POTPOURRI

‘T APRIL, 1976

Have you been with us when we have a work night at the regular monthly meeting time? It's lots of fun, and we do get a lot

‘ of work done in spite of the talking, kidding, and gossiping as‘wescurry around and around the table assembling the quarterly, orcut out obituaries, and the 22—4h-66-88-YearAgo columns from the

;_weeklypaper to paste in notebooks. It is hard not to take time toread about those times. Comejoin us--we do need you!»

It has been called to myattention that available material of;interest to genealogists should be mentioned in this column fromtime-toTtime.4

"Notes and Queries" by Egle, which was purchased with thei'lBetty Crocker coupon moneyhas a number of volumes and is of value

to those seeking ancestors in Pennsylvania. The "Index for Old Kentucky Surveys and Grants", which was prepared by the Kentucky His

, etorical Society, contains names of manyVirginians and Kentuckians,'and gives the original book and page number, and the grantee and

grant date. "Index to the 1820 Federal Census of Kentucky," and;A"Index to the 1840 Federal Census of Indiana” are new additions in

our library. 'Material we have on hand and mentioned before include the

index to the 1880 Wilson Co., Kansas census (also the microfilmof the census from which the index was made). names of people indexed in the Wilson County Register of Deeds office if death date

. is given in deeds, a list of pioneer families in Wilson County, the City Directories listed in the back of each quarterly, micro

'films of the Neodesha Register (mostly a weekly paper) from 1883to l974, inclusive, somenewspaperclippings giving obituaries,

.and the wonderful book “Wilson County, Kansas Marriages 1864-1900”.This book gives additional information than that being run in thequarterly of the marriages. Morenames of parents are shown.

If your ancestors were truly Scotch-Irish, you are almost‘assured they have a Presbyterian connection. Presbyterians are a

tightly organized congregation. The congregations form Presbyteries,Presbyteries make up the Synods, and the whole head up to a GeneralAssembly. " ' . "~. The first General Assemblywas held in America.in 1789. There would not be much genealogicalinformation available throughaffiliation with this religion, probably. Lists of membersmight be kept indefinitely in some churches.Early minutes might be fruitful.

Copies from a book in the possession of Carl JohnsonThayer, Kansas, by Marilyn Barrett, of Winona, Kansas. Aswith any records of this nature copied by different peoplethere is a chance of error which we would regret, of course.Weare just grateful to have a chance to.pub1ish this materialwithout the necessity of personally researching the cemetery. These cover only the oldest graves according to myunderstanding. Somelots are shown as merely purchased and evidentlynever used.
