The skeletal system has 206 bones.

When you are born, you start with 300bones, but by the time when you growup you end up with 206 bones. Bonescontain calciumthat helps you growand keep your bones healthy. Yourskeleton keeps your structure and it also

protects your inside of your body.

Your skeleton helps you walk, stand, run, jump, and move. Without yourskeleton your body will collapse.

    The Importance andFunction of your

    Skeletal System

    Bones: Thehard, dense,

calcified tissuethat forms theskeleton of mostvertebrates.Calcium: Amineral found

the mainly hardpart of the bone.

    Main Parts of the

    Skeletal System

Bones are made out ofperiosteum, compact (hard)bone, cancellous (spongy)bone, bone marrow, andcartilage.

    Some bones are flexible.

They help you to moveeasier. Some of your flexiblebones are your spine, yourshoulderand the hip. Jointshelp you connect one boneto each other.

    Spine: The spinal column of

vertebrateShoulder: The joint connecting thearm with the torsoHip: Either side of the body belowthe waist and above the thighJoint: The place where two things

    are held together

and the ribsthatprotects your heartand your lungs.

The Process thatHappens in the Skeletal

    SystemMuscles and bones work together

because muscles need bones toattach to. If not, you will be like ajellyfish.

Inside of most bones there is ahollowcanal. In some bones nervesand blood vessels run through thiscenter. Other bones are filled with ayellow or red jelly like substancecalled marrow.

Marrow produces cellsto thebody. The red bone marrow in yourbody makes about 2 million newred blood cells each second of theday.

Hollow: Having space or openinginside. Marrow: The innermost or mostimportant part of an inside bone. Cell: Basic structural unit of livingorganisms

    Keeping Your SkeletalSystem Healthy

To keep your skeletal system healthy,

you need to eat healthy food. The most

important foods are milk, cheese, broccoli and sardines.

Another way to keep your skeletalsystem healthy is by resting your bones.Doing exercise helps to keep your

    skeletal system healthy.

Eating a healthy breakfast like orangejuice and a sandwich gives energy foryour bones for the day.

You also need to maintaina normal weight to helpkeep excess weight offbone joints.

Calcium is very important. You can get it from dairyproducts as well as eggs, salmon and fish.

Kinds of Illnesses That canAffect the Skeletal System

Have you ever brokena bone? Well, brokenbones are one of thecommon injuries of theskeletal system. Theyare called fractures.

When a bone breaksthe worst thing you cando is move it. It canhurt the person ormake the injury worse.

Fracture: A complete orincomplete break in a bone.

You can also have stressfractures, but is not really easy totell. A stress fracture is a little crackin a bone. It usually happens whenyou put repetitive strain on yourbones. Resting your bones gives a

chance to your bones to rebuild. Itcan also happen when runningfarther or starting a new sport. Itstarts by a mini fracture but it canend up leading to stress fracture. Ifyou dont take care of it, it can

    be a high risk.

Bones can also get cancer. One of the bone cancers iscalled Osteosarcoma. Its a

type of cancer that involvesthe growth of canceroustumors in the fast growingregions of bones. It mostlyhappens to 15 year oldteenagers.

Another common fracture isa claviclefracture. Your clavicleruns horizontally between thetop of your sternumand

shoulderblade (scapula). Theclavicle helps your arm toconnect with your body. Mostclavicle fractures when into ashoulder or outstretched hand. You can fix it with ice and

    physical therapies.

Clavicle: Collar bone that articulateswith the sternum and scapulaforming the anterior portion of theshoulder. Sternum: A long flat bone located inthe center of the chest, serving as asupport for the collarbone and ribs. Scapula: Either of two large flattriangular bones forming the backpart of the shoulder. Shoulder: The joint connecting the

    arm to the torso.

    Cool Facts

Did you know that humans have

the same number of neck bones as

mice and giraffes? The thing is that

giraffes have them bigger and mice

    have them smaller.

More than half of your bones are

in your hands, feet and teeth.

By now I hope you learned

about the skeletal system andwhy is it important. Thisresearch helped me learn thateverybody needs a skeleton.Without this system or withoutany system you wouldn't beable to survive because eachsystem gives something tokeep your body alive. I just

want you to know that thissystem is important because ithelps you stand, walk or dothings that without it youwouldn't be able to do.
