How did you and your brothers get into the Phuket resort business? My two younger brothers and I grew up and went to school in Phuket and you could say that “catering and service is in our blood.” Our father and his brother founded the famous Laem Ton Restaurant in Phuket Town and we grew up watching the daily food preparation and customer service. That early exposure stood us in good stead for a life in the service and tourism sector I think. I went to university both in Texas and then the Gold Coast in Australia, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Hotel Management then worked with established resorts such as Le Meridien, Banyan Tree and then in property sales to gain “real life” experience and to make lots of contacts. Finally, in 2009 we decided the time was ripe to go it alone and we started to build our resort on this stunning piece of hillside land overlooking Kalim Bay that our parents had acquired 30 years ago. We took two years constructing, then soft-opened for three months, and nally had our “Grand Launch” in November 2012.

What are the concept and design elements that make Kalima Resort different? I worked personally with the designer and architect to create a functionally modern resort but with recognizable Thai touches such as all the lovely wood highlights. Location and aspect are of course critical to a resort’s success. Here we have terri c hillside vistas across Kalim Bay, but we are just a short ride to Patong, so our guests can enjoy the restaurants and nightlife there, but retreat to a quiet, relaxed and stunning home base.

After your rst high season, who are your key customers? We have 190 keys in total and a broad range of accommodation types from deluxe condos, to honeymoon suites, to private pool villas, so we appeal to an equally broad range of demographics. Certainly Asians and Korean honeymooners nd us very appealing, as do younger Aussies who like the access to Patong nightlife, as do older couples who like the privacy of our pool and duplex villas, our huge swimming pool, the hillside restaurant and the spa facilities.

How is 2013 shaping up for Kalima? We have been through a steep learning curve I think and we are still nding our way in terms of marketing and promotion. The “Green Season” will also be a time of upgrading physical elements of the resort such as opening a second swimming pool in front of the villas and maintaining the walkways and building roofs over them as they can get slippery. We are also having a big push on building our reputation and a strong “word-of-mouth” among Thai audiences through hosting various TV personalities, fashion shows and TV programs, and we believe that we will really take off next High Season.

GETTING TO KNOW

It’s another lovely sunny day in Kalim as Khun Paponphat (Ton) and I sit down in the airy, expansive main restaurant of his resort and take in the stunning views across Kalim Bay and the verdant headland beyond which lies Patong.

SEDUCTION BEACH CLUBSexy and stylish are two words you will instantly relate to once you have visited Seduction. It promises big nights out and it delivers regularly. The rst Saturday of every month is a “must-attend” for all serious party goers Seduction is the very best Phuket has to offer in terms of quality international DJ’s and high tempo club nights. If you’re looking for the clubbing scene then Seduction is the place to be.

THE GUIDE’S HOT PICK

OF PATONG

THE GUIDE’S HOT PICK OF PHUKET TOWN

Phuket Town boasts a good selection of bars and more relaxed watering holes. With its own character, it offers more authenticity and space when compared to the crowds of Patong and a great night out can be had by all with a little help and a small push in the right direction from The Guide.

TIMBER HUT Timber Hut offers arguably one of the best atmospheres in Phuket. Exceptional live music and popular bands play in the center of the venue surrounded by a welcoming crowd all moving to the music. With two oors, each with its own bar and seating areas, you can stand on the balcony and watch the band ignite the crowd, or be captured by the energy on the ground oor leaving you with no choice but to dance and have a good time.

SANAEHAThe trendiest hangout in Phuket Town, complete with a chic and sophisticated setting, this is the perfect spot to impress a date, or enjoy with a small group of friends. With crisp off an endlessly stylish feel. This fashionable venue features live music several nights a week offering an intimate yet exclusive atmosphere

ROM DEERom Dee is a small bar that caters for those wishing to get away from the extravagant music of the larger venues. Located next door to Sanaeha, Rom Dee is a quaint place for drinks and cozy conversation. A popular alternative to the powerful dance clubs and lively bars, Rom Dee suits locals and tourists alike.

