y young adult daughters love tomake fun of me and my awkward-ness when left to my own devices. Ihave always been behind the curve

when it comes to electronics. I like to think of it asbeing old-fashioned and traditional, but apparently Iam a techno-dinosaur. It all started with my first35mm camera. It was a Pentax K1000 and it waswonderfully simple. No bells or whistles, no auto-matic anything. It was a lens and film. That’s all. Oh,it did have shutter speeds. But nothing digital orcomputerized. I had to think about the light, theexposure and the composition. There was noPhotoshop back then. Any enhancement to a photocame in the darkroom with burning and dodgingunder the enlarger. The camera was a tool, the pho-tographer was the artist. The cameras of today havebecome the artist and the photographer a technician. And in fact, people hardly use cameras anymore. They are snapping photos with phones. Everythingwent digital a long time ago and point and shoot, selfies, and party pix have become the norm. Usedto be the photojournalist had to try to get to thescene in time to capture that one great photographand “capture the moment.” These days they are

scooped by everyone on the scene and their smartphones. It took me a while to get a smart phone. Ilagged behind everyone in my family and got alltheir hand-me-down cell phones for a while. Andthen I realized, I am a grampa now and I need thosepictures of my grandson. So they took me to thesmart phone store and got me the most basic smartphone available. They were sure I was not “smart”enough for the more advanced device. And I prettymuch proved them wrong. I have done quite wellwith my “introductory” phone. It takes photos and Ican get my emails and I even use it for phone callsonce in a while. I play Words With Friends andcheck my Facebook. I have to admit that Facebookis pretty neat. A great way to keep in touch with peo-ple without having to actually see or talk to them inperson. Not sure if it has made me more antisocial orif I was antisocial before I got the smart phone. Iknow I am still way behind the curve when it comesto personal hand held devices. But it takes sometime for me to make a change. I do get attached tomy devices. I still use outdated computer programs(which our magazine’s printer keeps reminding me).But like so many things in life. It’s hard to give upon something you know and become comfortablewith. Maybe it’s loyalty. Maybe it’s comfort. Ormaybe it’s just the laziness to learn something new.I feel like I have already given in to the modernworld of technology. The photo of me in this columnis a selfie, and the cover art I did in Photoshop. Soyou might say I have come a long way. Or have I?Technology changes faster than a chameleon in aCrayola factory. I do know how to text, although Ikeep calling it email. And never while I drive. Gottago, the dang thing is buzzing and dinging and I can’tget it out of my pants pocket...Can you hear me now? J.B. Lester

ove is not supposed to makeyou feel bad, rejected, unhappyor stressed out. Period. Stopselling yourself short.

HEALTHY LOVE PARTNERSupportive- supports your endeavors and wants tosee you grow as a person.Validating- your partner validatesyour feelings as logical (differentfrom always agreeing with them).Communicative-willing to talkthings out, even if hard at first, toresolve issues and move forward.Feelings of Well-Being – You feel secure, loved, happy and able to focus on you. Self-esteem- Your self-esteem has room to grow ina healthy relationship.Your Partner – he or she knows they want to bein a committed relationship and have no troubleclearly relaying this to you through words andactions.

UNHEALTHY LOVE PARTNERContinuously Unsupportive – offers no encour-agement or even resists most of your endeavors

towards personal growth and improvement, oftendriven by their insecurity.Non-Validating- your partner seems unable orunwilling to try to understand your feelings. Resists Communication - becomes defensive, dismissive or repeatedly states, “I don’t know” toseemly simple questions regarding his or her feel-ings.

Feelings of Anxiety/Stress - walking oneggshells (holding your feelings back),

exhausted from overly focusing on thestate of your relationship. Low Self-esteem- You feel rejected.

Your self-esteem is repeatedly chippedaway when you stay in something that is

unhealthy. Your Partner – he or she avoids the “commit-

ment issue”, never bringing up the future. The “Ilove you” statements are far and few between.Worse yet, they can’t seem to decide if you areeven the “right one” for them, but they want youaround anyway.

e are constantly exposed topotential infectious agentslike viruses and bacteriathat cause infections such

as colds, flu, bronchitis and ear infections. The immune system defends us frominvaders and repairs the damage that occurswith infections.

When the immune system is weak infectionsmay occur frequently and be difficult to resolve. There has been a resurgence of infections like per-tussis, emergence of antibiotic resistant superbugsand rising autoimmune diseases. Today it is verycommon for young children to have many ear infec-tions requiring repeated treatment with antibioticswhich alter the gut microbiome and further weakenthe immune system.

Parents often express concern that their child is“sick all the time” and have frequently been onmany courses of antibiotics. When I support theirimmune systems they no longer get sick and theyoften become “the healthiest one in the family.”

The good news is that there are effective naturaloptions to enhance your immune system and to nat-urally treat infections.

What can you do? Get plenty of Sleep: Adequate sleep is essen-

tial for a healthy immune system. Reduce Stress: High stress levels negatively

impact the immune system. Find time to breath, stretch, meditate and laugh! A balanced life isessential to optimal health.

Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables which are

rich in vitamins, phytonutrients and fiberthat support the immune system.Consider green smoothies or juicing.

Exercise regularly. If you drink alcohol, drink only in

moderation. Take steps to reduce your exposure

to infectious agents. Wash your handsfrequently and keep your hands awayfrom your face.

Take Probiotics to support the intestinal micro-biome. A healthy immune system begins with ahealthy gut.

Take Digestive enzymes which help to makenutrients easier to absorb.

Herbs like olive leaf, garlic, oregano oil, pau darco and ginseng provide anti-viral, anti-bacterialand anti-fungal benefits.

Vitamins and minerals including Vitamins C,D, B6, folic acid and Zinc are essential for healthyimmune function.

Phytonutrients and antioxidants boost theimmune system and can be taken as supplements orconsumed in a healthy diet.

