Seasonal Poem

Hello once again and don’t these months come around quickly or

is it my age? What a beautiful time of year it is with the golden leaves and lovely frosty mornings. Wrap up warm though as it is getting colder day by day. As you know we at The High Life really care about our local community and encourage you to watch out for any elderly or lonely neighbours who may need a little companionship or help during these winter months. Christmas is a time for giving and sharing – not necessarily expensive gifts but our time and compassion. As you will see our gift this month has been to sponsor a page to local charity Jigsaw which offers so many vital services. Please read page 25 and if you can donate in any way please do so. We hope you enjoy this festive edition and trust you have a lovely seasonal break and of course a wonderful New Year 2013.

YOUTHZONEGlittering Speech Night rewards outstanding students at Samworth Church AcademySamworth Church Academy was the venue for a splendid Speech Night, rewarding students for their outstanding dedication and achievements and in some cases their inspirational approach to learning and life. Seventy-eight students were awarded recognition at the ceremony for various accomplishments including highest attitude towards learning, most improved students and students of the year. The evening had eminent guest speakers in the form of Sir David Samworth CBE and Mr Mark Pyper OBE and had dance demonstrations by ‘Dance Destination’ and a performance by Samworth Church Academy Choir and musical group.Mr Mark Pyper, a governor at the Academy and recently retired Head at the famous Gordonstoun School, delivered an inspirational speech for the crowd of 500 guests and described the evening in glowing terms. He said, “Speech Night at The Samworth Church Academy really was an occasion which will be long remembered by everyone present. It was beautifully staged and technically fl awless, giving the impression of a totally professional event. Some highly accomplished singing and dancing by the students helped to create a dynamic and tingling atmosphere, preparing the way for a marvellous celebration of remarkable achievement by some highly talented and thoroughly committed young people. It was a glittering occasion with a wonderfully warm glow clearly felt by everyone present.”Dawn Meade, who was recognised for her Contribution to the

Community said, “I really wasn’t expecting it because I enjoyed doing it all last year; I didn’t do it for any recognition.”The Samworth Church Academy holds a Speech Night event annually to celebrate a year of achievement by students and this year’s event is neatly summed up by Frances Tryner, who works at the Academy. She said, “Speech Night was a stunning evening, unashamedly show-casing all of the hard work and achievements of our students at the Academy. The pride of the staff, friends and families of the students was palpable in the 500 strong audience”.

Jean’s brightening futures as a foster carer

JEAN Tarr was 54 when she decided to become a foster carer. “I was really sure it was something I wanted to do,” she said, “and two years down the line I don’t regret a thing.”

The mum-of-two, from New Whittington, Chesterfield, was keen from the start to enter into long term foster care and knew as soon as she met Polly* she knew she’d found the right child . “I wanted to really make a difference to her life,” she said. “Of course it hasn’t all been plain sailing but the support and guidance Team Fostering gives you is just superb.

“Foster children have often had a rough time of it and you need to understand that their behaviour may reflect that.

“What they need is security, routine and boundaries – because they may never have known that – and you need to be patient and stick to your guns. They need to know that if you say no you mean no.

* Not her real name.

“But it’s a two way thing and everything you give your foster child is returned to you a dozen times over.

“Fostering Polly has given us such a sense of achievement. We went to a meeting with her school teachers the other day and I was so proud I was nearly in tears.

“I would like to say to anyone thinking of fostering to just go ahead and do it. I’ve enjoyed this so much I wish I’d done it years ago.”

“I really love Polly – as much as I love my own children. Fostering her has been such an adventure and I would urge anyone who really wants to do it to get in touch withTeam Fostering.

“There is a child out there who needs you.”

Seasonal CelebrationsSeasonal CelebrationsSeasonal CelebrationsSeasonal CelebrationsSeasonal CelebrationsThe Snow Code:• Clearing pavements may cause

them to refreeze. Take care as people walking on snow and ice may slip, although they are responsible for themselves.

• Clear the snow or ice early in the day -- it’s easier to move fresh, loose snow rather than hard snow that is compacted If you remove the top layer of snow in the morning, any sunshine during the day will help melt any ice beneath.

