CLASS POEMSeniors ! Classmates ! The time has comeWhen friends and foes must part.

For twelve long years we've worked and played,

And, thus we got our start.

Our parents and teachers to us have meantMore than our thanks can express,

And for their never ending services

We owe our every success.

And to this dear old school of ours

And the carefree days spent here,

Our thoughts will turn in the coming years,

And many will shed a tear.

These are but a few who along the wayHave given a helping handTo make possible for each of us

The opportunities that education commands.

Graduation, to some, is a time for tears

And others think it's fun,

But it really is a time to think

For life has just begun !

The road of life is far from easy.

It's discouraging, weary, and long

But life to others will be more cheerful

If we travel with a smile and a song.

So strive and seek to do your best

In all the trials and strife

And you'll be rewarded when you reach"That Land of Perfect Life!"

Annie Lou James.

Class History

In September, 1945, with high hopes and aims we entered high school as

green-horns. Aiding us in adjusting ourselves to the many new problems

which arose were our two homeroom teachers, Miss Lassiter and Miss

Person. Heretofore we had been one big happy family, but now with chang-

ing classes and all the excitement of several boys going out for athletics,

the family began to break up.

Summer vacation over, we again turned suntanned faces to books and

studies. Now we were sophomores. Though smaller in number we knew

the ropes, and coasted gaily through the year under the direction of Miss

Person and Miss Odom. In the latter part of the winter and early spring

several girls left our family circle to marry.

Nineteen forty-seven ! High school now had under its roof 25 Juniors who

were great busybodies. We were all a'ditter over the Junior-Senior Banquet

which we gave on May 7. Our family was a busy one now with its manyclub members. We had our thumbs in the Seer and Annual pies and were

feeling most important. Our sponsors, Miss Harris and Miss Rogers,

helped us iron out our details while we kept one eye on the Seniors.

Dignified Seniors, twenty-five strong, we entered school September, 1948.

This, our last year at school, we experienced the strange feeling of happiness

and remorse, for in nine short months we would say farewell to friends and

dear old John Graham, which for twelve years had housed and watched

us grow. Class rings and such, with our various plans for the future, kept

us starry-eyed and dreamy. To Miss Walters, our Senior sponsor, and

all the teachers, we thank you for leading us ever forward. "Veni, vidi?

vici." Truly, we came, we saw, we conquered, and stepped forth onto the

road of life as proud, well adjusted adults.

Our problems have not been few.

Now we are better citizens because of you, John Graham.

Class Historian

D,uring the next six years, half a million teach-

ing positions will be available in the United

States. Thousands of men and women are

needed to replace inadequately prepared teach-

ers now in the schools, to fill the vacancies

caused by normal turnover, and to meet the

needs of the five million additional children

born during wartime. There is a need for ele-

mentary and high school teachers, college in-

structors, principals, superintendents, and edu-

cational specialists of every kind.

Now you know the law of supply and de-

mand. When your kind of training and ability

are needed, offers for it are made more and

more attractive.

That is what's happening in the teaching pro-

fession. Many communities are taking steps

to improve their local school conditions—someare granting salary increases—North Carolina

has established a definite minimum salary

schedule for teachers.

The ability to teach is a special gift, a valued

talent, and no profession provides greater per-

sonal satisfaction than teaching. If you are a

"born teacher"—make your decision now to

join this honored profession. For "Our Teach-

ers Mold Our Nation's Future," and America's

future has need of you.
