WELCOME! If you have been seeking a parish community in which to pray, to learn, to join in social activity and to be of service to others – our doors and hearts are open to you. We are thankful that God has sent you to us. Newcomers are asked to introduce themselves to one of the priests and to come in or call the Parish Office during business hours, 9 AM – 5 PM, Monday – Friday. Registration Forms are in the racks at the doors of the Church, at the Parish Office and online. Please complete one and return it in the collection basket, in the mail slot at the rectory, or by mail. And once again, WELCOME!

TODAY’S READINGS

1st Reading: Exodus 22:20-26 2nd Reading: 1 Thessalonians 1:5c-10 Gospel: Matthew 22:34-40

Time Huddle - the Sunday Mass where you can encounter not only the tired and the hurt, but also the joyful and those solidly devoted to the Lord who inspire us on. Paul reminds us that we need the huddle as a supporting presence for “receiving the word in great affliction,” in times like the sudden deaths of Fr. Art Olsen or choir member David Swinney. On our own without the huddle, how easy it becomes to dismiss or fear the vulnerable alien, widow, orphan, or to live in a self-deluding bubble of imagined deserved privilege. On our own, we can slip into a fog of self-absorption, resisting to share even that extra cloak. But when we choose to be squeezed into a huddle of enlightened disciples, we hear the life-giving signal to “Love the Lord our God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence.” Running that play is a score for the Best Version of Ourselves which God always delights seeing in action. Huddle on! In the Lord’s Blessings,

Fr. Tom Libera

REFLECTION

No Huddle Disciples

… as if you had lost worldly sight, whatever is named will return

and stand in the radiance so you and I can find each other

like two trees that were lost in fog. – Anna Kamienska

The National Football League is trending away from using the huddle, that familiar circle of players anchored by the quarterback giving marching orders for the next play. As the team lines up to scrimmage, the huddle is more and more frequently replaced by the quarterback setting up a new play through code words or hand signals. Defensive units huddle even less. This speeded-up pace of the game is said to increase scoring opportunities. Some former players wonder if an element of the game’s communal experience is lost. “As players in the huddle, you’re all alone in the middle of the field but together in the same way,” comments Dallas Cowboy legend Roger Staubach. He concludes, “You see who is hurt, who’s tired or who’s spitting mad. You can take that all in, which can be powerful.” Granted, you can be reading this piece on a screen alone at work thanks to our St. Hilary web site. Still, consider the benefits of huddle time for a disciple of Jesus. Huddle time is “when two or three (or more) gather in my name.” This connecting to each other hap-pens at St. Hilary in the parking lot while waiting for school dismissal, in the gym while cheering for your favorite volley ball players, in gathering for a bible study or when praying the Rosary. And then there is our Prime

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: 2 a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; 3 a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; 4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; 5 a time to throw away stones, and a time to gath-er stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; 6 a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; 7 a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; 8 a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.

In the next few weeks, you will be receiving in the mail a brochure and commitment card for the Parish Increase Offertory Campaign. We ask that you pray for it and be pro-active in letting us know how much you can commit for your Sunday offertory, either by your Sunday envelopes or by Online Giving. Thank you for your sacrificial giving and generosity.

This Season’s Stewardship of Time & Treasure Salute:

We are 65% complete with the funding for the LED sign for our parish. We appreciate the $10,000 donation of Luzviminda L. Ang and the donation of the Men’s Club toward the funding of the LED sign. We need to raise $7,000 more, so if you can help, please do so. The LED sign will make all Mass schedules, school events, and other important parish events readily visible to the public using the California Avenue pedestrian walkway and roadway. It will also be an extra exposure for our school.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT OF THE WEEK

God is love. Everything that enriches and improves the life of another human being is founded on LOVE. Life is an echo of what we give out and what is given to us. We may want to give love, but we will always run into people who only spew hatred. Hate will scourge our soul to act and to denounce malice, injustice, and evil. This is the time to wage “WAR” against evil, and hope and trust that GOD will allow light to shine in the dark, thus ensuring peace for mankind.

PLEASE PRAY FOR THE CHURCH,

FOR ST. HILARY PARISH,

FOR OUR PRIESTS, & FOR OUR PEOPLE.

FRIEDMAN PLACE WEAVING SALE Saturday, November 11th, 1-4 pm

Friedman Place Annex 5527 N. Maplewood (at Lincoln)

Therapeutic weaving is a popular activity among the residents. It provides a sense of fulfillment and allows them to create colorful products such as scarves, placemats, hand towels and tote-bags which are wonderful to give as gifts. Weaving is both physically and mentally challenging due to the need to use the looms’ levers & treadles and the complexity of remembering patterns and sequences which is more difficult for those lacking visual cues. This creative outlet helps connect our blind residents to the world, offering a feeling of ability and accomplishment while educating the community about acceptance, inclusion and tolerance of people with perceived disabilities. Sharing the amazing artistic abilities and potential of our residents provides an opportunity to also inform others about our facility, our residents, and about blindness and limited ability as well.