ROCKIN’ANGELSNot just another live music bar, Rocking Angels brings together musicians of Phuket and from other nations who all wish to Jam and participate. The owner leads by example, happily taking requests and having a huge passion for playing all night long. The main focus of the music normally circles around Blues, Rock and Roll and Roots however don’t be surprised to nd that the Blues in uence will take over as the night goes on.

TheThe GUIDEGUIDE to to NIGHT LIFE !NIGHT LIFE !The Nightlife in Phuket is unique and not to be missed. The cauldron of action of action is centered on the ery beach front on the southwest side in the infamous Patong. Beach area. The nightlife in Patong never fails to attract curious visitors every evening. Like a magnet, all are attracted to Soi Bangla, the heart of the bar scene. The ever enchanting bar girls, neon lights and exaggerated sound systems compete for the attention of all who fail to resist pleasures of Bangla.

RED HOT CLUBNew to the constantly evolving Bangla is the Red Hot Club. Bringing with it a host of quality live music from their very own house band and a welcoming theme and environment that seems to capture the ambience of a Canadian or Austrian wooden chalet, set high in the mountains where drinks are plentiful and good times are rife. The house band of seven includes several individually talented performers and the two ‘front men’ interact with the crowd all night on stage and off stage whilst producing quality vocals. It’s easy for these two to take all of the crowd’s attention. That is until the solo guitarist and the soulful reggae vocalist get their turn to impress the passionate spectators.

Live music, played alongside a large buffet, overlooking a clear blue swimming pool on a Sunday afternoon characterizes the Sunday Brunch as a true Hilton experience. Their goal is to satisfy Phuket’s tourists, expats and the resort guests. Hilton’s variety of international dishes captures all three regardless of where one is from. The afternoon starts with a ‘make-your-own’ salad station where options such as Caesar or Greek Salads are available. For the seafood lovers, two stations are dedicated to the freshest “Treasure from the Sea”. Other stations offer Indian, Japanese, Chinese, Western and Thai cuisine that includes salads, dumplings, sushi, curry and many other ingredients tailored to every palate. There are stations dedicated to distinct soups, breads and cheeses. The live cooking station adds to your Sunday afternoon with freshly-roasted BBQ offerings. The culmination of the Sunday Brunch ends with an extensive selection of desserts like tarts, cakes, cookies and mousses. Cakes ranging from raspberry, chocolate, fudge, peanut crunch and black forest gateau are among the offerings.

Executive Chef Joseph Nagy leads a culinary team that not only originates from all corners, but has also honed their skills from all parts of the globe. Their global experience takes you on a memorable gastronomic journey. They have their own Indian chef who deploys

the exciting world of spices and curries such as chicken tikka masala, combined with creamy dal, and crispy papad-ams for all to enjoy. This wealth of talent within the culinary team also extends to the art of producing popular Thai dishes like the tangy Thai papaya salad.

Since the island turned from a shing village to a world-class tourist destination, Hilton’s Sunday brunch has remained a cornerstone of exciting family dining for Phuket’s community. Through experience and tradition over the years, the resort reinvents its dining experience through the new culinary team, building on an already popular Sunday Brunch. For 1,400++ baht, diners are treated to an exciting dining journey combined with a bottle of great wine. For 700++ baht, children dine to tailored kids’ dishes and are entertained with fun activities such as a balloon artist. CAPANNINAItalian This restaurant offers the best pizza in Phuket, by far, with good choice and quality ingredients. Mario, the boss, is “al forno” making pizza himself. The pasta dishes are also perfect. We recommend the 4-cheese penne, seafood spaghetti ‘scoglio’ red sauce or tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms. The road running behind Junceylon in Patong is probably best described as a “work in progress” these days, as it’s a crazy mayhem of billowing dust, chaotic traf c and abundant potholes. Driving down here you quickly seek a sanctuary in which to regain your balance and fortitude. Turn inland at a set of (non-functioning) traf c lights down Sainamyen Road and you will nd exactly the sanctuary you need in the welcoming shape of the Sawaddi Patong Resort. Sitting opposite a kaleidoscopic array of fruit and ower stalls, the resort’s enthusiastic and friendly staff welcomes you in, displaying a dedication to hedonism and pleasure which immediately rejuvenates your soul after the chaos of Patong.

