Shalom friends,A key part of our mission is to provide our members and neighbors with programs and activities that are useful, energizing, interesting and relevant. We build these programs understanding that the key to success is to create diverse offerings across Northern Virginia so that we fit your needs. I hope you find the choices offered inside this edition of Centertainment to be interesting and engaging.

Since the start of our new fiscal year on June 1, your new Board and Executive Director have started a critical initiative to create a plan for our agency’s future. Why is this necessary? We have reached a point where our building is showing its age. In addition, space in the building is at a premium, and that limits our ability to serve the community adequately. One thing is clear – we cannot ignore the building’s needs much longer, therefore we must evaluate our options.

We started the planning process by asking a few questions:

Why do we have a JCC? •How does it fit our needs? •How should it fit our needs in the •future?

The answers to these questions are critical – as they will help guide our decisions. I have my own opinions, but the more important answers should not come from me. Instead, they must come from you –

our members, and friends who are not yet part of the JCCNV family. The answers will vary depending on how you interact with the JCC and where you live. This is a wonderfully diverse community. Most of us are really busy. Responses by the community must be examined, as they impact our ability to serve the Northern Virginia Jewish community.

We will work to leverage our strong relationships with Federation, JCC Association, and partner agencies to start the challenging process of mapping out JCCNV 2.0. When we answer these questions, we will be able to draw a strong blueprint for our JCC’s future. In the meantime, we need to keep our eyes firmly on the road – working with the tools we have and making sure we manage them prudently. That means:

Keeping this building an attractive and •safe place in which to work and to visit. Making sure we have top notch •programs here, and across Northern VA. Providing valuable services to those •in our community who need an extra shoulder upon which to lean. Providing educational opportunities •about our wonderful Jewish history, language and culture. Keeping this a wonderful Jewish home •that’s open to all.Being a place for us to gather, in good •times – and when we need the comfort of each other.

I thank you for your support, and invite your opinions and thoughts as we map out our future.

Cheers!

Allon ShiffJCCNV President

The JCCNV– Your Complete Mind, Body and Spirit Center. The JCCNV is the premier place in Northern Virginia to come and experience wellness programs that fully engage the whole you. Looking at our wellness model from a broad perspective, it goes beyond health and fitness to also include the roles of intellectual, spiritual, financial, environmental, medical, social action, emotional, vocational and mental health to achieve a balanced state of optimal wellness.

As you look through this issue of Centertainment, visit our new website and as you come to the Center to enjoy classes, programs and social gatherings, you’ll see that woven into the fabric of each department’s activities are threads of wellness programming to ensure optimal wellness for our mishpacha and chaverim.

At the JCCNV, we help you find your center!

Welcome Jessica TischlerOur new Special Needs Coordinator, Jessica Tischler will join the JCCNV family this fall. Jessica has a Masters of Education in Therapeutic Recreation from Temple University in Philadelphia and is currently running a day camp in Philadelphia. Growing up at the JCC in Virginia Beach, Jessica is familiar with Center life and is very excited to begin her journey here.

JCCNV Early Childhood Programs Are Growing! Not only are the “little ones” quickly growing in our Early Childhood Learning Center (ECLC)—the program itself has become so popular, it continues to draw families from all across Northern Virginia. To meet the demand, another classroom for 3 and 4 year olds was added and we continue to maintain a waitlist for the Infant/Toddler program. At press time, there were only three spaces available in the ECLC program! Congratulations to Family Services director Amy Brinko; Early Childhood Services director Amy Vermillion and to director of the Early Childhood Learning Center Amit Hickman on the popularity of the program that offers a nurturing, educational environment guided by Jewish values!

New Website to Launch! The JCCNV plans to launch a brand new website this fall! The new site will be visually appealing, user-friendly and will include online registration, a calendar of upcoming programs, links to our Facebook, Twitter and YouTube pages. The site will be very robust and serve as a true reflection of the vibrancy of our Center.

In addition to the Center’s new website, the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. area Jewish community launched a brand new portal for everything Jewish in NoVa, Maryland and D.C. The site serves as an in-depth resource to Jewish life on both sides of the river. To access JConnect, visit www.jconnect.org.

