The Industrial Revolution

There are three main movements during the Industrial Revolution:

◦ Romanticism

◦ Realism

◦ Impressionism

During the early 1800s, artists appealed to life as they believed it should be rather than it really was

Partially a reaction to the Enlightenment

Glorified emotion and instinct, overemphasizing nature and the golden past

Romanticism

Imagination and emotion are more important than reason and formal rules

Intuition and a reliance on “natural” feelings are valued over controlled, rationality.

Emphasize a love of nature, and a valuing of the common, "natural" man

Characteristics of Romanticism

A new approach to literature and art during the mid-1800’s

Dealt with the realities of everyday life, and expressing observations of the social settings within their work

Realism (1865-1890)

Describes reality in detail Focuses on characters Events are usually plausible Characters are related to each other

Characteristics of Realism

An impressionist would try to evoke meaning and feeling, rather than to flatly describe

Very expressive, not literal

Impressionism

Would establish the basis for European 19th century literature, art, and music

Forever shifted from realistic scenes, introduced a new type of expression

Contributed and shaped the art forms the modern world enjoys today
