In his book Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark, the late Carl Sagan ponders the certainty and unquestionability of history: “If you are unsure of the facts [of an historical event] replaying the event is an unavailable option. You can only dig into old records. You cannot even ask questions of the participants. Every one of them is dead.”

Delving into the history of winemaking at the Cape illustrates this perennial uncertainty when we contemplate what Jan van Riebeeck is said to have written in his journal on February 2 1659. The most popular translation reads: “Today, praise be to God, wine was made for the first time from Cape grapes”, but an alternative translation suggests he wrote: “Today - praise be to heaven - for the very first time the grapes of the Cape were pressed for winemaking.”

Whichever it might have been is lost in the uncertainty of history, as is the varietal used, or the quality and drinkability of the wine vinified from the first pressing of grapes from the Company Gardens. Instead, it is the subject of informed speculation based on available historical record.

Travel writer David Bristow, in a speculative piece about the provenance of the local wine industry wrote: “It’s thought the commander made his first wines from French Muscadel, but it was by all accounts rather rancid.”

But the uncertainty that oft bedevils history does not cloud the inevitable evolution that has occurred in the last 359 years. Granted, it has been in fits and starts, but if we look back in time, the landmark events are plain to see, from the pressing of those first grapes to the opening up of the world’s wine markets when our great leap forward happened in 1994.

But wine being what it is, we’re privileged to be able to take a journey back into the past, to time travel if you will, when we open that special bottle of really old wine that we have preserved for a special occasion.

It is at such times that we are able to marvel at how the enigmatic fruit of the grape has evolved as it slumbered in the cellar, and if we’re lucky and have another bottle or two, speculate on what yet may come to pass, when we open the next.

It is this nexus of enigma and evolution that draws in and beguiles the wine-lover, spurring the desire to explore, to acquire, to cellar and to enjoy wines that anchor themselves in two time dimensions: the venerable and exquisite creations of the winemaker’s art – this year a 1948 Monis Port will go under the hammer – and the contemporary wines that have benefited from the evolution in viticultural and cellar

INTRODUCTION

practices, the bringing under vine of new terroirs, and the introduction of heretofore unheard of grape varieties to our vineyards.

From its maiden voyage in 1975, the Nederburg Auction has grown in stature, and it has also evolved in nature to satisfy the demands of the contemporary fine wine buyer: it remains an affair of elegance, but it’s offering has been honed to showcase only the finest this industry has to offer, both young and old.

12 13

“South Africa is still ‘the most dynamic and exciting New World country’, thanks to terroir, vine age, and talented winemakers. And the world is taking notice.” Wine Advocate’s Neal Martin said this in his authoritative 2014 South Africa report, which is still true to this day.

It is this evolution of our industry, one forged by hardships, a wider world view and a return to the soil, that the Nederburg Auction’s 2018 theme “Evolve” celebrates.

A quick glance at the Auction attendance figures over the past five years will show the very encouraging increase in private buyers. Collectors, connoisseurs and wine lovers from around the world are quietly sniffing out pockets of excellence, and going after these iconic wines with a vengeance, as ever-rising prices indicate. Contemporary producers are achieving record prices for their creations as quality and demand increase, collectors and the like are willing to pay a premium for these outstanding and currently under-valued wines.

It is a vote of confidence in the Nederburg Auction as an appropriate platform for curated, provenanced investment decisions.

Those ahead of the curve know, and will tell you, that South Africa is riding a wave of good wine fortune. And while the rest of the wine public might still be deliberating about whether wine collecting makes investment sense, those determined and convinced are not only debating it. They are putting up their money.

There is wide acknowledgement that South African wine has come along in leaps and bounds, and there are increasing calls to right the incessant under-valuing of our cellar creations.

The current level of success for South African wines is driven jointly by the rediscovered mastery of our pre-democracy winemakers; and the more recent accolades garnered by the so-called New Wave of winemakers increasingly unlocking what our terroir really has to offer. In most instances producers are no longer following the textbook one-size-fits-all approach. They are gaining skills from abroad, but literally starting from the ground up by matching the correct vines and blends to the terroir as opposed to forcing vines on the terroir.

South African wine is being recognised as an investment asset class, along with its European and global counterparts. This year alone has seen at least two wine funds investing in South Africa wine; Roland Peens’ Wine Cellar VIP 2015 Fund and Ken Kinsey-Quicks’ Fine Diamond Wine Investment Fund. The former’s opportunities were sold out within one week. The latter will come to market with its second tranche in late September.