Calling All Football Fans! The JCCA Fantasy Football Challenge is coming to our Center this fall. Pick your dream team and play against other dream teams from other JCCs at www.discoverjcc.com/jccffc. E-mail Matt Alvin at [email protected] or Paula Cole at [email protected]. Entry fees: $50 per person

Philanthropy: Introducing the Chai Society of the JCCNV

The JCCNV has established a new leadership society to recognize those donors who contribute $1,800 or more per year in unrestricted funds. This special, visionary group of leaders understands the importance of the JCCNV to our Jewish community, and the fact that none of our extraordinary programs would be possible without a financially sound operation. By joining the Chai Society, members are demonstrating their understanding that the life of the JCCNV depends on our ability to financially support our general operations in addition to programmatic support. To augment their general operating support, many members of the Chai Society choose to contribute supplementary dollars to the programs about which they are most passionate. At a total of $3,000 and above, they also become members of our premier giving program, the Trustee Circle.

If you are interested in joining the Chai Society or Trustee Circle, or would like more information, please contact Jeff Dannick, JCCNV Executive Director, at (703) 537-3023 or [email protected].

Why is volunteering for the JCCNV important to you?I have been a part of the JCCNV since its founding, and have served there in many different capacities, but being a volunteer has always been at the top of the list, as it is a way to truly be of service where needed. My husband and I were founding members, I was a Board Member for several years, I helped structure the first Mom’s Day Out program, have been on several committees there (the Film Festival Committee being the one in which I was most involved), aided the ArtsFest summer program a few years back, and even served on the staff here and there. I find that working at the JCCNV as a volunteer, whatever the program might be, short term or long term, increases my sense of being a part of the larger Jewish community, helps me make new friends, and satisfies my need to see the programs of the Center grow and flourish.

What is your favorite aspect of the JCCNV and why?For me, it is always about “the people” and the sense of Jewish community. The Center was begun as a way for both affiliated and non-affiliated Jews in Northern Virginia to be part of a larger and integrated community as a whole, and that focus has remained an important piece of its mission statement. An additional aspect, connected to this, is the way that the JCCNV has become a true center for the non-Jewish community as well, which speaks well for its welcoming environment—that other groups feel very comfortable using the facilities and really feel a part of the group, some even to the extent that they have become significant contributors to the center’s funds.

JCCNV Volunteer Spotlight: Enid Liess

For me, it is always about ‘the people’ and the sense of Jewish community.

Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia

Your Complete Mind, Body and Spirit Center.

Thanks in great part to our members, foundations, corporate sponsors and friends, the Center continues fulfilling its commitment to this community to provide a comfortable atmosphere rich in Jewish family traditions. We encourage you to think about the Center when making your charitable-giving plans.

Giving to the Center helps bring Jewish values to life.

Mitzvah Cards/Retail ScripThe JCCNV receives a percentage of every dollar that you spend at Giant, Safeway and Shoppers Food Warehouse along with many other retail stores. Starting in September, when you enroll in the monthly grocery scrip program, we will order your card (minimum $100) at the store of your choice and send it to you with an invoice.

By enrolling in the monthly program, you can add cards from hundreds of participating stores to your order at any time on a month-to-month basis. Orders are placed on the 15th of each month and arrive within four business days. Click on shopwithscrip.com and then go to the shop to see a full listing of stores.

Contact Carla Rosenfeld at (703) 537-3060 or [email protected] or submit the order form, available online at www.jccnv.org or in the JCCNV lobby.

Give CashCash gifts allow the Center to use funds where they are most urgently needed. You may also designate your gift for a specific purpose, or you may make it in honor or memory of a person or an occasion through the tribute program. A special card will be sent to recognize your tribute gift.

Become a Member of the Trustee Circle or Chai SocietyDues and program fees cover less than 80% of the JCCNV’s annual operating expenses. The Center depends on the generous philanthropy of Trustee Circle members to ensure our financial sustainability. Donating 69% of the funds raised throughout the year, Trustee Circle members are the cornerstone of the Center’s ability to build a strong community based on Jewish values. Contact Jeff Dannick, at [email protected] •(703)537-3023.

