What will the work trucks of to-morrow look like? How will theyuse less fuel, produce fewer emis-sions and help their operators workmore efficiently?

These are only a few of the manyquestions companies are faced withas they determine how to grow theirbusinesses in new areas while beingenvironmentally responsible. TheGreen Truck Summit has provideda look into the future of work trucksand delivered shared experiences regarding utilizing existing greentechnology.

The Green Truck Summit, heldannually in conjunction with TheWork Truck Show, brings awarenessto cutting-edge green solutions atthe forefront of technology, and hasbecome the leading educationalforum on how the “green revolu-tion” impacts vocational trucks. Now in its fifth year, the Summithas achieved a new attendancerecord and has gained national andinternational recognition for its dis-tinguished speakers and industry insights.

For the second year in a row theNational Truck Equipment Associ-ation (NTEA) is proud to be co-producing this flagship event inconjunction with CALSTART.This day-and-a-half conference hasprovided work truck industry pro-fessionals with a wealth of informa-tion. During the conference topindustry experts and “early adopter”fleet managers shared their insights, lessons learned, and the solutionsfor implementing green technolo-gies. The Summit highlighted aspects of both current and futuregreen technologies, regulatory

issues, fleet sustainability and the results of real-world deployment infleet operations.

Many of the Green Truck Sum-mit’s offerings were tailored to ad-dress today’s growing interest anddemand for environmentallyfriendly and sustainable technolo-gies. To support the work truckindustry’s growing interest in greensolutions and advanced technology, the NTEA launched a new affiliatedivision—The Green Truck Asso-ciation (GTA) in 2010. The GTAwas formed from the expressed in-terest of NTEA members and otherindustry professionals in the tech-nical aspects and ROI of integrat-ing sustainable technologies intowork trucks built across NorthAmerica. Since its formation, theGTA has grown to nearly 100 mem-ber companies, including fleets, up-fitters, equipment manufacturers, technology producers and truckOEMs. The Association has alreadyinitiated work to help shape the reg-ulations that will affect our industryin the future.

Held in conjunction with the

GTS, the Work Truck Show fea-tures the latest in green productsfrom more than 45 companies en-gaged in the green truck industry.Everything from alternative fuelsand battery technology to clean andefficient auxiliary power units werefeatured at the show.

In the work truck arena, sustain-able technology has moved beyondthe experimental stage to a univer-sal focus on economical real-worlddeployment. We hope you have en-joyed a rich learning experience andthat the next few days provide youthe opportunity to accomplish yourbusiness objectives.

We are interested in hearing yourinsights on how the NTEA andthe GTA can support your organi-zation. Please stop by the NTEAbooth #3401 to meet the staff and explore the services offered by theassociation.

Compressed natural gas fuel systemsfrom BAF Systems, a unit of SealBeach, Calif.-based Clean EnergyFuels, may be seen on trucks byKnapheide Manufacturing, Altec In-dustries and Sortimo NA.

Clean Energy announced late lastmonth that Knapheide (Booth 3741)had picked BAF as the exclusiveprovider of its proprietary, dedi-cated-CNG fuel systems forKnapheide-configured Ford servicebody vehicles, primarily Ford F-350and F-450 trucks.

“The agreement will expand op-portunities for both our companiesto meet the growing demand acrossAmerica for clean-burning, naturalgas-powered Ford service vehicles,”said BAF president John Bacon.

“BAF is the first CNG vehicle upfitter in the United States to benamed a Ford Qualified VehicleModifier for gaseous fuels, and we are honored to provide our CNG fuel system capabilities toKnapheide, a manufacturer long

recognized for its high-quality products.”

“We see a great opportunity toprovide work-ready CNG solutionsfor our Ford customers on many dif-ferent platforms,” said Knapheideengineering VP Chris Weiss.

Clean Energy noted that Quincy,Ill.-based Knapheide has been in op-eration for 163 years, and is the lead-ing U.S. producer of steel servicetruck bodies and platform/staketruck bodies. The firm has upwardsof 120 distributors.

In addition to work trucks, BAFcan convert Ford-platform taxis, vans, pickups and shuttle buses toCNG. BAF has certified its naturalgas vehicles under both U.S. EPAand California Air Resources Boardregimes, achieving SULEV – superultra low emission vehicle – emis-sions levels.

Altec (Booth 4875) has brought aFord F-450 bucket truck with a BAFfuel rig to today’s ride-and-drive. It’sa “double-green:” the vehicle is out-

fitted with Altec’s JEMS (Jobsite Energy Management System) – a battery-driven aerial lift.

