FDREWDRDWe treasure the memories of our high school life and realize that

they will become even more priceless to us through these years of

crisis. So it is with pleasure and pride that we present the 1942

Hylander with the hopes that through it these memories will live

on forever.

DEDICATIONSincerity in helping others, sincerity in talking with others, sincerity

in laughing with others—these are some of the finest attributes a man

may possess. To a man whose musical abilities have enabled him to

lead our band to "A" ratings, to a man who is never too busy to listen

to the problems and ambitions

of his students or too occupied

to enjoy himself with these stu-

dents, to Bernard Hirsch, the

staff of '42 is happy to dedicate

this issue of the Hylander.

HISTORY ./ SENIOR CLASSFor the first time in the fall of 1938, two hundred and seventeen shy,

timid, frightened, and truly green freshmen assembled on the campus of

Marion High School. Looking at us one would never have imagined that

we could have been organized into any kind of systematic body. Much to

our surprise we soon were in the trend of things, and many of us were

finding for ourselves a place on the football, basketball, and baseball

teams. Tillie Sinclair, "Our" Cheer Leader, could plainly be heard as she

yelled on the sidelines. As vacation came and we looked back we realized

that we had not accomplished so much, but we were no longer the shy

young things that entered high school the fall before.

Leaving a few behind, we entered the Sophomore Class with one

hundred and forty members. From this group we chose Faye Black, presi-

dent; Jonas Hicks, vice-president; Doyle Ayers, secretary; and Bruce

Harris, treasurer. Again our class was active in athletics, starring Doyle

Ayers and the famous Harrises, Fred, Bruce, and Von Ray. That year the cheer leaders added a new member

from the Sophomore Class, Faye Black. The year was a mixture of joy and sorrow, for in February our

building burned. Then many changes took place, and we began to hike to classes in the elementary building,

scout cabin, and churches. For once we had excuses for our tardies. That year a new member was added to

our class, John Wellman, who soon found a place in our midst.

In the fall of 1940 we entered the new building as Juniors. O. C. Duncan headed our class as president,

with John Wellman as vice-president, Faye Black as secretary, and Tillie Sinclair as treasurer. Our same stars

shone brightly on the football field, and a new member was added to the yelling squad, Lois Watkins, who

made her debut as a cheer leader. The year was crowded with many hours of work and fun. Our first affair

was the Hallowe'en Carnival, a financial success. Louise Ramsey, a newcomer to our class, carried off the

honors as beauty queen. That year the Marionetle appeared on our campus, and Jonas Hicks, John Well-

man, O. C. Duncan, Ernest House, and other members of our class helped to make this, our first venture into

the newspaper world, a success. The play, "Oh Aunt Jcrusha," was presented, and considered a tremendous

success; so we plunged ahead with bigger ideas, the most important of which was the Junior-Senior Banquet.

This gala affair was carried out very successfully, using National Defense as the theme. For the first time in

the history of our school a recreational hour was enjoyed after the banquet. Then one of the greatest honors

bestowed upon our class was the election of seven members of the class into the Honor Society. They were

Faye Black, Murriel Carrigan, Rosalind Clark, Ruth Hawkins, Iris Mainer, Henry Leonard, and John Wellman.

We returned in the fall of 1941 as dignified seniors to prove that we were capable of filling our places

as leaders of the student body. With John Wellman as president, Otis Ledbetter and Fred Washburn as vice-

presidents, Murriel Carrigan as secretary, and Virginia Ellis as treasurer, we started our last year. Again our

class took the lead in athletics, with Fred Harris as captain of the football team, Bruce Harris winning a berth

on the all conference team, and John Wellman best all around football player. How swiftly the days have

flown ! How happy we have been ! And now we are rapidly approaching the goal to which we have so long

looked forward—graduation—when we will take our last step from high school into the world.

—Faye Black. Historian.

PROPHECY ./ SENIOR CLASS

Dear Mr. Holland:

Since my trip to South America to study Public Relations I have not

had a minute to write you. It so happened that this trip brought medirectly or indirectly in contact with every member of our 1942 senior class.

In your busy life as Admiral in the Navy for five years I don't sup-

pose you had any time to keep track of this class. Now that you have

faithfully served your country as Admiral and are again back into school

work as State Superintendent of Schools, I'm sure you will be interested

to hear about the activities of the class.

On my way to New York I ran into Pat Kirby. She had been to

Duke University to give a series of lectures on "Cancer and Its Cure,"

and was on her way back to Johns Hopkins Hospital where she is nowa medical doctor.

Pat was still up-in-the-air because of a surprise. She had, attending

her lectures at Duke University, three nurses—Edith Poole, Annie SuePittman, and June Poteat, and two doctors—Herman Baldwin and DeweyDixon. Edith, Annie Sue, and June had completed their training at the

Duke Hospital and after graduation were kept on the hospital staff there.