The Resort is the choice of a large number of visitors to Phuket who seek a great time, with great food, at great value and everything about Sawaddi Patong Resort is dedicated to providing this winning formula.

For example, the Resort stages regular events that are all great fun and extremely good value and certainly get the party going.

On Mondays enjoy free- ow Sangria and Tapas from 3pm to 5:30pm for just 399 baht….. a terri c way to start the week. Wednesdays see the beer buffet and Thai Tapas from 6pm to 8pm for 499 baht take off. Or get the weekend going at the Saturday BBQ

Buffet with wines for just 699 baht. All these events are often held around the Sawaddi Patong Resort’s big swimming pool and see participants quickly divesting their clothing and diving into the water to bop and groove the evening away. Many local residents living nearby also come by to use the Resort’s swimming and kiddies’ pools, gymnasium, pool table and other facilities, all of which are free of charge when you dine there. There is also a daily Happy Hour with a 50% discount on local beers and cocktails from 16:30 to 20:00 hrs at the Pool Bar and from 19:00 to 20:00 hrs at the Pleondi Lobby.

On my visit we started off at the welcoming Ploendi Lobby Lounge bar where we enthusiastically downed some of the signature cocktails - Sawaddi Tropez Smash (with abundant Stolichnaya Vodka) and Man Goes Nuts (with abundant Mangoes …..get it??) while watching the passing paradew on the soi outside the glass windows.

We then sat outside in the front forecourt enjoying the daily BBQ skewers and all-you-can-eat salad bar, amazingly good value at 159 baht a person. There’s also free WiFi and good Chilean wine by the glass for just 99 baht, which has to be one of the best bargains in all of Phuket!

We also managed to nd tummy space to savor some of the Chef’s wonderful mango salad, grilled Tiger Prawns in tamarind sauce, seafood on a hot plate and rounded all this off with an amazing mango pie and cream. Sawadi also offer a take-away service on their menu which is much loved by the many resident ex-pats who live nearby.

This dedicated Palace of Hedonism and Great Value is just an 800 meter, ten minute walk from Patong Beach, but even offers a tuk-tuk service to take you there.

In fact Sawaddi Resort has thought of everything!

10 Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar1. Balance your inner ecosystem: The body constantly strives to achieve a state of equilibrium. One way to do this is by keeping the body’s pH balance (or acid-base balance) within the normal range of 7.35 – 7.45. Apple cider vinegar helps the body maintain a healthy alkaline pH level. Research shows that higher acid levels (lower pH level) lead to a lack of energy, excessive production of mucous and higher incidences of infection.

2. Cleanses the body: As part of balancing the body’s pH, apple cider vinegar is useful in overall cleansing of the body. Research shows that it can help stimulate cardiovascular circulation and help detoxify the liver. It also helps break up mucous throughout the body and helps cleanse the lymph nodes.

3. Weight loss: Data shows some limited, albeit signi cant, weight loss bene ts from sustained daily intake of acetic acid (which is abundant in apple cider vinegar). In one study it was found that people who consumed acetic acid for 12 weeks experienced signi cant declines in body weight, abdominal fat, waist circumference and triglycerides.

4. Cure for Allergies: Research suggests that apple cider vinegar can help reduce the effect of allergies on your body, mostly by reducing mucous and sinus congestion. A sign of a distressed immune system is an increase and thickening of mucous; apple cider vinegar helps reduce the build-up and congestion, thereby reducing your susceptibility to allergies.

5. Cure for sinus infections: Reducing the effects of allergies can also reduce the frequency of sinus infections and the symptoms associated with them, such as sore throats and headaches. Boosting your immune system can also curb bouts of the u.

aw 1-76.indd 44 18/5/2556 0:54:35

6. Clears acne, dermatitis, warts and other skin problems: Some practitioners recommend mixing one part apple cider vinegar and three parts water and dabbing the solution on each pimple. For warts, some recommend soaking a cotton ball in an apple cider vinegar solution then placing it over the wart with a band-aid overnight. The skin will swell some as it reacts with the solution and may throb; it may even turn black after a few days. Once it falls off, though, continue the treatment for a few more days, to make sure the wart doesn’t return.