Medicinal mushrooms like shiitake and reishivarieties have immune enhancing properties.

magine divinity, humanity, anddemons in a context of homeopa-thy, herbs, and drugs. What if I sayparasites are like demons?Parasites are deceptive, evil, wig-

gly, shadowy characters. They literally suckand drain your energy, hijack your mind, and takeover your will power. If we substitute the word “para-sites” with “demons”, you can look at the history ofmankind and medicine from quite a different perspec-tive.

Parasites are one of the major overlooked medicalproblems along with hidden dental problems. We mustask, “Why are people getting sicker with mysteriousillnesses? Why are they not responding to currentstandards of medical therapies?” Parasites are a lead-ing cause of morbidity and mortality on a global scale.Well over 4 billion people are infected with parasitesaccording to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control)and WHO (World Health Organization) based on thestandard stool and blood tests for parasites.

According to CDC, 1.6 billion people are infectedwith Ascaris with over 60,000 deaths/year, 200 mil-lion people are infected by Flukes and Schistosomeswith 20 million people dying from complicationsrelated to these parasites (Foundation of Parasitologyby Roberts and Janovy), and 250-659 million peopleare infected with malaria with 1-2 million of thesepeople dying every year. These statistics are based onthe standard stool test for ova and parasites. The realmagnitudes of the problems are much greater thanCDC and WHO estimated because they are relying onthe tests of stool and blood alone which I don’t believeto provide the total picture.

Ancient Romans failed, as reported in the Journalof Parasitology, to slow the spread of parasites despitethe introduction of public multi-seat toilets, hand-washing stations, sewage systems, and aqueducts forsafe drinking water, all of which were built two thou-sand years ago. Romans were fond of a fish saucecalled “garum.” This sauce was not cooked. Theydipped bread into it. It was traded across the RomanEmpire. And fish tapeworm eggs were widespread inEurope during the Roman Empire, according to paleo-parasitologist, Piers Mitchell at the University ofCambridge. Coincidence or connection?

My firsthand experience using prescribed parasitemedication came in the year 2001. I was deployed toBolivia for the U.S. Army as a Reserve medical offi-cer. We had a small medical, dental, and veterinaryteam. Our medical team extensively used the cheapestparasite medications provided by the U.S. Army forabout 10,000 Bolivian native Indians. Those medi-cines were pyrantel pamoate and mebendazol. I wroteabout my experience in Bolivia in my book,Accidental Cure.

Before Bolivia in 2001, I used homeopathic andnatural parasite remedies with moderate success basedon Acupuncture Meridian Assessment (AMA). I waswell aware of hidden parasite problems. When I start-ed using prescribed parasite medications from myexperiences in Bolivia, there were dramatic responsesthat I never expected were possible.

When I was treating my patients with IBS(Irritable Bowel Syndrome)-like intestinal symptoms, which were detected based on disturbances on thelarge intestine meridian, some of my patients told me,not only did their IBS symptoms get better but alsotheir asthma disappeared, eczema or psoriasis gotresolved, recurrent pneumonia did not return, chronicfatigue and fibromyalgia got better, anxiety/depres-sion improved, fever of unknown origin went away, migraine headache resolved for the first time in manyyears, brain lesions disappeared on MRIs on MS(Multiple Sclerosis) patients, sometimes tumorsshrank, and so many other medical conditionsimproved. This information was not taught in mymedical school or Internal Medicine training. TheLarge Intestine meridian is paired with the Lungmeridian and the paired circuitry of the Stomach andSpleen meridian.

I was not treating these conditions but justtreating for parasites based on the disturbanceof the large intestine meridian. I was treatingwith parasite medications based on 30 years ofmedical practice and my U.S. Army militaryexperience in Bolivia.

Parasites are so pervasive and yet so diffi-cult to detect by our modern medical science.

I have written many articles about parasites. It is notwise to rely exclusively on the standard stool test orblood test to detect parasites. We need to embrace andunderstand the concepts of subtle Energy Fields,Matrix, Prana, and Meridians that have been describedin ancient civilizations.

Recently, I read, the Process of Healing by H. VanGelder, DO, ND. He is a Dutchman, born inIndonesia, grew up in Asia, worked in India, and edu-cated in Australia and England. He became a medicalmystic and wrote in this book that homeopathy hadbeen known for thousands of years in India accordingto the ancient Indian science of Ayur Veda. The storygoes, Pythagoras, an Ionian Greek philosopher wentto India and studied Ayur Veda. Paracelsus, anothermystical scientist of the Middle Ages, experimentedbased on the manuscripts of Pythagoras. SamuelHahnemann based his theory of Homeopathy on thebooks of Paracelsus.

If Van Gelder’s writing is correct, the ancientIndian Ayur Veda might be the great grandfather ofmodern Homeopathy. According to Van Gelder, theAyur Veda mentions three types of medicine for heal-ing:

1. Divine – Homeopathy2. Human – Herbs3. Demonic – DrugsDrugs are only reserved for demonic (“parasites”

is my interpretation). I have tried homeopathic andnatural herbal parasite remedies with moderate suc-cess. But when I used correct combinations of pre-scribed parasite medications in the right sequence (inconjunction with resolving hidden dental problems),there were dramatic responses to many unexpectedmedical conditions that seemed impossible to cure. Iam convinced that deeply imbedded parasites willmanifest into many faces of demonic expression ofacute and chronic illnesses. Parasite medications, unlike antibiotics, are not covering the symptoms andsuppressing the conditions.

I am against using medications to cover up symp-toms, as promoted by pharmaceutical companies. However, I am convinced that parasite medicationshave been underutilized because parasites are decep-tive, shadowy, and demonic. Q: Since February is Heart Health Month, what supplements can I take to help protect myheart?

A: Cardivoscular disease is a huge problem inthis country. You are very smart to think about pro-tecting your heart and prevention rather than wait-ing until the unthinkable happens. Of course, exer-cise and diet play a very important role in prevent-ing heart disease. By adding a variety of supple-ments to support your heart health, you can do quitea bit to help keep your heart healthy.

