army kettles will need our support this year. Our December meeting will be a dinner meeting and a great time to come out and wish your Brothers the best of the Season. We want to thank all Brothers and their families who participated and supported the above programs. The last half of the fraternal year, January to June, is shaping up to be another eventful period. We will be starting off with the Palliative Care Telethon. More news at eleven! Dave Cody, PGK Program Director Knights of Columbus Council 1049

The Miracle

One morning a man comes into church on crutches. He stops in front of the holy water and splashes some of it on both of his legs, then throws away his crutches.

An altar boy witnessed the episode and runs to tell the priest what he'd just seen.

Without batting an eye, the priest says, "Son, you've just witnessed a miracle. Tell me, where is this man?"

“Flat on his back, Father, over by the holy water.”

Happy 50th Anniversary

A 50th Anniversary reception was held for fourth degree, Council 5880, Bernie Currier, and his lovely bride, Beverley on Saturday, October 10th at the Prescott Golf Club. It was extremely well represented by parishioners of St. Mark Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus members from both Prescott and Brockville Councils. Thanks to Len Libitz who helped Debra get the "word" out. Thank you to all who were able to attend to make this event so memorable.

John Sands Concert - September 2

Fans of John Sands were happy to hear his performance at St. John Bosco Church on Wednesday, Sept. 2nd at 7:00 p.m. The concert lasted approximately two hours and included an eclectic programme of instrumental music including Celtic, light Classical, Sacred and popular songs from various hit shows. This was John Sands' second appearance here at St. John Bosco Church. His expertise at his Yamaha Concert Organ, coupled with his distinctive style, allowed him to create moods in music rarely heard on both sides of the Atlantic. His warm personality resonated between selections as he related stories of his personal experiences with a light touch of humour. This year we had an increase of 28% in paid attendance over last year. The total gate was $2,105.00. After expenses (total $211.97), the profit was $1,893.03. Therefore, $946.50 will be used for our charitable works and $946.50 will be donated to our Priests' Retirement Fund. Respectfully submitted, S/K Al Minifie

BINGO I wish to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt thanks to those 18 members who have loyally given of their time to assist me in volunteering at Bingo. These same Brother Knights have attended for the past several years. I am presently looking for more Brother Knights to come forward and assist us in working at the Bingos. The Bingo is one of our largest sources of revenue. At present, each member works at the Bingo three times a year. More volunteers will result in the load being distributed less often. Bingo runs every fourth Friday evening starting at 9:45 p.m., but members are asked to attend between 8:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. to start the sale of cards. Our numbers have dwindled to 16 because of health reasons and one member committed to other Knightly duties. So, please, consider coming out to help. I can be reached at 613-498-0161 if you have any questions or wish to volunteer. I will work around your schedule. Thank you to all, Stan Balemba

Camino de Santiago

Brother Paul Rochon and his wife Anna have graciously submitted the following article and pictures: What is the Camino de Santiago? It is the walk of St. James the Apostle. It is a pilgrimage across the northern part of Spain from France to the city of Santiago de Compostella. Having just returned with my wife Anne from walking 900 kilometers from the French border to Finisterra, I have to say it was one of the best adventures I have taken not only in the religious aspect but also in a cultural way. It is a walk that has been going on for a thousand years and in 1993, UNESCO gave the Camino the distinction of a World Heritage Site. What is troubling I found, most Europeans know the Camino de Santiago very well since childhood, yet few Canadians or Americans know about this life changing walk. It is rated as the third most important pilgrimage after Israel and Rome. It is a pilgrimage to honour St. James as his remains are in a silver coffin on display below the altar of the Cathedral. The Camino is 800 kilometers long with another 100 kilometers if you want to finish in Finisterra. It is a 31 day walk to Santiago doing about 25 kilometers per day without a break. Except for three days of flat terrain, you are up and down hills and mountains as part of your daily walking. If you choose auberges (alberques) for your accommodations, it is an inexpensive way to sleep and be prepared for the next day. People of all ages, from ages 16 to 82 years old were walking when we were there. It is a walk of a lifetime that will remain one of your highlights of your life. You don't have to be in super shape to walk this. If I can do it, most of you can also do it. The internet has a multitude of information on the Camino and either Anne or I would be glad to talk about this wonderful pilgrimage to anyone who is interested. If you have the time and any interest in doing this pilgrimage, I urge you to do it, you will never regret it. Paul Rochon

I was honoured to receive an invitation to the official

blessing of the new St. Joseph Catholic school in Toledo, Ontario on October 8, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. I grew up in the area and my first cousin Pat Freeman was the principal at that school up until his sudden death in 2006. It’s a beautiful rural school with a new design. Most of the students attend St. Mary High School for their higher learning. Jack McNamee

Pictured at left are some of the flowers at one of the gravesites in St. Francis Xavier cemetery. After a slow cold wet spring, our flowers that the Knights planted have flourished. I have been up several times and have heard several favourable remarks . Chancellor Jack McNamee