7. Lower blood pressure and cholesterol: One of the most important “healing” qualities of apple cider vinegar is its ability to lower blood pressure and triglycerides, the bad cholesterol. Try 1-2 teaspoons of vinegar in about eight ounces of water; if you want, add a teaspoon of honey to make it more palatable.

8. Kills Candida and fungus: This vinegar is rich in natural enzymes that can help rid your body of Candida – a genus of yeasts which can cause thrush, and is blamed for creating symptoms of fatigue, poor memory, sugar cravings, and yeast infections.

9. Eases arthritis, stiff joints and gout: Regular use of apple cider vinegar can be tied to a decrease in joint pain and gout by reducing in ammation.

10. Strengthens stomach acid: There is research suggesting that apple cider vinegar works by treating low acid and thereby reducing heartburn. Natural remedy experts say you should begin to feel relief – unless your problem is ulcers – very shortly after taking a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar followed by a glass of water.

Flawless La Flora!Right in the very heart of Patong, just a stone’s throw from Party Zone Central on Soi Bangla, is a very special boutique resort called La Flora.

There are extremely few luxury resorts with beach access to Patong’s sands and which are also just a short stagger from the bright lights, bars, shopping and restaurants of the heart of Patong and La Flora is one. That in itself makes it a highly desirable place to stay and although quite compact, La Flora’s creative design has allowed them to pack, not just one, but two extensive lap swimming pools, a spa, gymnasium, business center, reading corner and two excellent restaurants into their verdant plot directly abutting the golden sands of Patong Beach.

Although right on Beach Road, as soon as you enter the cool modern architecture of La Flora, you feel as though you have entered a gentler, saner parallel universe, where the staff is smiling and attentive and you immediately begin to relax and unwind.

La Flora is the only boutique resort in central Patong that offers pool villas, some of them right on the beach. There are 67 rooms in total which also feature Sea-view Suites plus Pool-view and Pool-access Suites. Our own suite opened out right onto a patio with loungers which gave immediate access to one of the large swimming pools, and so

Health & Beauty48

www.theguidephuket.com

aw 1-76.indd 48 18/5/2556 0:54:42

early morning and dusk swims were very much a feature of our stay. In fact you can almost swim onto Patong Beach itself at the end of the lap pool, and so dips in the Andaman Sea were also a feature of our stay. La Flora is ideal for those seeking a romantic getaway or honeymoon and viewing the hand-holding and cuddling from many of our fellow guests, it appeared that a lot of the other visitors fell into these categories.

The room décor is modern and comfortable and seems to incorporate every convenience you could ask for such as WiFi, large at screen TV’s, spacious bathrooms, balconies and patios plus swift and ef cient room service, should you need it. There’s also a very relaxing spa, a busi-ness center and reading corner with computers.

One of the really great highlights of La Flora is the rooftop restaurant named “Surface” which overlooks the beach and the Andaman Sea. Supper there as the westering sun does its pyrotechnic best to amaze you, is a real treat. The menu of Executive Chef Thanasak Thipayaroek features many classic western and Thai dishes including terri c sh and seafood, ne Aussie beef and New Zealand lamb, plus pastas, salads sandwiches and naughtily tempting desserts. There’s a good selection of cocktails, beers and wines by bottle and glass and most importantly the prices are very reasonable.

All in all, the phrase “Flawless La Flora” seems to perfectly sum up this gem of a resort right at the heart of Patong.

Serenity Resort & Residence Phuket overlooking the magical Chalong Bay and Lon Island proves yet again to be the magical dream wedding location for another very happy couple.

Monique and Scott from Australia had decided they would tie the knot, but Monique just couldn’t decide where would be the ideal location for the happiest day of her life.

Then Monique’s parents who had previously stayed at Serenity Resort & Residences, told her about the sensational resort and its wonderful location and service standards. Monqiue’s brother also happened to live in Rawai, so one evening he came to East 88 Beach Lounge at Serenity with his family and spent time swimming, enjoying a drink and dining. They were all very impressed and suggested to Monique that Serenity would be the ideal choice as the unforgettable location to tie the knot. She checked out the website and contacted Serenity about her wedding plans and then decided Serenity Resort & Residences could stage her dream wedding.