Coenzyme Q10 or Co10 is very important inprotecting your heart. CoQ10 is a naturally occur-ring nutrient found in virtually every cell in thehuman body. You can also find it in foods such asbeef, chicken, pork, sardines, anchovies, mackerel, salmon, broccoli, spinach and nuts. It assists inenergy production (ATP) at the cellular level andalso functions as a fat-soluble antioxidant inhibitingoxidation of fats in cell membranes. It also guardsthe body from free radical stress. When CoQ10 lev-els are low, it has been found that is when heartattacks occur. Research has been shown that thereis a strong correlation between the severity of heartfailure and low blood and tissue levels of CoQ10.So, since the heart requires the highest amount ofATP activity to support its constant aerobic func-tion, sufficient amounts of CoQ10 are essential fora healthy heart and critical for a failing heart.

Hawthorn Berries help improve the tone of thecardiac muscle, improves oxygen uptake by theheart, improves circulation and energizes the heart

cells. This is an excellent choice to help build up theheart muscle.

Vitamin E is recommended for heart health. Itmay help delay heart disease by preventing the for-mation of blood clots. Keep in mind that there aredifferent forms of Vitamin E and it is recommend-ed that you take a mix of tocopherols andtocotrienols for the best results. Also look for the d-alpha form of E, not dl-alpha. It is important tokeep in mind that Vitamin E is a blood thinner so ifyou are on blood thinning medications, consult withyour doctor first.

B vitamins are helpful in lowering homocys-teine levels and B6 may help prevent hardening ofthe arteries.

Magnesium seems to affect the muscle tone ofthe blood vessels and improves the balance of fatsin the blood.

Garlic, L-Arginine and Omega 3's are alsovery effective in keeping the heart healthy.

ebruary is National HeartHealth month. I wouldlike to share a heart health

story with you. This is the storyof Tom.

Tom initially came to see usbecause he was concerned abouthis weight. His goals were to“lose weight” and “stop heart dis-ease before it starts.” While wetoo were concerned about hisweight, after our consultation andexamination, we suspected that hemay already have heart disease.

Clinical experience has shownus that when people are overweight, there are often underlying healthproblems. Research indicates thatpeople who are overweight are atincreased risk of heart disease. Hisblood work revealed that his cho-lesterol numbers were not good, hisinflammatory markers for heart dis-ease were high, and his vitamin Dlevel was very low. All of these markersincrease the risk of heart disease. In short,Tom’s numbers revealed that he was literally aheart attack waiting to happen and he did noteven know it.

Like we do with every patient, we presentedTom with the information. We listed his optionsand we let him decide what he wanted to do.Tom decided that he wanted to take control ofhis health and, if possible, he wanted to do it

naturally with no medications. We employed several tools to

combat his condition. We advisedhim to consume a Paleolithic stylediet. He also took some very spe-cific targeted oral nutrition aimedto help his body heal itself, and hecontinued his exercise regimen oflifting weights several days perweek.

At his 3-month follow-up visit, his blood labs revealed that histotal cholesterol dropped 33 points

(19% decrease), his triglyceridesdropped 74 points (43% decrease),his LDL cholesterol dropped 25points (43% decrease), and his vita-min D improved 30 points (136%increase). And by the way, he lost40 pounds.

Not only did Tom’s lab valuesimprove drastically, he reported hav-ing more energy, getting bettersleep, and having an increase in hisoverall sense of well-being. Helooked like a brand new man and

everyone noticed it.All of this happened in 90 days. As I have

stated in previous articles, one step can changethe entire course of your life. I am pretty surethat Tom, like all of our patients, would agree.

If you are interested in taking control of yourhealth and making sure you live your best lifepossible give us a call at 314-293-8123 or visitwww.theinstituteofnaturalhealth.com.

ebruary is American Heart Month, andsince heart disease is the number onecause of death for women, it’s important

to employ strategies now to help prevent it. Simplelifestyle changes, along with getting your numbers checked, can help you stay on top of your heart health.

We know that ninety percent of women have a least onerisk factor for heart disease, but only one in five womenactually considers heart disease the biggest threat to herhealth. What makes this topic even more complex is that thesigns and symptoms of heart disease can often be a bit dif-ferent for women than they typically are for men.

Heart disease results from atherosclerosis, which is abuildup of plaque inside your artery walls. Atherosclerosisis a process that occurs over time, but there are ways to pre-vent it now.

Tips for Heart Health*Be sure to get at least sixty minutes of moderate-intensi-

ty physical activity each day. *Avoid tobacco.*Cut back on heart-damaging saturated fats that are found

in animals products such as full-fat dairy, fatty cuts of meat, fried foods, convenience foods and fast foods.

*Incorporate more heart-friendly unsaturated fats, partic-ularly omega-3 fats found in fatty fish, nuts and seeds.

*Select foods that are low-sodium or no salt added.*Use more herbs, spices, aromatic vegetables, vinegars,

& citrus juices to flavor food instead of salt or butter.*Consume more vegetables and fruits. *Ask about your family history of heart disease or risk

factors for heart disease.*Lose weight if you are overweight or obese. For most

individuals (excluding some athletes), aim for a healthybody mass index (BMI).

Know Your Numbers *Keep your blood sugar under control. A normal

fasting blood glucose level is 70-110 mg/dL. *Keep your blood pressure controlled – normal

blood pressure is 120/80 mm/Hg or lower. *Control your cholesterol. A healthy blood choles-

terol level is less than 200 mg/dL. More importantly, aim for an HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) of 60

mg/dL or higher. *Get to a healthy weight and maintain it – a normal,

healthy BMI is 18.5-24.9. *Monitor triglycerides – a normal level is 150 mg/dL or

less, with optimal level less than 100 mg/dL.Warning Signs of a Heart Attack1. Pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in middle of chest

lasting more than a few minutes, or goes away and returns.2. Pain or discomfort in one or both of your arms, your

back, neck, jaw or abdomen.3. Feeling short of breath, with/without chest discomfort.4. Suddenly breaking out in a cold sweat or feeling nau-

seous or lightheaded.5. While both men and women experience the most com-

mon heart attack symptom--chest pain or discomfort--women may be more likely than men to experience some ofthe other common symptoms, especially shortness ofbreath, nausea, vomiting or pain in the back, neck, or jaw.