BAF’s CNG fuel system is alsorepresented on a Ford Transit Con-nect at Sortimo NA’s Booth 5181.

BAE Systems formally kicked off its effort tobring its HybriDrive hybrid electric vehicle tech-nology to Class 6, 7, and 8 vocational trucks,

naming Caterpillar asits partner for trans-

missions.

“Vocational truck fleets that transition to ourheavy-duty HybriDrive system will experiencefuel savings not before seen in these truckclasses,” said BAE power and energy manage-ment VP Steve Trichka. “Our HybriDrive par-allel system is the optimal hybrid electric solutionfor vehicles that operate in diverse duty cyclesbeyond standard urban operational modes.”

BAE (Booth 5359) has placed upwards of 3,000of its series hybrid electric drives in transit buses,

mostly in North America and more recently inEurope, and said last year it is developing a par-allel variant for trucks. The buses have loggedmore than 200 million miles of revenue service, and saved more than 10 million gallons of dieselfuel, BAE says.

For trucks, the new parallel system is aimed at vehicles with duty cycles that require higher operating speedsand less frequent stops.

BAE will start with an automaticCaterpillar transmission and will

later add automatic manual, said pro-grams, power and energy manage-ment director Mike Mekhiche.

BAE uses lithium ion batteries for itsseries drives for buses, and will use lithium

ion batteries for the new parallel truck drivestoo, with suppliers to be named in the comingmonths, Mekhiche said. The battery for truckswill likely employ a slightly different chemistrythan the A123 batteries used for the buses, he said.

BAE’s hope is that “the product becomes astandard offering from OEMs,” Mekhiche said.

The strategy is for upcoming trials to create“end-user pull.” The new parallel drive is beingdemonstrated on a Freightliner M2 in the ride-and-drive.

The City of Chicago is keenly interested infielding all-electric refuse trucks as part of itslong-term plan to reduce fuel costs and emis-sions – but only if it can buy the vehicle from aU.S. manufacturer.

“We’re watching this intently and we want thefirst electric refuse truck,” said Matt Stewart, senior automotive equipment analyst with theCity of Chicago’s department of fleet manage-ment. “Someone has to start selling them herefirst, and then we’ll be the first in line to buy,”he said.

Stewart shared his views in a joint presen-tation with Mira Inbar, business developmentmanager for Dow Kokam (Booth 5350), which isproviding battery packs for all-electric refusetrucks just beginning trials in a Paris suburb. The 26-ton GVW truck is manufactured by Frenchmanufacturer PVI and features a 250 KWh /620 volt system with a Dow Kokam liquid-cooledlithium-ion batter y pack with seven cells in series and five in parallel. A total of 11 truckswill be fielded this year for the trial.

With a fleet of 600 refusetrucks and a commitment to al-ternative fuel vehicles, Chicagowould seem to be a perfect prov-ing ground for a domestic elec-tric refuse truck. The vehiclestravel at slow speeds with asteady workload, plannedschedules and one-shift opera-tion suitable for off-hour recharg-ing. Average diesel economy iscurrently just 1.8 miles per gal-lon, driven down by near con-stant idling since stops areoften literally just a few feetapart. Analysis of the opportu-nity indicates a six-year payback,Stewart said, adding the city cur-rently keeps refuse trucks for 13 or even 16 years.

Chicago has a total fleet of some 12,000vehicles, including more than 400 alt fuel vehi-cles. The city’s stated goal is increasing the al-

ternative fuel program by 10% per year. The cityuses some 10 million gallons of fuel annually, creating substantial incentives to improve effi-ciency. The total fleet includes 319 hybrids, 82CNG vehicles and eight all-electric vehicles.

If a U.S. OEM Builds It, Chicago Will Come: to a Battery Electric Garbage Truck

BAE is targeting Class 6,7, and 8 vocational trucks with its new parallel hybrid electric drivetrain.

Dow Kokam VPChuck Reardon

Daimler’s Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and BusCorp, which has placed approximately 1,000hybrid electric trucks in Japan since 2006and has also placed product in Australia,Hong Kong, and Ireland, introduced a newvehicle called the EPA 10: “It is an all newdesign and revolutionar y product with a 3-liter engine equipped with an automatedmechanical transmission which will deliverclass leading lower cost of ownership,” sayssales VP Mike Rumsey.

“This EPA 10 product is built on the samechassis for the entire world and the 4P10engine platform is common to the Nor thAmerican market and other markets aroundthe world where MFTBC is beginning to in-troduce the Canter Eco Hybrid,” Rumsey toldF&FST. “At this time we do not have definiteplans to introduce a hybrid in the North Amer-ican market, but this change in engine plat-form and introduction of the EPA 10 productis a big step for us.”

