Welcome to our

December issue.

Well it’s that time of year again! Amazing how quick the year seemsto gain momentum from New Year celebrations to the followingChristmas. is year has been very difficult for many people, so inaddition to looking forward to Christmas celebrations and a welcomerespite from economic woes, let us all hope – 2012 is going to be abetter year for most people …

So where do we begin?! In the UK, for children (and actually most ofus adults who are children at heart!) it’s the presents! Santa Claus!Christmas tree! Sparking and glittering magic, sweets and endlessexcitement. And after the presents have been opened, the wrappingrecycled and the games have begun, by lunchtime, tired and hungry,it’s time to rest and enjoy a sumptuous feast… is is primarily, turkey(or goose), stuffing, vegetables, gravy, roast potatoes, bread sauce, followed by mince pies with brandy butter, Christmas pudding andthen in case, there is still some room for extra food to help youthrough to the evening … Christmas cake, chocolates, biscuits! …And then plans for a New Year’s Resolution which generally includesa diet and commitment to join a gym!

Every Christmas, the brave fire fighters at Loughton Fire Station, build a terrific Santa’s Grotto, so that Father Christmas, can drop byand see all the children having fun! e event is organised to supportthe Burned Children’s Club.

Last year, the Christmas fundraiser, was very successful and fullysupported by the local community. is year, Santa’s Grotto (andChristmas Market) will be for two days instead of the usual one.Activities will include: visiting Father Christmas in the Grotto (withphotograph), face paints, raffle, cakes, teas and coffees, snow machineand especially, as within the Fire Station, all children can play on thefire engines! An incredible and exciting treat for children to pretendto be heroes plus every child, will receive a free gift/toy.

Speaking to Tim Wright, about the event, he commented: “I reallylike it when we all pull together as a team and use some of our"other" skills to build the whole Santa Grotto. Alongside with ourexcellent Open Day in the summer, these dates are a real testament tothis team’s ethic. Leading up to it we are all discussing the best waysto advertise or how best to get prizes for the raffle. We get a chance tobe creative.”

From all of us here at Fish Media Group, we wish you a very MerryChristmas and very healthy, happy and successful 2012.

Until January 2012,

Reflecting 2011 –Contemplating2012… inking

back on this last year andthe features written for ourloyal readership, so muchhas happened that it hascertainly been busy andalways exciting.

Probably the biggesthighlight was PrinceWilliam’s and KateMiddleton’s marriage on 29thApril and as featured in theApril 2011 magazine. Asidemy column, we had a fabulousdouble page feature and somewonderful photographs tocommemorate this historicaland wonderful event. iswedding was a modernfairy-tale and watched bybillions around the globe and

despite the odd hiccup, such asPrince William leaving thehandbrake on his father’s,Prince Charles’s, Aston MartinDB6 Volante! – e weddingwas to perfection. Note thisfabulous vehicle, followed onfrom the DB5, used by JamesBond in underball andGoldfinger. e wedding wasspectacular and every second

of it, magnificent: Kate’s dress,Pippa’s dress, and despite thecomplications endured by thisincredible and indestructiblefamily, they have managed tosurvive, in order to continuethe Windsor dynasty. We Brits, certainly know how to put ona fabulous world-class, show!

Also and closer to home, theopening of Westfield inStratford. As more people arebecoming more familiar withthis new and excitingshopping centre, it certainly istaking a lot of locals away, from buying online. It’s nowfun to go shopping. On apersonal note, I have beenback a few times, and eachtime, I like it more and it’s noteven finished. So as itcontinues to evolve andlooking forward to 2012,Westfield and the fruition ofthe Olympic and ParalympicVillage within Olympic Park, plus the Olympic Games, ourareas will certainly be a focalpoint, as the world watches usagain. And as per usual, wewill not disappoint…As many of you have noticed,we regularly include apromotion of a local charitableevent. So, if you are lookingfor extra coverage whichwould be of interest to thereadership, do please tell usmore and wherever possible, send us photographs. We willalways try and help worthycauses. Charities supportedthis year, have included Haven

House, Richard House, Dr.Barnardos, Jewish Care, EssexInternational Search andRescue Team, Royal NationalLifeboat Institution plus somany more. For me personally, I am alwaysresearching and learning newinteresting facts relevant to theareas covered by themagazine’s circulation. e twohighlights were the literaryconnections as covered in theJuly/August 2011 magazineentitled: ‘Wanstead ExhibitionCelebrates the Literary Greatsfrom Essex’. Also that ArnoldSchwarzenegger trained in agym, not too far away fromour terra firma, when he firstarrived to London fromAustria. Despite his recent badpress, he’s still one of myfavourite actors, and whetherKindergarten Cop, HarryTasker in True Lies, or asHoward, in the brilliantChristmas film, Jingle All eWay, he’s entertaining andgreat fun.

ank you for all the lettersand emails received, yourfeedback is important to usand helps us, to keep theeditorials ‘just right’ and whichwill continue to keep youinterested and reading ourmagazines.

Well it’sthat timeof yearagain!Amazing

how quick the year seems togain momentum from NewYear celebrations to thefollowing Christmas. is yearhas been very difficult for manypeople, so in addition to lookingforward to Christmascelebrations and a welcomerespite from economic woes, letus all hope – 2012 is going to bea better year for most people …

Ultimately, Christmas celebratesthe birth of Jesus, and istherefore a very spiritual andimportant festival. e name -Christmas – is a combination of‘Christ’ and ‘Mass’. As a seasonof goodwill, kindness and joy, inaddition to the religious aspect,

we mark the day with excitingcelebrations, parties, exchangingof gifts, and bringing familiesand friends together tocelebrate as a group. isfestival is so wonderful, thatmany nationalities and otherreligions join in at some level, tobe part of this exciting holidaywhich is a key and importantdate in the calendar.

