THE IMPLEMENTATION OF TEACHING READING TECHNIQUES

FOR THE FIRST YEAR STUDENTS AT SMAN 1 SRESEH

ABSTRACT

The implementation of teaching reading focuses on the importance of the

teaching techniques used by the teacher. This research was conducted to determine

the teaching techniques used by teachers who taught in the 10th grade at SMAN 1

Sreseh. The use of reading teaching techniques can help students find ideas,

understand the material, and read well.

The research was conducted at SMAN 1 Sreseh. There was one teacher as

a research subject and twenty-five students in grade X IPS. This study used a

descriptive qualitative design to obtain information about the teaching techniques

used by the teacher. After that, to collect data, the researcher used an observation

checklist as the first instrument. The second instrument was the interview guide.

This study showed that there are several techniques used by teachers when

teaching reading. There are phonics, whole-word, language experience, context

support, teach close reading, and vary text length. The teacher implemented the

teaching techniques to help students find ideas in the reading. By applying various

teaching techniques, students are encouraged to comprehend the vocabulary and

grammar at a deeper level. The use of appropriate teaching techniques improves

students’ participation and activeness during the learning has to adjust the material.

Therefore, the teacher has to select the most suitable teaching techniques to boost

students' performance.

Keywords: teaching techniques, teaching reading.
