Chronicle photos by Lee Ostrom Hartwig, Clouse capture crowns By Kevin Simonson Special to The Chronicle Because of match count issues, the GSL/LP wrestlers were not at full strength when they headed south to Lake Crystal for the inaugural Lake Crystal Welcome Memorial Invita- tional (LCWM). The Panthers, who have been filling all 14 weights re- cently, only had 11 competitors for last Saturday’s meet. Missing from the lineup were regu- lars Jacob Jewett, Aaron Donnay, Brandon Richter, Nate Tesch and Ray Eberhard. Others were missing due to potential 9th-grade section and 9th- grade state meet matches. A wrestler can compete in only 36 matches be- fore the section dual meet tourna- ment. Of the 11 wrestlers competing in the LCWM tourney, seven of them placed with three advancing to the fi- nals. Wrestling in the finals were Michael Donnay (120), Mitchell Hartwig (145) and Dalton Clouse (195). Winning titles were Hartwig and Clouse. The championship match at 145 was a dream matchup between two highly ranked wrestlers. Tanner Trembley from LCWM had not expe- rienced defeat since he lost two matches in Glencoe on Dec. 15, 2011. His two losses that night were to Mitchell Hartwig from GSL/LP, 8-5, and Sam Brancale from Eden Prairie, 5-3. Brancale ended up winning the AAA state title at 126 while Trembley went on to win the Class A 132- pound state title. This championship match was 0-0 after one period with Trembley win- ning the flip for choice in the second. He chose the down position and is known for being a scrambler. But Hartwig was able to put him on his back for a two-point nearfall. After injury time, Trembley earned an es- cape, but Hartwig quickly scored a takedown to lead 4-1 going into the third period. Hartwig was given an escape late in the third to win this classic match 5-1. Hartwig advanced to the finals with a pin in the quarterfinals and a 4-0 de- Ober tops GSL list for most career boards By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor C larissa Ober scored 22 points, hauled down 15 re- bounds and blocked five shots in Glencoe-Silver Lake’s bas- ketball assignment at New London- Spicer last Tuesday — a 73-59 win for NLS, whose Taylor Thunstedt, a junior guard, tallied 50 points. Despite her team’s loss, Ober’s night was something special, too. With her fifth board, the 6-foot-1 senior became GSL’s all-time leader for most rebounds in a career, pass- ing Carolyn Busse’s previous list topper. Busse had 842 in her career; with another 15 in last Friday’s 53- 36 setback at Orono, Ober has 868. That is with at least 12 games still to play, assuming she stays healthy. “She takes a lot of pride in her re- bounding,” says GSL head coach — and dad — Cullen Ober. “The main thing is, she moves. She goes and gets that ball.” Ober will graduate being her school’s all-time leader in rebounds and blocked shots. Currently, she has 300 blocked shots, which are 162 more than anyone else. Wait! There could be more. Ober’s 1,263 career points rank second to Brittany Thiesfeld’s 1,446 on GSL’s list of all-time scoring leaders. If the future South Dakota State University Jackrabbit averages 15.3 points per game in GSL’s next 12 games she will move to the top of the list. She also is sixth on GSL’s all-time steals list, with 203 (leader Busse graduated with 321), and 10th in made 3-point field goals (Amanda Kinzler’s 315 top that list). Because of match count issues, theGSL/LP wrestlers were not at fullstrength when they headed south toLake Crystal for the inaugural LakeCrystal Welcome Memorial Invita-tional (LCWM). The Panthers, whohave been filling all 14 weights re-cently, only had 11 competitors forlast Saturday’s meet.

Missing from the lineup were regu-lars Jacob Jewett, Aaron Donnay,Brandon Richter, Nate Tesch and RayEberhard. Others were missing due topotential 9th-grade section and 9th-grade state meet matches. A wrestlercan compete in only 36 matches be-fore the section dual meet tourna-ment.

Of the 11 wrestlers competing inthe LCWM tourney, seven of themplaced with three advancing to the fi-nals. Wrestling in the finals wereMichael Donnay (120), MitchellHartwig (145) and Dalton Clouse(195). Winning titles were Hartwigand Clouse.

The championship match at 145was a dream matchup between twohighly ranked wrestlers. TannerTrembley from LCWM had not expe-rienced defeat since he lost twomatches in Glencoe on Dec. 15, 2011.His two losses that night were toMitchell Hartwig from GSL/LP, 8-5,and Sam Brancale from Eden Prairie,5-3. Brancale ended up winning theAAA state title at 126 while Trembleywent on to win the Class A 132-pound state title.

Clarissa Ober scored 22points, hauled down 15 re-bounds and blocked five

shots in Glencoe-Silver Lake’s bas-ketball assignment at New London-Spicer last Tuesday — a 73-59 winfor NLS, whose Taylor Thunstedt, ajunior guard, tallied 50 points.

Despite her team’s loss, Ober’snight was something special, too.

Finishing second for thePanthers was Michael Donnay.After receiving a bye in thequarterfinals, he faced LouieSanders from LCWM. Sanderswas ranked No. 2 in the state at120 in Class A.