• Use salt or sand -- not water! If you use water to melt the snow, it will refreeze and turn to black ice. You can use ordinary table or dishwasher salt -- a tablespoon for each square metre should work. If no salt, you can use sand or ash. These won’t stop the path icing over as well as salt, but will

provide good grip under foot.• Use your own salt for your own

driveway and only use the salt from council grit bins for public footways and roads so that together we have enough to go around. you can buy bags of special rock salt for home use.

• When you’re shovelling snow, take care where you put it so it doesn’t block people’s paths or drains.

• Offer to clear your neighbours’ paths. If your neighbour will have diffi culty getting in and out of their home, offer to clear snow and ice around their property as well. Check that any elderly or disabled neighbours are alright in the cold weather. If you’re worried about them, contact your local council.

Thoresby Park has been owned by the Pierrepont family since

1600.

The park was laid out in the 17th century in a formal, geometric, Jacobean style. This was subsequently softened and rounded on the advice of Capability Brown, then Humphrey Repton and Nesbit, offering a mature landscape that can now be enjoyed.

The family has built 3 houses in the park, the fi rst, a Jacobean mansion, was burnt down. The second, designed by Carr of York was demolished to make way for Salvin’s

Thoresby Hall, built by the 3rd Earl Manvers in 1860.

The History of Thoresby Thoresby remains the picture of a traditional

country Estate; its’ parkland exhibits all the grandeur of days long gone with its beautiful Grade 2 listed Courtyard Building housing a great selection of retail offers including a glass blower, jeweller, the Queen’s Royal Lancers Museum and much more. However, beneath all this lies the true Thoresby of the present day; a business, a home and a community. The park is surrounded by several thousand acres of farmland and forestry, employing 50 regular staff. The majority live here and regard it as their home; many spend their working lives on the Estate. The Estate acts as a guardian of Listed Buildings and Sites of Special Scientifi c Interest (SSSI). The Estate Offi ce and the Home Farm Offi ce are in the village of Perlethorpe, where the Agent, Farm Manager, Woodward, Bailiff and other Estate staff are based. Thoresby is a partner in the Sherwood Hideaway luxury lodge development and has a number of commercial tenants including an Antique Centre, Guest House, Farm Shop, Equestrian Centre and Paintball Site.

The High Life spoke to Russell Jones, litigation partner at local Fidler & Pepper Solicitors for his views and advice to local businesses. “Issues facing businesses at the moment, include having the relevant cover in place to allow the business to operate effi ciently, especially when work forces are stripped to the minimum in current times. Operating problems arise with requests for parental leave and/or fl exible working, both having an impact on the business and the individuals concerned”.

Russell continued “Larger business can adapt and absorb the effect of these requests, but smaller/medium sized business can often struggle to operate when these requests arrive.New shared parental leave incorporate a provision for notice of 8 weeks, which can help a business make plans after the request has been made to both parents

employers. Also employers can veto disruptive patterns of leave helping the business run smoothly.

Flexible working can work well for both employers and employees, including providing extra services by the business at odd hours and dealing with a business having demands at different times but the system could be considered restrictive on businesses and therefore unhelpful to both employers and employees.

If you would like any help on this or any other employment or business issue please contact Russell Jones or the business team at Fidler and Pepper on; 01623 448304

New Flexible Working Rules Could Provide Headache For BusinessCommenting on Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg’s speech on fl exible working and parental leave today, Ian Greenaway, President of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce (DNCC), said:

On Shared Parental Leave:

"Business is not against the principle of shared parental responsibility, but when this is applied to parental leave there is a balance to strike between doing right by staff and managing the additional workload caused by employees on leave without creating extra costs which many businesses cannot afford.

"Whilst some larger businesses and organisations may be able to absorb the impacts of this proposal, smaller fi rms will struggle to plan and arrange cover at short notice under this new and fully-fl exible

system.“It is only right that mothers are able to return to work when they feel ready and transfer their remaining parental leave and pay to their partner if that is what works best for their family. “Any such requests must allow suffi cient time for the employer to alter their planned cover after the request has been agreed by both employers, so it’s good to see that there is a requirement on employees to give a minimum of eight weeks notice before using Flexible Parental Leave and that employers will also have the ability to veto patterns of leave that don't work for them, requiring instead that the employee takes the leave in a single block.”

