FOREWORD BY DR. JOE VITALE

Where is your mind right now? I don’t mean where isit located within you (which is an interesting ques-tion in itself); but what is your mind focused on

right now? Exactly where is it?

I learned a long time ago that my mind will go wherever Iaim it. This shouldn’t be any surprise to you. As I explained inthe movie The Secret, the Law of Attraction states that you will

get more of whatever you focus on. For exam-ple, focus on lack and you get more lack.Focus on good and you’ll get more good.

Most of us let our minds go to whateverpops up and grabs our attention. We don’texert our control. In that respect, we’re notmuch smarter than crows. Move a flashyobject and we look.

And when we do make a choice on what topay attention to, we don’t always do it in themost efficient manner. You may choose todiet, and you may focus your mind on achiev-ing a healthy lifestyle, but as soon as you seea donut, you cave. So how do you escape this rut?

Good question.

And that’s what this little gem of a book is all about: Asking

the right questions. Ask the wrong question and you can staystuck in the mud. Ask the right question and you can see choic-es you never noticed before. It’s all in how you operate yourown mind.

Noah is an expert in this area. I’ve known him for years now.I first heard of Noah when a reader of some of my own bookssaid I needed to check him out. I did, and liked what I saw.

Then he came to visit me at my estate one day. We had anexhilarating afternoon. Noah’s sincerity and boyish curiosityabout life’s mysteries, as well as his humbleness about his dis-covery of the right question, kept me engaged throughout thefew hours we spent together. We became fast friends andremain so today.

Noah comes from his heart and sincerely wants to awakenpeople to their own inner power.

And he does it through the magic of a question.

Not just any question, but a question designed to awakensomething miraculous within you – easily, naturally, and play-fully.

I wonder how many miracles you will experience whilereading this book?

Enjoy!

HOW THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN – AND WHY

id you ever notice how the best ideas come to you in the shower?

It happens all the time – you’re minding your own business, holding the shampoo bottle – when suddenly, it hits you.

The idea that’s going to change everything.

The solution to the problem you’re facing.

The answer to the question you’ve been asking.

And it was right in front of you all along...

This book tells the story of what can happen to you whensomething like that happens to you!

April, 1997. A crisp spring morning like any other in NewEngland. I was living in a dorm room at the college where I wasa religious studies major.

The dorm room itself was sizableenough, in that, simply by standing in themiddle of the room, I could touch the wallson both sides.

At that point in my life – as a divorced30-year-old religious studies major living ina tiny dorm room of a baroque NewEngland college – I realized that somethingwas wrong, amazingly wrong, with my life.

At that point, I

Page 11: The Great Little Book of Afformations

I had been studying self-help books since I was a little boy, having pulled Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends andInfluence People off the shelf at age seven. (A well-meaningeditor told me to leave that story out of one of my previousbooks, because she told me no one would believe it!) Yet some-thing was missing. Something was gnawing at me, telling methat the answer I’d been seeking was somewhere out there –that I just had to keep looking for it.

Then, The Shower happened.

The night before, I’d been looking around my diminutivedorm room and realized that I had posted lots of sayings or“affirmations” around the room to make myself feel better;things like, “I am happy, healthy and wealthy” and “I am goodenough.”

Funny, but for some reason, I never quite believed what Ihad spent so much time saying to myself.

So, on the morning of The Shower, I was asking myselfsome simple but profound questions. Questions like:

“If I keep saying these ‘affirmations’ and have been sayingthem over and over for so long, why don’t I believe them?”

“If I’ve been saying positive statements to myself for years, how come I still don’t feel good about myself ?”

And: “There must be a better way to get myself to believesomething good about me. But what is it?”

That’s when it hit me. (No, not the soap.)

I realized that the human brain is always asking and search-ing for answers to questions. In that moment, I realized that

The Great Little Book of Afformations

Page 12: The Great Little Book of Afformations

12 NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D.

thought itself is the process of asking and searching for theanswers to questions.

If that’s true, I reasoned, then a simple question formed nat-urally in my mind – a simple question that changed everything.

The question was this:

“If human thought is really the process of asking andsearching for answers to questions, then why are we goingaround making statements we don’t believe?”

I couldn’t think of a good answer to that question.

That’s when everything changed for me – and for my tens ofthousands of Students (The Faithful) around the globe who’vesince learned how to apply what I discovered in The Shower. You’ll learn what happened next – and how you can benefitfrom my discovery – in the pages that follow.

TOP 10 WAYS TO GET THE MOST FROM THIS BOOK

A book should be luminous, not voluminous.

