SPORTS COMMITTEE INFO The Sports Committee completed an inspec-tion of the sporting facilities and made recom-mendations to the HOA manager for mainte-nance repairs, all of which have now been completed. A new bike rack was installed between the playground and tennis entrance area. Please place your bikes in the rack vs. leaving them on the walkways. As a reminder, please shut all gates so that they lock when departing the facility, turn off lights when play is completed and save some energy, and please do not move the wooden benches from the bocce ball court to the bas-ketball/pickleball courts. This creates a haz-ard for the players and increases liability for the Isles. Our facilities are in great shape—Enjoy! Next meeting, Thursday, Feb 11, 2016 @ 2:30pm. Town Center

    Grounds Committee News

Valley Crest has promised us that the Trim Crew who are responsible for pruning all shrubs and grasses and the Detail Crew doing the weeding will be at every house in the Isles once a month. They will hire additional help to make this hap-pen. Valley Crest also has an Enhancement and a Replace-

ment Crew. Do not approach a crew member with a specific request. He/She may be on the wrong crew. Individual requests must be submitted via a Landscape Request Form available at the Post

Office. Also realize that if you decide to change the plantings in your landscape (with approval from Architectural Review Commit-tee), you will be responsible for the maintenance of those plantings, regardless of whether you did the planting or con-

tracted with Valley Crest to do the planting. Valley Crest does not have a crew to pick up garbage in your yard. So, if you see a deflated birthday balloon, a water bottle or a plastic bag, etc. in your yard…please put the item in your

garbage container. “Walk softly and hurt the landscape hardly more than the

birds and squirrels.” John Muir We welcome all residents to our meetings so that we may

address your concerns. Next Grounds Committee Meeting…..February 4, 2016 1:00

    GARDEN CORNER

    Updates from ValleyCrest

    February 2016

We all look to forward to February and the cool ‘winter’ temperatures, but with that come the serious risk of severe storms. We will be first on the scene if there is chance of potential damage from storms. We dispatched trucks at 5am on the 16th of January to check for damage, luckily this area was mostly spared but Siesta Key was hit hard and we have

worked all week cleaning up debris. The growth of some plants has greatly slowed but Viburnum Goldmound and Podacarpus continue to over achieve and crews are cutting aggressively. Chris Crawford has got the crews motivated and efficient and will finish pruning the en-

tire property in 4 weeks. The damaged turf has all been replaced and the total came to over 40 pallets, we will continue to check and survey turf

and treat or replace where needed. Work orders have slowed, but it seems as though communi-cation needs to improve as to when work was completed with homeowner. I am instituting leaving a door hanger on each work order completed even if homeowner had com-munication with Miguel or Chris Crawford. I believe this will help with the one offs or missed opportunities to discuss

with homeowners in person. ValleyCrest takes pride in maintaining your lawn and land-

scape and appreciates your loyalty. Sam Passafume

    BIRDERS

Many thanks to Guy & Ann

Spencer for organizing! The Isles Birders participated in the annual bird count at the Isles on Saturday, January 2, 2016. Despite the inclement weather conditions, they counted 33 spe-cies (excluding the wood ducks on the pond), for a total of 425 birds. Guy indicated that the species count for Sarasota had reached 146 by Saturday eve-

ning and it was expected to go higher. Participants in the bird count were Andy Schneider, Barry Gerber, Amy Corso, Cynthia Joseph, Sherry

Bencini, along with Ann & Guy Spencer. (Participants picture on photo page)

    February Theme—Goodness from the Garden.

Our next gathering will take place on Thursday, February

    25. Meet in the clubhouse at 3:40 pm where we will car-

pool over to the Culverhouse Community Garden, just a

short drive away in our Palmer Ranch neighborhood on

McIntosh Road. At 4 pm Catherine Dent, one of the foun-

ders, will give us a tour of this beautiful place. The Cul-

verhouse Community Garden is an organization of com-

mitted local residents who want to work as a gardening

community to grow organic vegetables for their own

health and the health of their families. They invite the

public to take a look around and learn more about them

and their connection to the Sarasota community

    (culverhousegarden.org).

After the tour we will return to the clubhouse for a salad

supper/meeting beginning at 6 pm. Please bring a salad

to share and your own beverage and tableware (cup,

plate, silverware, and napkin). Please sign up in the Activ-

ity Book by Thursday, Feb. 18. There are 20 spots for the

tour; (1st 20 signed will be on the tour). We will schedule

another tour at a later date. We encourage you to come

and join us for the salad supper @ 6pm and short meet-