On Flexible Working:

“Many businesses recognise that fl exible or agile working can be a business tool that enables them to respond effectively to the modern business world with 24/7 opening, the need to communicate with other time zones and the need to deal with variable demand as well as being

of benefi t to employees increasing loyalty, improving morale and boosting productivity.

“However, many employers will fi nd the ‘one size fi ts all’ approach announced by Government today too prescriptive. Many companies already adopt their own fl exible working arrangements, but by introducing further legislation, they may reduce these to protect themselves from being subject to legal claims and perceptions of unfairness or inconsistencies in their responses to requests.

“A smarter approach would be to empower businesses to manage requests for fl exible working in a way which suits both the employer and the employee, rather than enforcing another blanket set of rules which restrict the fl exibility of businesses which want to accommodate such requests.”

Mastering Social Media“Why” you MUST be using Video in your business! Anyone that’s followed me for a while will know how much emphasis I put on mastering ‘anticipation’ in business. The simple reason for this is that if you know what the future holds, you can begin taking actions NOW for a brighter future by creating what I call an ‘unfair advantage’, putting you ahead of your competitors. This month I’d like to share some facts with you about why you must be using video as a component of your marketing strategy. As online sales (internet) increase at the expense of offl ine sales (high street) and as social media plays an increasingly important part in being found in search, you need to be able to effectively demonstrate in your web presence - your business, your personality, your values, your products, services and the compelling reasons why people should come to you instead of a competitor. Here are just some of the facts for you to consider:

Video is taking over the internet as the preferred method of communication. It is predicted that by 2015, 90% of search results will be provided using videoVideo is the next best thing to meeting and chatting face to face. Most websites on the internet are pretty pictures and faceless businesses which do not build relationships. Video is the game changer when used correctly. Visitors who watch a video are 64% more likely to purchase than other site visitorsVideo allows you to demonstrate authenticity enabling you to effectively build relationships and trust online (According to research, trust accounts for – words or text 7%, voice tone 38%, body language 55%)Product information on the internet is moving from pictures, zoom-in, virtual tours etc to video. 52% of consumers say that watching product videos makes them more confi dent about their online purchase decisions201 Billion Videos were watched online in 2011. 43.8% of all videos watched were on YouTubeAmazon (10th most visited site on the internet) are now asking for customer reviews to be by video. The evidence is clear! – Don’t delay, begin using video in your marketing

You can start affordably with little or no cost by using your smartphone camera or a palm-held camera from just £70If you add just one thing to your marketing for 2013, make sure it’s VIDEO!Wishing you much success in your business and a healthy, happy and prosperous Christmas and New Year!Kind Regards, CarlP.S. Strategy? All businesses have a strategy. Yes?

Unfortunately less than 0.5% of all of the businesses that I have ever engaged with over 23 years of business support have

a written strategy that is the active driver of the business AND is known and understood by all employees and stakeholders. So what is a business strategy that needs writing down? Firstly, it states the reason for your business? Why does it exist? What do YOU want the business to achieve? The rational for starting the business? How will the business help you achieve your PERSONAL ambition? Then, what does your business really do? This should be more about what it does for its customers, what problems it solved, why do they want it; rather than a list of products and services. This is the reason your organisation exists and then becomes your mission statement. Before you start on your business strategy you must fi rst really understand your own life goals. You then develop a business strategy to achieve those goals. This is the fundamental point of a strategy. The only reason that any of us work beyond the survival requirements of food, shelter and security, is to do something, go somewhere, build something. Going to work is to is what we do to provide the resources (mainly money) for us to achieve what we want in or from life. This sets your personal targets which are translated into business targets that allow you to achieve your personal goals. The business targets become your vision, What you need the business to achieve – normally in a 3, 5, 7 or 10 year period, or longer. This exercise also allows you to defi ne your values, how you want to live your life and run your business.Ok so you know where you want to go, the next bit is the how. What are your abilities, your strengths and weaknesses? What is your competitive edge? What training / resources do you need? Set objectives – the key tasks and actions to achieve your vision.