Mitsubishi Fuso said last year in Japanthat it would open a specialized hybrid testbench at its Kitsuregawa Proving Ground in Japan.

Another option in natural gas vehicles has been un-veiled by Leggett & Platt Commercial VehicleProducts: a Ford E-350 van with a dedicated com-pressed natural gas fuel system by Southern California’s Landi Renzo USA.

A Landi Renzo-L&P CNG vehicle is in the ride-and-drive this afternoon, and Ford is showing theupfitted truck at Booth 3431.

Landi Renzo USA president Andrea Landi calledL&P “an ideal partner.”

“We’re expecting the CARB and EPA certs inmid-April,” says Landi VP sales John Sledge. Cal-ifornia Air Resources Board and U.S. EPA certifi-cations are necessary to begin placing the vehicleswith operators.

Leggett & Platt is confident of winning fullQVM – Qualified Vehicle Modifier – status withFord, Sledge adds, as Atlanta-based L&P’s facil-ity in Elyria, Ohio will be a ship-though center forE-250 and E-350 cargo and passenger vans withthe Landi CNG system, with three- and four-tank options.

“Our customers have asked for alternative fueloptions for their fleets and natural gas vehiclesmake economic sense,” said L&P new businessand product development VP John Fischer. “Wealso strive to make the conversion process seam-

less,” Fischer said. “For Ford vans, simply checkthe option code [31V – effective April 1] on thevehicle order form to have it upfit with the CNGfuel system and delivered to a dealer anywhere inthe country at no additional transportation cost. The conversion adds no significant time to the process.”

Landi Renzo USA, based in Torrance, Calif., isa new (incorporated in January 2010) division ofItaly’s Landi Renzo, the world leader in gaseousfuel systems for light duty vehicles, reporting a 40%market share in CNG and propane. Fleets & Fuels ShowTimes: Howprevalent are fleet vehicles fueled bypropane autogas in the UnitedStates? What vehicle types does thatentail? Brian Feehan: Propane autogas is theleading alternative fuel in theUnited States, as well as the nation’sthird-most commonly used vehiclefuel after diesel and gasoline.

Propane-LPG fuels more than270,000 on-road vehicles today inthe United States, according to theEnergy Department, includinglight- and medium-duty pickuptrucks, vans, shuttles, taxis, deliv-ery vehicles, and school buses. Inthe past 20 months, the PropaneEducation & Research Council(PERC) and its manufacturingpartners developed 10 new on-roadvehicle platforms fueled by propaneautogas.

One of those platforms, fromPERC partner Roush CleanTech, was unveiled here.

It will be on display by Ford atBooth 3431 throughout the show.

Fleet managers can put the han-dling and performance of two vehicle platforms fueled by propaneautogas to test at the NTEA ride-and-drive. The Ford E-350 vanwith a Roush CleanTech system andGeneral Motors G-4500 series cut-away van with a CleanFuel USAsystem will both be in the ride-and-drive.

In addition to currently availablevehicles, eight new on-road plat-forms are in development by PERCand its partners.

F&FST: How is propane autogas usedoutside of North America? BF: Known around the world asautogas, propane autogas fuels morethan 15 million on-road vehiclesworldwide. Just last month, PERCco-hosted delegates from aroundthe globe for the World LP Gas

Association (WLPGA) NorthAmerican-European summit. Together they discussed how to fos-ter greater global collaboration andinnovation in developing advancedpropane autogas technologies. As aresult of discussion about the futureof propane autogas in North Amer-ica and Europe, the consensus wasthat the markets, while diverse, aremore similar than they are different.

The president and CEO ofPERC, Roy Willis, commented thatcontinued research for state-of-the-art fuel systems, and expansion ofrefueling infrastructure are vital tosustaining propane autogas as theworld’s, and America’s, leading al-ternative to gasoline and diesel.

F&FST: Which U.S. manufacturersoffer vehicles fueled by propane autogas? What growth do you seein the market? How is the industrysupporting this market? BF: There are many manufacturersdeveloping liquid propane autogasinjection engines today includingCleanFuel USA, and Roush Clean-tech. Aftermarket systems are in development by companies such asAlliance AutoGas and Impco/BRC,among others.

The North American market forvehicles fueled by propane autogasis gaining momentum as more fleetoperators become aware of the en-vironmental and economic advan-tages. PERC helps spur this growththrough research, development andcommercialization support. It alsoencourages the safe and efficient useof propane autogas through wide-ranging programs focused on safetyand training. PERC’s collaborationwith manufacturers, researchers, and government partners strength-ens technical knowledge and maxi-mizes investments in developingnew propane autogas vehicles andproducts.

