Message from our Principal, Ms Sam Penn

Persistent, Resilient and Optimistic

We are having another exciting term at the Academy as you will see from all of the articles within our newsletter. As always there are many things to be proud of.

Our Endeavour Learner programme is up and running and it has been wonderful seeing so many students teach each other new skills in their PSHE lessons. You don’t usually see students roller-skating in the corridor. 7MCS were amazing in assembly; it was so interesting to listen to them talk about their talents.

We are very much looking forward to both the WOW day and activity days at the end of term where we get to experience different environments and ways of learning. I would like to congratulate all the year 11 students for their hard work over the last year and in particular over the last few weeks. There were a few tears last Monday at the final assembly but I am sure they all enjoyed the Prom. We are looking forward to welcoming them back for their results. Have a lovely few weeks as we lead up to the summer holidays. I look forward to seeing you at the Summer Fair. Ms Penn

Redgrave House Since the last newsletter Redgrave have been activity pursuing the Endeavour Learner

philosophy. We want to ensure all students who leave our academy are lifelong learners who are ready for anything the future can throw at them. The key aspects of the programme are the 3 core strands: we want all students to be PRO learners. In life if you wish to be successful everybody needs to be PERSISTENT, RESILIENT and OPTIMISTIC. Without these core values how can anybody be emotionally and academically tough enough to be successful? Understanding what makes someone a good learner has been a very eye-opening part of the programme. All students have discovered what type of learner they are. Understanding this makes it much easier to take on board what they are trying to learn. A young person can either be a kinaesthetic, visual or auditory learner . It is important to understand that learning could involve just one or a mixture of all of these learner types. Knowing the best way to learn will ensure that home study, revi-sion and class learning will all be equally effective.

I wish you all a good Summer term and an enjoyable holiday. Mr Prior - House Director

ENDEAVOUR NEWS HOUSE UPDATES

Adlington House GCSE exams are over for this year and the academy seems quieter and a bit emptier.

The year 11 students have attended their final assembly and are heading off for induction days in sixth form and college. I was very impressed with the perseverance and effort put in by our students throughout the exam season.

Year 10 students are about to enjoy one week of work experience and a day at One as part of the Information and Guidance opportunities we offer to all students. They usually come back from these with a renewed focus as they realise how soon they will be joining the world of employment and training. The younger year groups are equally busy revising for end-of-year tests and assessments. These are not a reason to worry, but a chance for students to consolidate their learning and for teachers to identify the gaps in understanding or knowledge, which we need to work on next. Summer is definitely with us and will hopefully last right through to the final week of term when the whole academy will participate in a range of fun, educational and exciting activities.

Have a great summer. Mr Chartres- House Director

Holmes House I am proud to say that Holmes House are still winning the house point (vivo) race ahead of the other two houses. Our top 15 students with the most vivos are: Abbie McLaughlin, Holly Mae Rimmer, Amber Sparkes, Chloe Humble, Asudah Omar, Alice Walden, Alice Merry, April Stevens, Kerry Ann Allen, James Rashleigh, Ben Carter, Tiffany Hughes, Louis Baker, Alice Cherrington and Lucy Chambers. Well done to everyone and keep saving so you can buy yourself something from the on line Vivo shop. With only a few more weeks left of school, we have lots to pack into a small amount of time! Holmes are planning lots of fun stalls for the Summer Fair on 16th July and hopefully some will be entering our talent competition at lunchtimes in July too. The end of term will culminate in our WW1 Wow day and two fun packed activities days.

Mrs Baker - House Director

The after-school drama club is performing at The New Wolsey Theatre again this year as part of the “Youth Perform” festival. This year the theme is 'All the World's a Stage' celebrating William Shakespeare's 450th birthday. The drama club is performing on Thursday 3rd of July, performances begin at 7.30pm and tickets are available now or from the box office on the night.

If you have any Academy uniform that no longer fits or is no longer any use to you, especially if your child is in Year 11, we would be very grateful for any donations you could make. Please bring any items to the Reception office.

Jessica Thompson in yr 7 who came second recently at a Karate competition. She beat a brown belt and a black belt. Jessica is cur-rently a white belt so this is a real achievement.

James Rashleigh 7MCS who recently won a medal for 1st place in a Karate competition in Leicester for boys aged 12-13.

Feeling unwell who should I tell?

When a student is feeling unwell the procedure is quite clear. The student should tell a teacher, who will write a note to enable the student to go to the Reception office who will then contact the student’s parents. Please remind your child of this procedure, and impress on them not to ring you direct on their mobile phone as mobile phones should not be used for communication during lesson time.

These photos were taken at the Private View of the work by students on their first year of the two year Art GCSE and Photography GCSE course. Cameron Bridge and Adele Morley also came along and provided the entertainment with their amazing singing. The Curator of the exhibition was so impressed that Cameron has been invited back to sing at other Artists’ Private Views at the Town Hall.

