    S.B / & Co. Perfin Rod Sell

The next perfin in the series is III 55 S.B / & Co. and the company that used it is not yet known.

We initially though it was Sandilands, Buttery & Co. as a similar perfin used in the Straits Settlements was attributed to them. Now we think they both belongs to Smith, Bell & Co. an agricultural transport company in the Philippines, which traded throughout the region.

It has 56 holes with letter height of 4.5mm. It has been recorded with B62 cancels on the stamps of Queen Victoria.

Nigel Gooding’s website at http://www.nigelgooding.co.uk/Spanish/Perfins/perfin.htm also mentions S.B / & Co. being used on stamps of the Philippines from 1871 to 1886.

http://www.smithbell.com.ph gives a short history of the company with James Adam Smith sent to the Philippines in 1838 to look after the interests of Jardine Matheson & Company. The company quickly became a marine transport company, distributing rice, sugar, copra and hemp.

HKPS and Study group member Frank Drake has the following theory.

Quote The two sets of Spanish - Philippines perfins - S. B / & Co and the R. R / & CA - I think they both have connections with Jardine, Matheson & Co in the sugar business and the shipping of raw sugar from the Philippines to HK In 1878, Messrs. Jardine Matheson & Co., Ltd established the first sugar refinery in Hong Kong named China Sugar Refinery Company. It was located at East Point of Causeway Bay. At that time Gloucester Road was at the waterfront and Jardine Matheson built a company wharf to facilitate the import of raw materials and export of products. Jardines’s sugar business was unable to compete against Swire, who had set up the Taikoo Sugar Refinery, and Jardines closed their sugar trade business. Their closure matches the same time that the two set of perfins also stopped appearing on the HK QV issued stamps. Unquote.

We really do need more information on these markings.

The study group has many markings that we cannot attribute to any specific Company. We are always searching for covers that feature security marked stamps. If the cover also shows the company name and it corresponds with the security mark. We can safely assume the marking belongs to that Company. These are called proving covers.

If you have any proving covers, can you please email me a scan, and as much information as possible. My email is [email protected] , as readers know compiling the data is a slow process, however every bit of information is very useful.

Thank you, I hope you enjoy these bits of commercial history of Hong Kong.

Danny Wong FRPSL

While it is generally acknowledged that postal censorship were imposed in Hong Kong during WW1 & WW2, few took notice of postal censorship in 1925 in connection with the crisis arising from increasing anti-imperialist sentiment in China, as well as the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong. The author pioneered the study of the 1925 censorship.

My presentation on 15th March 2018 aims at expanding the sample basis of this on-going study, rather than just presenting you with results. You are most welcomed to bring items in your own collection to enrich this study and enhance its understandings. I would like to reach out for overseas collectors through e-mails as well. This study includes:

    1. WWI⼀戰: P.B.C. & O.F.I. cachets戳記, use of reseal label as censor label, censor labels標籤2. 1925 General Strike省港⼤罷⼯: P.B.C. cachet戳記3. WWII⼆戰: censor cachets, labels and wax seals檢查戳記、封條和蠟封4.

The current study is restricted to censorship of civilian mails only. This might be expanded to censorship of military personnel or internees and POWs at a later stage.

So far only five 1925 General Strike censor covers are reported. I need your help to have them properly recorded, and establish duration of usage.

Starting in 2004, all existing Local Standing Order Service account holders who renew their account for the following year will receive a special gift from the Hongkong Post, nicely designed, gold-stamped and depicting respective Zodiac signs at the beginning of the year.

The Hong Kong Philatelic Society has been given a carton each year for distribution amongst our members. We take this opportunity to thank the Hongkong Post for their generosity.

At the February members meeting a discussion was held relating to the many varieties spotted. After conferring with our President, Malcolm Hammersley, he agreed that it would be a good idea to share these interesting findings of “Red Packets” varieties with members.

2004 Year of the Monkey, right example with gold stamping omitted variety, left example with adhesive added and tied by first day commemorative cachet.

2005 Year of the Rooster, two different designs were produced this year, long and short versions, the Honking Post following account holders’ comments discontinued the short version, therefore only available for one year.

2009 Year of the Ox and 2011 Year of the Rabbit, both with gold stamping shifted downward variety.

2012 Year of the Dragon, the fourth round of the Zodiac design stamps with horizontal format stamp.