F&FST: What performance level arefleet managers experiencing withvehicles fueled by propane autogas? BF: Understanding the need and expectation for high-performancevehicles, PERC’s manufacturingpartners have the ability to calibrateengines fueled by propane autogasfor increased efficiency and highercombustion. The high performanceof vehicles fueled by propane auto-gas is consistent across all PERCpartner relationships. For example, the liquid propane autogas injectionsystem developed by the propaneindustry in conjunction with itsmanufacturing partners, has provento offer the same horsepower, torque, and towing capacity ratingas gasoline-fueled equivalents, whilestill reducing emissions.

F&FST: What refueling options areavailable for these vehicles? BF: Ease of refueling has acceleratedthe growing use of vehicles fueledby propane autogas. Many fleetmanagers are realizing the advan-tages of installing an on-site refuel-ing infrastructure, such as portablepropane autogas refueling platforms,

which allow for safe refueling with-out the permanence of stationarysystems featuring undergroundpropane tanks. In a portable plat-form, also known as a skid-mountedsystem, an above-ground propanetank, dispenser, pump, piping, andcontrol panel are all mounted on aconcrete or steel frame to create aportable unit that can be installed, removed, and relocated in a matterof days.

Skid-mounted propane autogasrefueling offers several benefits forfleet managers:• They can be installed, removed, and relocated quickly and easily,• They require no permanentchanges to the installation site,• They ensure safe refueling of fleetvehicles fueled by propane autogasby trained operators, and• They provide an affordable wayto test the need for refueling stationsat various locations without invest-ing in permanent structures.

Underground storage tanks arealso an option for longer-term use.Propane autogas providers can helpfleet managers ascertain the best on-site refueling option.

Propane, known also as LPG (liquefied petroleumgas) or, for vehicles, autogas, is often billed asthe most used of the various alternative hydro-carbon fuels available today. Propane has donebetter than most others in terms of federal stim-

ulus funding for alt fuels, and an increasing num-ber of firms are offering dedicated vehicular sys-tems. General Motors said just last month thatit would offer propane cutaway chassis throughKnapheide Manufacturing (Booth 3741) in Mis-

souri using fuel systems from suppliers includ-ing Roush Cleantech (Booth 4983). We offer the following on propane for vehiclesfrom Propane Education & Research Council(PERC; Booth 5085) VP Brian Feehan.

California’s Wrightspeed is applyingknowhow developed for a battery racecar to medium duty trucks, where it seesan economic sweet spot for a high-power, series plug-in drivetrain usingtop-shelf lithium ion batteries.

“If you’re looking at vehicles that burn 3,000 or 4,000 gallons a year you’vegot some shot at paying for the batteries,” says founder and CEO Ian Wright.

He claims payback of just three years with his DDS (Digital DriveSystem),with fuel at $3 per gallon. Wrightspeed is fitting an Isuzu NPR truck with DDS,using a C30 Capstone turbine, diesel-fueled, as a generator. “The motors andcontrollers are our design,” Wright says. “The motor, controller, and two-speedgearbox is packaged as one unit. Power-to-weight is improved over currentlyavailable units by more than a factor of two.” Each motor, up to four, “can deliver 250-horsepower peak,” the company says.

The California Energy Commission has awarded nearly $1.2 million. “TheWrightspeed DDS uses electric-drive power forup to the first 40 miles per day,” states a CECsummary. “Wrightspeed expects this project tovalidate that the DDS results in a 100% increasein fuel economy under mixed driving conditions, when compared with the same truck with a dieselengine.” Fleets & Fuels, February 28

Electric Retrofits Include EngineReplacement“In the next 30 to 60 days we’ll be signing long-term supply agreements with all of our majorsuppliers,” says Dennis Baranik of Mich.-basedALTe. The Auburn Hills company also expectsto name a manufacturing partner with 100 in-stallation centers nationwide. All will be neededas a shuttle bus body specialist – also to be namedsoon – has placed a purchase order for some 3,000units per year, Baranik says.

ALTe is in the “eleventh hour” of receiving a$65 million DoE loan to help make it all happen,he told F&FST.

The firm has developed a retrofit for existingtrucks that involves not only a plug-in hybridelectric drivetrain installation but replacementof factory V-8s with much smaller engines –thereby transforming a 15 mpg truck into a 45mpg truck, with 30 or even 40 miles of all-elec-tric range.