Many low-income individuals are at an increased risk forheart disease, obesity and type 2 diabetes caused by poordietary choices. ou’ve probably seen people practic-ing T’ai Chi on TV, in a movie, oreven locally, in a park or at thebotanical garden. You know it’s a

slow moving, graceful exercise that is supposed tobe beneficial. You may haveheard that at advanced levels itis a formidable martial art basedon relaxation, yielding, andusing an opponent’s energyagainst himself. But what doyou really know about the manyhealth benefits that can begained from this wonderful, relaxing exercise system?

T’ai Chi, when practiced regularly, has beensaid to improve relaxation, concentration, coordi-nation, flexibility, postural alignment, and bothphysical and mental balance or centering. If someor all of this sounds intriguing to you, then we’dlike to introduce you to the St. Louis T’ai ChiCh’uan Association, a not-for-profit organizationhas been offering classes in the art of T’ai ChiCh’uan since 1979.

“The five principles we practice are: relax andsink, separate the weight, waist as commander, body upright and beautiful lady’s wrist, ” saidMichael David, President of the Association. Mr.David has practiced the Yang Style Short Form, astaught by the Association for nearly twenty years. And like most of the Association’s students, T’aiChi Ch’uan has changed his life in countless ways.Mr. David experienced a more relaxed manner atwork, increased health and vitality, plus improvedbalance and strength. David adds, “These benefits

come subtly, like laying a sheet of paper on top ofa sheet of paper. Over time, you find the way yousit, stand and move tends to change. You gainstrength, balance, suppleness, stamina, and mostof all, a more meditative approach to daily living.”

For centuries, T’ai Chi Ch’uan was kept aclosely-guarded family secret in China. But today,

anyone with a sincere interest canlearn the basics of the Form. Withdedicated practice, some, if notall of the above benefits can berealized –something of value forthe remainder of any student’slife.

The Yang Style Short Formtaught at the Association was

condensed (mostly by eliminating repetitions)from the Long Form by Professor Cheng Man-Ch’ing, a supremely gifted master of T’ai ChiCh’uan, painting, calligraphy, medicine and poet-ry. Benjamin Lo, one of the Professor’s senior stu-dents, has taught all of the Association’s currentinstructors. Now in his eighties, Mr. Lo still hasstrength, sensitivity and suppleness that must befelt to be believed.

Yang Style T’ai Chi is characterized by slow, rhythmic movements of the body. The Form canbe practiced at any age, requires no special equip-ment beyond comfortable, loose clothing and flat,thin-soled shoes. Once learned, the Form takesabout eight minutes to practice.

To learn more about T’ai Chi Ch’uan, call314-961-1355 or please visit the web site atwww.taichistlouis.org

ou look at a map to reach adestination, so why don’tyou look at your personalhealth map? It’s your

FACE! As an office of acupuncture, chiropractic and naturopathy, we eval-uate the face with a branch of TCM(Traditional Chinese Medicine) calledMien Shiang or FACE READING.

Your face can tell you what supplements youshould take, what foods to stay away from, whyyour back or neck may be hurting and howstressed you really are. In our hour long evalu-ation, we prioritize your concerns to create a“Get Vibrant Energy & Health Now” health planfor the next year. This will help focus your time, money and energy on correcting the cause ofyour problems.

Mien Shiang or face reading has been donefor thousands of years with amazing results inChina and the orient. Not only can Face Readingassist you in treating your health problems morenaturally, but it can hint at personality traits.

Go find a mirror and look at your face rightnow! Each part of your face relates to an area ofthe body. Darker colors, acne or bumps meanthe organ needs to be cleaned or detoxed. Whitercoloring or wrinkles or saggy skin may meanthe corresponding organ is weak and needs sup-port from natural treatments, diet and lifestylechanges to heal.

Forehead: This is the colon area. Wrinkles, lines and bumps could indicate dehydration or

the need for probiotics. Puffy eyelids: This is the gallbladder

area. Puffiness may indicate gall conges-tion (or liver if your gallbladder wasremoved). a rt i s a lla bout Lo VE!

few years ago, I visited Le Musee desBeaux Arts in Montreal. The LOVEsculpture by American artist Robert

Indiana, 1964, outside the museum entrancemade me smile. It’s an iconic image, seen every-where when it wascreated, a statementof its era. In a timeof love-ins and“make love, notwar” slogans,Indiana presentedthe very word itselfto be art.

And isn’t thatwhat art is about?Love. How can artbe without pas-sion? Can art existwithout evokingemotion from thosewho view it, hearit, experience it?Art is love---notalways beautiful, but always full of heart. Artists do what theylove (create art!) and share it with the public(who, hopefully, love it as well).

With that starting premise, I thoughtFebruary – with Valentine’s Day right in themiddle of the month—is the perfect time toexperience art that comes from the heart. Whatbetter way to experience art than through theperforming arts!

Mustard Seed Theatre presentsEllemosynary by Lee Blessing, February 5-21,at Fontbonne University Fine Arts Theatre, 6800Wydown. The play examines the subtle but per-ilous, funny yet poignant relationship between ayoung girl, her mother and her grandmother.

Metro Theatre Company offers a main stageperformance in the Lee Auditorium at MissouriHistory Museum, February 12-28. BeforeMuhammad Ali became one of the greatestheavyweights in the history of boxing, before hesaid “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee,” hewas Cassius Clay, Jr. in racially segregated JimCrow Louisville, Kentucky. “a nd in t hisCorner….Cassius Clay” is a play by award-winning playwright Idris Goodwin, centered onthis early time in the boxer’s life. The story of ayoung man who believes he has unlimitedpotential, while facing segregation and racism, remains impactful today. With the help of hisboxing coach (a white police officer) Cassiusfollows his dreams. The play demonstrates thatthe good of the community surpasses personalsuccess as Cassius learns to use his gifts inunexpected ways. The play premiered last yearin the boxer’s hometown of Louisville. St. Louis

is only the second city to present the drama. But don’t expect the performance to be

“staged.” Famed fight choreographer DrewFacher has traveled to St. Louis weekly to workwith starring actor Trigney Morgan. Trigney andcast members learned fight choreography andendured boxing training with Drew and with St.Louis All-City Boxing to give audiences a trulyrealistic performance. Black socksThey never get dirtyThe longer you wear themThe blacker they getSome dayI think I will wash themBut something inside meIs saying “Not yet!”