NONCONFORMITY - HOW THE SA WINE LANDSCAPE IS EVOLVING

Both of these funds are focussing on the “once-in-a-generation,” “rock star” 2015 vintage, where they have been ahead of the curve and secured these wines, most of which have been produced in very small quantities. This is a massive compliment to and acknowledgment of the dynamism and bold confidence our winemakers are taking in their creations. Jancis Robinson, for one, waxes lyrical about the future of South African wine. She says no other country, possibly except France, can boast such a radical group of young winemakers changing the wine horizon.

It is thanks to these daring and insightful producers that we get to invest in world-class wines; ones that have been selected by global experts and wines specifically selected with further aging in mind. These well-curated gems are being noticed by those with the buying power of pounds, euros and dollars. Locals will hopefully appreciate the current price points before it’s too late.

Enjoy every sip!

TUTORED TASTING: MICHAEL FRIDJHON

“Old wines, old vines – keeping the best for last”

by Michael Fridjhon

Friday 7 September at 16:00 to 17:00, Ingenuity and Manor House Rooms, Tasting Centre – Ticket holders only

Only great wines from great sites have the potential to age gracefully. Survival is not the same as evolution: the complexity which can come with the passage of time is the only justification for extended cellaring. Few of us get to savour vinous treasures at their peak. Eight such wines, now all on the plateau of their maturity, will be presented.

THE TUTORED TASTING WILL INCLUDE:

1. Nederburg 64 Port 19642. Chateau Libertas 19683. Nederburg Vintage Cabernet Sauvignon 19754. Chateau Libertas 19785. Oude Libertas Pinotage 19786. Zonnebloem Pinotage 19787. Nederburg Edelkeur 19968. Nederburg Private Bin Eminence 1998

“2018 Auction reds compared to South Africa’s greatest vintage”

by Roland Peens

Friday 7 September at 17:30 to 18:30, Ingenuity and Manor House Rooms, Tasting Centre – Ticket holders only

Explore 6 of the most exciting and finest reds on this year’s Nederburg Auction and taste them alongside their 2015 vintage. What impact does vintage have? At what age do you enjoy your wines? Which varieties age the best? Which regions proliferated in 2015? And is 2015 going to prove to be the greatest South African vintage? An interesting tasting that will hopefully answer a host of questions.

THE TUTORED TASTING WILL INCLUDE:

CHARITY AUCTION AND AUCTIONEER

The Charity Auction is a proud tradition of the annual Nederburg Auction. It is committed to investing in the futures of the people who make up the backbone of our local industry.

The incredible generosity of donors and buyers has ensured that the funds raised since 1993 have made tangible differences to people’s lives and their wider communities. Every year companies, producers and numerous auction supporters are requested to give generously. This year is no exception and we are incredibly proud and grateful for the unbelievable donations we have received in support of this year’s beneficiary.

The Charity Auction raised over R1 million in 2017, the highest amount achieved to date and is hoping to break this record in 2018.

Auctioneer: Roland PeensRoland is one of South Africa’s best-known wine personalities and will again be taking up the gavel for the annual Charity Auction in aid of this year’s beneficiary, The Nelson Mandela Foundation. Roland’s relentless enthusiasm in getting ‘top dollar’ for the auction beneficiary should keep bidders entertained to the very last lot.

A director at Wine Cellar (fine wine merchants and cellarers) for over 13 years, and an experienced wine merchant, Roland has been tremendously fortunate to taste many fine wines across the world. Roland’s passion for fine wines and travel puts him in the perfect position to maximise each Charity Auction item and raise much needed funds for this year’s beneficiary.

Conditions of Sale:

1. Anyone can participate in the charity auction. If you do not have a paddle, you may bid with a raised hand, but in the event that your bid is successful, you will be required to complete your details on a form that will be presented to you immediately after the bidding has concluded.

2. No split lots allowed. 3. All bids and final prices of products are exclusive of VAT. VAT will be added to the

final purchase amount. 4. Charity items purchased must be paid for on the day of the auction. The onus

is on the buyer to collect all items, other than barrel items, at the close of the Friday programme. (Items can be held by prior arrangement at registration until the purchaser departs for the day).

