Greetings Everyone!

Well, another academic year has come to a close and we just watched the class of 2012 walk across the stage at the Meyerhoff to accept their well-earned diplomas from Dean Mike Klag. Should you feel very nostalgic, please visit a clip from this year’s graduation: http://www.jhsph.edu/publichealthnews/articles/2012/graduation2012.html.  May 4th & 5th:  The Highlight of the MHA Academic Year 4th Annual Case Competition—May 4th

The Class of 2013 continued the tradition of presenting professionally and successfully to a team of hospital ex-ecutives who served as case competition judges. The case this year required teams to analyze the challenges and make recommendations for the development of an ACO for a large healthcare system. The six teams presented to a panel of judges that included Lyle Sheldon, CEO of Upper Chesapeake Health System; Charlie Reuland (Class of 1991) , Execu-tive VP and COO of Bayview Medical Center; Dr. John Chessare, President and CEO of Greater Baltimore Medical Center and Herb Buchanan, COO of University of Maryland Medical Center. The judges for the final round of the competition were Warren Green, President and CEO of LifeBridge Health; Karen Olscamp, President and CEO of Balti-more Washington Medical Center, and Tim McManus (Class of 1996), President and CEO of Reston Medical Cen-ter. The first place team, Five Star Healthcare Consulting, is pictured below [left to right], Matt Drohan, Kayla Miller, Yi Wang, and Miriam Guzman. The second place team, Gulf Coast Consulting, was composed of Teresa Falcon, Alyssa Nardi, John Sheppard, and Linda Sobh. Following the competition, Ann-Michele had the honor of presenting a very special gift to Warren Green who will be retiring from LifeBridge next year. Mr. Green has played an important role in the Hopkins MHA program, serving on our program’s Advisory Group, presenting at program seminars, and precepting second year students, the most recent of whom is Lauren Morlier.

Inaugural UPD Induction—May 4th

In between the finals of the case competition and the alumni/preceptor dinner, the JHU Bloomberg School of Public Health conducted its first Upsilon Phi Delta induction ceremony. UPD is the national academic honor society for students in healthcare administration programs that are members of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA). The name is derived from the Greek words: Upsilon (health); Phi (care); and Delta (to lead); accordingly, its purpose is to promote leadership skills, recognize academic achieve-ment, and contribute to the healthcare management profes-sion. Faculty Advisor Ann-Michele Gundlach presented each inductee with their pins and certificates. The MHA program chose Daniel Pink’s Drive as a gift for each of the 22 inductees as it anticipated that UPD members will be well-positioned to motivate and lead our healthcare systems. The Hopkins chapter of UPD will be working closely with the MHA Student Association to identify and promote community service and leadership activities.

Alumni & Preceptors’ Dinner—May 4th

All of the members of the Classes of 2013 and 2012, except for those in California and Texas, were able to join us for this year’s alumni and preceptor dinner in Feinstone Hall. Our guest speaker was Brett Lee, Class of 2002. Brett’s the Senior Vice President of Health System Operations at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and oversees one of the country’s largest chil-dren’s health networks. His presentation, “Beyond Healthcare Reform,” spoke about our chang-ing industry and the leadership skills that will be required to thrive. Not only did Brett provide the audience with healthcare trends that have emerged in response to reform, but he also put an exclamation point to why we do what we do by sharing the poignant story of a little girl named Eva, one of the cancer patients treated at his hospital.

Two of the largest groups in attendance were from KPMG and the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). KPMG was represented by Zach Bechtel, who’ll continue there after graduation, preceptor Mark Higdon and program grads Brett McCone and James Case. Nina Liu, Class of 2013, will begin her field placement at KPMG in June. Jessica Gundel and classmate Sneha Jain, the two administrative residents from UMMC attended with their pre-ceptors, Herb Buchanan, Alison Brown and Dana Farrakhan. Also in attendance was Keli Chongasing-Gabriel who completed her UMMC residency in 2011.

Class of 2002 Reunion—May 4th

Members of the Class of 2002 have been very active alumni and it was a highlight of this year’s dinner to have so many return to Baltimore for their 10th reunion. They were quite taken by the many physical changes to the Wolfe Street Building. The East Wing Auditorium, where they took Epidemiology in the fall of 2000, is now Sheldon Hall. Feinstone Hall didn’t even exist when they were students, nor did the 9th floor gym or the 4th floor reading rooms!