– Oliver Wendell Holmes

1. Read it through all at once.

This book is short on purpose. I know you’re busy. That’swhy I designed it to fit easily in your purse or briefcase. Youwon’t find any complex psychological theories here (well, justone – but I explain it pretty quickly and it’s easy to understand).

2. Set the book down and wonder.

Once you’ve read it through the first time, put it down for awhile. Take a walk. Let ideas come to you.

3. Highlight the passages that have special meaning toyou.

Did a certain phrase or question bring up strong feelings inyou? Underline or highlight those passages so you can refer tothem later. Also, write the date next to the text you’ve highlight-ed, so that each time you revisit this book, you’ll see just howfar you’ve come.

Page 15: The Great Little Book of Afformations

NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D. 15

4. Use the questions in this book to guide you, but don’t feel limited by them.

In Chapter 3, you’ll learn how to create empowering ques-tions of your own. Remember, you are creating your life rightnow by the questions you’re asking – why not make them workin your favor?

5. Teach this technique twice.

We all learn better when we teach.Research suggests that when you teach thismethod at least twice in the next 48 hours –once to your loved ones and once to yourbusiness colleagues – not only will you per-sonally be better able to apply this teaching, you’ll also be socially committed to theteaching, which will make it that much hard-er for you to go back to the old, disempower-ing way of thinking.

6. Allow the method to be as simple as it is.

Many of our Students at my seminars feel a little embar-rassed, because sometimes it doesn’t feel like you’re doing any-thing!

Yes, you often need to work hard and sacrifice to get whatyou want. But consider that many of the most important thingsin the world – love, peace, serenity – often appear, not becausewe work hard at them, but because we allow them.

We learn betterwhen

7. Yet, don’t be fooled by how easy this method appears.

The Faithful – my tens of thousands of Students with whomI’ve shared The Afformations Method – have told me that thisprocess has changed their lives in ways both immediate andlong-lasting.

But just because it’s easy doesn’t mean you don’t have to doanything. You WILL have to change many of the things you’vebeen thinking and saying to yourself, perhaps for most of yourlife.

The Afformations Method will work just as well for you as ithas for The Faithful, if you trust yourself and trust the Method.

8. Do the exercises in the book.

You can’t do 20 push-ups merely by reading a book abouthow to do it. You have to roll up your sleeves and do it. You’llfind that the benefits of doing the simple exercises I prescribewill far outweigh the pain of having done them. Really.

9. Write and share your experiences with us.

I love to read your success stories! Write and share themwith me. My staff and I are also here to help any time you havequestions. Just visit SuccessClinic.com for more information.

10.Finally, remember your job on Earth is to serve othersand be blessed in the process.

Chapter 1.

WHY TRADITIONAL “AFFIRMATIONS”

DON’T ALWAYS WORK AS ADVERTISED

Every sentence I utter must be understood not as an affirmation, but as a question.

– Niels Bohr, Nobel Prize winning physicist

Have you ever wanted to change your life? If you wantmore control over your business, more money toenjoy the fruits of your labor, or more freedom to do

the things you really want to do, the answer is almost certainly“yes.”

Well, if you wanted to change your life, what have you triedto do differently? If you’re like many people, you may havetried:

• Beginning a new diet/exercise program

• Reading self-help books

• Listening to self-improvement CDs or tapes

• Working on your communication skills

• Writing your goals

Why Traditional “Affirmations” Don’t Always Work As Advertised

Page 19: The Great Little Book of Afformations

NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D. 19

• Trying to get support from your spouse

• Writing or saying “affirmations”

Hey, what’s that last one! A great many of us have triedusing “affirmations” to change our lives – but the questions is:why?

Because that’s what a lot of very successful people have toldyou to do. For decades, many very successful people have builtfortunes persuading you and me and millions of others aboutthe importance of using “affirmations” to change your life.

The second question we should be asking when it comes to“affirmations” is: do they really work?

The answer is: sometimes.

Wouldn’t it be helpful to know what actually makes “affir-mations” work – and what makes them sometimes NOT work?

HOW THE HUMAN MIND WORKS

Consider this: the human mind has created every work ofart, poetry, science, religion, philosophy, mathematics, history, and romance that has ever existed. Here are just a few of thethings you can do with your wonderful mind:

Arrange, blueprint, chart, construct, create, design, devise, discover, dream up, engineer, evoke, fabricate, fashion, form, frame, generate, hatch, imagine, improvise, invent, lead, manipulate, make up, mastermind, originate, produce, pro-voke, plan, plot, prepare, rig, scheme, shape, spark, think, throw together, whip up, work out.

The Great Little Book of Afformations

Page 20: The Great Little Book of Afformations

20 NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D.

Isn’t that amazing? And you can do all that before breakfast!