It’s true I don’t wash “sox” every time Iwear them, but not because they are all black.I do conserve energy and water – and usemild laundry products – all of which areGREEN commitments. Yay for me!

But here’s my little guilty secret: I don’tneed to wash often due to having multipledozens of sox styles to choose from.

Many women collect things: Handbags,Jewelry, Husbands, Shoes. In another era, itwas Hats women loved to have many of, andsacrificed to get a new one. I acquire vividinsulating footwear.

Among those who know me well, mySock Drawer is a legend: super organized, bycolor.

This in contrast to every other kind ofspace I occupy (at home, at work) where Imanage stuff of all kinds, simply, in Piles. Ijoke about it, claiming I’m Descended fromMound Builders. And I take refuge, profes-sionally, in sharing my milieu of employment(the Missouri Botanical Garden) with certainBotanists whose offices are amazingly morechaotic than mine. Hah! Reputation saved byscience!

But in my Sock Drawer, order reigns.Sort of. That legend, like me, is aging.

Truth be known, it’s pretty jammed up inthere these days. Because I scout for coolpairs without de-acquisitioning, that drawer isway the heftiest of the six in my dresser.Blacks are crowding out the Blues. MySmartWool Striped Sox (wear like iron!) inpride of place at drawer front, are puttin’ thesqueeze even on my Oranges/Reds and Greenones.

I can pull out a pair to match any color andpattern combination in an outfit, for warmand cold weather, subtle or loud, for holidaysor general use. And I do, and I proudly sportthem in business, creative or casual settings.I y Interesting Socks!

But what to do when my socks get outdat-

ed, infrequently as this occurs?Back in 2005, I coveted (and bought) the

book Stupid Sock Creatures, by an artsyyoung guy named John Murphy. This lavish-ly illustrated cartoony DIY printed paradisepromoted “making quirky, lovable figuresfrom cast-off socks.” I combed through myhistorical pairs (and my husband’s semi-kaputsocks) and rounded up sacks of Sock Monsterpotentials. What an opportunity!

I yearned to make stupid characters. Backthen, I wanted to make Sock Monsters sobadly I could barely sleep. Certainly I wasn’tlacking Monster Material. I was so excited, Ishowed off the book at work, where myGreen Building colleague Emily borrowed itand promptly created two darling recycled-knit novelties for her little nephew.

But my brain doesn’t work as a Monster-Maker. Despite a mental desire, I wasn’tmotivated to actually whack into my collec-tion and try my hand at whipping up toe-headed creatures. Crafty is just not how Ifunction. My longings are at odds with myability to imagine an outcome, and do it.

So my fabulous cache of stretched-outcollege Knee Socks, unbelievably uncomfort-able 1980s Toe Socks, too-scratchy WoolSocks and lovely holey Ankle Socks remainsdown in the basement of my home (and psy-che), in faint hopes that a clever reuse daywill dawn, for my sock stash and for me.

Meanwhile, from that famous bulgingdrawer, exactly the right pair steps out tocomplement whatever I wear. Tiny sun-col-ored flowers, perfectly matching that newscarf? They’re in there. Faire Isle in exactlythe hues of a favorite sweater? Check.Summer-weight watermelon motif? Yummy!Cat heads with rainbow eyes? Bluebirds ofHappiness? Cardinals perched on pineboughs? Glittering spiderwebs? Smileyfaces? Tie-dyed? Argyle? Neon green recy-cling symbols?

Sorry, world of monsters, I have not gotthe gumption to embody your soles.

But any attire will meet its perfect matchin my Sock Drawer. Anytime. Neatly.

ardens are full of wonder year round. Inwinter gardens speak to us in a whisperinstead of a shout. Winter gardens are more

like a meditation than a celebration.During the growing season we cele-brate the riot of flowers, foliage andfruit. It is during the quiet of thewinter when we have to attune oursenses to the subtlety of a garden’swonder.

Most plants have retreatedunderground in winter, their rootsholding the life that will emerge inspring. It is those with woody stemsand trunks that are now left bare toshow their power and beauty. Treesstand tall, their bare branches likearms and fingers reaching in prayerto the heavens. Their outstretchedlimbs receive energies of the sky, transporting them deep into the earth. Their outer mostbranches sway like pencils standing in silhouetteagainst the changing sky, writing the poetry of nature asthe wind guides their strokes.

Most plant colors are muted in winter. They aresoft, full of tans, browns with occasional shots of ever-greens and bright berries. Evergreens hold the promiseof a returning green spring and stand in contrast to theother hues. The tans of winter grasses and foliage cre-ate a simple melody of colors when seen against green.Berries of winter are spots of color that stand out asbright red dots or have to be sought out to see their soft-er colors.

When snow arrives highlighting the outlines of theabove ground garden life, a whole new world of won-der appears. Softly falling snow is like flowers fallingfrom the sky. Even ice, with its crystal dangers, createsan ice palace of nature when the sun appears and the

trees, shrubs and plants glitter. Agarden is never plants alone, it is acommunity of life. Birds that staythrough the cold months are part ofa garden’s life. Like the colors ofwinter plants, birds are a movingpalette of colors with bright red, browns, blacks and more.

Providing food in feeders andplants that have gone to seed helpskeep birds alive in winter’s cold. One of the most life filled gardensare those that leave the stems, flower seed heads and otherfoliage around in winter. A nativegarden with many different kindsof plants provides seeds for birds in

winter and in warmer months attracts those insects thatwill not only pollinate the plants but provide food forbirds as they feed their young.

The challenge of winter gardens is that we oftenstay indoors. We miss seeing, and being in, the wonderof a winter garden. Bundle up and enjoy this winter’s-gardens.

eekeeping is an interesting hobby withsweet rewards! The world that bees cre-ate inside their hive is largely self-suffi-cient, requiring monitoring more than

intervention. The infrastructure and hierarchy theycreate is a breathtaking creation requiring not muchmore time and effort than a garden. Colonies willforage up to 8,000 acres, so the entire community ishelping to feed your bees.