So where do we begin?! In theUK, for children (and actually most of us adults who arechildren at heart!) it’s thepresents! Santa Claus!Christmas tree! Sparking andglittering magic, sweets andendless excitement. And afterthe presents have been opened, the wrapping recycled and thegames have begun, bylunchtime, tired and hungry, it’stime to rest and enjoy a

sumptuous feast… is isprimarily, turkey (or goose),stuffing, vegetables, gravy, roastpotatoes, bread sauce, followedby mince pies with brandybutter, Christmas pudding andthen in case, there is still someroom for extra food to help youthrough to the evening …Christmas cake, chocolates, biscuits! … And then plans for aNew Year’s Resolution whichgenerally includes a diet andcommitment to join a gym!

An endless amount of To DoLists to make sure Christmasand the New Year celebrationsappear effortless and routine!Christmas cake needs to bemade (or bought!) and withenough time to mature. I alwaysadd a generous ‘drop’ of whiskeyto enhance the flavour. Anothertip is to soak the dried fruitovernight in fruit tea to both

plump up and sweeten the fruit.

Who’s coming? How many? Are there any special dietaryrequirements? All these things, considered well in advance, make it easier as the datelooms… Presents, a few spare incase of whatever?! And I wasamazed to see that even inSeptember, Harrods had aChristmas department! eshops are certainly gearedup to the commercialaspect of Christmas andhow to make it eveneasier, for us toindulge ourselves, friends and family.

Most of us areall very busy, juggling family, home work andother

responsibilities. Catering for alarge family and friends event, isan ordeal that perhaps is justtoo much for just one or twopeople. It is not unreasonableto delegate! A very good friendsuggested a list, rather like awedding list, but instead, themenu and full day’s eventsshould be itemised andcirculated to all invitees andwith option to select an aspector dish. Perhaps, responsibilityto organise the children’s game,or to bring a salad, desserts orpost-party selection ofbiscuits…. Involve everybodywho is invited as one long listfor the host/hostess, is just asingular item for another personor family.

Being invited to somebody’sChristmas party is always awelcome and kind gesture. Most guests offer some support,

so take them up on the offer! Infact,be

Phillip LeighPHILLIP LEIGH 'S LOCAL PROPERTY MARKET

END OF YEAR REPORT –THE MARKET COULD DO BETTER.

Iam sure that, like me, youare by now severelysuffering from bad newsfatigue with every piece of

written and broadcast mediaspewing out and regurgitatingthe same doom and gloomregarding the economy and theeuro crisis.

Just for once, estate agents arenot being labelled as the villainsof the piece, having just beenrelegated from the top of thepublic enemy number oneposition in the league of thedevious, dishonest anddishonourable, to now justbelow Politicians, Bankers andTabloid Journalists.

It is certainly a difficult time forforecasters and soothsayers witheach day bringing a new opinionor point of view. I am thereforeonly able to report on what hashappened or what is happeningtoday.

Bearing in mind the views Iexpress are only that of my own,and my first hand experience oflocal property, I can honestly saythat there has not been anynoticeable change in localproperty values during the past year.

As I have said many times, therewill always be the odd exception, but in the main it has beenexceptionally difficult toengender much interest inproperty that has been marketedabove £1.5 million.

We have probably been morefortunate than most in tying upa few deals at £2 million and a

little over. However, as we mustexpect, the top of our market isreceiving little attention. ebulk of business transacted hasin fact been well below the onemillion pound mark which nowrepresents a mental barrier to many.

Gone is the insatiable appetitefor large Bungalows andexpensive Apartments. istraditionally was the choice ofproperty for “empty nesters” whowere trading down afterreceiving a premium price fortheir mini mansions in theprime roads of Chigwell and

its environs. With planning permissionrecently granted for almost sixtynew apartments on four majorsites in Chigwell alone,Developers would be advised tothink very carefully whenselecting the design specificationand pricing of the proposedunits, before even digging a holein the ground. Hopefully theywill be well advised.

e days of 2003 when we soldout the entire development inBrook Parade for FaircloughHomes in just over one hourand twenty minutes, is now adistant memory, and probablynever to be repeated in mylifetime.

Out of interest we have justbeen instructed to sell one of thefinest 3 bedroom apartments inthis Showcase development atjust under £600,000.

As I stated in a recent column, buyers looking to acquire aquality home or one requiringwork or enlargement, should seethe coming Winter months as agolden opportunity to pick up abargain by getting out there andmaking offers. e old adage of

“if you don’t ask – you don’t get”should be the motto on yourshield of battle.

On the letting scene it is, aswith sales, linked toaffordability. e market isalways hot at between £800 and£1200 per month, but coolsprogressively above these figures, with even the best homes out inthe cold at figures above £4000 -£5000 per month.

We have traditionally reliedupon demands from ourPremiership footballers forhomes at these figures andabove, and over the past year hasseen several Spurs and WestHam players living in comfortand luxury. However, they haverecently found stiff competitionfrom some delightful youngpeople who have gained stardomin the TV Show, e Only Wayis Essex. e football transferwindow opens again for themonth of January, and we expectseveral new quality houses tocome on our books in readiness.

What is my prediction for 2012 ?Well as I said earlier one cannever be certain. I certainlywould not stake a fortune on it,but would be happy to takeanyone’s money who wanted towager on local prices rising.

Seasons Greetings to you all,and my best wishes if you are buying, selling, letting or renting.

Every Christmas, the brave firefighters atLoughton FireStation, build a

terrific Santa’s Grotto, so thatFather Christmas, can drop byand see all the children havingfun! e event is organised tosupport the Burned Children’sClub.