Ormiston Endeavour Academy has been invited back to show more work by Art and Photography students. The event was also praised in the Ipswich Daily Star. It was a lovely event and during the three weeks of the Exhibition there were many positive comments made by the general public that attended, about the high standard and diversity of the work. Congratulations to all the GCSE Art and Photography students.

ENDEAVOUR NEWS

Over the past few weeks, nine Year 8 students have been selected to take part in the Sky Sports Living for Sport project, working with Cathy Churchyard from Thomas Wolsey and her KS2 students. The project aims to not only develop a variety of key skills (communication, leadership, team work etc.), but to also gain confidence in themselves and have a valuable experience with working with other people who have a range of individual needs. They have been given the opportunity to explore different sports, the equipment involved and how different people with a variety of disabilities can access these sports. They also spent a day working with Fran Williamson (ex-paralympian) and Mike Mullen (former BMX champion) to develop various skills that would help them run the sessions for the Thomas Wolsey students.

Fran Williamson, was so impressed with everyone here that she took the time to write to the local press. The following is a small extract of what she wrote:

“The vision and commitment of the teachers was plain to see it was wonderful to witness the energy and enthusiasm of all the pupils I met. They were keen to share their experiences and insights from their Sky Sports Living for Sport project it was fantastic to see the power of sport in improving young lives in action.

The young people I met on this visit were a credit to Ormiston Endeavour Academy and, as is so often the case in this job, I came away from the school feeling incredibly inspired myself. Different sports inspire different people but one thing is certain, there’s a sport for everyone and finding it can be life changing.

I hope that I have encouraged the pupils at Ormiston Endeavour Academy to find their sport, walk tall, aim high and stay focussed on reaching all their goals in life.”.

Can you help - we need bric- a -brac books and prize draw items for our Summer Fair. We would also be grateful for any home-made cakes that could be dropped off at the Reception office the day before for our cake stall.

Endeavour Learners - One Step Ahead - 7MCS A few weeks ago, students from 7MCS performed an assembly for Holmes House. It was a culmination of their previous efforts and learning. During last term, the students "shared" their hobbies, past times, research and learning with the rest of the tutor group. They taught the class roller skating techniques, magic tricks, football skills, boxing techniques, karate championship skills, drumming, a Harry Potter hat was made and showed videos of singing and demonstrations of craft making as well as being taught how to make origami objects and how to draw cartoons. 7MCS then "shared" all of this with Holmes House in the Assembly and demonstrated what an Endeavour Learner is even before the idea of how to be an 'Endeavour

On 16th May, Jamie Oliver did a live on line cook along session for

schools. Mrs Sewell’s yr 7 cookery group joined in and created some delicious food alongside Jamie on

The food looked and tasted really

yummy and they enjoyed the

experience and learnt new skills but

they think Mrs Sewell is much

WW1 Day at Endeavour and end-of-term arrangements.

On Monday 21st July all students will take part in our Wow day. To commemorate the centenary of WW1, each faculty is running different lessons about WW1, from paintings of the trenches to the realities of life on the front line. Finding out about our past is a vital way of understanding who we are today.

At the end of the day, we will have our celebration assembly and the following two days are our fun-packed Activities days.

A packed year of Endeavour events!

Over the past year, a lot of events have happened. We have had lots of civvies days, raising money for good causes. They are popular in school and everyone took part. Our Xmas fair and Christmas parcels were a big hit with the local community. Another event was the conference at Ipswich Town Football Club, where the ambassadors had leadership training. The year 9 big bang science trip, which all of year 9 seemed to enjoy, was also a great experience.

A group of ambassadors had a very recent meeting with Dr. Dan Poulter about the school and their opinion on the school, and what they do as an ambassador. They spoke about the trip to Ipswich Football Club and how it was a success, and then they spoke about the upcoming Anti-smoking week. They also spoke about how they were recruiting more ambassadors from the younger years and the new anti-bullying campaign. He was very impressed with the Ambassadors and said that he didn’t know of any other high school that has a student voice like ours!

An upcoming event is the anti-smoking week, which will help students think about the consequences of smoking and what it does to your body. We are looking forward to the anti-smoking week and hope you all enjoy it and learn from it.

Overall, we have been very pleased with all of the events that have gone on over the past year, especially having the ambassadors to help organise them. If any student wants to become an Ambassador, they need to apply to Mrs. Sewell or Mrs. Baker.

By Gabrielle Stones Yr 9 Student.

We are very excited to be running our first Ski and Snowboarding trip next year. During the Easter holidays week we will spend an all inclusive week in Tonale Italy at 3016m above sea level in a purpose-built ski resort with 29 lifts and 137km of piste. We will be staying in a 5 star hotel with massive breakfasts, 3-course dinners each day and hot food on the mountain range itself at lunchtime. If you need any further information please don't hesitate to contact Mr Prior at the academy.
