From the 50’s Diesel became the preferred fuel for trucks thanks to …

Its very high energy density per volume (10 kWh/litre)

Its simple handling (transport, storage and distribution)

Its ability to powered high-efficiency diesel engines

Its low cost and wide availability

But …

It is the fossil fuel with the highest carbon content per energy unit (0,265 kg of CO2/ kWh)

European oil dependency is increasing continuously (78% in 2003, 88% in 2013)

Its combustion produces particulates, NO and NO2 that must be removed

Its combustion generates noise

Its production and transport can lead to major ecological damages (oil spill)

Its taxation tends to rise in Europe (CO2 x, . …)

Alternative solutions are needed for the short and the long term

Do we need alternative solutions ?Diesel + Diesel engine : a winning formula, some serious drawbacks