The rest or your strategy is then the management of it, mainly the measurement of progress, through setting short term goals down to individual levels, KPIs, fi nancial metrics etc.If you do go through this exercise, you will be in a much better competitive position that all of your competitors. You will be able to measure how you are performing. Because all of your staff now know what the business is about and what it has to achieve, they will naturally work with you to achieve the vision, especially if they can see how that will ultimately benefi t themselves with new opportunities for promotion and responsibility as the business grows. When you have a strategy, you can then brain-storm ideas that may help you achieve your vision. The Hive@Mansfi eld, Proof of Concept programme can help you assess your business ideas to evaluate the commercial potential and plan for their success. If you want to succeed, fi rst you must plan not to fail.I hope that you can now see that the most important reason for a strategy is to achieve YOUR vision and to live a creative valuable and happy life. Businesses that actively strategize perform MUCH better than those that don’t.Finally, don’t forget to thank all those people who have worked with you to achieve your success. They will then work with you to even greater success.Michael Huxley, The Hive@Mansfi eld [email protected] 01623 600 829

fashion: get the bond look

Bond girls have been a symbol of female style

for fi fty years.

Beautiful and sophisticated, each Bond

girl has made her own fashion statements and many remain fashion icons today. Here

are some of the most stylish Bond girls and tips to help you get the look.

Severine (Skyfall, 2012)

Severine, played by Berenice Marlohe, is the latest Bond girl in the new 007 blockbuster Skyfall. Beautiful, elegant and vulnerable, Severine stuns Daniel Craig’s Bond in a black fl oor-length gown, complete with transparent panels adorned with exotic appliques. This beautiful dress from Phase Eight gives the allusion of bare skin, featuring fl oral appliques and an enticing, cinched waist.

Anya Amasova (The Spy Who Loved Me, 1977)

Remember Anya Amasova’s beautiful black fl oor-length dress in The Spy Who Loved Me? That plunging neckline adorned with diamantes was set off beautifully against the exotic locations of Egypt. Barbara Bach’s Amasova, a spirited Bond girl unafraid of getting her hands dirty, stands out as one of the fi rst fearless, adventurous Bond girls. Try this gorgeous black evening dress from Hobbs’ collection to achieve Amasova’s look.

Pussy Galore (Goldfi nger, 1964)

Goldfi nger is perhaps the most stylish Bond movie of all and stars one of

the most famous Bond girls to date - Honor Blackman’s

Pussy Galore. Galore’s iconic lilac wrap-over shirt is both simple and stunning, worn in the famous stable scene where a play fi ght with Sean Connery’s Bond leads to her eventual seduction. This dress from BHS updates the ruched wrap over look for the evening with a stylish sequined skirt.

Vesper Lynd (Casino Royale, 2006)

Vesper Lynd, breaks Bond’s heart in Casino Royale, paving the way for a darker, more serious Bond, and it’s easy to see why. In a gorgeous purple evening gown, Vesper distracts Bond at a high stakes poker game before fi nding solace with him in the fi lm’s

PENSIONS REFORM SET TO HAVE MAJOR IMPACTNew rules designed to resolve the UK’s pensions savings crisis are set to have a major impact on employers and employees alike.

With people living longer and facing the possibility of funding a retirement that could now last 20 years or more, the Government is getting employers to enrol their workers automatically into a workplace pension to make it easier for people to start saving and not rely solely on the state pension.

This automatic enrolment will allow people to decide whether to stay in or opt out of a workplace pension. It began in October, starting with the largest employers, and workers (unless they specifi cally opt out) will automatically join and pay into their employers’ staff pension schemes which could be an existing or new scheme to which the employer will also contribute and the Government by way of tax relief on employees’ contributions. Smaller employers and newly formed businesses will have until 2016/17 to comply.

It is all designed to reinvigorate pension saving in the UK, create a simpler system to help people make better informed decisions about how much they need to save privately, and make it easier for them to plan for their retirement. Minister for Pensions Steve Webb has described the new reforms as “the start of a much-needed seismic shift in pension saving in this country” (Source: Department of Work & Pensions press release 1st February,

2012).

The reforms follow the failure of stakeholder pension schemes, which foundered because they required no contribution commitment from the employer and excluded many smaller employers. Automatic enrolment recognises that the solution lies in private provision and compels all employers to enrol eligible jobholders in a workplace pension scheme, unless they are already a member of a qualifying scheme. Contributions will be collected and paid to the scheme by the employer through the payroll system.