“It’s about a 14-hour retrofit process,” Baraniksays. ALTe will use a 2-liter four-cylinder engine

Hydraulic Rig Fits Where Transmission Was“This technology with no subsidies at all willpay for itself in about two years,” says JimO’Brien, presi dent of Deerfield, Mich.-basedNRG Dynamix, which is promoting hydraulichybrid retrofits.

In a two-shift New York City taxi, he says, the NRG system could pay for itself in justone year – and pay for the car as well.

“Two guys who know what they’re doingwas swap in this system in about four hours, just like changing a transmission,” O’Briensays.

NRG has used modern engineering andmaterials to package the entire hydraulichybrid drivetrain, replete with regenerativebraking, in a new compact unit, even includ-ing the hydraulic accumulator vessels. “Theentire design is ours,” O’Brien says. “It’s anentire hybrid system that fits in the samespace that your transmission used to take.”

His payback estimate doesn’t take into ac-count the recent surge in fuel prices.

“We haven’t recalculated for the currentfuel levels,” O’Brien told F&FST. “At $2.83[per gallon] our business model madesense.”

“As the fuel prices go up, regrettably someof our competition starts to make sense.”

Like it or not, the bulk of the alternative fuel vehicle market in the United States is in Cali-fornia, where a combination of emissions con-trols and incentives has stoked demand fornatural gas cars and trucks, and for fuel-saving hybrids.

Showcasing Successes in Ad-vanced Clean Vehicle Technolo-gies and Alternative Fuels is thetheme as Santa Monica-based Gladstein Neandross & Associates readies ACT Expo 2011for May 4-7 at the Long Beach Convention Center.

“We are undeniably at a pivotal point in theworld’s use of energy in the transportation sec-tor,” said GNA CEO Erik Neandross. “Origi-nal equipment manufacturers and energysuppliers are bringing more alternative fuel andadvanced technology products to market overthe next 12-24 months than ever before.

“This fact, combined with steadily rising crudeprices, has resulted in an ideally-timed confer-ence,” Neandross said.

GNA is a veteran trade show host, having organized a series of Clean Vehicle Technolo-gies Expo, Faster Freight-Cleaner Air and bio-methane events, as well as this past years

CAPCOA climate summit in SanFrancisco. GNA also had a handin no fewer than 11 of the 25American Recovery and Rein-vestment Act Clean Cities proj-

ects that resulted in a boost of some $300 millionto the clean vehicles industry.

The Propane Education & Research Coun-cil (Booth 5085) said Monday that its 2011Propane Engine Fuel Summit would be held in

the context of ACT Expo in Long Beach, im-mediately prior to the GNA show on May 3-4.The PERC event will be webcast and there is nocharge for web participation.

The Hybrid Truck Users Forum, the name for both an annual eventand a whole series of initiatives, allcoordinated by Pasadena, Calif.-based Calstart (Booth 5367) has comea long way since it was drawn upon the back of a napkin more thanten years ago by Paul Skalny, direc-tor of the U.S. Army Tank Auto-motive Research, Development andEngineering Center’s National Au-tomotive Center, and Calstart VPFred Silver.

And so began TARDEC’s fund-ing of HTUF and its partnershipwith Calstart, which continuestoday. But the forum has nowbroadened its initial military focus

to encompass an entire commercialindustry and users as well.

“The first HTUF – there mighthave been 100 people there – hadthe highest percentage we’ve everhad since of government officials,”Skalny told F&F ShowTimes. Therewere no other interested parties.

Even then Skalny and Silver rec-ognized that to achieve anything to-ward its vision of introducing hybridtechnology to the Army, HTUFwould need to embrace commercialusers. But there weren’t any.

HTUF has since formed work-ing groups to bring together sup-pliers and users of hybrids, all in thecommercial world, and included the

military so that it could gainconfidence in hybrid drivesfrom the experience and databeing gathered in fleet useacross America.

Ten years ago there were nohybrid trucks on the road;today there are 2,500. Askedif this represents slow pro-gress, Skalny said “No. Ten yearsmight seem like a long time, but it’sa short span in terms of vehicle elec-trification, which has been going onfor over a century.” Now there are amillion and a half miles of data – andenough experience for the militaryto look seriously at hybrids.

Calstart coordinated the Green

Truck Summit held here yesterdayand Monday with Work TruckShow host NTEA, the NationalTruck Equipment Association.

HTUF 2011 has been scheduledfor October 11-13 in Baltimore.Taking the Hybrid and Electric TruckMarket to the Next Level is theplanned HTUF 2011 theme.