5. Proof of payment must be shown in order to collect items purchased in the

Charity Auction. 6. We do not endorse general container transportation or shipping and we cannot

be held liable for any damage that occurs. 7. No co-loads will be allowed. The Charity Auction runs independently of the main

Auction and items do not hold export documentation. 8. Once charity items are signed and paid for on Auction day, they become the

responsibility of the buyer. 9. Due to the rarity of the Charity Auction items, they should be handled with care. 10. The Charity Auction gives no warranty in respect of the quality of the products

and shall not be liable in respect thereof. 11. In the case of larger charity items, for example a bottle that is larger than a

magnum (1.5 L), which is purchased by a buyer who resides outside of South Africa, it is recommended that the buyer make arrangements to ship the item to the delivery address to ensure safe, secure delivery.

CHARITY AUCTION BENEFICIARY: THE NELSON MANDELA FOUNDATION

To mark the 100th birthday year of former President Nelson Mandela, the Nelson Mandela Foundation has been selected as this year’s beneficiary.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF) focuses its work on promoting dialogue as a vital instrument for addressing critical social issues and the most effective vehicle for sharing and growing memory, and for engaging it in the promotion of justice and social cohesion. This work is an attempt to find sustainable solutions to these critical social issues.

The Foundation is involved with Childhood Development programmes and will focus on programmes within the most disadvantaged communities in the Cape Winelands. Its partner of choice is the Centre for Early Childhood Development (CECD) – a non-profit organisation founded in 1994 and committed to putting young children first by ensuring quality early childhood development for our country’s youngest citizens. The Centre for Early Childhood Development is already doing a lot of work with the most disadvantaged communities in the Cape Winelands.

CECD’s early learning projects have had very positive impacts on the communities in which the centre works in that they have improved the knowledge of community members in areas such as Early Childhood Development (ECD) and the importance of early literacy and numeracy for young children to enable them to grow up as literate and numerate individuals. CECD’s projects increases both employment rates and awareness around the importance of an early education, as well as enhances ECD teachers’ abilities to teach young children in an effective manner. Many of the CECD’s projects have a focus on assisting parents in the communities in understanding the significance of ECD for their children and furthermore aim to enhance their ability to teach their children in their home environments.

The Foundation also works to ensure the people of the world have access to an integrated, dynamic and trusted resource on Nelson Mandela's legacy. This helps them to promote his vision and work by convening dialogues and creating platforms for engagement around critical social justice issues.

We ask all those attending the Charity Auction to open your hearts and wallets for the Nelson Mandela Foundation to support Nelson Mandela’s dream, vision and legacy by helping to create a Madiba in every generation.

CHARITY AUCTION ITEMS

ITEM 1 Estimated Value: R25,000

Nederburg Sweet Wine Tribute to Nelson Mandela, Robben Island Excursion including lunch at the V&A Waterfront

12 x 375ml, excursion and lunch for 8 guests donated by Nederburg

A carefully cellared collection of 12 x 375ml bottles of two of Nederburg’s iconic dessert wines: 6 x Edelkeur 1991 and 6 x Eminence 1994, signed by legendary winemaker Günter Brözel, Nederburg cellar-master for 33 years (from 1956 to 1989). This lot also includes a private tour of the historic Robben Island, off the Cape Town coast, for eight guests, and a gourmet lunch at the V&A Waterfront featuring some award-winning Nederburg wines. The innovation for which Brözel is best remembered was the introduction to South Africa of botrytis or noble late harvest wines. His renowned Edelkeur, made from botrytised Chenin Blanc, gave rise to the Nederburg Auction and was to become the benchmark against which all other South African and many internationally dessert wines would be judged. According to those in the know, Edelkeur was one of former South African president Nelson Mandela’s favoured wines. The 1991 vintage of Edelkeur, now 27 years old, that forms part of this tribute collection, pays homage to the 27 years Nelson Mandela spent in prison, 18 of which at Robben Island

Eminence, a natural sweet wine also conceived by Brözel and as highly acclaimed as Edelkeur, was named to reflect the stature of the pope, and a case of the wine was in fact sent to His Eminence The Pope in the 1990s in the hope of receiving a blessing. Now 24 years of age, the 1994 vintage of this wine, made from Muscat du Frontignan, makes reference to the elections held in South Africa on 27 April 1994 which saw Nelson Mandela become the first democratically elected President of the country.