Make Amazon.com Purchases Through www.jccnv.orgThe Center is part of the Amazon Associates Program. By clicking the link on the JCCNV website and continuing with your search and purchase on amazon.com, the Center will receive up to 15% rebate from your purchase.

Transfer Appreciated AssetsStocks or other investments that have been held for more than one year and have grown in value can provide a substantial gift to the Center at a low net cost to you. The full value of your appreciated asset is tax-deductible and you can avoid paying tax on the gains.

Give Insurance/IRAs/Retirement FundsIf you no longer need a life insurance policy, IRA or other retirement fund, consider giving it to the Center. Even if you are still paying premiums on an insurance policy, it can be given to the Center; you may take an income-tax deduction when the Center is named owner and beneficiary. Alternately, you may choose to set up a new life insurance policy naming the JCC of Northern Virginia as beneficiary, ensuring support for the Center in the future.

Establish an Endowment FundBy establishing an endowment fund at the JCCNV, you will be assured that the programs and services you most care about will endure. You may name the endowment fund and designate which area of the Center will benefit. Once the endowment fund reaches a minimum of $10,000, the fund will be formally established.

Make a BequestCreate a legacy for your community by naming the JCCNV as a beneficiary in your will.

Donate a Used CarDonate now and help the JCCNV accomplish its mission of providing social, educational, fitness and wellness programs guided by Jewish values. Your donation is tax-deductible. Free towing wherever the car is—as is. You can download the car donation form on our website or request one from our reception desk at the JCCNV.

Matching-Gift ProgramIf your employer offers a matching-gift program, take advantage of it! In many cases, your cash contribution becomes twice as valuable. It’s usually quick and easy; just complete your company’s form and your gift to the Center will be matched.(Sample companies that match are Exxon-Mobil and IBM.)

Your Complete Mind, Body and Spirit Center.

Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia

A Hasidic tale recalls a person who went for a walk in the forest and got lost. The hiker wandered around for hours attempting to find his way back to town, trying one path after another, but none of them led out. Then, abruptly, he came across another hiker walking through the forest. He cried out, “Thank God for another human being….can you help show me the way back to town?” The other hiker replied, “No, I am lost too, but we can help each other in this way: we can tell each other which paths we have already tried and have been disappointed in; that will help us find the one that leads out”*

At Federation, we work each day with community leaders to find the right path and create paths where previously there had been none. We, as a community, must be creative and resourceful as we support our community members in need and we must work collaboratively to ensure a vibrant future for the Northern Virginia Jewish community.

JLink is a project of Federation in partnership with The Jewish Social Service Agency (JSSA). JLink helps individuals of all ages in our community who are unemployed or underemployed due to the ongoing economic downturn. JLink is designed as a gateway to community employment services, career coaching and support for career-related life issues such as depression/anxiety resulting from not having a job or being underemployed. Additionally, JLink also provides financial assistance (based on need) and referrals to other community resources.

JLink clients have had overwhelmingly positive experiences with the program, one client commented: “I just wanted to thank you for the help you gave me to get the food cards and the Metro card. I have had more work... and used my card to get back and forth. I put in applications everywhere and went to the Job Search Boot Camp as you suggested at the JCCNV. Right now I am waiting for a call from an employer who was very interested in the things I put on my application. He wants me to interview with him this week. Thank youfor helping me again. It may be all I need to get back on my feet again!”To make it convenient for members of our community to use JLink, we offer services at three locations throughout Northern Virginia, JSSA’s Fairfax office, Beth El Hebrew Congregation and the Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia. 703-896-7917 [email protected] The JLink program is offered on an ongoing basis, appointments are scheduled in advance.

Together with our leaders, volunteers and professionals we continue our work to keep Jewish life, Federation and our partner agencies meaningful, relevant, inclusive and accessible. For information on how to get involved please call 703-286-1039 or email [email protected]. Federation’s Northern Virginia Regional Office is located inside the lobby of the JCCNV, please stop in anytime.