We often think of ourselves as being static, fixed, unchang-ing beings: “I am what I am and that’s that.” But think a newthought for a moment. Have you ALWAYS been that way? Wereyou the way you are now when you first learned to walk...firstlearned to ride a bicycle...went to your first day ofschool...opened your first bank account...went on your firstdate...had your first child?

All of these stages in life meant one thing: CHANGE. Youhad to accept a new reality when you went from crawling towalking...from being dependent on your parents to being inde-pendent...from working for someone else to starting your ownbusiness!

So your life really is the process of changing from one set ofcircumstances to another (hopefully better) set of circum-stances.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting...

WHAT THE TRADITIONAL SUCCESS TEACHERS TOLD YOU

What is an “affirmation”? Simply put, an affirmation is astatement of something you’d like to be true in your life.

William James, often called the father of modern psycholo-gy, has been widely quoted as saying, “The greatest discoveryof my generation is that anyone can alter their lives by altering

Why Traditional “Affirmations” Don’t Always Work As Advertised

Page 21: The Great Little Book of Afformations

NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D. 21

their attitudes of mind.” What’s rarely pointed out, however, isthat since William James died in 1910, that means several gen-erations have had the chance to “alter” their lives by changingtheir thoughts.

Your thoughts are very literal seedsthat you plant every minute of every hourof every day, whether you’re aware of itor not. These thought-seeds are planted(whether or not you’re aware of them) inthe fertile soil of Infinite Intelligence, which simply takes your thought-seedsand hands them back to you as Your Life.

You would think, then, with the mil-lions of self-help books published thatsupport this notion, that by now we’d allknow how to change our lives simply bychanging our attitudes of mind.

All you have to do is look around youto see that, unfortunately, that’s not exact-ly the case. Yet.

The question is...

Why not?

WHAT TRADITIONAL SUCCESS TEACHERS FORGOT TO TELL YOU

Let’s say you’re having trouble with money and you’d like to

The Great Little Book of Afformations

T

Your thoughts are

seeds thatyou plant

everyminute ofevery day,whether

you know it or not.

T

Page 22: The Great Little Book of Afformations

22 NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D.

change that. (Actually, the only “trouble” with money is thatyou have some, and everyone else has all the rest!) And let’ssay that you’ve been raised on the traditional method justdescribed, which says that in order to change your life, youmust first change your thoughts.

Makes sense so far. You know and realize the truth of thestatement, “As you sow, so shall you reap,” the fact thatthoughts are the seeds you plant.

And let’s say that you went back to your childhood and real-ized that you grew up experiencing lack, and identified that thethought that’s holding you back is, “I don’t have enough.”

Now that you’ve identified the main thought that’s beenholding you back, you realize that your next step is to changethat thought. In other words, you want to stop planting nega-tive thought-seeds (what you don’t want) and start plantingpositive thought-seeds (what you want).

So now you begin to do what the traditional success teach-ers have been telling you: start using “affirmations” or positivestatements. Why? Because you’re trying to change yourthoughts, and naturally the way to do that is to say, write orthink different statements – changing the negative to positive.

So, to combat the negative thought-seed of “I don’t haveenough,” you begin saying, writing and thinking the positivethought-seed of “I have enough” or even, “I am rich.”

And, because you’re such a good student, you do this overand over and over...which would change your attitude, whichwould change your results, which would mean your moneyproblems are over!

Why Traditional “Affirmations” Don’t Always Work As Advertised

Page 23: The Great Little Book of Afformations

NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D. 23

Right?

~ ~ ~

All right, let’s try it.

Say to yourself right now, “I am rich.”

Say it again.

“I am rich.”

What just happened in your mind?

Did you hear something else in there?

A voice... a voice that said something like...

“Yeah, right.”

Let me ask you a question – friend to friend:

Do you honestly believe your own “affirmations” – or doyou doubt them?

The plain and simple truth is that many of us doubt our own“affirmations.” Why? Because you’re trying to convince your-self of something you don’t believe is true.

Now, traditional success teachers realized that you may notbelieve that you are, in fact, rich and that you do, in fact, haveenough. So they told you, with very good intentions, that allyou had to do was repeat your “affirmations” a million kajilliontimes until, eventually, you believed them.

Have you ever realized you were holding onto a negative

The Great Little Book of Afformations

Page 24: The Great Little Book of Afformations

24 NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D.

thought (for example, “I’m poor, I’m lonely, I don’t haveenough”)...decided you wanted something better...wrote andsaid positive “affirmations” (for example, “I am rich, I’m happy,I have enough”)……

And then had...

Absolutely nothing happen?

Me too. And about a gazillion other people.

