Oatmeal Cookie SmoothieThis all-in-one milk-and-cookies smoothie makes a nice change of pace for breakfast or an afternoon snack. For little kids: Let your child help press the buttons on the blender (Be sure to let it run for a full minute before you add the ice so the oatmeal-and-raisin mixture gets as smooth as possible.) and let them measure the ingredients-it’s the perfect time to teach them the difference between wet and dry ingredient measuring cups. Ingredients3/4 cup rolled oats1/4 cup raisins1/4 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice1 cup whole milk, plus more if needed1/2 cup full-fat vanilla yogurt1 tablespoon dark brown sugar

Directions• Add the oats, raisins and pumpkin pie spice to the carafe of a blender and pour in the milk, adding more to cover the oats if needed. Stir completely and set aside until the oats are soft, 15 minutes.• Blend on high speed until pureed and smooth, about 1 minute. Add the yogurt, brown sugar and 1 1/2 cups ice, and blend on high speed until smooth, about 30 seconds. Pour into 2 pint glasses.

All recipes found at www.foodnetwork.com.

Frozen Fruit CupsIngredients4 cups frozen peaches, thawed and chopped into large chunks2 cans mandarin oranges, drained 2 cans crushed pineapple, drained1 can fruit cocktail, drained6 medium firm bananas, chopped into chunks1 small can frozen pineapple-orange juice concentrate, thawed1/3 cup lemon juice

DirectionsCombine the peaches, oranges, pineapple, fruit cocktail, bananas, juice concentrate and lemon juice in a bowl and mix until combined. Place in small disposable plastic cups and cover with plastic wrap or foil. Freeze until firm. Remove from the freezer 45 minutes to 1 hour before serving to thaw.

Tie on your aprons and spend time cooking!

Talk with your child about the numbers on the measuring cups and spoons, show them how to crack an egg, and have them help read the recipe. Cook-ing with kids is educational and fun!

Basic Mug CakesLightly butter 4 small microwave-safe mugs. Whisk 1/2 cup each sugar and buttermilk, 1/4 cup vegetable oil, 1 egg and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla in a large bowl until smooth, about 2 minutes. Whisk in 1/2 cup flour, 1/8 teaspoon baking soda and a pinch of salt until just combined. Pour 1/3 cup batter into each mug. Microwave, one at a time, until puffed and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 2 minutes. (Continue microwaving in 15-second intervals, if needed.) Let cool slightly. Variation: Make Basic Confetti Mug Cakes adding 2 teaspoons rainbow sprinkles to each mug before adding the batter; stir. Top with whipped cream and more sprinkles.

As part of Owosso’s kindergarten registration experience, you and your child can take a photo at registration, commemorating your committment to Owosso Public Schools, your school of choice. This picture will be a memento of their beginning as an Owosso Trojan and will be a great memory to pull out when high school graduation rolls around in 2033. While graduation seems like a longtime from the first day of kindergarten, time flies when you are having fun! The Owosso Public Schools team pledges to provide you the best in academic, athletic, and extra-curricular opportunities and to work with your child to ensure a recipe for success!

The recipe for success begins at home and is supported at school. Dr. William Glasser, an internationally recognized psychiatrist, discovered in his research that we learn:10% of what we read20% of what we hear30% of what we see50% of what we see and hear70% of what we discuss80% of what we experience95% of what we teach to others

Please ask your child to put on his or her Owosso apron and enjoy a cooking experience together. As famous Chef Julia Child said, “No one is born a great cook, one learns by doing.” That is true of everything in life. Take the time to enjoy the simple things like cooking with your child at home and our educational team will provide engaging learning experiences with them at school. Families and schools working together on behalf of your child is a recipe for success!

With great excitement to meet you,

Dr. Andrea Tuttle Superintendent

Sugar and spice and all things nice, that’s what Owosso’s kindergarten is made of. Owosso’s team of educators are caring professionals who nurture all students with the love and

care they need at school while spicing things up to create a dynamic learning environment, rich in

creativity, problem-solving, innovation and laughter. It is a recipe for success!

All great chefs tie on an apron as they step into the kitchen. Your child is receiving an Owosso apron because choosing Owosso Public Schools is the first step in his or her recipe for success in life. You have chosen a school that ranks number one in academic offerings and opportunities beginning in our preschool and carrying through to our kindergarten and ultimately to graduation. Owosso is the District of Opportunities. You have also chosen an International Baccalaureate World School, the only one in the county. IB schools are recognized by colleges and universities all over the world. I know your child is just beginning his or her educational journey, but a key ingredient in the recipe for success is understanding the end goal so you can ensure that you mix all the right ingredients.

FavoritesOwosso Public Schools’ kindergarten students enjoy days filled with exploration, learning, and engagement. Special care is taken to assist students with transitions such as bus loading and unloading, lunch time, and recess to ensure the safety and comfort of our students.

TransportationPrior to the start of the school year, our transportation supervisor will contact parents of kindergartners that will be riding the school bus to answer any questions or concerns. The first day of school, parents will take their students to school. Bus tags detailing the student’s name, school and bus route will be given to parents, students must wear these tags at all times ensuring children board the correct bus and travel safely to and from their destinations. Bus transportation is available in the morning and afternoon to and from Owosso’s Bentley Bright Beginnings Early Childhood Center.

Lunch and RecessIn the 2019-2020 school year, all Owosso elementary school students received FREE school breakfast and lunch through a federal grant. We are optimistic that this will continue for the upcoming school year. Kindergarten students are given more time for lunch and recess and have the option of ordering hot lunch or bringing lunch from home. While eating lunch, staff members are readily available to assist students with their meals and prepare them for outdoor recess. Students enjoy physical activity and social interaction with friends on our playgrounds, which are also monitored by our caring and experienced staff.

