2015 ISRT Midyear Report

From: Heidi Sebastian, 2014-2015 ISRT President

A Message From the President…

It is very hard for me to believe my year as President is coming to an end. It has been a very busy year for me attending meetings, meeting new people, celebrating student success, and helping advance the society. I was even able to dabble in the world of Medical Malpractice with a CT case from Louisville. I am so thankful I chose to give back to my profession and serve in the office of President for the Indiana Society. But the year is not over and there are a few adventures awaiting me.

By the time you are reading this I will have attended the ASRT House of Delegates and Govern-ance meeting in Albuquerque, NM where I will be serving the ASRT as the Chief Sergeant at Arms. These meetings are never boring as this is where those who give back to their profession hammer out the nuts and bolts of our society on the floor with much more diligence than the US Congress and House. With this being said, the ISRT has been hammering away at our Policies and Procedures (P&Ps) in order to keep them up to date with the ASRT. I would like to personally thank Donna Long for taking the time to read through all of our P&Ps and revising so we are in alignment with the ASRT. I would also like to personally thank the ISRT Board of Director’s for giving their time to look over the P&Ps for their consideration and acceptance.

We added a new Executive Secretary at the close of the 2014 Annual Conference, Maryann Allen. She has done an excellent job with the mentorship of Jane Patton. The Executive Secretary does a lot for the ISRT. It is a job that requires dedication and devotion to the profession. It is definitely a position where one can give back to their chosen profession and make a big difference to a lot of people from be-hind the scenes. I am very thankful for both Maryann and Jane because they have done a lot to help make my time in this position a little easier.

This year was the first time in seventeen years there has not been a RT in DC day in support of CARE and MARCA. The ASRT has changed its focus on these topics and has revamped its Committee on RT Advocacy. I will be chairing this sub-committee for our region, Region 6: Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, and West Virginia. There have been a lot of things going on in the US for technologists with licensure. Now is the time for us to be actively watching what is going on because change is coming! Massachusetts is one of two states looking for RTs in CT and Medical Dosimetry to be on a taskforce for these areas. The ASRT looks for more states to move in this direction as dose continues to take a fore-front in the eyes of Medicare, as well as, the layperson. The ARRT has shifted its focus on MARCA as

well. Please stay tuned, as I am positive there will be more news to follow on Advocacy in the coming months from the ISRT and how you can get involved.

The ISRT Board has been very hard at work this past year, as they are hosting the 2015 ISRT An-nual Conference in Indianapolis, IN on September 10th and 11th. I would like to thank Kristen Sprunger for stepping up and taking on the challenge to chair the Annual Conference on top of serving as Vice President while finishing out her Bachelor degree this past May. Congratulations, Kristen!

The upcoming Annual Conference is sure to be entertaining this year as we have a variety of speakers and backgrounds coming to share with us their expertise covering the gamete from Orthopedic Injuries, Professionalism, Motivation, and New and Emerging Technologies. We are hoping to have not only General Radiography topics but also Ultrasound and Mammography lectures. My professor, Dr. Phil Ballenger, will be there to talk with us about his work with digital radiography. This will be a con-ference you will not want to miss!

As I said in my address in October, I am so thankful for those who have went before me, served as mentors for me, and paved the path for us so we could serve others in the profession of Medical Imaging. I would like to thank the ISRT Board of Directors for the countless hours they have given to the profes-sion this year to keep the society going. It takes the dedication these individuals have chosen to give so that each one of us can continue to practice in our chosen area of Medical Imaging. Without volunteers our profession will fail. I hope you can see there is a place for you somewhere in the ISRT. We need vol-unteers! When you become involved, you have endless opportunities awaiting you. I hope you choose to play the part of the “Hokey Pokey” and give back to your chosen profession so you can watch it grow into a stronger and brighter one!

Heidi Sebastian, BSRT(R)(CT)(ARRT) ISRT President, 2014-15

EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCES & SEMINARS CAN’T HAPPEN WITHOUT VOLUNTEERS TO PLAN

AND HOST THEM

Don’t let these events FADE AWAY.

The ISRT depends on its membership to plan and host the Annual Conference and One

Day Seminars held throughout the year for the purpose of completing business and providing continuing education credits to its members. Without volunteers to organize and plan these events they would not happen. All committee members automatically

receive complimentary registration to the meeting. To show their appreciation for volunteering to Chair these events, the ISRT pays a commission as well as 10% of the profit which is over and above the budgeted profit amount set by the ISRT Financial

committee from the conference or seminar to the hosting individuals. The standard

commission amounts are:

Annual Conference $300 One Day Seminar $100

Guideline Manuals and mentors are available to help you through the planning process.