Fun fact: In 1972 Nederburg entered the 1969 Nederburg Edelkeur in an international wine competition in Budapest – and was judged best wine at the show.

The 40-year-old Bordeaux Collection from 1978

6 x 750ml donated by Distell Tabernacle

This 40-year-old Bordeaux collection includes wines from some of the most prestigious Bordeaux Château’s including one each of: • Château Figeac (Saint-Émilion appellation) • Château Batailley (Pauillac appellation) • Château Palmer (Margaux appellation) • Château Mouton Rothschild (Pauillac appellation) • Château Haut-Bailly (Pessac-Léognan appellation) • Château Gisccours (Margaux appellation).

1978 Bordeaux wine earned the sobriquet of the “miracle vintage” from the famous wine writer and personality Harry Waugh. The vintage was awarded its title because throughout the entire growing season, winemakers all over Bordeaux were expecting the worst. Yet, thanks to a perfect September, the vintage produced several fine examples of 1978 Bordeaux wine.

Van Ryn’s 27-year-old Tribute Blend Brandy

3 x 750ml donated by Van Ryn’s

This unique brandy, a 27-year-old tribute blend to Nelson Mandela, represents the 27 years Nelson Mandela spent in prison.

Exceptional elegance is expressed in this uniquely crafted single potstill brandy. A symphony of dried fruit, spice, vanilla and dark chocolate on the nose with delicate marzipan and sweet tobacco notes. 27 years of elegance in the making and worth waiting for. Warm and appealing, an even balance is perfectly displayed.

The legacy of founder Jan van Ryn lives on in this beautifully crafted, double distilled potstill brandy. The brandy is matured at the Van Ryn’s distillery, founded over 100 years ago on the outskirts of Stellenbosch on the banks of the Eerste River. It is home to the largest Cooperage in the southern hemisphere where a handful of skilled artisans tenderly repair and maintain the French oak barrels imported from Limousin in France in preparation to mature the elegant spirit of Van Ryn’s range of world’s best brandies.

Nederburg 6 Decades of Cabernet Sauvignon

6 x 750ml, donated by Nederburg

Cellar-master Andrea Freeborough has chosen a venerable line-up of wines spanning an incredible six decades, not only to highlight Nederburg’s proficiency in the making of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon, but also as a tribute to those winemaking luminaries who have gone before her, including Günter Brözel, Newald Marais and Razvan Macici. The selection, presented in a wooden case, comprises Nederburg Auction/Private Bin Cabernet Sauvignon from the 1966, 1974, 1985, 1991, 2003 and 2013 vintages. The majority of these feature grapes sourced exclusively from Paarl vines. “The older wines are testimony to the longevity of Nederburg Cabernets and the younger wines are an expression of the same pedigree of finesse, harmony and potential to endure for many decades more,” Freeborough explains.

Of particular significance is the 1974 vintage, ranked by international winemaking icon Robert Mondavi as one of his top 10 red wines, when he delivered the keynote address at the Nederburg Auction in 1992. The 2013 vintage is also considered very special. It earned the Arcadia Trophy for the best Cabernet Sauvignon at the IWSC in 2016, the same year the winery was highlighted by the judges of the competition as the South African Wine Producer of the Year. It’s been awarded double gold and gold medals at various other local and international competitions, and is rated five stars in the 2017 edition of Platter’s South African Wine Guide. Nederburg was also announced the Winery of the Year in this issue. A rare collector’s item for its archival value alone, these wines will be an exhilarating experience.

The collection also represents some other interesting stories…On 28 September 1966, three months after Stellenbosch Farmers’ Winery had assumed ownership of Nederburg, the winery won 15 first prizes, six cups and the gold medal for the most points gained at the Western Province Wine Show of that year, thus bringing its total number of awards in 24 years to 202 first prizes, 136 cups and 12 gold medals. This was not all: in 1966 Nederburg’s wines had been awarded nine diplomas when they were exhibited at Ljubljana in Yugoslavia, an indication that at last South African wines were being accepted and appreciated in Europe.

In 1974, South Africa’s Anneline Kriel was crowned Miss South Africa, as well as Miss World. She modeled the latest in designer fashion at the 2004 Nederburg Auction. A decade of the annual Nederburg Auction was celebrated in 1985, together with cellar-master Günter Brözel’s incredible achievement in being the first in South Africa to be named ‘Winemaker of the Year’ at the 1985 International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC).