Honey is delicious! Honey is the source of hun-dreds of years of homeopathic remedies and at theheart of thousands of delicious recipes. Honey is theultimate prize of beekeeping. A single hive can pro-duce up to 100 pounds of honey in a year and at $7per pound, it keeps getting sweeter.

Backyard beekeeping is great for the bees! Just

like crops, diversity is one of the keys to maintain-ing healthy colonies and aiding the conservationeffort of the honeybee.

Our food sources depend on it! Berries, apples, almonds & cucumbers are just a few of the deliciousfoods that are pollinated by bees. With bees dyingoff in large numbers, backyard beekeepers are nec-essary to bring back the populations and keep ourplates filled with food.

BEE PREPARED!Eastern Missouri Beekeepers Association9th Annual Beekeeping WorkshopSaturday, February 6th, 20168:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.at Maritz in Fenton, MissouriSpend an entire day learning about bees & bee-

keeping. There are 2 courses offered at the work-

shop, the Beginners Beekeeping Course is intendedfor novice beekeepers and those with no prior bee-keeping experience. The instructors will cover allthe basics and prepare students to start beekeepingin 2016. The Advanced Course is for experiencedbeekeepers and will place special emphasis oncolony health and behavior. EMBA recruits nation-ally renowned honeybee scientists, professors, andbeekeepers to train attendees on current best prac-tices and share cutting-edge research.

Your learning will not end the day of the work-shop, EMBA has an entire year of hands-on work-shops that get beginners out in their teaching apiarywith experienced beekeepers. As club members, there are opportunities to participate in co-op pur-chasing of equipment and bees from reliable suppli-ers. You can sign up to have a mentor that will work

with you throughout your first year of beekeeping toanswer questions as they arise.

What is the Eastern Missouri BeekeepersAssociation? Founded in 1939, EMBA is the largestbeekeeping club in the St. Louis area. It is com-posed of a 100% volunteer core of highly dedicatedindividuals who are passionate about promotingbeekeeping and training the next generation of back-yard beekeepers. EMBA hosts monthly meetingsthat offer networking opportunities, Q&A, and high-quality presentations about topics ranging from howto do a hive inspection to how to make lip balm withyour beeswax. Members range from experiencedbeekeepers with 30+ years of experience to “new-bees” who are just figuring it out.

s farmers, this time of year forus is magical. We sow the firstseeds of the season in anticipa-tion of longer days and warmer

temperatures. For nearly the past decade, wehave spent Valentine’s Day showing our seedssome love. It has become a lovely tradition. Seedssown now in the high tunnel include celery, herbs, pep-pers, eggplant, cabbage, onions, broccoli, Napa cab-bage, lettuce, spinach, and even tomatoes.

We start some things on heat mats and keep thetemperature in high tunnel regulated to 50 degreesovernight. The sun significantly warms the soil and theplants during the day. At home, use seedling trays oregg cartons and build a shelf in a south facing window.Be sure to label seeds and water daily. Think in termsof the end product; something that grows as a single

head should be grown in a single cell with 1 or2 seeds. Something that will grow nicelytogether such as kale will thrive with 3 or 4seeds. Outdoors, once the ground has thawed, start sowing carrots, peas, lettuce, kale, spinach and other hardy greens. Plant theseaccording to package specifications. Be sure tokeep your garden beds weeded and watered.

We plant new seeds every week from Valentine’sDay through Memorial Day to ensure a nice succes-sion of crops. There is something very rejuvenatingabout sowing the first seeds of the season. The satis-faction of knowing that you will be providing yourselfand your loved ones with fresh homegrown produce isdelightful. Happy planting!

y February, many of us are wellinto our 2016 resolutions - often toget fit andeat health-

ier. In efforts to curbsugar and carbs and toramp up proteinintake, we check foodlabels at the grocerystore and opt fororganic and non-GMOproduce. For many ofus, our food choicesmay also have moralties to working condi-tions or environmentalimpacts.

But even for the ethical and health-con-scious consumer, it’s difficult to know whereour food comes from and the ecological foot-print of its production. Nowhere is this ambi-guity more apparent than in meat production.Even as farmer’s markets and “Think Global,Act Local” bumper stickers are increasinglycommon, industrialized animal agriculture con-tinues to explode in Missouri and throughoutthe US with consequences for environmental, animal, and human health.

The concentration of livestock in energy-intensive, confined factories is a catastrophicenvironmental and public health problem.Missouri is one of the top ten poultry and porkfactory farming states in the country. These fac-tories are run by absentee corporate investorsattacking Missouri’s rural economy. Pollutedair and water surrounding the operations notonly harms our rivers, streams, and air quality,

but threaten public health and create resistantsuperbug viruses from the antibiotics pumpedinto the livestock.

At MCE, we care about the environmentalimpacts of these corporate megafarms onMissouri’s water, land, and air. As consumers,we all care about our family and personalhealth. As advocates, we want to know we’resupporting the farmers who are stewards oftheir land and who protect our naturalresources. Factory farming has no place in anethical and sustainable food system.

Consumers have the perfect opportunity tosupport Missouri farmers by buying meat pro-duced by environmentally responsible, inde-pendent producers. There are numerousresources in St. Louis to find locally raised,

non-factory farmed meat. LocalHarvest in Tower Grove and CityGreens in the Central West End supplyfamily farmed meats from PatchworkFarms, a program of the MissouriRural Crisis Center. Bolyards inMaplewood is another great resourcesupplying locally raised meat.

Incorporate plant-based or sustain-able alternatives to factory farmedmeat as part of your New Year’s healthcommitments.

e are just getting a taste ofwinter weather, albeit withlittle snow, but more than

enough frigid cold. What are our petconcerns this time of year? Manyshould be obvious, but nonetheless, wewill review them for our reading audi-ence.