Please consider planning a future event.

The ISRT needs members like YOU to keep from FADING AWAY.

If you are interested in learning more about being a conference or seminar host, please

contact any member of the ISRT Board of Directors. Contact information can be found

on the ISRT website at www.isort.org or email [email protected].

A group of imaging technologists from Indiana attended the honors evening during the ASRT Annual Governance and House of Delegates Meeting in Albuquerque, N.M. June 26-28. ISRT life member and past president William H. May, M.Ed., R.T.(R), FASRT, director of the radiologic technology program at Fortis Institute of Cookeville, Tennessee, received ASRT Life membership. Bill May is the 29th member elevated to Life Member status since the award was inaugurated in 1938. Life Members are active ASRT members who have maintained continuous membership for at least 30 years and have participated in a range of volunteer activities that demonstrate dedication to the ASRT and the radiologic technology profession. Candidates who receive the honor are selected by at least a three-quarters vote of the ASRT Board of Directors.

The 2015 Henry Konecny, RT(R) Student Scholarships were awarded to three deserving radiography students earlier this year. The purpose of the scholarships is to provide a cash award to assist in

the educational expenses of entry-level radiologic science students. Students applying for the scholarship were required to submit an application and statement of why they believed they should

receive the award. A committee of ISRT members reviewed the applicant statements and judged them on content (format, spelling, grammar, cohesion of thought, and rationale of receiving the

scholarship). Additionally, GPA and professional contribution and participation were also considered.

ISRT President Heidi Sebastian presented a combined total of $2,500 to the recipients.

Scholarship recipients were:

Oksana Kazantseva 1st Place (Ball State University)

Brittany Allen 2nd Place (Ball State University)

John Lemley 3rd Place (Ball State University)

Congratulations Oksana, Brittany, and John! The ISRT wishes you success in your future as medical imaging professionals!

The ISRT encourages all students to apply for the 2016 student scholarship.

As healthcare forges ahead into a technologically advanced world, more consumers of healthcare turn to the internet to learn about health problems, diag-noses, procedures, and treatments. Miller and West (2009) found that 31% of surveyed adults reported utilizing online websites for healthcare information. A quick Google search of lumbar myelogram for exam-ple leads the user to over 100,000 options of explana-tions of this term, descriptions of the procedure, and more medical terminology that could potentially overwhelm a patient who is unfamiliar with the world of radiology. With patient satisfaction scores setting benchmarks for quality ratings, healthcare organiza-tions seek ways to improve overall patient satisfac-tion in the competitive market when consumers of healthcare have options of where to seek treatment for their healthcare needs. Finding a unique option to connect with the consumers prior to their interaction with the healthcare facility could improve satisfaction. There are numerous avenues that patients can find information on the internet, but one may wonder what impact this information could have on a poten-tial patient. Atack and Luke (2010) conducted a study whereby participants evaluated PEPTalk, an interac-tive health education website that includes informa-tion in text and video form on various diseases, wound-care, self-injections, and diet and exercise. The study found that most patients were very satisfied with the information on the web-site and “they found the information presented on PEPTalk useful and relevant and that they had im-proved their knowledge of health” (p. 216). There is a need for consumers to have access to reliable health-care information, but limited resources for the crea-tion of materials within a healthcare organization are available (Atack & Luke, 2010). Numerous articles recommend the use of Avatars as a means of connecting people in the online envi-ronment (Gorry, 2010; Lee, Kozar, and Larsen, 2005; Taylor, 2011). GoAnimate is a website that boasts a user friendly method for creating professional videos utilizing avatars to quickly and efficiently create cus-tom videos for marketing, training, learning, or even

presentations of data analysis. Videos can be downloaded as mp4 files, exported to YouTube and other platforms, or embedded within a website. Depending on your company, there are varying plan options to fit your needs and budget starting at $39 per month. For educators, there is a GoAnimate for Schools subscription service to allow classroom usage of the GoAnimate animation studio online to create count-less videos. Cost of access to the website varies de-pending on the number of students and instructor ac-counts needed for your school. This version of GoAni-mate creates a “safe” area for students to create vid-eos that are moderated by the instructor before vid-eos may be published. Some of the items such as weapons, alcohol, or vio-lent actions are not available in the GoAnimate for Schools subscription and there is no access to other websites or social media from this site. There are nu-merous reasons why GoAnimate would be useful in a classroom setting such as engagement, classroom “flipping”, and assessment. According to the site, “Adapting material to video requires both critical thinking AND creativity…This also leads to deeper un-derstanding and learning” (GoAnimate for Schools, 2015).

