There will be a few changes, just like in all the areas of our lives lately. The biggest change is that Sun-day school will be outside (if weather permits). Please plan to dress accordingly. If the weather is bad, either a link to the lesson will be provided via email or the lessons will be done via Zoom video chat-ting. Just like for school, we ask you to bring your own art supplies (pencils, scissors, and either cray-ons, markers or colored pencils (your preference)). All students will be required to wear a mask. A tow-el or blanket will be helpful if the grass is wet.
We will resume Sunday school offering each Sunday. This will continue to support our sponsor child, Kenzie, through “Save the Children”.
All students interested in participating in the virtual “Crop Walk” on Oct 4th this year can sign up at the website, https://www.crophungerwalk.org/haddamct/
Finally, we will wrap up collecting school supplies in the middle of Sept. Please bring items to worship services. As always, we will collect food for local food banks all year and the food will be delivered monthly (after being quarantined.)
Thank you for your continued support. Stay safe and healthy!

Sunday School Corner Hello Sunday school students and families! I hope you have all stayed healthy and safe. It has been awhile since we have last been able to meet in person and in a classroom! All of the teachers and committee members have missed seeing you.
As of this moment, the Christian Education committee plans to resume Sunday school classes again on September 13th! We will also be handing out individually wrapped ice cream sandwiches instead of make your own ice cream sundaes at the conclusion of the lesson.

Rummage through our
Fall Jumble Treasure Sale
Unless circumstances change, we will have a Fall Fair on Saturday, October 3rd from 9-2. It will be held outdoors. Social distancing will be enforced and masks are required. The Fair will in-clude donated household items, food, and possibly chrysanthemums for sale. The list may grow a bit as the date nears.
A large tent is too expensive to rent so we are putting out a call for E-Z Ups (or similar) cano-pies to be used on Oct. 3. We will have individual pop-ups spread out over the lawn for social distancing. Depending on the size, there will be one or two tables placed underneath with do-nated items for sale. Pop-ups can be set up on Friday, Oct. 2, by the owners ( so no casualties happen). Help will be available if needed. If inclement weather occurs, the sale will be Sunday, Oct.4, from 12:00- 4:30. Canopies can be taken down as soon as the sale is over.
Donated goods can be left at the church on the following days:
Thurs. Sept. 3 9:30 - 12:00
Tues. Sept. 8 1:00 - 4:00
Wed. Sept. 9 9:30 - 12:00
Mon. Sept. 14 9:30 - 12:00
Thurs. Sept. 17 9:30 12:00
Tues. Sept. 22 5:30 -8:00
Thurs. Sept. 24 9:30 - 12:00
Mon. Sept. 28 9:30 - 12:00
Wed. Sept. 30 1:00- 4:00 (last day for donations)
I can meet at an appointed time if none of the above is convenient.
I will need lots of help for this to be a success. Helpers include cashiers, set-up help on Friday, pricers in the weeks before the sale, and general helpers the day of the sale. Please consider helping out. I appreciate any help you can give me. Please call at your earliest convenience- 860-663-2178. Please leave a message if I am not home.
Thank you,
Jo Ann Bennett

The Pastoral Search Committee
The Search Committee is gearing up for Candidating Sunday on September 20,2020. The service will be held outdoors unless inclement weather forces us indoors. All protocols for safety will be adhered to. Masks are required. Zoom will also be available. By now you should have received a letter introducing our candidate for approval. We are excited and anxious for you to meet him. -The Pastoral Search Committee
The Treasurer As we reach seven months into 2020, we have an operating budget surplus of almost $12,000. This was due to pledges being essentially on budget, and almost $13,000 received in Payroll Protection Plan (PPP) proceeds under the Federal Cares Act. This money was used to pay sal-aries and utilities. The surplus does not include a “carryover” surplus from 2019 of $21,000. The Trustees continues to allow rental relief as requested by some of our non-profit tenants, and we anticipate rental income to be below budget for the remainder of 2020. In conclusion. we are hopeful that we will be on budget for the full year 2020 as the PPP pro-ceeds will offset anticipated shortfalls in rental income and fundraisers.
The Trustees Through July and August, our congregation was able to meet for services in-person in the
outdoor chapel area and via zoom. So far, only one service (July 16, 2020) was conducted solely by remote access due to inclement weather. We are grateful to Pastor Tyler Jarvis for leading our ser-vices during July and August. We are also grateful to Vanessa Pentz and Richard Borek for provid-ing musical accompaniment. As part of our expanding use of technology, you may find video re-cordings of our past services on the church website.
We plan to continue to meet outdoors so long as the weather allows. We are working on
plans to move our services indoors for the fall and winter. We will share those plans with the con-gregation as soon as possible. Our continuing ability to hold services indoors will also be contingent upon the overall health status of our state and community. Even when we move back to the sanctu-ary, we will continue to offer zoom for those who prefer to attend remotely.
Rob Rimmer, on behalf of the Trustees

Preservation 2020 is keeping its name, and while fundraising continues and events are on hold, it is now moving into the construction phase.
Since forming in early 2019, Preservation 2020 has raised a third of its $404,000 fund-raising goal. In June, a grant application was submitted to the Connecticut’s State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and the church was awarded $47,700 to begin its first phase of work.
A contract has been signed and is awaiting SHPO’s signature. Next is solicitation of bids followed by SHPO approval of the bids and choice of contractor. This involves a pre-bid conference and time for bid preparation. Once received and approved, the Preservation 2020 team will award a contract to the successful bidder and begin construction.
According to SHPO’s rules, the church is required to pay the contractors the initial payment and will then be reimbursed by SHPO at the completion of the work. On Sunday, August 2, the congre-gation voted unanimously to approve to compliance with SHPO’s stipulations for the grant.
Phase #1 of the restoration will include replacing/restoring all of the rotten framing , roofing, and balustrades between the bell and the weather vane.
Upon completion of the Phase #1 Belfry restoration work, the team will immediately apply for a second grant from SHPO for Phase #2 which includes the entire balance of the exterior restoration of the sanctuary below the belfry.
If granted, the same process will be followed and upon its completion, we will submit an applica-tion for a third grant for Phase #3, the interior dome restoration, although future grants are not guaranteed.
To get a drone’s-eye view of the steeple and belfry (and all the beautiful Killingworth scenery sur-rounding it), visit the Preservation 2020 page on Facebook or the church YouTube Channel.
For more information, please contact Charlie Smith (860-663-1583). To contribute to Preserva-tion 2020, please send donations to the Congregational Church in Killingworth, 273 Route 81, Kill-ingworth, CT.
As always, thank you for your interest and your support.

Karen Gagliardi tirelessly works gathering supplies for the New Haven Midnight Run on the third Monday of each month. Seasonal clothing is needed (no kids please). Large and x-large sizes are usually in highest demand. Blankets, sleeping bags, tote bags, backpacks, socks, seasonal clothes, rain gear, regular sized toiletries are always much appreciated.
Eddy Shelter Dinners: September 8 & 22
Missions continue to provide meals to the Eddy Shelter on the second and fourth Tues-day of each month. Desserts, salads, and breads are always gratefully accepted to accompany these meals. Call Paulie Lally at 860-663-2315 to offer donations and set up pick up info. The Shelter's 40 beds are full during this crisis.