Cold can be threatening, but wet cold and windare really the culprits of concern. Obviously, thebest protection for your pets is to keep them insideyour home, the basement, or even the garage. Yet,even these protected areas may not be enough.Provide insulating materials for floor coverings, orin some cases you might consider hanging a heatlight or radiant heater. I know they are available atmost hardware stores or at your local GraingerStore. For pets obligated to an outside dog house,be sure to insulate the walls, floor and ceiling.Straw floors can be useful, but need to be cleanedregularly to avoid pet exposure to collecting fecesor urine.

Pet clothing is a significant industry these days.I believe there is real value in considering somesort of pet apparel that not only spruces his/herlooks, but keeps their core body temperature in aproper range. Remember that ears, muzzles & lips, and certainly, feet are all going to be inordinatelyexposed to the elements. You may need to protectthose areas with coverings, or at least with regularcleaning and care as well. Ice and snow can packup between the toes and pads of the feet, creating

damage or even frostbite. Ears are par-ticularly vulnerable to this condition. Itis basically, a freezer burn to the tissuethat may result in a full tissue slough, ifyou are not careful.

Another big concern in wintertimeregards all the chemicals and otherproducts available to your pets, espe-cially for pets who are being housed inbasements and garages. Lock up fertil-

izers, bug sprays and the like. Be sure the cabinetsand storage boxes are secure. Whatever is safe foryour kids is good policy to employ for your pets.Electric cords for heaters and such, need to besecured away from your exploring pets, as they canbite straight away and either get an electric burn, oreven electrocution. And, we always discuss theconcerns of anti-freeze, or ethylene glycol, whichmost of us use in our winter radiators. The problemis that this chemical is sweet tasting and thereby,an attractant for pets. The poisoning by anti-freezeis dose and time dependent. If you have any incli-nation of a poisoning or exposure, please take yourpet to the vet or to an emergency facility immedi-ately.

One last note concerns cats. They are amazing-ly capable at protecting themselves in the height ofwinter and usually do just fine. Nonetheless, Iencourage all cat owners to follow all the concernsand suggestions presented herein. Cats like to hideup in the car engine where they find adequate heat.I can tell you that nary a winter season goes bywithout cats being injured or killed when theirowners unknowingly start the engine as they leavefor work. Please be careful and mindful of bothyour cats and your dogs, and consciously imple-ment good cautionary practices on their behalf.

Enjoy the beauty and serenity of winter time.Just do it carefully!!

f you have a cat that is cough-ing or wheezing, your cat mayhave asthma. The preferredmedical term is feline allergic

bronchitis. It is a syndrome ofreversible airway inflammation andnarrowing. Asthma is often triggeredby inhaled allergens. Sometimes theallergens can be identified. Often, they are not. Pollen allergies are sus-pected in cases with a history of seasonality. Moldspores can cause direct trauma to respiratory tis-sues. It is particularly hard to control these reac-tions. Tobacco smoke is also a common cause ofasthma in our cats that share a home with a smoker.Asthma can also be caused by air pollution, ozone, and air-deodorizing devices. Some of these devicesgenerate ozone which may aggravate asthma inhuman patients and perhaps in kitty cats as well.Other culprits involved may be out-gassing noxiouschemicals from building materials and new carpet-ing. Common household items such as perfumes, scented candles, incense, deodorizing sprays, fabricsofteners, and aromatic oils can act as triggers forasthma in some of our feline patients. Adversereactions to food can lead to allergic bronchitis.

Young and middle-age cats are most oftenaffected by asthma. You may notice coughing, wheezing, and respiratory distress. The symptomsare episodic and can be brought on by exercise orstress. Your pet will act normal between episodes.Asthma is diagnosed based upon clinical history, physical exam, and thoracic radiographs.Transtracheal washes or bronchoalveolar lavagesmay be performed to confirm the diagnosis. Thesetests can check for underlying infectious causes ofasthma. Cats suspected of having asthma should bechecked for heartworm disease and should have astool sample checked for lungworm. These two dis-eases can mimic the symptoms of asthma.

If your cat is in extreme respiratory distress, emergency treatment is required at a critical carefacility. Your cat will need oxygen therapy provid-ed by an oxygen cage. Steroids will be given IV todecrease inflammation in the airways and bron-chodilators will be given to open the airways. Mostfeline asthma patients will respond to long termmanagement. We stress eliminating or reducing

exposure to inhaled irritants and poten-tial allergens. Clay litters can bereplaced with low dust clumping litterthat is non-scented. We encourage nosmoking in the household. Minimizeexposure to aerosols, powders, per-fumes, candles, incense, and fra-grances. Replacing air filters frequent-ly can help.

Steroids are often needed for longterm control of asthma symptoms.Prednisolone is given initially in an oral

form to decrease inflammation in the lungs. Whenused long term this drug can have adverse effects onthe body and predispose your cat to diabetes andobesity. Therefore, we often advise using Floventwhich is an inhaled corticosteroid. It is much safersince it delivers the steroid directly to the lungswhere it is needed. It is extremely effective in con-trolling the disease and does not have adverseeffects. Most cats will readily adapt to havingFlovent delivered thru the Aero Kat mask.

Food allergens are increasingly recognized as afactor in humans with allergies. I believe this to betrue for cats as well. Feeding your cat a hypoaller-genic diet or limited diet may reduce antigenic stim-ulation and improve asthma symptoms. Holistictherapies can benefit our asthmatic felines.Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA taken daily mayreduce immune-mediated inflammation in thelungs. Antioxidants may help as well. Antioxidant“defense” mechanisms appear to be compromisedin human asthma patients. Antioxidant supplemen-tation with Vitamin E, Vitamin C, and Selenium issafe and may have benefit. Human asthmatics havedecreased levels of Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) whichis considered to have natural antihistamine effects.Vitamin B6 supplementation in clinical trials helpedreduce levels of required medication and decreasedthe frequency of asthmatic episodes. Quercetin, aflavenoid, has potent antioxidant properties andinhibits cells from releasing histamines. It has beenshown to improve compromised breathing in asth-matic patients.