Last year, the Christmasfundraiser, was very successfuland fully supported by the localcommunity. is year, Santa’sGrotto (and Christmas Market)will be for two days instead ofthe usual one. Activities willinclude: visiting FatherChristmas in the Grotto (withphotograph), face paints, raffle, cakes, teas and coffees, snowmachine and especially, aswithin the Fire Station, allchildren can play on the fireengines! An incredible andexciting treat for children topretend to be heroes plus everychild, will receive a free gift/toy.

Speaking to Tim Wright, aboutthe event, he commented: “Ireally like it when we all pulltogether as a team and usesome of our "other" skills tobuild the whole Santa Grotto.Alongside with our excellentOpen Day in the summer, thesedates are a real testament to thisteam’s ethic. Leading up to itwe are all discussing the bestways to advertise or how best toget prizes for the raffle. We geta chance to be creative.”

Teamwork is crucial and as partof their professional day, the firefighters are close-knit and worktogether to save lives, helpingpeople involved in accidentsand they also educate the localcommunity. ey advisepreventative measures, weshould all be implementing inorder to protect ourselves, suchas the importance of safedriving. As Tim was speaking,I recalled the film Ladder 49with Joaquin Phoenix and JohnTravolta. is terrific filmcertainly helped me to

understand the horrors andbravery necessary by firefighters on a daily basis.

Tim Wright added: “We workhard on the fireground, oftendealing with some horrific stuff.

Car crashes tend to be theworst. In those environmentsit’s imperative that we work as ateam, we help each other outand we look out for each other. Most of us go through somepretty extensive training and we

work hard at the station tomaintain that level ofprofessionalism. As anemergency service we areunique. We are there to covereverything that the police orambulance cannot cover. at

means almost everything. Weare medically trained so we areoften dealing with casualties, sometimes pretty gory stuff, often on our own waiting forthe attendance of theambulance service. We aretrained and equipped to dealwith terrorist attacks and waterrescue for example.” Covered inthis year’s March issue of themagazine, a feature wasdedicated to the EssexInternational Search andRescue Team. Len Cleary ofLoughton Fire Station, was ateam member who flew out toNew Zealand, to help rescuesurvivors, trapped in thewreckage.

Speaking about the event lastyear, fire fighter Sharon Blute(who had the idea for afundraising exercise to raisemoney for the charity) said:“Last year was only meant tobe, a one-off, but it seemed sucha shame because the event wasa huge success. All the mumsand dads really encouraged usto do it again. I think everyonewho attended had a fantastictime. Because of this wedecided to run the event over

two days this time. Hopefullywe will raise twice the amountwe did last year for the BurnedChildren’s Club and make twiceas many children happy.” Lastyear, over £600 was raised forthe charity.

Fire fighter Ben Pullen, wholives locally and who is alsobased at Loughton Fire Stationadded: “'It’s great! We feel thatLoughton Fire Station shouldplay a part in providing thesetype of community basedevents. It’s something at thestation we feel very stronglyabout. Our job isn’t just aboutputting out fires and rescuingpeople - we understand that wehave an important role workingwithin the community andhelping those who are not asfortunate as ourselves.''

Speaking about last year’s event, sub officer Kevin RolandLeppard, who is the officer incharge at Loughton FireStation commented: “'Last yearIt was a real pleasure to see justhow happy all the kids were -there was a real buzz! It wasgreat, because it was a reflectionof the attitude and hard work ofeverybody involved atLoughton Fire Station. isyear the team has worked evenharder, but I know how muchthe fire fighters enjoy the fruitsof their labour - which for usmeans happy kids, happy mumsand dads and plenty of moneyraised for the charity.”

With respect to localcommunity work, Tim added:“We liaise with schools andcolleges, or cubs or brownies, delivering preventativemessages such as the dangers ofplaying with matches. It’s thisdiversity that I really love, andsometimes this often gets loston members of the public. It isnot unrealistic to say that in thecourse of a day we might besaving the life of a member ofthe public in the morning, thengo onto a visit to the localRainbows of Cubs to showthem how the hoses work!”

This season it'sofficially a man'sworld when itcomes to dressingup. With Chanel,

Stella McCartney and Dolce &Gabbana all going crazy on thecatwalks for gender-bendinglooks, there's no place forfeminine frills and frocks inyour wardrobe.

Pieces most representative ofthis trend, such as tailcoats, tuxedos and riding jackets, havebeen snatched from men'swardrobes and then toned downwith precious fabrics anddecoration.

But while the likes of AlexaChung tends to get it spot onwhile championing a quirkytomboy look, there is a dangerof going overboard... Cue LadyGaga's recent performance, on

stage in a scruffy white T-shirt,black trousers, flat boots andDanny Zuko-style quiff.

e look should be moreboy-meets-girl glam thanmechanic's apprentice. Becomea boss of the trend andcommand just the right balancewith these varying takes onandrogyny.

Oh boy, this is one seasonalstyle that's hard to ignore.

TOMBOY TACTICSCute and understated, tomboysexiness is surprisinglyeasy to exude.

Even the prettiestof day dresses caninstantly be givensome macho attitudewith a pair ofstomp-friendly flats(stiletto heels are not

an option here).ink Harry Potter for

some eccentric inspiration.Slightly askew ties andround frame glasses aredefinitely on-trend.

For the easiest way toaccess this style, try teaminga buttoned white shirt with agrandad-style cardigan orblazer for nonchalant cool.Work with trousers orshorts, plus tights, tocomplete your girl-boymakeover.

Manly finish: A pair ofchunky brogues or pennyloafers are a tomboytransformer.