JCCNV Membership Has Its Benefits! Discounted Program & Class RatesThroughout Centertainment you’ll notice that JCCNV members are referred to as Mishpacha (family) and nonmembers are warmly referred to as Chaverim (friends). As a benefit of membership, the JCCNV offers Mishpacha discounts on classes and programs which you’ll see noted throughout the program guide by an M following the cost. Our Chaverim (friends) rates are followed by a C. Of course, in order for membership rates to apply, membership must remain current throughout the duration of the class/program.

FREE-4-Mishpacha (Members) Fitness ClassesMany of the Center’s popular group exercise classes are free of charge including: Abs and Stretch, Cardio-Kickboxing, Cardio-Zumba, Core Conditioning, Flexible You, Kickboxing, Sculpt & Shape, Senior Strength Training, Strength & Power Training, Water Aerobics, and Zumba Gold and Stretch.

Photo-ID Membership CardsFor over a year, the JCCNV has been implementing a new method of access to the Center—a state-of-the-art photo ID scan system. This requires that new membership cards be issued to all Mishpacha (members). Throughout the process, you are still able to enjoy the facilities and easily access your areas of interest throughout the building. A significant benefit of the ID system is that it will let us know how the Center is being used so we can periodically assess our facilities and programs.

All Mishpacha (members), and any other individuals over the age of 11 who are included in your membership, must have the new photo ID. If you haven’t already done so, be sure to stop in and have your picture taken so a new ID can be produced.

Please note that there is a $20 replacement fee should your card get damaged or lost.

Please check www.jccnv.org or contact the Membership Department with any questions.

JCCNV volunteers participate in a number of social action projects, including making casseroles for the homeless, serving meals at nearby shelters, packing food boxes at an emergency food warehouse, visiting Jewish residents in retirement homes and donating food for Thanksgiving baskets.

Dan Burke is a serious woodworker who is inspired by the beauty and variety of woods. To our delight, he crafts boxes for jewelry or keepsakes. His concepts underline the clean designs of his work with the goal of highlighting the wood’s grain to bring out their natural beauty, in basic forms of squares, rectangles with gentle curves. The end results are finely made pieces that you want to touch and use.

Alice Mostoff’s “color-filled images are vigorous, energetic and gestural landscapes and abstractions. These works convey a sense of rhythm and spontaneity.” Alice has been developing her fine art and evolving her drawing and painting style continuously and finds herself facing new horizons with each successive body of work she produces. Regarding her art, Ruth Siegel explains that, “My work is an interplay between myself and my material. The slow and multi-stage process of kilnforming allows me that kind of relationship. While in the kiln, glass is too hot to handle, but each time it comes out of the kiln there is another opportunity for intimate dialogue. The personality of the piece continues to develop as long as this process continues.“ Ruth’s use of space in and around her pieces becomes an important element. A vessel as a form naturally draws space into itself, but she expands this idea by cutting into the edges, reducing the barrier to the surrounding area. “Cut edges themselves also reach out and integrate with the space in which the object lives, compounding that receptivity.” Life is a source of visual inspiration for her dramatic and creative objects in glass.

M+2S=More than Just GlassDecember 20–February 14, 2012

Kari Minnick’s work is “a study in contrasts: order and chaos, thick and thin, questioning and acceptance. Using rich surfaces and layers of glass, I contrast fleshy realism with abstraction…immediacy and restraint, delicacy and directness, confusion and clarity. I try to balance these contrasts personally and artistically.” Kari brings tremendous depth to her glass works with her use of traditional drawing and painting skills and her visual clues to the story of her art. Through the medium of glass she holds true to her “core aesthetic concerns of expressive use of line, and the transmission of light” resulting in delicate and powerful works in glass.

Artist Laurie Siegel states, “When I arrange scraps of glass on my art table I am like a child watching in awe as their paint spreads over the paper!” working primarily in fused glass, also referred to as “warm glass,” Laurie brings to her work a broad background in ceramics, calligraphy, drawing, painting, silkscreening and jewelry design. After traveling in Asia her creative work has been influenced by Chinese and Japanese aesthetic, scroll painting, calligraphy and ikebana flower arranging. “Japanese art makes little distinction between fine art and decorative art.” The result is each piece as a unique work of art.