Integrative therapies can work well with med-ications such as Flovent to manage asthma in ourfeline patients. Holistic therapies can improveimmune health of these cats and will allow us to usea decreased dose of pharmacologic agents. A holis-tic approach including diet, antioxidants and fish oilwill help to decrease local cellular inflammation, balance immune response, and encourage toxinelimination via the respiratory system. Asthma can-not be cured but the disease can be successfullymanaged. The prognosis is good for most cats.

f you are looking to find fun ways to build astronger bond between you and your dog, then learning the FitPAWS® way could be

just the ticket! FitPAWS® is a successful condi-tioning program designed by veterinarians, physi-cal therapists, and trainers that relies upon in-depth communication between the MasterTrainer™, the dog handler, and of course the dog.

Canine total health focuses on mental stimulation, balance, flexibility, strength, and cardio fitness. Eachplays a varying role throughout the many stages of thefitness program. Not only will the conditioning exer-cises help the physical components of dogs, they alsobring about behavior modification, helping dogs live ahealthier, longer life.

FitPAWS has developed canine conditioning, fitnessand performance tools and techniques for dogs of allabilities, life stages, and jobs. Their program model isbased upon scientific research from canine and otheranimal species including horses, as well as quadrupedrobotic research. They utilize new technology anduniquely designed equipment to accelerate the traininggoal with novel approaches, while increasing the funindex. Some of the tools include paw pods, balancingdisc, K9FITbone™, wobble board, donuts, peanuts, rocker boards, agility cones and hurdles.

Each tool will be introduced at just the right time forthe dog’s safe and successful progression. A goal-ori-ented exercise program with frequent fine-tuned assess-ments by a Master Trainer ensure deeper development

and improved outcomes for participatingdogs and their handlers. The CanineFitPAWS model works to establish a connec-tion between all parties, to identify body per-formance, and then train toward a goal.

Exercise alone has been shown todecrease the risk of chronic disease inhumans and dogs. Overall muscle functionimproves with daily exercise. If there is an

injury, even with devastating issues, often these dogswill return to high quality function that defies the odds.Dogs with musculoskeletal imbalances and weaknessestend to have higher rates of injury. A dog that has a goodbase of fitness developed over several years will be ableto move on to tougher challenges with fewer injuriescompared to a less fit dog of similar age, mental focusand body shape without a fitness base.

We realize that all dogs do not start at the same pointor have the same capabilities. Whether your dog is apuppy or a senior, a performance or working dog, a fam-ily pet, or one with special conditions (like obesity), ourprogram concepts can be applied across all life stages.Keeping our dogs fit throughout their life will ultimate-ly reduce injuries, increase self-confidence and improveour dog’s ability to enjoy a full and high functioning life.

Some of the benefits of the training activitiesinclude:

• Improved reaction and control• Increased trunk and core strength• Stabilization of weak areas• Improved balance and proprioception (awareness

of the body's position in space)

• Increased range of motion in joints & elongation ofthe muscles

• Improved sensory & body awareness• Preventing sports-related injuriesContact the FitPAWS® Master Trainer™ Canine

The focus of holistic dentistry is to considerthe mouth as a part of the whole body. We usematerials and methods that are more compatiblebiologically with the body instead of the tradi-tional dental materials. Examples of non-com-patible materials are mercury fillings, non-pre-cious heavy metal crowns, bridges and partialsor dentures. Alternatives to fluoride are used

for the prevention of cavities.Proper alignment of the jaws and teeth are

the foundation of how the body perceives itselfin space. The result of improper alignment canresult in symptoms of headache, ears ringing, loss of hearing, pain in the head and neck andclenching or grinding of the teeth.

Good nutrition is inseparable for good

health. If your diet consists of food and drinkmade with white flour, sugar and no fresh fruitsand vegetables, your body is likely to be acidicwith resultant more medical and dental prob-lems.

he reason you can’t lose weight hasnothing to do with your will-

power, over-eating or the Right Diet!...The Reason you are fat and unhealthy

is because you have disgusting plaqueand horrible little ‘CRITTERS’ living inyour guts!

This is harmful Plaque (below) - Everybody hasit. But to keep from getting sick and to be able tomaintain a healthy bodyweight you MUST getrid of it now!

If you don't, it willeventually cause you tonot be able to loseweight (regardless ofhow much you diet andexercise!) and eventu-ally it will kill you!

These are harmfulParasites (right) -Everybody has them.If left to live and breedinside your stomach, small and largeintestines and colon, they will eventually cause youto puff up, gain lots of weight, get sick more often, and take many, many years off your life!

They use your body as a 'Food Storehouse' andso they can live and breed by the millions. But nowit's time to flush them out and down the toilet forgood. If you don't they will just make you fatter andmuch, much sicker!

Would you trust anything living in your bowelsthat has teeth but NO eyes?

It makes sense that if diets were really meant towork then you'd hear more and more stories of peo-ple who used them successfully.

But that's NOT what you hear at all!Instead, all you hear about are your

friends complaining that they've beenstarving themselves to death -- yet stillhave trouble losing a single pound!

The main reason this is so is becausedangerous parasites living inside their guts(and even YOURS!) excrete chemicals(waste products) that travel to your brain

and tell your "hypothalamus" to make you storemore and more fat for THEM to eat!

In other words, these parasites are making you aGIANT 'food factory' for THEM to eat!

Imagine how easy it is to get this one parasitealone! It's in poorly cooked fish and actually layseggs inside your bowels. (You know this is true orelse why do we always say "close the lid on the toi-let" to keep our pets safe from drinking parasite-laden water?)

Even your bladder is not safefrom harmful parasites that lay10,000s of eggs! ...

Parasites can even become"mineralized" and block yourbody's ability to absorb nutritionproperly! ...

These little critters are no joke! They are DEADLY!

Not only can they hurt you while they are aliveinside your guts, but they can die and then becomemineralized (just like a fossil!) and cause painfulswelling, blockages and other harmful things.

But enough of grossing you out -- I'd rather justcut to the chase and tell you of my upcoming FREE“Take Control of Your Health Seminar”. Call ouroffice for our next seminar date, 314-282-3990.
