Since 1963, America has named the month of May as OlderAmericans Month to celebrate the great contributions of olderadults past and present.

MVP Health Care joins in the celebration by encouragingyou to Make Choices for a Healthier Future. When you con-sciously choose to develop a habit that can enhance your life, you boost your chances for a healthier future. So, starting rightnow, we recommend practicing these five healthy habits to im-prove your life.1. Exercise for 30+ Minutes Every Day.In case you need an incentive, here are proven advantages fromthe National Cancer Institute: Daily exercise helps:

• Control weight.• Maintain healthy bones, muscles and joints.• Promote psychological well-being.• Reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure,

diabetes heart disease and premature death.2. Get Enough Sleep.Sleep is vital to good health and to emotional and mental well-being. Among the important “activities” of deep sleep are:

• Rebalancing body chemistry.• Repair of tissues.• Release of certain essential hormones.• Regulation of organ systems.• Storing and filing information in the brain for

future retrieval.• Working through problems and finding possible solutions.

3. Eat Breakfast Every Morning.People who eat a breakfast that includes carbohydrates, proteinand a small amount of fat tend to:

• Take in more vitamins and minerals.• Take in less fat and cholesterol.• Generally be more successful with weight control.• Be less likely to become obese or develop diabetes.• Report feeling better physically and mentally.

4. Take Care of YourTeeth and Gums.Good dental hygiene helps greatly reduce the risk for loss ofteeth as well as heart disease! Flossing is one of the most impor-tant daily activities you can practice. If you can only floss once aday, do it at bedtime. Also:

• See your dentist twice a year.• Brush after meals.• Avoid crunching hard substances, such as ice and popcorn.

5. Stay Socially Connected.Staying socially connected helps fosters a sense of belonging, which can help prevent or overcome depression and anxiety.Consider:

• Volunteering in your community.• Joining a club.• Taking up a hobby that you can pursue with a group or a

couple of friends.

Whatever you do, make sure that it’s with people — socializ-ing is good for physical and mental health. Close friends orfamily can provide physical and emotional support in times ofneed. They can also encourage you to check out a health condi-tion that may seem small to you — such as nosebleeds orcoughing and sneezing — but could be a sign of somethingmore serious.

In short, taking care of yourself through regular exercise, enough sleep, and good nutritional and health routines helpsyou think and move better, manage stress, improve mood, andget an energy boost!

Many thanks to our2014 Retire Right Expo Gold Sponsor!