Herman Baldwin and Dewey Dixon are practicing medicine in Raleigh,

N. C.

Pat learned through Herman and Dewey that Arthur Byrd is an attorney in Durham. Harold Trinks is

still acting as lieutenant in Uncle Sam's peacetime program. Clifton Willis is president of the Southern Rail-

road. Henry Leonard and Harold Goodman, as co-directors of the Chicago University band, are reflecting

credit on Mr. Hirsch's training.

June, Edith, and Annie Sue all talked at once telling Pat everything that had happened during the past

ten years. According to them, Mary Miller and Claude Revis are now "Mr. and Mrs." Marie Curtis and RuthMason own and operate the Curtis-Mason 5-10 and 25 Cent Store on Main Street in Marion.

Those diamonds Ruth Teal and Alma Treadway flashed in our eyes after the Christmas vacation of 1942have proved that they were intended for something more than just simply to sparkle, for Ruth and Alma are

both happily married and have lovely homes in Marion, N. C.

Otis Ledbetter, assisted by Inez 'Webb, is taking Cincinnati with his swing. "Virginia Ellis and DorisAnderson are members of the Philadelphia Philharmonic Orchestra.

Pat was still talking when our train pulled into the Union Station in "Washington, but as she was to give

her lectures again she bade me a "bon voyage" and was gone.

As my train started puffing on its way, a lady, cultured and refined, caught my eye as she came into myPullman. At a second glance, I recognized Helen Reel. Helen had been home for a few days' rest from herconcert tours and was now making her way back to New York where once again she would thrill thousandswith her playing.

Helen had found time to keep up her correspondence with Faye Black, a prominent lawyer in Asheville,

N. C. Faye had written in her last letter that Bill Smith was a well-known electrician in Atlanta. MurrielCarrigan and Lois Watkins were with the Carolina Playmakers. Dorothy Morrison was dietitian at the Mis-sion Hospital in Asheville, N. C. Helen Smarr was an interior decorator with headquarters in Charlotte, N. C.

Doyle Ayers was general manager of the Belk-Broome Store in Marion, N. C.

Helen interrupted her reading of Faye's letter long enough to tell me that she frequently saw LockieSilver on her way to the Netc York Times ofifice where she serves as feature editi)r of that paper.

Faye's letter was not completed, so we again read with interest that '\X''illiam Rowe and Ralph McCurryhad bought controlling interest in the D. P. Pender Store of Fayetteville, N. C. June Fortune is still practicing

what she learned during her study of national defense and is still serving well-balanced lunches to school chil-

dren of McDowell County. Evelyn Dorton is married and lives in Albemarle, N. C. Robert Gibson is sports

commentator, and just a night or two ago he gave a review of' Fred and Bruce Harris' success with the ChicagoBears. Margaret Hensley is back at Marion Hi coaching her own basketball teain to victory.

The porter came through to warn us that we would soon be in New York, and the letter was again inter-

rupted. My ship was ready to sail from New York, so I had to bid Helen good-bye.

From my guest list I found that Lucille Payne and Martha BiggerstafF were on the same ship with me.Although it was late when I saw them, we talked far into the night. It seemed that everyone except me knew

they were going as missionaries to join Margaret Burroughs and Lillian Renfro who were in Brazil waiting

for their arrival.

It was Lucille and Martha who told me that William Laughridge was in the undertaking business in Forest

City, N. C, and that Francis Ruth had succeeded in getting a book of his poems published. Joyce Bost, Char-lene Dale, and Virginia Hollifield are said to be designing dresses for some outstanding actresses.

By the time we had discussed this with many of our classmates it was very late, so we had to retire. AlthoughI was tired from such a busy day, I was unable to go to sleep. For a long time I lay awake. Finally sleep cameand in a dream I was affronted by the ghost of the class of '42. It seemed that I was carried into the clouds

where I could look over all the cities of the United States. It was the spirit's wish that I learn of the class-

mates about whom I had heard nothing.

At first I was attracted by a great noise. It was in Hollywood, California. There across the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio lot strolled Fred Washburn, by vote the most eligible bachelor in Hollywood. In

studio 'C" were Walter Mask, casting director, and Rosalind Clark, make-up artist and gown designer, argu-

ing about the lighting effects most flattering to Mildred Mangum, glamorous actress-of-the-year.

Turning from Hollywood I approached New York City. Upon the twenty-fifth floor of a huge skyscraper,

I recognized Robert Hawkins, a popular lawyer, and his secretary, Gladys Carver. Hearing a big commotionin the front of this immense building, I rushed to the scene. Here I found James Neighbors, society reporter

for the New York Thnei. trying desperately to get a snapshot of Ruth Smith, now the richest lady of NewYork City.