BOYFRIEND BORROWERYou don't actually need a manto work this look - but if youhave one, raid his wardrobe.Husbands, dads, grandads, boyfriends and brothers, beware!

is look is all aboutoversized pieces, which can havethe added benefit of makingyour frame look smaller. Tryboyfriend jeans, baggy jumpers,a boyfriend blazer and outsizedovercoats for

size.A winter coat is your key to

mannish nirvana. Look forslouchy, man-sized cocoonshapes in earthy colours withwide sleeves, which you candress down for daytime or useto pare down glam pieces forparty time.

Manly finish: Try rocking atrilby to really give the nod toandrogyny.

SMART SUITORMasculine tailoring will add a'she means business' edge toyour working wardrobe.

ink sharp cuts, tailoredshirts and Eighties powershoulder blazers for smartdressing that takes inspirationfrom the guys.

When a top-to-toe look feelstoo extreme, balance out themannish tailoring with afeminine blouse or ladylikeovercoat for a perfectgender-blending fusion.

e tailored look extends toeveningwear too, if you teammannish tuxedo jackets withplunging silk blouses andsparkly trousers. In this instance, towering heels should feature inyour boy/girl mix.

If you're trying out a tuxedoas an alternative to eveningwear,be brave and wear nothingunderneath (except underwear)a la Victoria Beckham. Justmake sure your man is ready tohand you his overcoat when youget cold.

Manly finish: Add a bow tieor braces to play hardball withthe boy/girl trend.

TRANSFORMATION TIPSProportions are all-important. Ifyou're working an oversizedcoat or jumper, make sure it'spaired with a fitted piece onyour bottom half, like skinnytrousers, to avoid looking

swamped in ill-fittingclothes.

No lady wants to

be mistaken for a man on thestreet. If you're wearing a shirt,

unbutton for a dash of femininesex appeal.

Mannish accessories likebraces, brogues, a bow tie ortrilby will add anotherdimension to your look, but besure to team these with a morefeminine ensemble.

A white shirt is anandrogynous wardrobe classicworth investing in. Go crisp

and cotton forcasual daywear,or sensuous andsilk for eveningglamour.

Find trousersto suit yourshape andthey'll be yourboyish bestfriend for life.Wide orcropped trouserscan shorten yourlegs, whiletrousers that sitabove yourwaistline aregoodlengtheners.

It seems everyone hasheard of cosmeticdentist Ash Parmar. He certainly arrived onthe scene with a bangearlier this year with

the launch of hisstate-of-the-art dental practicein Chigwell. But what of theman himself and how he foundhis way in dentistry? Let’s find out.

Ash was born in Kenya in 1969and moved to the UK whenaged 11. His family settled inIlford and Ash attended localschools. All through hislearning, Ash favoured thesciences and when it came to ‘A’levels he thought aboutmedicine, and training to be adoctor, or dentistry. His choicewas confirmed when the Headof his 6th Form organised workexperience at a nearby dentalpractice.

“It was a new practice and I wasso impressed with what I sawthat even though I was only 15at the time, I made up my mindto go for the subjects I neededto get a place at University.”Next stop was Guys DentalHospital, one of the top dentalinstitutions, and four and a halfyears learning his craft. Hequalified in 1991 and followedthat with Vocational Trainingfor one year at a family dentalpractice in Chingford.

Over the next ten years, Ashwould build up a great portfolioas an associate and then apartnership with three flag shippractices in Hornchurch,Barnet and Hertford. It was during this time that hemet Jyoti, also a dentist. “Wewere introduced at a weddingand we just clicked” said Ash.ey married in 1996 and nowlive in Buckhurst Hill withtheir two children. Jyoti workspart time at the ChigwellPractice providing routinedentistry and also orthodontictreatment.

THE NEXT STAGE OF HISJOURNEY…..It was some years before Ash’svision for dental health becamecrystal clear. at happened inearly 2000 when he met LarryRosenthal, one of the topcosmetic dentists from NewYork. “I attended a seminar inLondon and found himinspirational and life changing”said Ash, who decided cosmetic

dentistry was the way forwardfor him. “I am a great believerin learning from the very bestand that is what I did.”

Ash went to the United Statesto spend time with LarryRosenthal, whose clienteleincluded Donald Trump,Michael Douglas andCatherine Zeta Jones. “I alsorecognized that whatever

cosmetic dentistry you aredoing, understanding about thebite and function isfundamental, and if that is notdone properly problems canoccur.” So, in order to masterand implement the techniquesneeded, Ash then sought outthe best dentists in America.en another life changingmoment occurred when he metHilt Tatum, known as the

“father of implant dentistry”.“He was doing pioneering workin this area and quickly becamethe best teacher and mentor.Yet again my philosophy toalways work with and learnfrom the best has paid off andhelped make me the person Iam now.”

But more was to come. At adental conference in 2004 at theAmerican Academy ofCosmetic Dentistry, Ash metWilliam Dorfman who was themain dentist on ExtremeMakeover in USA. Dorfmangave a seminar to 1,000 dentistswho in turn gave him astanding ovation because as aresult of the TV programme, hehad put cosmetic dentistry onthe map and significantlyincreased the profile ofdentistry in a positive way. Onthe plane on the way home,Ash made his decision tocontact a TV company in theUK to get interest in a homegrown version of the show.

EXTREME MAKEOVERCOMPELS A UKAUDIENCE…..Was it a coincidence then to beapproached by a Britishproduction company and giventhe option to be the leadcosmetic dentist on the veryfirst series of ExtremeMakeover? “ey gave us theoption to film the first seriesand it went so well they wanted

us to do more.” It was sosuccessful he went on to filmthree series. Ash was suddenlycatapulted into a media world, which came with exceptionalnational media and presscoverage, and he was high onadrenaline as he changedpeoples’ lives.