The bridal couple and their guests had a very happy experience at Serenity Resort & Residence and their wedding ceremony

Serenity Resort and Residences for Perfect Phuket Weddings

and the following dinner and party celebrations were perfect. So much so in fact, that they were happy for us to use their true life case to suggest to other loving couples that if you want the perfect wedding….Serenity is the perfect location!

Just an hour’s drive north of Phuket in mainland Phang Nga province, Khaolak is a beautiful area with long, sandy beaches fringed by the many surrounding national parks offering nature lovers a pristine landscape of beaches, jungle-covered mountains, forested valleys, mangroves and estuaries.

There’s an abundance of comfortable resorts and bungalows blending into

the scenery along the coastline and being more low-key than, Phuket, it’s a place to take it easy, read a book and

Nature ToursAs Khaolak is surrounded by national parks, an eco-friendly nature tour is a must. A typical tour with pick you up about 09:00 and you’ll be driven to a shery to have a look at the many exotic species there, and then taken to an elephant camp. Riding an elephant through the jungle is a life-enhancing

experience and you’ll be amazed at the gentleness of these huge beasts. After lunch you are bussed up to a camp in the mountains where bamboo rafts then take you downriver.

Trekking in Khao Sok National Park to the north is sublime and there are riverside cottages for rent, plus river rafting and tubing.

Scuba Diving and SnorkelingBeginner courses and daytrips for experienced divers are freely available, most groups making up about six divers maximum. For those who can’t get enough of the vivid underwater life in this area there are also live-aboard trips.

Due west from Khaolak is the Similan Island group with the Surin archipelago to the northwest and by speed boat you can reach the Similans in about 90 minutes from Taplamu Harbor to the south of Khaolak.

get back to nature. Go for long walks on the beach, take a nature tour and explore the interior, go sightseeing by elephant, trek through the jungle, or go rafting along the local rivers with one of the daily Eco-Tours.

Khaolak is also a great jumping off point in the high season for a trip to the Surin and Similan Islands, renowned for world-class scuba diving, or for the gorgeous Khao Sok National Park further to the north.

Sea KayakingThere are several companies offering sea cave kayaking tours from Khaolak to nearby Phang Nga Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the departure point, the ‘mother ship’, which also transports the kayaks, takes you to limestone islands that have collapsed into themselves leaving the interior intact and untouched over many years. Sea caves lead into these lagoons and when the tide is right the result is akin to visiting a parallel world where time stands still.

Wining and DiningKhaolak has an abundance of great Thai and international restaurants, pubs and bars, some offering music and all are welcoming and friendly.

Home Stays and EnvironmentalismNorth of Khaolak there are many Muslim villages offering fascinating home stays linked to local culture, agriculture and the environment. All are well worth visiting and of course help the local economies.

Ao Nang BeachJust 18 km from Krabi Town is beautiful Ao Nang with its 83 scattered islands. Each island is only a short distance from the next and so during low tide you can wade to a neighboring island, many with sandy beaches and crystal clear water and majestic limestone cliffs rising straight from the clear waters of the sea. Ao Nang has several famous beaches including East Rai Le, West Rai Le and Phra Nang cave which stretches to the foot of a prominent limestone range.

Noppharat Thara BeachJust 20 km west of Krabi and three miles long, this beach is lined with majestic Casuarina trees and is in fact part of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Marine Park and is the location of the Park headquarters. As with Ao Nang, it’s possible to reach other islands in the bay on foot during low tides.

Railay BeachThis beach is generally divided into two sections, east and west. West Railey provides visitors with peace and quiet as it is a broad sandy beach with fewer facilities than Ao Nang. East Railey which lies across the peninsula from West Railey is different from other beaches in the area as it could actually be classi ed as a mud at, especially during low tide. The main attraction for visitors to Railey Beach is the adrenaline pumping activity of cliff climbing. The limestone cliffs on the huge headland between East of Railey Beach and Phra Nang cave, as well as other nearby islands provide world-class rock climbing facilities against a stunning backdrop of the sea with approximately 700 routes of mid to high dif cult rating.