Wishing to see some of North Carolina and my home town I turned so that I could see Raleigh. On the

campus of Meredith College Marblee Penland, absorbed in her work, was patiently teaching her pupils short-

hand and bookkeeping. Behind the closed doors of the Dean's office was Iris Mainer.

Leaving the college, I looked into the city. At the Department of Agriculture I noticed Lee Westmore-land and his secretary, Justine Curtis, diligently working out an agricultural program for the coming year.

In an adjoining building. Hazel Wilkerson sat designing models for her own "Ladies' Ready-to-Wear" de-

partment.

Now for Marion. It had certainly grown. Howard Burgin, president of the Ford Motor Company, darted

down the street and was lost in an impenetrable line of traffic. Going to the Court Square I saw Charles Rid-

dle, owner of Riddle's Furniture Store. A new institute, the Hague Orphans' Home, had been founded byMyrtle Huffman. Below the home was the new office of the Duke Power and Light Company, where WiltonHawkins, busily engaged in sending out monthly light bills, was taking care of the books.

At this time I was eager to see Asheville. There was Louise Patton, the new city librarian. In Maxine'sBeauty Shop I spied Maxine Padgett, owner, and Rubye GrindstafT, manicurist, pausing and refreshing them-

selves with ice cold bottles of Coca-Cola, from the plant managed by Truett Loudermilk. Out of Louise

Ramsey's Fur Storage Company bounced Hazel Head. She can afford two or three fur coats a season, nowthat she owns the new modernistic building which hou.ses Milady's Gown Shop.

In Durham I found Jonas Hicks supplying that city with up-to-the-minute news. On Main Street in a

jewelry store Marvin Flack was selling a diamond clip to Bill Walker for a present to his wife on her birth-

day. Bill is now a successful dentist. Kenneth Bradford, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Durham, wasslowly going to his office to write his Sunday sermon.

In the police station, Greenville, S. C, I heard Howard Burgin telling a mystery story to a group of

small boys. Oehmig Rowe is the pharmacist in the large drug store on the corner, owned by James Parker,

formerly an army pilot.

Eventually the cities seemed to grow dimmer and farther away. Screaming hysterically, I fell to earth.

Startled by voices, I sat up in bed and beside me stood Lucille and Martha with the ship's doctor. I over-

heard the whispered word "seasick ". After I explained my dream, the doctor turned on his heel and abruptly

left the room.

"Why, that wasn't a dream at all," said Lucille, "that was a vision, for what you saw is really true."

"And," added Martha, "it's really true that it is only about fifteen minutes before dinner."

Hurriedly I dressed for dinner. I was ready to go up on deck when I heard a gentle tapping at my door.

To my, "Who is it?" came the reply, "Ship's steward." When I opened the door he handed me a small white

card. Typewritten on it were these words: "The captain of the ship requests the honor of your presence at

his table this noon." Believe it or not, that invitation was from our own John Wellman. It was his ship onwhich I had sailed from New York.

I send best wishes for your happiness and success.

Yours truly,

Ruth Hawkins.

In the fall of '41 Marion High School's new coach, Charlie Walters, began the football season

with a group of 13 boys. Although hopes for a strong football team looked disastrous. Coach Waltersencouraged the boys and on September 27 the team defeated Hendersonville, 27 to 0, on their homefield. With this encouragement more boys came out for practice and by the end of the season there

were 28 hard-hitting, hustling young men on the squad.

However, much to the disappomtment of eveiyone, our scrappy little team lost to the Waynesvilleteam at Waynesville, 34 to 12, on the next Friday. Next the team played the long awaited game withMorganton, only to lose to this strong team, 7 to 0, in the last few minutes of play.

On Friday, October 24, the boys played Forest City on their home field, defeating the opposingteam, 41 to 0. Then October 31 the Rippers played one of its most thrilling games at Canton, leaving

with a scoreless tie. Playing at home the following week, the boys defeated Newton High, 65 to 0,

but then as all teams have their off days, so it was with the Marion team losing at Cherryville, 41 to

0. November 21, Thanksgiving Day, the Lincolnton team came to Marion's field and was defeated,

19 to 13, in the last 15 seconds of the last and most thrilling game of the season.

Bruce Harris and Buford Dixon were chosen as halfback and guard on the All-Western Confer-

ence Team. Bruce was selected for his hard plunging and scoring ability, and Buford was selected

for his outstanding blocking and all around playing. Captain Fred Harris, Bob Gibson, DumontChapman, Fred Washburn, Doyle Ayers, J. B. Walker, Bill Walker, Jack Byrd, and Arthur Byrdwere outstanding throughout the season. John Wellman was chosen best all around football player

and Charles Ray Baker was chosen best scrub.