For automatic enrolment, employers will have to choose a pension scheme, perhaps an existing one or a scheme set up with a pension provider. Information from the Pension Regulator (www.thepensionsregulator.gov.uk) is now available to help companies make this decision.

A fundamental principle is that the jobholder must be enrolled and will then be able to opt out. Employers will be banned from incentivising opt-outs.

Pensions can seem a confusing subject, full of fi nancial jargon and complicated rules, and the new reforms provide much food for thought. Certainly for employers, a proper strategy is going to be essential and most large scheme advisers consider that planning should already have started. The project will require an accountable manager and team.

Employers should be mindful too of the

requirements and restrictions of the Financial Services Act. They may invite an adviser to present to staff, and there is no problem in giving staff information that includes no recommendation or advice. In addition, there is no problem recommending that employees join a scheme to which the employer contributes. It is vital that the employer informs the employee that advice is available from a fi nancial adviser, and the employer should take no fi nancial reward for establishing a scheme.

For employees, it is important to remember that your life in retirement is going to be very different from your working one, both personally and fi nancially. Outgoings are likely to be lower, but you may want to spend more money on leisure activities. Retirement is like a holiday – but every one of your retirement years has to be paid for. That is why it is essential to seek professional advice and start planning for retirement now, whatever your age, to provide an income that is going to see you through potentially many more years than those enjoyed by previous generations.

What are you doing for your community this Christmas? You and your workplace could really make a difference to local people this Christmas with Jigsaw Support Scheme

Christmas can be a time for great joy – when families travel miles to

be together for those precious days, to re-connect with each other, re-charge the batteries after what is often a stressful time getting ready, to relax, watch TV, eat drink and be merry. But for many in our community their reality is very different. Christmas is the loneliest time if you’ve got no-one. So this year we want to make a real difference to Mansfi eld and Ashfi eld’s elderly, lonely, and vulnerable by organising a Christmas lunch to remember. For so many of our service users, the Jigsaw Christmas lunch is probably their only chance to get together and make new friends. Without Jigsaw, they’ll stay at home, alone, again. So we’re asking for your help this year.Giving Christmas cards around the offi ce can be time consuming and expensive, so save time money and trees by spreading your Christmas cheer around your workplace by using our giant Christmas card. Pay a pound to the nominated

person in the offi ce, send the proceeds to Jigsaw and then we can pay towards the

cost of the meal and for transport on the day. Getting to places is the biggest barrier of all for

our service users, as so many are just not safe on public transport. So by using our giant Christmas card you’ll be helping to make a huge difference to a local, lonely and elderly person and for you, it’s one thing less on your ’to do’ list! Jigsaw has been transforming lives in Nottinghamshire since 2000. We enable local people to get the right support, delivered

in the right way, at the right time, to ensure that vulnerable people can live life, their way at home, independent, happy and safe. Our one to one and Group befriending projects help over 100 people to stay connected with others, feel valued, cared for and safe. Without a Jigsaw befriender, the four walls and the TV are the only company our service users would have and for many, it’s not only painful, detrimental to health but it’s unsafe. Without our regular visit to keep an eye on things, residential care would be the only option for some. Like Margery. She lives alone with her little dog for company. Before she got her Jigsaw volunteer she felt extremely isolated, alone and chronically lonely. But now Margery can say “I didn’t think anyone cared about me but Kelly cares” “When you’re in trouble and nobody else will or can’t help, Jigsaw never leaves you on your own. They give you support to help you through the troubled times. My

life is so much better thanks to Jigsaw.”If you would like to join us to help raise just £500.00 to help pay the transport costs and £5.00 per person toward the cost of the meal for 40 vulnerable and elderly service users please contact Ginny Cullen at fundraising@jigsawmansfi eld.org.uk Dig deep this year, spread your

At £13m investment plan to create a world class Robin Hood experience and protect historic

Sherwood Forest will provide a major boost for the local economy, says Nottinghamshire County Council.

Around 100 people could be employed through plans for a new Sherwood Forest Visitor attraction which will also generate huge visitor spend for the local economy and vital investment for the Forest itself. The fi rst phase of the project which includes a brand new visitor centre, café and shop to replace the existing facilities will open in summer 2014 and the new Discover Robin Hood attraction will welcome its fi rst visitors in spring 2015.