Pra Nang BeachConnected to Railay by a small path, Phra Nang is on the outermost

headland, backed by limestone cliffs soaring above the beach. At the bottom of the cliff lies the Princess Cave or Tham Phra Nang Nok where local shermen leave offerings for good fortune.

Klong Muang Beach/TubkaakKrabi's latest beach destination, Muang Klong boasts both 5-star and boutique hotels like the Sheraton Krabi Resort, the Nakamanda and the Tubkaak Resort and offers powderwhite sand and safe swimming.

The Lanta Island Group About 53 islands are included in this group situated at the southern limit of Krabi Province. Koh Lanta Yai is the largest and is both a traveler’s and up-market vacationer’s paradise and is as yet relatively undeveloped. You can get to Lanta on the regular ferry from Jao Fah Pier in Krabi Town. The prime attractions are its long beaches, clear water, laid back atmosphere and scuda diver’s paradise where most of the nicest beaches and tourist attractions are located.

The Phi Phi IslandsKnown for phenomenal natural beauty, particularly the famous twin bays with their the curving beaches upon which lies the largest town. Phi Phi islands are some of the most beautiful in the world with superb scenery, silvery sand beaches and Emerald green seas with coral reefs and an abundance of marine life. Hardly two hours journey by boat from Ao Nang, the twin islands Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh provide excellent accommodation options and are known as major “party islands.”

Poda IslandsSituated south of Ao Nang, 8 Kilometers offshore, Koh Poda or Poda Group Islands are fringed by clear waters and offer white sandy beaches, as well as, pristine coral reefs. These islands are not affected so much by the monsoon therefore are year-round attractions and an excellent place for shing. Poda island with white sand beaches and clear turquoise seawater abounded with schools of colorful sh.

Three hours drive south from Phuket through stunning limestone cli s and dense forest brings you to the southern playground of the Krabi region of the Andaman overlooking Phang Nga Bay with its many scattered islands, hidden bays and beaches.

Throw away your watch and bask in nature's beauty or snorkel, dive, rock climb, sh, kayak, hike, sail, party, spa or wine and dine to your heart’s content – this region has it all.

Highlight Attractions..Emerald PoolEmerald Pool or Sra Morakot in Thai is located at Klong Thom District. This hot spring originates from a warm stream in the lowland forest. The intensity of the pool’s turquoise colored water varies according to the light and time of the day so a good time to visit is at dawn or early morning.

Tiger Cave TempleTiger Cave Temple or Wat Tham Sua in Thai is located about 3 kilometers from Krabi town. The inside of this cave features tiger prints captured in stone and is in the middle of an abundant forest with gigantic ancient trees. This place is remarkable archaeologically as many artifacts have been found on the premises including tools, pottery and the mold for the Buddha’s footprint.

Highlights & Activities... Rock ClimbingApart from marine sports, Krabi is also an ideal place for rock climbing. Lines of sheer limestone cliffs along Tham Phranang and Rai Le Beaches have challenged thousands of climbers from all over the world every year. The levels of dif culty of the various routes vary, so Whether you’re a professional or just an aspiring adrenalin junkie, the craggy karsts of Krabi offer a huge array of bolted mounts.

DivingBoth scuba and snorkeling are widely available in warm, coral and sh infested waters with full PADI accreditation courses and live-aboard adventures.

Sightseeing by Canoe or KayakMany companies offer sea canoeing and kayaking adventures around Phang Nga Bay and into the many coves, caves and islets dotting the otherworldly shores around Krabi, Phi Phi and Koh Lanta.

FishingAbundant sea and even freshwater shing is available all over this region, from squid boating, to line shing in Phang Nga Bay, to big game adventures off the Continental Shelf drop-off. Don’t let that big one get away!

Bird WatchingA trip to Krabi can be a very rewarding visit for any bird lovers. With easily accessible mangroves and low lying forests, there are many places to spot rare birds. Two excellent locations are Khao Kanat Nam, close to Krabi Town, and Khao No Chuchi Forest Preserve.

PartyingPhi Phi is known worldwide as “PartyIsland central” and Koh Lanta is not far behind. Krabi Town is more sedate, but there are plenty of good bars and a live music scene to enjoy.