In attendance, and included in the picture, were Arvin Mejia, currently of Continuing Health Partners in NYC; Inga Adams-Pizarro, Booz Allen Hamilton, Rockville, MD; Brett Lee; Jessica Panish, Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals in NJ; Anshu Choudhri, BCBS Association in Chicago; and Roshy Didehban, Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, AZ. The reunion continued through Saturday with brunch at the Baltimore Inner Harbor. Thanks to all of the members of the Class of 2002. Those who weren’t in attendance were there both in spirit and on the big screen, which flashed their photos from Canada, Taiwan, Thailand and Boston!

MHA Capstone Presentations—May 5th

On May 5th, the MHA Program launched its inaugural Cap-stone Symposium. The members of the Class of 2012 recovered from the festivities of the Alumni/Preceptor Dinner to make it back to cam-pus by 9:00 AM the next morning to present their capstones to class-mates and program directors. The array of topics was impressive and ranged from The Changing Payment Landscape for Health Care Pro-viders, Payers and Patients to Transitions in Care: Models to Improve the Continuum of Care to The Role of the Health Coach in the Ac-countable Care Era to name a few. Each student had ten minutes to present their work which was followed by a Q&A from their class-mates. It was a stimulating session for all. Although business attire

was not required, the research and analysis that went into students’ capstones were extremely professional. Pictured above is Omar Hajji; who presented on Emerging and Future Applications of Analytics and Data Aggregators in the Healthcare Industry.

May 4th & 5th:  The Highlight of the MHA Academic Year...continued

Johns Hopkins Hospital New Clinical Buildings  As mentioned in Bill’s letter, the big news this spring was the opening of the Sheikh Zayed Tower and the Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children’s Center. To take a virtual tour, please visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frUpcT-GzwA. As you would imagine, the planning for these new facilities took many years; however, the MHA Classes of 2012 and 2013 had the opportunity to make this process part of their educational experience. Nancy Cushman, Class of 2012, who completed her administrative residency within Operations Integration at Hopkins, helped to engage members of the Class of 2013 in various simulation exercises that helped prepare for the

April 29-30 patient move. Each student in the Class of 2013 participated in some way that helped the patient move executive group identify and correct flaws. Most served as mock patients, others as time keepers, and observers. Steve McMillen, pictured to the left, had the opportunity to play a pediatric patient who was trans-ported to surgery. During another rehearsal, Steve played a husband who col-lapsed as his wife was receiving dialysis; he was quickly transported to the new ER. As a result of all the planning since 2010 and the extensive dress rehearsals in February and March of this year, the patient move was a huge success and the Class of 2013 got to meet with Nancy Cushman the following week to hear about the experience from her perspective as someone who worked at the command center during the two day period.

University of Alabama‐Birmingham Case Competition  Ann-Michele Gundlach had the pleasure of escorting this year’s case competition team to the University of Alabama at Birmingham in February. You may recognize this year’s participants, Nancy Cushman, Sneha Jain and Fadi Rammo, as “Cyan Consulting”, the team that won our MHA case competi-tion in 2011. The focus of the 2012 UAB Case Competition was the development of a trauma services strategic plan for the University of Pittsburg Medical Center in order to address the competitive challenge posed by another health care system intending to expand into UPMC’s trauma service’s market. This year the Hopkins team received Honorable Men-tion for its fine performance in this case competition.

Julie Silver, a 1st year student in our MHA program, presented at the Healthcare Systems Process Improvement Conference this past February in Las Vegas. The Society for Health Systems holds this event each year to provide a forum to share best practices in quality, productivity, and efficiency in the healthcare field. Julie presented with a for-mer colleague on “A Rational Decision Making Framework: Medication Distribution System,” a project they completed during her time at BJC Healthcare in St. Louis. This framework standardizes the process for deciding which type of distribution system to im-plement in a hospital using computer simulation modeling, a human factors assessment, and the Kepner Tregoe rational decision making model. In addition, the presentation in-cluded an analysis focused on nursing interruptions during the medication administration process. Congratulations, Julie!