“It was a fabulous experienceand one I will remember for therest of my life” said Ash. “epeople we helped, how itchanged their lives, and thebefore and after pictures tellfascinating storylines. I had somany positive testimonials andin many ways I was blessed tobe part of it all.”

Ash’s next vision was to openhis own practice. e whole of2010 was spent researching, planning and finding the rightproperty which then neededextensive refurbishment. Nextcame the installation ofhigh-tech and revolutionaryequipment and the highestpriority was staff recruitment.Ash has built a team to ensurethat every client who walksthrough the door gets the bestexperience possible from theirtime at the practice.

e climax of a branding andmedia campaign was the launchof Smile Design by Ash at theDavid Lloyd Centre inChigwell, with over 200 peoplepresent, and a chance for Ash to

talk to his audience personallyabout his philosophy, hisexperience and the new practice.

“I am very happy with the waythe practice has steadily grown, and the quality of care andstandard of dentistry we provide.Word of mouth referrals areincreasing all the time and thebuzz I get from the emotionalreaction when people see thedifference not just to their teeth, but their smile and confidence,is so rewarding.”

Many people have experienceda “nightmare” at the dentist atsome time in their lives. It’s abarrier that is slowly comingdown. Ash provides a freeinitial consultation and offers aunique and comprehensivedental assessment; the best modern technology; digitalpictures; and comfortable, painfree treatment.

e truth lies in the case studieswhich appear each month in

this magazine. As a patient, and the author of this article, Ican certainly testify to all theclaims made by Ash.e practice also offers FacialAesthetics as an extension to a“perfect smile” with cosmeticprocedures to enhance lips andeyes by two artistic, skilled andexperienced consultants.

What of the man when he is offduty? Ash loves golf, swimming, the gym and goingto the theatre. His spiritualdevelopment is also veryimportant and he wants to putmore of his energies into hisfavourite charity in India: Foodfor Life Vrindavan-www.fflvrindavan.org. “It’sfantastic the work they do ingiving free clothing, educationand meals to the poorest of thepoor. I have seen the “roughstones” - children off the streets- transformed into “polishedjewels” as a result of this work. ”

Over and above all else, Ash is afamily man. ose familyvalues are all encompassing andhelp to make him an engagingman who is thoroughly likeableand trustworthy. Dad Bhikhuis also a partner in the businessand much valued and respected.“e only reason I have comethis far is the total support ofmy family.” said Ash. “We may have been new toChigwell, but we feel very much at home here and wanted.”www.smiledesignbyash.co.uk020 85000544

Rivers Hospital has become one of the select centres in the UK to provide laser varicose vein treatment. is procedure allows varicose veins to be treated without the need for surgeons to cut into the groin.

‘Endovenous laser treatment’ (EVLT) involves passing a laser bre along the abnormal vein. Using ultrasound to guide the bre, the surgeon is able to treat the vein without stripping it from the body. e technique means that no overnight hospital stay is needed or general anaesthetic used.

is revolutionary procedure minimises the pain and bruising associated with conventional saphenous vein stripping and means that the usual 1-2 weeks o work can be avoided, as the operation is often performed under local anaesthetic.

Rivers Hospital also provides

Sclerotherapy treatment for thread veins. read Veins (also known as Spider veins or broken veins) are a common problem, particularly a ecting women. Small red or purple veins can form anywhere on the leg and

while they do not pose any major health risk, they may cause discomfort. Sclerotherapy works by injecting the thread veins with a small amount of solution, making them fade.

As with all Rivers services, these consultations and

treatments are carried out by fully trained and registered healthcare professionals in a clean, professional and friendly environment clinic, with strict measures for the control of infection

FACT & FICTION ABOUT VARICOSE VEINS

Treatment is available on the NHS but is at very low priority. Pregnancy does cause varicose veins and can make them more noticeable if

you already have them. Crossing your legs does not give you varicose veins

Creams do help to take away the ache you get with varicose veins but they do not get rid of them.

Wearing support tights does not stop you from getting varicose veins. It’s best to have the procedure done in the winter/spring months so your legs are ready to be revealed in the summer.

Ash ParmarQ&A WITH “THE EXTREME MAKEOVER” COSMETIC DENTIST ASH PARMAR

DECAY AND FILLINGSAs we approach Christmas andwill no doubt be eating a lotmore, I thought I would write afeature on what causes cavities inteeth, and give advice on the typeof restorations available to rebuilddamaged teeth.

What is decay?Tooth decay is the commonestdental problem that requirestreatment. ere are bacteria inthe plaque that use the sugar infood and drinks to produceACID, which dissolves toothsurfaces. is causes cavities i.e.decay.

What is the treatment for decay?First and foremost, education andprevention is the key. In children,we offer fissure sealants – theseare tooth coloured sealants thathelp protect the vulnerablefissures on the biting surfaces ofthe molars and thus avoid decay. In adults, if there is a small ormedium sized cavity, then fillingscan be done with a laser withoutthe need for injections or drilling. If there is a larger cavity, then alarge white filling or a porcelaininlay should be considered. Goldand amalgam fillings are alsoavailable.

Finally, if the decay is really deepand has reached the nerve, thenroot canal treatment is required.is intricate treatment iscomfortable once the area hasbeen numbed up, but requiresincreased time and can beexpensive. It is ideal to place acrown over a root filled tooth toprotect it in the long-term.

What are the advantages oftooth coloured (white) fillings?White fillings are bonded to thetooth substance. ey are strongand long lasting. e fillings also

look very natural, and there is nomercury content (compared tothe silver amalgam fillings).

