Contributors throughout the year included Michelle Zhu, Rebecca Prisand, Liz Tsang, and Karin Sammoriya, all who helped cement the Hawks incredible run. In the team county tournament the team finished 4th out of 16 teams. This is the best finish for the varsity program in quite a long time. Sari Arrow, the teams undisputed leader and captain also bested her best finish at the individual tournament with a 2nd place finish and ended the season with an incredible 177.4 average that was 4th highest in the county at the end of the year earning her All-County hon- ors. With a record of 9-3 in conference, the girls finished 2nd in conference AA-2 and earned a 6 seed in the Nassau county playoffs. Unfortunately, the season ended in the quarterfinals against a tough opponent in Freeport. Freshman Emma Kimmel led the team in scoring and finished 4th in Nassau County in 3 point field goals made with 52. Senior, Eunice Yim and junior, Amanda Ortsman led the team on and off the court as co-captains. These three ladies all received post season awards this year. Amanda Ortsman earned All– County honors, while Emma Kimmel and Eunice Yim earned All-Class. Thank you to the senior class, Eunice Yim and Samantha Fried for their dedication to the program. Every player on the Varsity Basketball team has shown motivation to push themselves to new limits, and dedication to this team. Looking forward to next year! Congratulations to the team!

One of the core values of the Plainview Old Bethpage Athletic Department is that “ Every student athlete and coach will aim for, pursue and achieve high academic standards”.

Once again our student athletes and coaches worked hard to ensure that numerous Varsity teams earned the distinction of NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete Team. This award is given to a

team which has 75% of their roster with accumulative GPA of 90 or higher. This award is a great achievement for any interscholastic athletic team and demonstrates a true commitment to education from our student athletes, coaches, teachers and support staff.

In addition to our team’s academic success, 75% of our varsity student athletes received the individual scholar athlete award. Given to any varsity student athlete with a 90 GPA or higher.

This winter season the following teams earned the NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete Team Award:

This winter the Varsity Basketball team had the opportunity to tour of ESPN . This was possible thanks to Alumni Seth Greenberg.

effort, even when odds

are against you.”

The Girl’s Winter Track team had its best season in over 20 years. For the first time ever in POB history, a member of the team qualified and raced in the NYS Championships in both Cross Country and Winter Track & Field in consecutive sea-sons. That individual is none other than Senior Captain Sinead Heaney. Sinead represented all of Nassau County in the NYS Cross Country Championships with the 3rd best time in Nassau County. She followed that incredible feet with a winter track season for the record books. Sinead broke the school record in the 1000m, 1500m, Mile, 3000m, 4 x 800

relay, and the Distance Medley Relay. Sinead competed in the NYS Winter Track Champion-ships as part of an intersectional distance medley relay with three other athletes from Port Washington, South Side, and Friends Academy. Sinead ran the anchor distance portion of the relay and ran a personal best mile time. Sinead earned MVP for the team as well as All Con-ference and All County for all of Nassau County. A team is not an individual though. Also adding to this record season was Senior Samantha Oliva who set our school record in Weight Throw and lead the team in Shot Put. Amy Lederer lead the team in the 55m, High Hurdles, 300m, and as part of the 4 x 800 school record relay with Sinead and Jane Wernow. Jane is not only a captain but the leader of the team both on and off the track. Congratulations to Head Coach Justin Carey and Assistant Coach Joaquin Calatayud for their team’s epic accomplish-ments.

sion 3 NCAA tournament.

2018-2019 Interscholastic Sports Schedule

Throughout this school year, the POBMS Physical Education staff have had the privilege of recognizing students who have displayed exceptional character and an enthusiasm for every opportunity to improve themselves, as well as for helping others to do the same. Each monthly award winner earned the title of “Physical Education Student of the Month.” These students serve as role models for all of us. They are active, accepting, and ambitious. They are humble, hard-working, responsible, and resilient. Asking for nothing in return, they arrive each day for class, ready to give their best for all of those around them. These students offer their energy and effort each time they step into our classroom! Never hesitating to aid others in this setting, which they have learned to excel, these leaders are well-deserving of entry into this class of esteemed Physical Education students. It is our pleasure to present the P.O.B.M.S. Physical Education Students of the Month so far this year!
