FEBRUARY 2017
Thank you John
It seems appropriate at this time to use this opportunity to say thank you to John Raven.
Some of you will know John well, better than I do, as he has been coming to the parishes of
the Hexagon Benefice over quite a number of years. He has come as a Reader to take
services in the churches here, but he has also come to support the churches’ efforts in fetes,
bazaars, Good Friday activities, concerts, harvest suppers and the like. And very often he
has not come alone, but with his wife Barbara or with his daughter and grandchildren. To
many of us he has become a familiar figure around our churches and to others a good
friend.
At the same time as serving and supporting our church communities here he has also
faithfully maintained his commitment to his home church of St James the Greater in
Leicester, serving there as Reader too, involved in all aspects of church life, working with
the youth and also leading their mission partnership with the other churches they are
teamed up with. John has remained busy.
Some of you will be aware that over the last couple of years John has been fighting a bat-
tle with cancer, a battle he seems to be holding his own with and doing well, but with that
and the arrival of an ‘0’ birthday John has decided it is time review what he is doing and
reduce some of his commitments. This means that John will no longer appear regularly to
take services within the Hexagon Benefice –instead he will just come a couple of times a
year to keep in touch with friends he has made here.
So thank you John for your time and love, your support and your service, for all your
ministry among us. It has been greatly valued by many people over the years and we are
truly grateful that you have shared your faith and offered your encouragement in so many
ways. We shall miss your presence among us and look forward to the times you come back
to visit. Our hope and prayer is that you and Barbara will enjoy good health for a long time
to come and enjoy the opportunity to maybe relax a little more with a less busy life (as well
as continuing to support The Tigers, of course). May God continue to bless and protect you
and all your family out of the abundance of his love, we give thanks to God for you each
time we think of you, and thanks also to the church of St James the Greater for sharing you
with us.
The peace of the Lord be always with you.
Liz

A Salvation Army captain was collecting at a local service station.
“I am sorry,” said a sad-looking middle-aged lady.
“I can’t give you anything, I’ve just lost my husband.”
Full of love and Christian compassion, the captain asked “And how long ago
since you lost him?”
With a quick look around she replied, “Well, about five minutes ago, I think he
must have gone to the toilets.”

I was attending my grandmother’s funeral; in London, with all the family as-
sembled.
We stood for the first hymn, and my uncle looked down to see blood running
along the back of the pew. In dismay he put his arm around my Aunt fearing
the worst: after all we were at a funeral. She looked around, gasped — and
felt in her pocket.
The top had come off her cough medicine

making people at home—when you wish they were at home.”

P.C.C. Meeting, Monday, 6th Feb. 7.pm. at the home of Mrs . Sheila Ball. The Carol Service was well attended, and because of your generosity, we were able to send £170. to Teenager Cancer Care Leicester Royal Infirmary. Throughout the year, donations amounting to £1,390. have been sent to: Cancer Research,Christian Aid, Lutterworth Food Bank, Sharpe Homeless, M.S.F. and the Alzheimer's Soc After several years of running Cafe Church, numbers have declined, and it has been decided to change to having a service in Church at 9.30am on the fourth Sunday of each month, and Cafe Church will cease. Services on the fourth Sunday will alternate with one month being Holy Communion using the currently approved ser-vice from Common Worship and the next month being a family style non - commun-ion service - both services will be with hymns. Grateful thanks go to all who have run and supported Cafe Church over the years - with catering, giving the message, doing the publicity and just being there - hope to see you all at the new services in Church Liz