What are the two types of toothcoloured filling?Porcelain inlays or overlays areprecision made porcelain fillingsthat are securely bonded to theteeth. ey are the most cosmeticand strongest white fillingsavailable. is is because porcelainis made from ceramic material, asopposed to conventional whitefillings (composites) that are resinbased. ey are indicated for largecavities or badly broken down teeth.

For small to medium sizedcavities, composite fillings areideal. We have many shades offilling materials to match yourteeth perfectly. ese fillings arebonded to the teeth using aspecial bonding resin. We use ablue light to set the filling hardinstantly so you can eatimmediately. Careful attention ispaid to shaping and polishing therestorations to produce an idealand smooth finish.

What are the best ways ofpreventing decay?1. An annual clinical examinationand regular X-rays are essential todetect and monitor decay.2. Good oral hygiene. Patientswho clean their teeth well (i.e.good tooth brushing and dailyflossing) should have less decaybecause more of the plaque(containing bacteria) is removed.3. Reduce the frequency of sugarintake. It is important to avoidsugary things in between meals. Each time you have somethingsweet to eat, the acid that isproduced causes damage to theteeth for up to one hour.erefore, the more often youhave something sweet, the moredecay will occur. A packet of polomints eaten at regular intervalsthroughout the day can do farmore damage than a bar ofchocolate eaten in one go!4. A patient who is at risk fromdecay should use a fluoridemouthwash (e.g. ColgateFluoriguard) regularly. Fluoridestrengthens the tooth surface(enamel) and helps resist decay.5. Sugar free chewing gum.

Chewing sugar free gumfollowing a sweet meal will washaway the acid quicker byincreasing the amount of salivaproduced in your mouth. 6. Avoid sugary food/drinks lastthing at night. A cup of hotchocolate just before bed is not agood idea because whilst sleepingthere is no saliva flow. ereforethe acid will linger on the teethlonger causing more decay.

Ahappy Christmas to all those who read this column anda big thank you to those who have commented, answered questions etc. It’s been so lovely getting thefeedback. As we all approach the festive season, I wish

you a great one and a happy and healthy 2012. I love this time of theyear and the opportunity to look ahead and plan.

I think we all feared that we’d have similar weather this year tolast but so far, so good. It’s meant that I’ve enjoyed some amazingautumn walks with my East End Girls and it’s been really warm.Layers have been invaluable and as you know I recommend themfor all walking at this time of the year especially. It’s horrible to betoo warm or too cold.

Over the last couple of months, we’ve walked from Paddingtonback to Mile End along the canal and also from Mile End to theO2. e latter one has a bit of canal walking first, then along theames to Island Gardens, through the tunnel where we boughtlunch and then walked up to Blackheath through the park and had apicnic there. From our vantage points we could see our destinationbut the best laid plans meant that we didn’t quite get there in theway we expected so it was the less picturesque route most of the way.One thing you need to be aware of when you go out is the need to

have a plan B or at least be able to go off on another track. I oftencarry an A-Z to find nearest tube stops or alternative routes. I lovemaps hence the A-Z but of course a GPS on your mobile phonewill work just as well.

On the walks I’ve mentioned, they are fairly straight forward andthere are so many opt out points so you can end at a number ofplaces depending on how far you want to walk, how you feel, whatothers in your group are capable of etc. ere are also a number ofplaces ‘en route’ to eat or have coffee so all needs catered for. So greatto have these options in your locality. I love the way London is soeasily accessible as it gives such a range of places to walk.

Actually as part of my thank you’s, I need to thank all thewonderful women I walk with whose photos end up emblazoned onthe pages of this great publication and which elicit responses fromtheir friends, colleagues and loved ones. ey never know when theirhappy faces and antics will appear.

As you may have gathered I more often than not have my camerawith me and more and more I use my phone. I was looking for somephotos earlier today to illustrate a blog and I had so much joylooking back through all the memories I’ve captured. I just need tolook at photos and all the feelings and happenings of the day comeback to me.

Having mentioned a blog, I wanted to steer you in the directionof a couple of my blogs. e first is my walking group -http://eastendgirls.blogspot.com/. is one get’s updated sometimesbefore and definitely after a monthly walk. In it you’ll see the photosof the trip to Burgundy. e second blog is the one about the longdistance walk through France and Spain called the Camino. Teresa

WINTERWALKING

and I started this in 2008 and hope to cover two sectionsin 2012 to take us to the French/Spanish border.http://teresaandheatherwalkthecamino.blogspot.com/I’ve been told that this blog is very inspirational and aswell as capturing the stories for us, I’m delighted if itmotivates others to walk this too. Let me know what youthink.

I also made it back to France at the start of Novemberto plan for some breaks including walking in Burgundyand it was glorious. So many great walks to take there soif you’re into walking it’s an area worth exploring andvery quiet so no major crowds.

It has started to get a little cooler now and earlier thisweek, I had to up the layers as there was frost first thing. Also added the gloves and scarf and they were really important eventhough I was able to take them off again later. When it gets colderthey’ll stay intact.

I do realise that for some of you, when winter comes, exercisemight be the last thing on your mind but what if you could findsomething that could become part of your life and had an ease to it?

Well, that’s walking, often described by health experts as “almostperfect exercise” and, it offers an amazing number of benefits. Wouldyou believe me if I told you that a walk first thing in the morningwill set you up for the day ahead? Or that a walk in the cold after aheavy lunch will help your digestion and make you feel wonderfulwhen you return to a warm home and a hot cuppa?

My current list has 43 health benefits on it, of which 13 arephysical health related and 6 benefits to our mental health so it’s nota bad pedigree. And as 70% of adults don’t take enough exercise tobenefit their health, walking would seem to be a great place to start. It’s a low-impact, aerobic exercise suitable for just about everyoneregardless of age or size and you can do it where you want, when youwant and for as long as you want. Apart from a pair of flatcomfortable shoes which are a necessity, you even have your kit withyou when traveling. How good is that for your stress relief andwellbeing?