An Ethical Start®

The JCCNV Early Childhood Learning Center is proud to be An Ethical Start® school. This curriculum for early childhood is based on Pirkei Avot: Ethics of the Fathers. This classic text has been studied for almost two thousand years because it contains practical advice for daily living. Using a comprehensive approach, An Ethical Start® helps teachers and parents support children’s emotional and social development and raise children with the timeless values of Jewish tradition. And it’s all a lot of fun, because An Ethical Start® makes the ethical dimensions of Judaism accessible with Peer K. Explorer® and his study partner Dafna®—the irresistible, adventurous characters who appear in the program’s music, books and more.

provide experiences to foster social skills and emotional maturity and to strengthen cognitive and physical growth. Play is a child’s work. Play provides the opportunity for children to explore their world, find out how to get along with others, strengthen their muscles, try new activities, build self-confidence and enhance self-esteem. Play is how the young child develops the necessary skills and social competencies that will be needed as he/she grows and matures.

The primary goal of our Infant/Toddler Program is to provide each child with the best of care in a clean and nurturing environment. Our staff works to encourage the children in every stage of his or her social and emotional growth, as well as support and strengthen language and cognitive development. The daily routine is set up to provide stimulating experiences for children to learn and explore their environment through their own curiosity.

Our teaching philosophy follows a Reggio-Emilia inspired philosophy that is based on the following ideas:

Children have a say over the direction of •their learningChildren are able to learn through •experiences of touching, moving, listening, seeing and hearingChildren have a relationship with other •children and material items to exploreChildren have endless ways and •opportunities to express themselvesOur philosophy involves an emergent •curriculum that builds on the interests of the children. Topics of study are chosen through discussion/observations of children, community or family events, interests of the children, and teacher-directed provocations. The curriculum provides hands-on learning experiences, areas for children to experiment with the natural world, and real life problem-solving with opportunities for creative thinking and exploration.

Mind and Body ConnectionPaula Cole, SFA Director

The mind and body connection plays an important role in improving the quality of life. Popular practices such as yoga – flexibility, strength and muscle tone improve quickly as the mind and body work together in harmony and unison. More and more, people are finding it difficult to manage the stress that comes along with today’s hectic lifestyle. Finding the right balance between family, work and exercise has never been more challenging. Aside from weight management, regular exercise increases longevity, quality of life, energy, strength, balance and coordination, as well as serves as a pain reliever and antidepressant.

Work stress has been linked to serious health problems, including heart attacks. In response to stress, the hormone Cortisol is released in greater amounts which, in return stimulates an increased appetite for high-fat, high-sugar food and increasing fat storage in the abdomen.

ACE – The American Council of Exercise FitFacts suggests trying the following to reduce workplace stress.

Work MindfullyMindfulness is a way of zeroing in on the here and now instead of ruminating over the past, mulling over the future, or doing several things at once. Give your full attention to the task at hand, whether it’s a call, a meeting, or a project. Scrolling through your messages while on a phone call may feel productive – but multitasking will only add to your stress and drain your energy.

Be NiceGet to know your co-workers by asking about their weekends, inviting their opinions, and eating lunch together. Collegial co-worker relationships make the workplace more pleasant for everyone. Offer genuine compliments. Smile frequently.

Communicate WellMiscommunication is the root of many workplace conflicts. Clarify details and expectations for every job task. Check for understanding if you are the one dishing out assignments. Annoying co-workers are best dealt with immediately and directly – or the behavior may get worse.

Shake It OffInstead of stewing about a project that was dumped on you, view it as an opportunity to showcase your skills, talent, and teamwork

– or speak with your supervisor. Instead of letting one grumpy customer get you down, focus on the 50 grateful customers you helped today! Take a few full, deep breaths to clear your mind and proceed down a more positive path.

Practice Smart Self-CareRegular exercise and good nutrition, along with time for fun and relaxation, boosts your ability to cope with stress. Consider taking a walk at break time or meeting a friend for lunch. Learn relaxation breathing and stretching exercises to do at your desk. Choose high energy, nutritious foods for meals and snacks and cultivate a sense of humor by looking for laughable moments in everyday life at work.

Get HelpIf your best efforts don’t reduce your stress and talking with your manager doesn’t help, seek advice from your human resources department or employee relationship representative. Some employers offer assistance programs, don’t hesitate to use it.

