“Caring for One Another”: Forming a Pastoral Team

in the benefice

on page 8: By Canon Brian Davis

He noticed that the people who survived the horrors of camp life best were not necessarily those who were strong physically, but those who found inner strength through thinking of good things. So he tried to help his fellow inmates to find this inner strength and not to give up, which many were tempted to do. We can take charge of ourselves, he said, whatever our outward circumstances. We can choose our own way– that’s what makes us human.

Life is hard and unpre-dictable: that is how God created this world, because that is the only sort of world where we can be free, and develop, and learn to love, and grow to be mature, responsible people. But the message of the baby in the manger and the man on the cross is that our God is commit-ted to this world in love, and to everyone in it. He is with us in our

tragedies and triumphs, in our joys and sorrows– Emmanuel, God with us. “I am with you always”. He does not protect us and shield us from what may happen, but he gives us inner strength to face life with all its uncertainties. He gives us the peace and hope that comes from believing that nothing can separate us from his love, not even death.

A Busy Time: Thank you to all those who helped in any way with the Christmas services, especially those I was involved with. I can honestly say that it has been the busiest Christmas I have ever had! I was fortunate that at Hinckley I only had one church, and at Countesthorpe two, to organise. But at the moment I have seven: six in the Hexagon benefice plus Misterton/Walcote! I particularly enjoyed the two school services at Arnesby and Husbands Bosworth. I also had one at Church Langton. And….a first: a baptism during the service at Husbands Bosworth on Christmas morning. That was very special, though I missed having children (apart from baby Phoebe) at the service. Again thank you to all who helped me at this very busy time.

Revision of Parish Electoral Roll: The Electoral Roll is the list of names and addresses of a church’s membership. Every person listed on the Roll is eligible to attend the Annual Parochial Church Meeting. A new Roll has to be created in 2013 and is renewed every six years. Notices of revision should be advertised 5-6 weeks before the APCM. Anyone who is not already a member and wishes to be entered on the Roll should fill out an application form. The appropriate changes will then be made. Some parishes have an Electoral Roll Officer who will organise this. Contact Di Jones on 01858 880741 if you have any queries.

66 Years Ago: Although we are complaining about the present freeze-up, here’s a reminder of what it was like in the first months of 1947. The lowest temperature was in Wymeswold on Feb 24th– it was -3°F(-19°C); there were power cuts of up to four hours in many parts of the county; gas pipes froze and a 12 inch water main froze in Hinckley. Snow drifts of up to 20ft blocked most of the main lines. Stranded trains and trams had to be abandoned in Leicester when the rails froze. 200 prisoners of war were used to clear snow and literally saved the lives of many stranded villagers. Courtesy of Leicester Mercury.

History of Arnesby 1851-1901

Profits of £210 from the sale of the booklet about Arnesby, have been given to the Arnesby Baptist Chapel Youth Club funds. The booklet is written by Mr R. Ingram in memory of Ada Rosalie Snutch who was born

in Arnesby in 1883 and lived there for the first 24 years of her life. If anyone would like to purchase a copy please contact me. If your family name is Snutch you may be interested in the results of some research into the family name Snutch. This is drawn from the 2011 and 2012 Electoral Rolls for the UK and lists 183 people. Of these about half live in Leicestershire including: Fleckney, Market Harborough, Wigston, Lutterworth, Glen Parva, Quorn, Kilby, and Countesthorpe. Contact me for a copy. PASTORAL TEAM FOR THE HEXAGON BENEFICE Caring for One Another: As some of you will know we are trying to form a Pastoral Team in the benefice. I have started a course at Husbands Bosworth with interested people. The hope is that by the time there is a new incumbent here, there will be a team of people prepared to work with the new vicar to provide care among church people, and in the community. Of course there is a lot of care already going on, and we don’t want to duplicate that. But we do need to look at areas which are not being covered at present, especially such things that in the past the vicar was expected to do, but which can now be shared with lay people (such as taking out Holy Communion to the house bound). The course continues 7:30-9:30pm in Husbands Bosworth church hall on Wednesday Feb 13th, 20th & 27th. In the mean time if you feel that you would like a pastoral visit yourself then contact me, and we will try to arrange for someone to call. Or if you know of someone who would appreciate a visit then let me know, but I must add that it is important that you ask them first before you contact me!

Lent: Lent is a period of 40 days, beginning on

Ash Wednesday, leading up to Easter. It may be

marked by fasting and devoting time to prayer and

reflection; or a time to sacrifice a particular food or

habit and use the money saved to donate to a charity. For

Christians it is a reminder of Jesus’ self-discipline and testing in

the wilderness for 40 days and a time to think about the events

leading up to his death on the cross. The colour traditionally

used in churches for drapes during Lent is purple, a colour asso-

ciated with mourning (thinking ahead to Jesus’ suffering on the

cross on Good Friday) and with royalty (Jesus’ resurrection on

Easter Day). Decorations and flowers are usually removed from

churches and churchyards during Lent. The word Lent was old

English for “lengthen”, since Lent occurs in spring when the days

start to get longer once again.

St Nicholas Church Carol Service: On Tue 18th Dec was an enjoyable event. The collec-tion of £70 was donated to LOROS. Thank you to the ladies who helped to decorate the church. Janet Skinner

Mr Alan DRIVER

We were very sorry to hear of Alan’s death. Alan was a good and well respected member of the community. He was treasurer of the Heritage Society and he

and his wife Christine always participated and helped in any activities arranged in the village. He will be sadly missed and our thoughts and prayers are with Christine and her family at this sad time.

Christmas Coffee Morning: On Sat 24th Nov in the village hall. Another most successful event, with breakfast baps and drinks, a range of stalls and tombola adding to the enjoy-ment. The event raised a massive £900 for church funds. Thanks to all involved, especially Ann Charles and Jill S t a n l e y w h o o r g a n i s e d t h e e v e n t . Carol Service: St Mary Magdalene Church was packed for the annual service on Sun 23rd Dec, led by John Raven and music by the Wigston Band. The collection of £200 ex-ceeded that of previous years and was sent to the local branch of The Salvation Army. Sherry, drinks and mince pies were provided by many helpers from the village. Carols Around the Christmas Tree: It was too risky to use a sound system for our accompanying music on Christmas Eve due to the wet conditions. However, this did not dampen the enthusiastic singing, helped by generous supplies of hot mulled wine! Many thanks to all who helped and the Com-munity Association who provided the refreshments. Arnesby Primary School Nativity: We were pleased to welcome the children from Arnesby School for their Christ-mas Nativity Play in church. They sang with enthusiasm and there were several talented soloists. The production was thorough ly en joyed by a l l who a t tended. Christmas Bring and Share: Many thanks to Brian Davis who organised this event with a sing-along on Wed 19th Dec in the village hall. Brian brought his keyboard and song sheets and food was provided by many helpers from the Benefice. A good number of people braved the appalling weather and a most enjoyable evening of song and laughter was had by all. Liz Austin

Mid-week service

A short service of Holy

Communion is held at All Saints, Husbands Bosworth on Wednesdays at 9:15am

Glory to you Lord, you know the challenges we

all face as we strive to do your will. As this new

month begins, and each day unfolds help me to

respond to the promptings of your Holy Spirit so that I can be a channel of your love.

Give me the strength and courage I need to

complete the work you have set before me. May I find joy in being united

with you in all things. Amen