Only 30 minutes a day is what is generally prescribed and that’snot too difficult to fit in. Once you get that really built into yourschedule you may find that you want to take it further and explorefarther afield. Walking really helped me get to know my locality and

when I take others out they often comment on places theydidn’t know. At times when I know I should walk but timeis tight, I really think about fitting it into the other things Ihave to do. Recently a walk has often ended at the bank, dry cleaners, post office or at the supermarket and if thesupermarket, I get my weight training too. At the weekend, instead of getting into the car, I walked to deliver somegoods and killed two birds with one stone.

If you are a convert to walking, you will know thebenefits for yourself so please do tell me of your favouritewalks, I’m sure I could learn of new places for me. If you’rean arm chair walker as I discussed last month, then keepdoing as you were doing but if there is an interest then tryit out, have a go.e best way to start is slowly with yourgoal being to build up the pace to one that is comfortable

for you and where you are able to hold a conversation while you arewalking. And remember that although 10,000 steps is what theworld’s health experts maintain we need to do a day to keep ushealthy, as I said just 30 minutes of brisk walking daily can helpprevent disease, maintain weight and improve your mentalwellbeing. Even better is the fact that this 30 minutes can be brokendown into smaller chunks helping to fit it into your lifestyle. So awalk to the post box and back; up and down stairs instead of usinglifts – you know the kind of thing.

You will find that walking also improves your self- esteem, relievessymptoms of depression and anxiety, and improves your mood.ose 'feel good' endorphins that give you a healthy natural high, makes your skin glow and helps reduce stress. It relaxes us, burns upthe subcutaneous fat layer under the skin giving us better muscledefinition and making our skin look less dimpled and tauter and aswe tend to eat more healthily, we lose weight and through drinkingmore water the toxins are removed from our skin as well as the restof our bodies. Phew!

It’s a great protector from winter ills and this is the 6th year in arow now that I have not fallen foul of colds, flu etc. I know it’s mywalking and there’s no way I intend to stop. If you fear the snifflesthat this time of year brings, invest in building your immune system, get those shoes on and get walking.Heather [email protected] 8220 6919 n

Kirstie Allsopp'srushing aroundthinking aboutrobins, baubles, tinsel and all sorts

of Christmas things. While the rest of us probably

end up in a last-minute rushuntangling decorations andchecking the fairy lights, theproperty and home expert hasimpressively already chosen hercolour theme and evenproduced a hand-made Robindecoration.

"It's really early I know, andnot like me," she says with anapologetic smile. "Normally, it'swell into December before I getmyself organised, but I've beenable to 'cheat' this year as I'vedone bits and pieces over thelast few months as part of mywork."

Allsopp's been able to steal amarch on the rest of us as someof her projects for her latestChannel Four TV series,Kirstie's Handmade Britain, have been Christmas-focused.

"I've always had thechildren's home-madedecorations and now I'm goingto have my own - I'm hoping tomake a few more robins if Ihave time. It gives the tree alovely personal feel," she says.

It will be a getawayChristmas for the presenter, who's leaving London andspending the festive season inher family holiday home inDevon, with her partner, BenAndersen, their two sons, Bay,five, and Oscar, three, andAndersen's sons from hisprevious marriage, Orion 11,and Hal, eight.

"We can have an enormousreal tree there, which Benstaggers home with and thenputs up with me shoutinginstructions.

"e boys and I have a greattime choosing what to go on it,"she says with a beam.

"I absolutely love decorationsand put a lot of time intomaking the whole house lookreally festive. I'm certainly not apuritan about the 'look' -honestly, you can't have toomuch colour and sparkle," shesays.

Allsopp says there's no needto stress about seasonal decor."It's a time of year when you

can let yourimagination go wild.If you're strugglingon a colour theme, simply pick thecolour whichfeatures on most of yourbaubles.

"ere are no taste rules inmy book. e only bad tree is anundecorated tree," she says.

"I even indulged my love ofdecorations last year by buyingsome lovely new baubles andChristmas decorations formyself, and giving some away asgifts, which was really popular!"

Create a sparkling festive

setting by following decortips from Kirstie and some topinterior experts.

KIRSTIE'S HOME-MADECHRISTMAS"My favourite theme this year isred and white, which has acountry-Scandinavian feel," saysAllsopp, who demonstrates howto make decorations andgarlands on a video for B&Q.

"I like the tree and the tableto have the same colours, andfind that lots of greenery - hollyand ivy - is a calming, naturalcontrast to the fussy detail ofdecorations.

"Get a hand-made look withfelt embroidered decorations orpainted wooden ones, and add atraditional touch with tinyrobins and reindeer.

"I also love tinsel for instant

WHITE WONDERLAND"White and silver, with greenfoliage, is my favourite themethis year," says Chrissie Rucker, founder of e WhiteCompany.

"I like the home to lookmagical and use trails ofgreenery intertwined withbaubles and fairy lights for themantelpiece, the stair bannistersand on the hall table.

"As well as decorating thetree, this year I'm usingburnished silver and vintagestyle glass decorations. I threadtwo or three baubles on to a

pretty ribbon and hang it infront of windows, mirrors andpictures, and from door andcupboard handles.

"Wreaths are so versatile andI often hang one over thedining table, or lay one flat andfill it with three big white pillarcandles."

Her table decoration is classicand simple: A runner down thecentre and a parade of tealightsin glass holders, mixed withvarying sizes of glasscandlesticks, as well as glassvases filled with white roses andhyacinths.