Make A PlanLife is too short to spend it in a toxic workplace and living with chronic stress isn’t a long term solution. No job is stress-free, but if your current job isn’t a good match for your interest, talents and goals, create a plan to move on. Paint a realistic picture of your dream job by talking with others in your desired line of work before you make the leap.

At the JCCNV, we build community by providing people of all ages and backgrounds with a warm, caring environment that offers social, educational, health and lifestyle programs guided by Jewish values. Let the staff of the Sports, Fitness and Aquatics Department help you learn fitness and lifestyle techniques that can last a lifetime. Stop by, or make an appointment with one of our trainers to learn more about finding the right exercise niche to get you started.

Class Descriptions

Assisted DanceThis program allows high-functioning special needs dance students to be main-streamed into our dance classes with the help of a shadow. Parents are required to pay for the shadow as needed. Contact Alicia Ron-quillo or the JCCNV special needs coordina-tor, with questions regarding this program.

Adult DanceClasses are a relaxed and easy-going way to learn something new and get in shape. No strict dress code. Try something new and invite your friends. Dance is a great way to have fun and stay in shape.

BalletBallet is a remarkably expressive, nonverbal art form that creates a mood or tells a story through apparently effortless movement. The study of ballet, however, is rigorous and is designed to improve body carriage and co-ordination. Students should wear leotards to allow the instructor to properly observe body alignment and form, as well as ballet slippers. Ballet 4, 5 and 6 students are required to wear solid-colored leotards, tights and pink ballet slippers.

ChoreographyA class designed to teach the tools neces-sary for creating your own dance pieces. The students in this class work together, with the instructor, to create a dance for the end-of-year Dance Academy dance recital. It is rec-ommended that dance company members, as well as those interested in auditioning, participate in this class.

Creative DanceThis class is a movement class! Students will explore movement through the use of music, props, stories and more. They will learn ba-sic dance vocabulary as well as body control and self awareness. This class will perform a dance in our annual dance recital.

Dance ExplorersThis class was designed as an introduction to dance for preschool dance students. The class allows your little explorer to try every-thing from ballet to hip hop and acrobatics all in one class. The dancers will work to-gether with their instructor to create a dance which will be presented at our annual recital.

Hip-HopA high-energy dance form done to the music of rap, R&B and pop. Study of this form develops the student’s sense of creative movement, rhythm, strength and coordina-tion. Comfortable clothes and dance sneak-ers should be worn to class. (Sneakers worn outdoors will not be allowed in the dance studio.)

Israeli DanceThese are both traditional folk dances and modern creations performed to Israeli music. Be the only one at the next Bah/Bat Mitzvah to really know how to dance!

JazzA newer dance genre than ballet and tap, jazz inspires dynamic movement and precision. Jazz shoes and leotards should be worn to allow the instructor to properly observe body alignment and form.

JCCNV Senior andJunior Dance CompanyA select group of dancers who perform throughout our community at various events and festivals. The premier dancers learn dances in many different styles and are ex-

pected to be very committed to the company. Dancers must be asked to participate in this group; an audition will be held on August 28th. Contact Alicia Ronquillo at (703) 537-3037 or at [email protected].

Modern DanceAn expressive, free form of dance that utilizes elements of ballet, jazz, acrobatics and many other dance styles. A leotard with jazz pants or shorts should be worn. This form of dance is performed barefooted.

NEW! Parent Child DanceOpen to all dancers ages 6 and up. Each month we will explore a different style of dance from tap to ballet. You will get to take class from each of our instructors, and as a class create a performance piece for our an-nual dance recital. Don’t just be a spectator step up and dance!

Pre-Pointe By referral onlyTo dance en pointe is the ambition of every young ballet student. First, a standard of strength and technique must be achieved to be able to reach that goal safely and with-out detrimental effect to a growing body. Students practice barre and center floor exer-cises in ballet slippers until the teacher feels they are ready to begin en pointe. Students in this class must also be in Ballet 5 or higher. Solid-colored leotards and pink tights should be worn to class.

