Larry Johnson intro-duced our speaker today, State Representative Dan Branch. He said that he en-joys the many diverse neigh-borhoods in his district. He said that the next Legislative session will have serious budget challenges, redis-tricting which occurs every ten years, and business that was left from the last ses-sion. He is particularly interested in impro-ving higher education. He reported that the state budget was shrunk for only the second time since WWII. Other accom-plishments in the last session were to change the franchise tax and property tax reform. Several changes were made in higher education; one was to keep tuition down. Another was to create a competi-ton among universities for research funds He reviewed the Constitutional Amend-ments currently under consideration.

THOUGHTS ON . . .

BattlesIn preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable. ~ Dwight D. Eisenhower Pick battles big enough to matter, small enough to win.

~ Jonathan KozolCarry the battle to them. Don't let them bring it to you. Put them on the defensive. And don't ever apologize for anything.

~ Harry S TrumanMore often than not, a hero’s most epic battle is the one you never see; it’s the battle that goes on within him or herself.

By The President Of The United States Of America

A ProclamationWe have a sacred trust with those who wear

the uniform of the United States of America. From the Minutemen who stood watch over Lexington and Concord to the service members who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, American veterans de-serve our deepest appreciation and respect. Our Nation’s servicemen and women are our best and brightest, enlisting in times of peace and war, ser-ving with honor under the most difficult circum-stances, and making sacrifices that many of us cannot begin to imagine. Today, we reflect upon the invaluable contributions of our country’s vet-erans and reaffirm our commitment to provide them and their families with the essential support they were promised and have earned.

Caring for our veterans is more than a way of thanking them for their service. It is an obliga-tion to our fellow citizens who have risked their lives to defend our freedom. This selflessness binds our fates with theirs, and recognizing those who were willing to give their last full mea-sure of devotion for us is a debt of honor for every American.

We also pay tribute to all who have worn the uniform and continue to serve their country as civilians. Many veterans act as coaches, teach-ers, and mentors in their communities, selfless-ly volunteering their time and expertise. They visit schools to tell our Nation’s students of their experiences and help counsel our troops return-ing from the theater of war. Margaret Collins announ-ced the Attendance Awards, capped this week by Bob Dill, with twenty-seven years.

Cub Amos introduced our speaker today, Rear Admiral Jim Eckel-

berger. He said he was spea-king in defense of the U.S. On 9-11 everything changed and it brought about a new concept of defending the

homeland. It is a new and very complex world for the military. NORTHCOM is re-sponsible for the defense of the U.S., but also must handle response to emer-gencies within the U.S.

In a disaster the responsibility of the civilian population must be considered; they are not obligated to follow orders. The worse the situation is, the more the military is relied on. Large disasters cre-ate major difficulties in dealing with the living and the dead. The living must be cared for; people must be brought in to help them, as well as food, water, and medicines. They must be removed to another location. The identification of bodies must be undertaken and the laws of inheritance upheld; there is also an opportunity for murder and theft, which must be prevented or investigated.

He also said that we are in an Age of the Unthinkable; war occurs when of-fense is cheap and defense is expen-sive. To defend against enemies, we must understand how they make deci-sions and how to avoid basing decisions on our own preconceptions.

The Defense Department should be prepared for defense, but we should be sure we do not need defense. He closed with the poem “It is the Soldier.”

associated with numerous charitable organiza-tions.

Since 1988, they have become significant fund raisers for the Dallas Ronald McDonald House with their extensive electric train collec-tion and Christmas display at NorthPark Shop-ping Center. The display opens the Saturday before Thanksgiving, November 21st, and operates through the Sunday after January 1st. Approximately 80,000 to 100,000 people visit the Trains at NorthPark every holiday season. The exhibit has grown from a small personal collection into a community driven commercial display requiring in excess of 1,500 volunteers for the six weeks of operation.

Ban and Kathleen have two grown children and two grand children (both of which enjoy toy trains – go figure).

District leaders Sandra Forster and Bill Perryman. Sandy is the

Chair of the Grants Sub- committee and has recently been recognized by RI with the highest award given to individuals, the Ser-

vice Above Self Award and was District Rotari-an of the Year last year.

Bill Perryman is the District Chair of the Foundation Committee. Bill remarked that this year M&Ms symbolize district goals Money and Membership. He complimented RCPC on their outstanding contributions to the Foundation.

There are seven major donors in the club, twelve Paul Harris Society members and 431 Paul Harris Fellows in the history of the club, and RCPC members have given a total of $624,046.33. Bill went on to say that the Ro-tary Foundation is the world’s most success-ful charity. One hundred percent of the dona-tions are given to the causes Rotary supports. Donations go into the Foundation for three years, then half is returned to the District to use for District grants and projects. The other half of the money goes to the World Fund. In 1979 Rotary formed the Health, Hunger and Humanity Program to start more comprehen-sive projects. In 1985 Rotary took on the task of eliminating polio, and today polio has been contained in only four countries. It has been estimated that five million cases of polio have been prevented.

Duct tape is like "the Force". It has a light side and a dark side, and it holds the universe together.  A man went for a walk one night and his wife asked how long he would be

On a November 1989 evening, hundreds of Rotarians participating in an International Insti-tute packed the foyer of the Hilton in West Ber-lin, anxiously waiting for taxis to take them to an event, but none arrived.

Finally, a hotel employee walked to a micro-

gone. He told her “The whole time.” If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is

probably not for you.

phone and made an announcement: ‘We have to ask for your patience because the taxis we called can’t make it to the hotel. As you will see, thousands of visitors from the eastern part of the city are on the streets, blocking access to the hotel. We have been waiting for these guests for twenty-eight years, and we ask you to wait with us. The Brandenburg gate and wall are open.’”

The fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago this month marked the beginning of monumental political changes in Europe, but also the start of a new era in Rotary.

In the months that followed, West German Rotarians developed strategies for reestablish-

ing clubs that had once existed in the eastern part of the country, in cities such as Chemnitz, Dresden, and Leipzig.

District governors from the Austrian and German districts discussed plans for expanding Rotary into East Germany and neighboring countries, including Czech-oslovakia, Hungary, and Yugoslavia. By

1995 there were ninerty-one new clubs in the reunified Germany.