After utilizing the software in a classroom setting, it is easy to see how almost any user could easily create a video within minutes as the website states. There are two options for users to explore when first setting up a video including utilizing a pre-built template (see Figure 1) or creating a customized video from scratch (see Figure 2). The pre-built template breaks down the animation process in four easy steps. Step one and two includes selecting your setting from a predetermined set of scenes associ-ated with your chosen template as well as the avatars or characters that will become your ‘actors’ in the video. Step three of the template allows the creator to enter up to 20 lines of dialogue with 180 charac-ters of type per line. Creators can opt to type the dialogue which will be converted into an automated voice or voice record dialogue using his or her own voice. The creator also has the option to add various emotions to the avatar’s face and to pick from customized voice options if using text to speech (see Fig-ure 3). The final step for the pre-built template is to preview your video and save it to the cloud storage of the GoAnimate website. After the video is saved, it is accessible in your account and can be downloaded, exported, or imbedded (see Figure 4). The customized video option opens an entire world of animation possibilities to the creator. You can change up the setting, add character motions, additional props, text boxes, background music, personal images or logos, and entrance and exit motions to bring your video to life. There are numerous editing pieces which can be overwhelming to the newcomer in the world of animation. However, with a little time and practice with the user friendly interface, videos can be created in a short amount of time. Another nice feature of GoAnimate is the availability of numerous tutorials and help guides. Launching the customized video option opens an automatic tutorial to walk the user through the processes and menu options. There is also an entire library of additional videos from how to use a template to ideas for utilizing GoAnimate in your business. GoAnimate could be utilized in the realm of healthcare for creating patient education videos regarding various radiographic procedures helping patients to understand the procedure they are about to undergo prior to arriving at the facility. It is a unique way to connect and establish a relationship with patients and may

be a beneficial method to ease anxieties experienced by certain patient populations. With its animated appearance, pediatric patients may be more apt to pay attention to any explanation provided in the cus-tomized video to create an environment that would be conducive to a successful exam with patient co-operation. Marketing teams from healthcare facilities could utilize these unique customizable videos to reach out to potential consumers and make a memorable statement that is unique from the competition. Still not sure if GoAnimate is right for your facility? GoAnimate offers a free 14 day trial to explore the possibilities of GoAnimate and allows users to actually use the website to create their own custom vid-eos. Videos will be archived and will be available to the user following a subscription purchase. GoAni-mate offers a wide range of possibilities for the healthcare provider regardless of your role within the organization. From patient education to presentation and marketing, GoAnimate could provide your organization a unique opportunity to stand out and make a difference.

Sometimes, my wife calls me a polite nag. Well, I am okay with that, because it has served me well. Sometimes you have to be persistent. Getting our members of Congress to cosponsor a bill is always a challenge. The last 5 years, I tried to encourage our Indiana US Representatives and Senators, to get behind a bill that was for basic education and certification standards for health care workers who administer radiologic procedures in the United States. We all know that some states do not have any type of licensing for our profession. Because of my efforts and the efforts of other R.T.’s in Indiana, we were able to get seven of our United States Representatives behind our push for federal education and certification standards. This is my plan to get our legislators behind our important causes. My plan can be adapted to federal and state causes such as regulatory and licensure efforts. Here is what I suggest: One of the causes you can get behind, is advocating for state licensure. There are numerous states that do not have licensing for the Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy profession. This lack of licensure, threatens our jobs and most of all, the safety of our patients. If you want to see which states lack licensure laws, go to www.ast.org/main/standards-regulations. Then start to contact your legislators. Talk to them about how important it is to have licensing or maybe you have another issue that is important to you. To find the contact in-formation for our Indiana Senators and Representatives, check out the ASRT’s Grass-roots Advo-cacy Action Center at http://cqrcengage.com/asrt. When contacting your lawmaker, make sure you send an email to his or her legislative assis-tant. In your e-mail, (and make it brief) include your contact information, and supporting infor-mation that explains your position. These legislative assistants monitor pending legislation,

Get Involved in Patient Advocacy! The American Society of Radiologic Technologist (ASRT) Grass-Roots Net-

work is a wonderful way to get involved in patient advocacy. Tutorials, advo-

cacy materials, and legislative updates are just some of the resources avail-

able. Volunteering is easy and is a great way to show your support for your

profession. Log on to www.asrt.org and click on “Standards & Regulations”.