In 1991, the 1986-sanctions imposed on South Africa by the United States came to an end, beckoning a new dawn for the local wine industry, opening up international trade, as well as the hearts and minds of winemakers. The benefits of the broader context were clearly seen in subsequent years with massive viticulture improvements to better reflect terroir, and more innovative winemaking techniques and styles. The 2003 vintage reflects a time at Nederburg when the talented Razvan Macici, born in Romania to a winemaking family, was well on his way in successfully exploring new possibilities and tastes. He experimented widely with wood, most notably Eastern European oak for greater complexity, structure and finesse, as can be observed in the 2003 vintage of Nederburg’s Private Bin Cabernet Sauvignon, matured for 24 months in a combination of new Hungarian, French and American oak barrels. The 2013 vintage showcases Nederburg’s voice and confidence with a new generation of individual, expressive wines made under the visionary leadership of Macici. He continued his quest to add more interesting dimensions to the cellar’s wines up until 2015 when he handed over the reins to current cellar-master, Andrea Freeborough. The greater accent placed on individual berry sorting and manual fermentation with the use of open fermenters, leading to optimal extraction of colour, tannin and flavour, is evident in the 2013 expression of Nederburg’s Private Bin Cabernet Sauvignon.

This incredible collection from one of Napa Valley’s most acclaimed and influential winemakers of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon includes 6 x Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignons from 1978.

In the 1970s, Robert Mondavi was a powerhouse. California critics lauded him for bringing new techniques from Bordeaux and elsewhere, and imagined a limitless horizon for Mondavi and his sons. A typical piece in Clifton Fadiman and Sam Aaron’s The Joys of Wine, published in 1975, rhapsodized, “Robert Mondavi’s Cabernet Sauvignon is often served at the White House and at dinners given by the State Department. This stamp of approval and the accompanying publicity have made it the single most sought-after red wine of the Western Hemisphere.

Auction fact: Robert Mondavi delivered the keynote address at the Nederburg Auction in 1992.

Singita / Klein Constantia Vin de Constance Collection

6 x 500ml, donated by Singita Conservation Company and Klein Constantia Estate

6 bottles of a straight vertical Vin de Constance 2004 to 2009

Two of South Africa’s leading brands, Singita and Klein Constantia have come together to present a collection of vintages of the iconic Klein Constantia Vin de Constance. The rare collection comes from Singita’s fine and extensive cellar. Ranging from the 2004 vintage to the multi award winning 2009 vintage, voted in Wine Spectator’s top 10 wines for 2016, this 6-bottle case is the ultimate wine collector’s dream lot.

Singita is dedicated to environmentally conscious hospitality, sustainable conservation and the empowerment of local communities. Singita meaning “place of miracles”, was founded in 1993 with a single lodge, Singita Ebony Lodge. Today Singita is the trusted guardian of a million acres of pristine land in Africa and is responsible for making tangible differences in the lives of the people living and working in and around its lodges. Singita proudly operates 12 luxury award-winning lodges and camps, each a unique experience in its own right, in five regions across three countries in Africa.

In partnership with non-profit Funds & Trusts who implement strategic conservation projects in each region, Singita is preserving and protecting pristine land and wildlife populations, and helping to create economic independence within local communities surrounding the reserves.

The Klein Constantia Vin de Constance vertical of vintages, still available for Singita guests during their lodge stays, is representative of the dedicated fine SA wine purchasing and maturation programme based in the Cape Winelands, established to offer genuine provenance and mature wine enjoyment.

Kings vied for possession of this wine; Louis Philippe sent emissaries from France to fetch it; Napoleon drank it on the island of St Helena to find solace in his lonely exile; Frederick the Great and Bismarck ordered it; and the English Prime Minister – who had sampled it with much delight at Downing Street – made sure that regular consignments from the Cape were delivered to Buckingham Palace for the King.

www.singita.com | www.kleinconstantia.com

“The sweet, luscious and excellent dessert wine called Constantia” soon became part of the literature of the 19th century. In Edwin Drood, Charles Dickens tells of “…the support embodied in a glass of Constantia and a home-made biscuit”, while Jane Austen recommends that her forsaken heroine try a little Constantia for “…its healing powers on a disappointed heart”. A German poet, Klopstock, devoted an entire ode to the pleasures of this sweet wine, while Baudelaire transformed it into a sensuous image for his great brooding poem “Les Fleurs du Mal”.