VERY BERRY CHRISTMAS"is year's hippest Christmaslook is all about going boldwith vibrant berry shades," saysIsobel McKenzie-Price,editorial director of Ideal Homemagazine.

"Pink-toned colours likeraspberry, grape, blackcurrantand magenta have been thebest-selling shades indecorating for the pastcouple of years, so it's nosurprise that they've nowbecome the hottest lookfor the festive season."

Zingy raspberry andrich, plummy purples willgive decorations acontemporary edge, she says, especially if they're mixedwith bronze or goldaccessories to add depth.

"For impact, choose a plum

or grey tree, and go for a fewsuper-sized statementdecorations, rather than a massof tiny baubles. Mix in goldbaubles with berry shades for areally jewelled vintage look."

For a professional stylist'seffect, she advises using aselection of baubles incomplementing hues, startingwith paler pinks and shading up

to deeper purples.

"Also, work with threes forfestive drama - hang a cluster ofthree large baubles on a door, and display three wreaths on aplain wall."

Spread over 25,000square feet, Chaplinsscour the internationaldesign scene to

display over 180 of the biggestand most exciting Europeanfurniture and lighting brandsincluding B&B Italia, Cassina,Ligne Roset, Hulsta and RolfBenz, to name but a few. Allthese wonderful collections areheld under one roof, making itan inspiring one-stop solutionfor your entire homefurnishing needs.

Managing Director, SimonChaplin is the secondgeneration to take control ofwhat is a family run business.Simon’s fascination stems backto his youth, “I was fortunateenough to grow up in afurniture family so eventhough I was not working, Iwas learning through osmosis!”

Simon’s vision when takingover the Chaplins dynasty wasto not only showcase thelargest retail space showinghigh-end contemporaryfurniture and design in theUK, but to also build aconcierge service around it,offering their clients a fullytailored package from the

building stage to the finishingtouches.

He goes on to explain,“Running a business enablesme to build a team that I valuewho share the same designethos. Furniture runs in myblood, It is not a business fornumbers although they alwayshave to add up! It is a businessthat has to be led by passion orthe end result will reflect this.”

As an independent run storeall Chaplins staff have abackground in design and arequalified to give you the fullestpossible assistance, which isfriendly, expert and efficient, taking your personal wishesinto account. Simon goes on tosay, “e love of design can beseen in every element of ourcustomers’ lives, from the carsthey drive to the watches theywear to the houses they live in.It is our skill of interpretationusing these outwards signswhich enable us to connectwith our client base.”

When asked what makesChaplins unique to otherfurniture stores Simonexplains “Working with over150 design houses, it allows us

to edit collections rather thanbe dictated to by a singlebrand as many furniture storesaround Europe are. isreflects in the individuality ofour displays and crosses overto our client’s homes. AtChaplins we enjoy a freedomto express our love for designand to push boundaries andtrends quickly, without havingto run through and constantlyanalyse figures."

If all the fabulous pieces ondisplay in this design heavenproves too much for you,Chaplins also offer a ‘HomeDesign Service’ as many oftheir elegant storage systemsfor bedrooms and officesrequire an expert level ofplanning, which naturally they

provide. is includes full floorplans, plus delivery andinstallation which is alwayscarried out by their own teamof fully trained fitters whoknow how to handle furnitureand realise the importance ofeach piece, protecting andcaring for it throughoutdelivery and installation as if itwas their own.

As well as working on projectsthroughout the UK, Chaplinswork all over the world.Liasing with designers andarchitects on various sizedprojects. Recent projects haveincluded a 40 million Eurohome in Cap Ferrat, South ofFrance and 68,000 sq ftmansion in Dubai. However

they are just at home workingon a TV room in the quietsuburbs, which surround them.

So what does Simon predictwill be the next big trend incontemporary furnituredesign? “I’d like to think greatinteriors are timeless. Aninterior should reflect anindividual’s personality andlifestyle more than current trends."

Although Chaplins are veryproud of their showroom inHatch End, Middlesex theyalso appreciate that buyingtrends are changing andpeople are using the internetfor both research purposes andto make the occasionalpurchase. e Chaplinswebsite (www.chalplins.co.uk)

is well worth the visit. As wellas stylish furniture andaccessories, it features atrend-led section full ofinspiring ideas and product news.

Simon finishes up by saying"we have worked with clientsin the Essex and surroundingareas for many years and ourdelivery teams can be seen asoften there as in our ownlocality! Our furniture isperfectly suited to many of theindividual and morecontemporary homes in the area"

Lights, camera, action - the newfocus for interiorsis on winterlighting which

transforms rooms into stunningsettings.

In recent years, designers haveturned the spotlight oneverything from pendants tothe humble table lamp - and theeffects are magical.

Myriad influences have inspireddesigns, including flights offancy featuring pets and junglecreatures, the equipment usedon film sets and inphotographers' studios, and, naturally, glamour with crystaland bling adorning even simpleshades.

While designers set the trend, itcomes at a price. But these daysthe high street is quick to followwith affordable replicas sothere's no need to feel left in thedark if your budget's tight.

Follow the lighting lead of thePrime Minister's wife,Samantha Cameron, whorecently paid only a couple ofhundred pounds for areproduction of a classicArco floor lamp, shunningthe £1,600 price tag foran original.

"Samantha Cameron'snot alone in choosinga reproduction of aclassic," says DavidGutfreund, managing directorof Iconic Lightswhich sells thereproductionversion.

"Many interior designers andarchitects specify reproductionproducts, particularly during thecurrent challenging economictimes.

"Only people with more moneythan sense would pay as muchas six times more for the samething. I believe if the designerCastiglioni was alive today, hewould approve of ourreproduction, and find it hard totell the difference."

Here's my guide to the bestdesigner buys and theirmoney-saving equivalents onthe high street.