Nottinghamshire County Council has announced its intention to work with tourism experts from Discovery Attractions to take the legend of Robin Hood onto its next exciting chapter, while also guaranteeing continued free public access to Sherwood Forest and its ancient oaks, and preserving its unique ecology and natural surroundings.

The new attraction will be built on land acquired by the county council in 2008 opposite the existing nature reserve and visitor centre (known locally as Naish’s Field), restoring the current visitor centre site and car park to the forest.

The Discovery Attractions team has a combined experience of over 100 years and an impressive track record for their contributions and involvement in world class visitor attractions in the UK.

“We hope to excite and educate visitors from all over the world. We’re delighted to be working with Discovery Attractions to build a world class attraction befi tting our legendary hero and his forest home.”

Rob Gray, Marketing Director of Discovery Attractions said: “Robin Hood is a global brand that deserves to be celebrated, and where better to do this than at his spiritual home of Sherwood Forest. Discover Robin Hood will be the fi rst in a series of World Class visitor attractions from Discovery Attractions, based on Britain’s rich heritage of myths and legends. It will bring to life the story of Robin Hood in a way that is both entertaining and educational for kids and adults alike.

“We are absolutely delighted to be working alongside Nottinghamshire County Council and Experience Nottinghamshire to develop and operate this iconic property which will provide a real ‘wow’ factor and focus for tourism and leisure in the Nottinghamshire area.”

Jennifer Spencer, Chief Executive of Experience Nottinghamshire, said: “Sherwood Forest is a place which captures the imagination of visitors in the UK and around the world. The development of this new visitor centre has the potential not only to increase visitor numbers, but also to increase the amount of time they then spend in Nottinghamshire. We welcome this investment, which will make the most of this much-loved attraction.”

Bob White, Chairman, World Wide Robin Hood Society, said: “These are exciting times for everyone who loves Robin Hood and it is wonderful to hear of these plans which will bring benefi ts to all – and in Robin’s heartland of Sherwood Forest. Robin Hood is a powerful iconic brand and the outlaw himself would I am sure be extremely excited about what is being planned by Nottinghamshire County Council and other agencies working together on these proposals.”

Wine ReviewLofthouse Sauvignon BlancGiesen – Marlborough, New Zealand

Introduction: Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc at its best – grassy, fresh and invigorating. Background: Although wine has been produced in Marlborough since the 1970s, over recent years the name has become synonymous with Sauvignon Blanc. The style of wine is immediately recognisable, although many producers are now playing with their production techniques and are making wines that slightly differ from the herbaceous, almost pungent style that we have come to expect. One of the reasons that I particularly like this wine is because of how it started out. Lofthouse Sauvignon Blanc was fi rst made by Rod and Di Lofthouse, an English couple who moved to New Zealand and bought a vineyard, having absolutely no winemaking experience whatsoever. They relied on their neighbours’ advice and assistance, creating a wine that has become somewhat iconic in New Zealand. The

wine was so successful that Giesen, a well-known Marlborough producer, offered to buy their estate and is still produced from the Lofthouse’s original vines!

Marlborough has one of the sunniest and driest, though relatively cool climates in NZ. This means that the grapes have a long time to ripen, which intensifi es the fl avour of the grapes. The soils are stony with a sandy top soil, giving excellent drainage and encouraging the vines’ roots to dig deep for water and nutrients. Each April, the grapes are harvested by hand and after being transferred to the winery, the juice is fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness and vibrancy of fruit and acidity. On Tasting:This wine is pale, clear and the nose is incredibly fresh with cut grass and citrus character. The palate is invigorating and pretty with notes of lemon sherbert. There is a lovely fl eshy fruit character to this wine, which is beautifully balanced by a crisp acidity running right through to the fi nish. This is a perfect wine as an accompaniment to fi sh or poultry dishes but can also be enjoyed at lunch with friends. It is a happy, cheeky, sociable wine, light and uplifting….and very easy to drink!Wine review c/o. Diane Doran - Director of Mansfi eld Manor Hotel

POEM Twas the Night Before Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the houseNot a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.

And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I fl ew like a fl ash,Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snowGave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

“Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!

To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”

Extract from the Poem by Clement Clarke Moore (1779-1863)