After giving up the initialtakedown early in the match,Donnay scored a reversal andtwo-point nearfall to lead 4-2after the first period. Sandersscored an escape to start thesecond period and a quick take-down to lead 5-4. But he wasunable to hold down Donnay,who earned a quick escape andhis own takedown to lead 7-5after two. Donnay scored anescape in the third to win 8-5.

In the finals he dropped a 4-2decision to the top seed IsaacLoosbrock from Chaska/Chan-hassen. Loosbrock scored atakedown in the first and a re-versal in the second. Donnayscored a two-point nearfall inthe second prior to Loosbrock’sreversal. Neither wrestlerscored in the third.

Finishing in fourth place wasJohn Williams (170) and takingfifth place honors was DylanMelchert (138). Williams was2-2 on the day and both losseswere by two points each withhis opponent scoring a take-down in the closing seconds.Melchert picked up his firstever varsity win in the fifthplace match with a pin.

Sixth place finishers wereChris Lemke (285) and KylePolzin (132).

Competing but not placingwere Alex Mielke (126), NickJenkins (152), Martin Lezama(160) and — making his debut

to the wrestling mat — ColtonLueders (182).

The wrestlers played host toSt. Peter last night in a big sec-tion match held in LesterPrairie. Thursday night theywrestle Mound-Westonka forparents night and alumni night.Friday, they travel to NewPrague for two section dualswith New Prague and MankatoWest.

After winning the champi-onship game of their boosterclub’s holiday tournament, theGSL Panthers stood 6-2 for the2012 part of their schedule.Robb DeCorsey’s boys were 5-0 on their home court.

But so far, things have not

gone as well in 2013.Last Tuesday at home, the

Panthers dropped a WrightCounty Conference tussle withNew London-Spicer. The Wild-cats, trailing 63-55, scored thegame’s last 10 points to pull outa 65-63 victory.

Facing another WCC foe lastFriday at home, the Panthers

fell to Orono, 79-64.The following night, GSL

lost 67-64 in overtime at Fari-bault of the Big Nine Confer-ence.

Suddenly, GSL is 8-7 overall,with a 6-3 record at home and a1-4 mark in their league — itsDecember wins over Hutchin-son and Holy Family Catholic

Emma Griebie, 28, wife ofJohn Griebie of Collins Township,died Jan. 15, 1913. Mrs. Griebiehad been afflicted for eight yearswith tuberculosis of the lungs;during the last six weeks failingrapidly until, conscious that thehour of dissolution was close athand, she bade her loved onesfarewell and passed away. In herdeath a home loses a beloved wifeand mother and the neighborhooda good Christian woman. Besidesthe sorrowing husband, she leavesthree children, Johnnie, 8; Louisa,6; and Florence, 4.

The home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed-ward Peik, a mile north of Brown-ton, was brightened Saturday bythe arrival of a son.

We learn that William Kreiehas purchased the residence prop-erty of the William Fahrwald es-tate and occupied the same thefore part of the week. Mr. Kreiealso bought two lots just east ofthe German Lutheran parsonage,onto which he will move hisbuildings that he retained in thesale of his property to the railroadcompany.

Last Wednesday afternoon,Martin Lindeman became themanager of the Phillips 66 ServiceStation, which was formerly oper-ated by Selle & Hellmer next tothe Dinette. Martin has had sever-al years experience in the dispens-ing of gasoline while his father,Emil Lindeman, operated a stationhere.

Harry Dawson and son ofCollins Township were the vic-tims of an automobile accident on

Highway 15 at Heil’s cornershortly after dinner when theywere hit head-on by a car drivenby some folks from Sebeka. Bothcars were badly damaged. Mr.Dawson and his son were bruisedand shaken up, while the folks inthe other car were cut and bruised.

With Minnesota in the grips ofa cold wave that rivals the famous1936 freezer, social activity in thecommunity has slowed to a virtualhalt. Instead of the 100 to 125 so-cial items, the Bulletin’s “local”page is down to about 50 items.Early Wednesday morning, thetemperature got down to about 28degrees below zero at Minneapo-lis and prospects are that Min-nesota weather is going to breakan all-time record for hours ofzero or below temperatures.

The meeting at Liberty Hall lastSaturday afternoon for the pur-pose of organizing a farmers’ co-operative livestock shipping asso-ciation was largely attended with100 to 150 farmers present. A newassociation was formed with theselection of George McCarty aschairman and Mr. J.C. Stockmanof Round Grove as secretary. Thefollowing board of directors wasthen elected: Henry Proehl, RoundGrove; Paul Quandt, Grafton; J.G.Neuhaus, Preston Lake; PhilipPlaisance Jr., Collins; G.F. McCar-ty, Collins; W.A. Piehl, RoundGrove; and Nels Lenander, Pre-ston Lake. No permanent managerwas selected at this meeting, andPlaisance is acting in this capacitytemporarily. The association willmake its first shipment of stocknext Tuesday.