You will then be able to access the ASRT Grass-Roots Advocacy page. The

conduct research on that legislation and advise their bosses about the issues. In my e-mails to my legislators, I always included the most important parts of the proposed legislation and the facts that supported the importance of their co-sponsorship of the bill. Now, if you don’t receive a reply, say after one week, call the legislative assistant. You will proba-bly have to leave a voice message. But don’t worry. That is okay. Now, if you don’t receive a response after 2 weeks, than send another e-mail. You might get a lit-tle discouraged. I know that I did. You need to continue to have contact with the legislative assis-tants. Things will begin to happen. There were two of the Indiana legislative assistants that ac-tually thanked me for my persistence. The key to all of this is to be “persistent.” So, as you can see, I have given you some key points on how to begin contacting your legislators. I plan on being a polite pest, in helping the ASRT and ARRT as they work to secure federal recogni-tion of radiologist assistants as non-physician providers of health care services to Medicare beneficiaries. This is one of the causes that is very important to our profession. Now is the time for everyone on the Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy profession to get “involved.”

Remember-- This is your profession and this is your future!

Be proactive!

ASRT Opens Museum and Archives

More than 600 ASRT members and honored guests attended the grand opening of the ASRT Museum and Archives on June 26 at ASRT's national office in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The result of three years of planning and preparation, the museum tells the story of the ASRT and the ra-diologic technology profession. Designed to mirror the high-tech, high-touch nature of medical imaging and radiation therapy, the museum features state-of-the art exhibits and interactive displays that showcase the

profession’s past, present and future.

Within the walls of the museum are a mix of touch tables, video screens and hands-on exhibits. The touch screens allow visitors to interact with digital media and see a side of the profession in a different light. The

videos focus on historical milestones ranging from Thomas Edison’s experiments with fluoroscopy to battle-field radiography during World War II, and the hands-on exhibits allow visitors to touch and feel history.

In addition to innovative displays, the museum honors some of the profession’s greats. Special attention is given to Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, Marie Curie, Ed Jerman and others.

According to ASRT Chief Executive Officer Sal Martino, Ed.D., R.T.(R), FASRT, CAE, the museum serves as a dedicated space that tells the story of radiologic technology."The museum highlights the profession’s

history and the radiologic technologists who have dedicated their lives to advancing the profession and pro-viding patients with high quality care. My hope is every ASRT member will have the opportunity to visit the

museum and experience everything it has to offer."

ASRT members who would like to visit the museum can schedule a tour by contacting:

My name is Katrina Hoak. I am soon to be 2015 graduate of Ball State University with an

Associate in Science degree in Radiography. I have recently been hired as a supplemental

technologist. I will be continuing my education at Ball State for a Bachelor’s of General Studies

with a minor in Biological Sciences. I have been fascinated with how medical imaging is a

non-invasive way to view what is going on inside our bodies. I hope to one day participate in

research to better understand cell mutation and how to reverse these effects.

When I was younger my brother underwent MRI and CT exams to understand why he was

developing slower. I will never forget the technologist letting me look over their shoulders to

see my brother’s head up on the screen. My uncle also works in a medical imaging department

at Eskenazi Health. He has a positive attitude towards his family and friends which has ad-

vanced him in his career. He leads a happy successful life with my aunt and their two children.

Being an ISRT student intern has shown me how the ISRT functions to make decisions

affecting technologists throughout the state. As a radiologic technologist it is important to be

aware of the decisions which affect your career. Supporting, or being, leaders in your society is

important because these people are the few who decide on the best outcome for the entire

society.

My name is Lizzy Hubenthal. I graduated this year with an Associate of Science in Radiogra-

phy at Indiana University Kokomo with highest distinction. I am continuing my education at

IUK to earn my bachelors in Medical Imaging Technology with magnetic resonance imaging as

my modality of choice. I am currently working as an ARRT certified radiologic technologist at

Advanced Medical Imaging in Kokomo, Indiana, where I am blessed to be able to practice my

acquired skills. When I am not at work or school, I enjoy spending quality time with friends

doing activities such as playing ultimate Frisbee, watching movies, or having a quality chat.

I was not always sure what career path I was going to take, but I knew I wanted to help

people in their healing process. After exploring my options I decided radiography was the

perfect blend of patient interaction and individual creativity. I became a student intern in

2014 because I believed it was an important step in understanding my future profession and

to equip myself to become a true professional. My goal is to become a traveling MRI

technologist and to possibly move to Australia to continue practicing there.