Modernizing Our SchoolsConstruction is complete on Owosso’s three elementa-ry schools. The new additions at each elementary school house a cafeteria and other spaces for programs such as fine arts, robotics, and media centers. Construction projects on our secondary campus (6th – 12th grades) are under-way. These community-supported additions to our schools will provide modern learning spaces that are unmatched in this area. Please visit our website and district Facebook page for frequent updates on the construction projects. The Owosso community has demonstrated that our youth are our priority and they are ALL IN for Owosso!

InternationalBaccalaureate InstructionHow does International Baccalaureate (IB) teaching philosophies benefit kindergarten students? Owosso Middle School and Owosso High School are IB World Schools, offering the Middle Years Programme. IB aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. Owosso Public Schools strive to build the foundation for lifelong learning beginning in kindergarten through IB philosophies and inquiry based learning. The development of an inquiry based learner begins at an early age and IB aligns with our kindergarten philosophy. Owosso’s IB Programme supports the principles of inquiry based learning, which goes beyond memorization and equips students with skills that enable them to problem-solve and think innovatively. IB is designed to strengthen a student’s intellectual skills. IB participation is not based on a child’s intelligence quotient. Through the IB Programme, Owosso kindergarten students are taught to be:Inquirers: Curious to know about everything.Thinkers: Think and find solutions for problems.Communicators: Share their views and express their ideas while listening carefully to others.Courageous: Use determination in exploring new challenges and changes.Knowledgeable: Learn and share knowledge with others.Principled: Follow the rules. Be an honest, fair and responsible person.Caring: Care for others and the world around us.Open-Minded: Respect other’s values and traditions and seek a range of points of view.Balanced: Make healthy choices to keep mind, body and emotions balanced.Reflective: Reflect on strengths and weaknesses to increase learning.

Developmentally appropriate curriculum prepares children for kindergarten Whole group, small groups and choice activity times are scheduled

Consider these questions when determining which program is best for your child:

1. Has your child had one or more years in preschool?

If yes, your child probably will adapt to kindergarten, most children who are five years old by September 1st, go to kindergarten.

2. Do you think your child needs one more year to develop language or social skills?

If so, you might want to consider developmentally appropriate kindergarten.

3. Is your child afraid or overly worried about starting school? Most children gain confidence and independence at five years of age, whether in kindergarten or developmentally appropriate kindergarten. Our teachers help children adjust to school in nurturing ways. HOW WILL YOUR CHILD GET TO SCHOOL? Children may take the bus to developmentally appropriate kindergarten from their home school or be dropped off by a responsible adult. Bus transportation is available to rural areas in the a.m. and p.m.

HOW TO REQUEST DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE KINDERGARTEN

Register your child. Mark the developmentally appropriate kindergarten request box on the Kindergarten Registration Checklist Form and return it, with other required forms, to your home school. Age, assessment results, and space availability are all factors that our educational team takes into account when placing students in developmentally appropriate kindergarten. You will be notified of your child’s placement by mid-June.

FOOTNOTES: * Two doses given at least four weeks apart are recommended for children age 6 months through 8 years of age who are getting an influ-

enza (flu) vaccine for the first time and for some other children in this age group. § Two doses of HepA vaccine are needed for lasting protection. The first dose of HepA vaccine should be given between 12 months

and 23 months of age. The second dose should be given 6 months after the last dose. HepA vaccination may be given to any child 12 months and older to protect against hepatitis A. Children and adolescents who did not receive the HepA vaccine and are at high risk should be vaccinated against hepatitis A.

If your child has any medical conditions that put him at risk for infection or is traveling outside the United States, talk to your child’s doctor about additional vaccines that he or she may need.

NOTE: If your child misses a shot, you don’t need to start over. Just go back to your child’s doctor for the next shot. Talk with your child’s doctor if you have questions about vaccines.

Is your family growing? To protect your new baby against whooping cough, get a Tdap vaccine. The recommended time is the 27th through 36th week of pregnancy. Talk to your doctor for more details.

OWOSSO PUBLIC SCHOOLS BUSSING INFORMATION

Dear Parents of Kindergarteners: • Prior to the start of the school year, the Transportation Supervisor will contact all parents of

registered kindergarteners to confirm whether or not they will need busing and verify that the information we have on file is correct for bus tags that will be issued to their student.

• An Open House will be held at the bus garage the same time as the Elementary Open Houses.

At that time, student bus tags can be picked up. On the first day of school parents will take their kindergarten student to school. Bus tags that were not previously picked up at the bus garage will be dropped off at the students' school and made available to parents/students during orientation.

• Bussing for kindergarteners will begin on the second day of school. The student must wear

the required tag with their busing information at all times. Parents are asked to check the tags to make sure they are correct. If the information is not or the tag gets lost, please contact the Transportation Department immediately. Students will not be transported without a tag as this is for their safety.

• Because of Schools of Choice, room availability, and various school programs; students may

be shuttled from their home schools. This means some students may use transfer buses. This is a safe and efficient way of transporting our students to the various elementary schools. We have bus monitors and patrols to help with smooth transfers.

• Parents must be visible to the bus driver when their child is dropped off from school. If a

parent or guardian is not visible the child will be bused back to school, or the bus garage and someone will be contacted to pick the child up.

• The Transportation Department is open 6:00-10:30 a.m. and 2:00-5:30 p.m. You may contact

the Transportation office with any questions at 989-725-7665