PointeBy referral onlyStudents are referred to pointe class when the teacher has determined that their bodies are strong enough and they have developed the proper discipline and work ethic. Students in this class must also be enrolled in Ballet 6 or higher. Solid-colored leotards and pink tights should be worn to class. Students will need pointe shoes and regular ballet slippers for this class.

TapTap is a rhythmic and percussive dance form done in special shoes that augment the dance movement with a variety of sounds. Tap develops the student’s timing and rhythm and can enhance the study of other dance forms. Tap shoes and leotards must be worn to allow the instructor to properly observe body alignment and form.

Technique and FlexibilityAn advanced-level class offered as a way to further develop advanced-level dance technique and flexibility. Although this is a ballet-focused class, it contains elements of fitness, modern dance and jazz to encour-age the development of technique and to help build strength and vocabulary. The first thirty minutes of each class will be fo-cused on core development. This class does not have a recital dance so performance fees do not apply.

NEW! Theatre DanceThis is a beginning level dance class that helps prepare dancers for the stage. They will learn basic Jazz dance technique with a focus on musical theatre. Watch out Broad-way, here we come!

Toddler Tales and Tu Tus TooAllows younger children to develop their imaginations and body awareness through interactive storytelling, dress up, basic ballet exploration and creative expression. Students should wear comfortable clothing or ballet attire.

TumblingTumbling introduces students to basic acrobatic skills (forward rolls and bridges) while developing strength and flexibility. As students progress, they work toward learn-ing more difficult tricks like back walkovers and handsprings. Leotards with footless tights (or no tights) must be worn.

ScholarshipsThe cost of a dance education in our area is significant; however we believe that everyone should be able to have dance in their lives. Each year we fundraise, collect donations, and set aside funds in order to assist a few de-serving families with the expenses associated with our program. New for this year we will be looking for families to sponsor our new scholarship program. The annual cost for a student to participate in 1hr of dance a week is about $1,000. Help us to provide positive arts experiences in our area by sponsoring a scholarship (if you commit to funding one of our scholarships for a minimum of 5 years we will name the scholarship after you, your family or your business). Help support the Art of dance as well as our community here at the JCC of Northern Virginia.

John considers himself fortunate to have been able to come to Amerike, where he has had a successful career. After a 45 minute presentation there will be time for Q & A and discussion. Saving Monticello: The Levy Family’s Epic Quest to Rescue the House That Jefferson BuiltThursday, September 8, noon–2:30pmNoon: Lunch (bring dairy or parve)12:30pm: Program Presented by Marc Leepson, noted author of many historical books and numerous news-paper/magazine articles. In 1834 Monticello was purchased by U.S. Navy Lieutenant Uriah Phillips Levy, a wealthy admirer of Jefferson who poured money into its repair. “Thus began this Jew-ish-American family’s nearly 90-year propri-etorship of Monticello. When the patriotic New York socialite Maud Littleton began her campaign to make Monticello a govern-ment-owned shrine in 1911, the battle that ensued in Congress and the newspapers was as emotional as any child custody battle, but more compelling for the dynamic lives and personalities involved. Through extensive research and with fascinating detail, Leepson uncovers the facts surrounding Monticello’s owners and preservation— involved are great wealth, patriotism, anti-Semitism, and social and political influence. Leepson’s absorbing account is an overdue chronicle and homage to the national treasure and its memorable saviors.” (Publisher’s Weekly)After the presentation, there will be a book sale and signing. 10.31.06 - The day a preemie, who t in her palms, stole the heart of a NICU nurse.

“She was the smallest baby I’d ever seen, weighing less than a pound. Right away, however, I knew she was tough. She fought and fought. Today, my ‘miracle patient,’ who I will never forget, is doing quite well. It’s a privilege to work with the team at Inova and witness small miracles every day.”

- Patty, RNC Clinical Educator, NICU, Inova Fairfax Hospital

Even during difficult economic times, when the highest priority is helping people in need and in crisis, The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington continues to ensure that the programs and institutions that strengthen, enrich and celebrate Jewish life remain strong. From trips to Israel and Jewish education to financial assistance for preschools, day schools, and community centers, Federation empowers the next generation of Jews to build a vibrant Jewish future.