A new schoolhouse for Stewartwill be a reality in 1938. Thispleasing news was circulatingabout the district last Friday after-noon after the opening of the bidson the revised plans for the newstructure. Work is already underway, and it will be rushed to com-pletion. Eleven bids were entered

for the general construction of thebuilding, with the bid beingawarded to The Builders Compa-ny of St. Paul will be the generalcontractor. Total cost of the build-ing will be $85,543.

The Scholl Cafe of this village,managed by the Scholls for thepast nine months, has been sold toMr. and Mrs. Arnold Kamrath ofBrookfield Township in RenvilleCounty, possession being given onJan. 1. The Kamraths were unableto move here until last weekend,and are now settled in theGutknecht residence. They are ac-tively in charge of the businesswith Mrs. Scholl remaining untilFeb. 1 to help them get accus-tomed to their new surroundings.

The card party given at theCommunity Hall on Wednesdaynight by the St. Mary’s and St.Boniface societies of the localCatholic church was another bigsuccess with nearly 50 tablesbeing pressed into service for theplayers. Prizes were awarded andEd Gutknecht was awarded the $5cash prize.

A furnace explosion threatenedthe Charles Kalenberg home hereSaturday afternoon about 3:30,and left the house cold and filled

with smoke. The temperature wasbelow zero, and the family wasaccommodated by neighbors untilheat was restored. Mr. Kalenbergwas in the basement when the ex-plosion occurred, knocking thepipes off the furnace. ChiefRichards arrived at the Kalenberghome with a dry chemical extin-guisher, checking the fire in thecombustion chamber of the fur-nace. The basement rafters werecharred by the fire.

A Sunday afternoon of snow-mobiling fun was abruptly haltedabout 4:30 p.m. when one of theriders was injured. The accidenthappened near the MaynardStockmann farm, south of Stew-art. Injured in the mishap wasJames Stockmann of rural Stew-art, who was riding a large innertube being pulled by a snowmo-bile being driven by Bryan Voelk-er. The inner tube struck a utilitypole, throwing Stockmann againstthe pole and injuring him. TheBuffalo Lake Ambulance took Mr.Stockmann to the Hutchinson hos-pital, where it was revealed that hehad broken the pelvic bones in hiship. He was placed in traction, andtransferred Monday evening toMetropolitan Hospital in Min-neapolis for further treatment.

The Stewart Fire Departmentanswered a call to the DavidGreiner home, about three milessouth of Stewart, at about 1:30a.m. Tuesday. A faulty carburetorin the oil heater caused the firethat spread to the kitchen floor.Greiner attempted to control thefire while his wife ran to Busslersto call the fire department. Therewas no serious damage. Firemenwere on the scene about an hour.

Program Ordinance

The City Council of the City of

Biscay has adopted ordinance num-

ber 2013-001 creating rules, regula-

tions, charges, and penalties regard-

ing connections to and use of the

wastewater collection system to be

installed by the City. The ordinance

also established a maintenance pro-

gram for those properties that will

not be connected to the collection

system and creates rules, regulations,

charges, and penalties regarding par-

ticipation in the maintenance pro-

Sheriff’s Report

On Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 8:05a.m., the sheriff’s office respond-ed to a call of a 2-year-old childwho was locked inside a vehicleat a residence on 97th Court,south of Plato. The deputy calleda locksmith, the vehicle was un-locked and everything was fine.

At 11:53 a.m., Tuesday, thesheriff’s office responded to an in-ternet scam call from an individ-ual at an address on 170th St,southwest of Silver Lake.

The sheriff’s office respondedto a garbage dumping complaintin the area of Ideal Avenue and247th Street, north of Silver Lake,on Tuesday afternoon. Thedeputy wrote a solid waste report.

At 9:40 p.m., the sheriff’s officeassisted the Winsted Police witha gas drive-off from a business onSixth Street North in Winsted.

On Wednesday, Jan. 16, aftersnow fell in the area, a number ofvehicles ended up in ditches.

At at 8:06 a.m., the sheriff’s of-fice responded to a vehicle in theditch in the area of County Road7 and 220th Street, northeast ofHutchinson. The vehicle sus-tained no damage and there wereno injuries.

At 2:30 p.m., a vehicle was re-ported in the ditch in the area of200th Street and Oday Avenue,east of Hutchinson. Also assist-ing was the Minnesota State Pa-trol. The vehicle sustained nodamage and there were no in-juries.

At 3:21 p.m., the sheriff’s officeassisted State Patrol with vehi-cles in the ditch in the area ofHighway 7 and Kale Avenue,west of Silver Lake.

The sheriff’s office assisted theState Patrol with a vehicle in theditch in the area of Highway 7and Kale Avenue, west of SilverLake at 4:39 p.m.

At 10:57 p.m., the sheriff’s of-fice responded to a report of a ve-hicle that went into the ditch onCounty Road 2, north of Glencoe.Also responding were the Glen-coe Police and the Glencoe Am-bulance. The vehicle, a 1998Oldsmobile 88, driven by a 16-year-old juvenile from Glencoe,sustained over $1,000 in damage.The juvenile was transported tothe Glencoe Regional HealthServices by private vehicle. Thedeputy wrote a state accident re-port and issued a citation.