Why? If it were as easy as they said, why did nothing hap-pen? Were we simply incapable of thinking a positive thought? Were we not smart enough, not motivated enough, not educat-ed enough...or did we just not try hard enough?

Dear friend, the answer is none of these.

The answer is: you were using conscious statements whenyour subconscious mind responds to questions.

You were trying to overcome negative beliefs using state-ments, when it’s so much easier to overcome them using ques-tions.

You were telling when you should have been asking.

What on Earth do I mean?

AFFORMATIONS® –A NEW WAY TO ASK

POSITIVE QUESTIONS FOR GREATER RESULTS

I don’t pretend to have all the answers. But the questions are sure worth thinking about.

– Arthur C. Clarke, author of 2001: A Space Odyssey

Did you see what just happened? I ended the last chap-ter with something that made you curious: a question. The dictionary defines “question” as: “an expression

of inquiry that calls for a reply.” So when you ask yourself aquestion, what happens?

For example, right now, you may be asking yourself, “I don’tknow – what happens?”

Your mind automatically began Searching for an answer to your question.

WHAT EVERY PROBLEM YOU’LL EVER FACE REALLY IS

Do you know what every problem you’ll ever face is? We

The Great Little Book of Afformations

Page 26: The Great Little Book of Afformations

26 NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D.

typically fear, try to avoid, ignore, or get away from problems. But really, a problem is simply a question that hasn’t beenanswered yet.

Any problem, from the trivial to the tremendous, is really aquestion searching for an answer. Here are a few serious glob-al problems and their associated questions:

Global warming: “How can we stop destroying the Earthand still live the lives we want?”

Poverty: “How can we equally distribute the wealth of theworld so that people don’t have to go without the basic neces-sities of life?”

Unemployment: “How can we get everyone working in jobsthat produce wealth for themselves and help society functionbetter as well?”

(Notice I didn’t say these were easy questions. That’s whywe haven’t found all the answers yet!)

What about the problems people face on the personal orprofessional level?

Wanting to be more successful: “How can I be more suc-cessful in my life and business?”

Lack of organization: “Why can’t I find what I’m lookingfor?”

Wanting companionship: “Why can’t I meet the person ofmy dreams?”

If you’d like to change any of these, you could use the tradi-tional “affirmation” method by saying things like: “I am a suc-

Afformations® – A New Way To Ask Positive Questions For Greater Results

Page 27: The Great Little Book of Afformations

NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D. 27

cess, I am organized, I don’t procrastinate” and so on.

You may believe these statements, and you may not. Manypeople have responded to “affirmations” like these in a simplemanner: by not believing them (the “Yeah, right” response).

Now, if “affirmations” work for you, that’s great! If, howev-er, you’re not totally satisfied with the results, why not trysomething so simple, yet so powerful, that the traditionalteachers skipped right over it on the way to breakfast:

Rather than making a statement you may not believe, whynot ask yourself a question that can transform your life!

HOW YOU CREATE YOUR LIFE

The staggering realization I madein The Shower on that fateful morningin 1997 was that you are creating thereality of your life at this very momentin two ways: by the statements yousay to yourself and others, and by thequestions you ask yourselves and others.

Traditional success teachers havefocused a great deal of energy tellingyou to change your statements. Butuntil The Shower happened to me, noone had fully realized, or shown howto harness, the awesome power of

The Great Little Book of Afformations

T

You create yourreality by thestatementsyou say to

yourself andothers, and

by the questionsyou ask yourself

and others.T

Page 28: The Great Little Book of Afformations

what happens when you change the questions.

Your mind has what you might call an Automatic SearchFunction, which means that when you ask yourself a question, your mind automatically begins to Search for an answer.(Psychologists have referred to this function of the human brainas the “embedded presupposition factor.”)

The greatest teachers throughout history have taught thetruth of the statement, “As you sow, so shall you reap.” This isoften called The Law of Sowing and Reaping (Emerson called it“First Law”) or The Law of Attraction, which means that whatyou focus on (the thought-seeds you continually plant) willgrow and bear fruit.

As we’ve seen, traditional teachers told you to change yourthinking if you want to change your life. And that’s quite cor-rect.

What they said, however, was to change the statementsyou’re making, yet almost completely ignored the questionsyou’re asking.

Yet the Bible tells us, “You have not because you ask not,”and “Ask and you shall receive.”

If you only change the statements you say without changing the questions you ask, you’re missing out on one of the easiest,

yet most powerful ways to change your life that’s ever been discovered!

HOW A 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL CURED HER COMPULSIVE WORRYING

I got a call one day from Mary, a professional salespersonfrom Wisconsin who had attended one of our Secret Code ofSuccess workshops. The first words out of her mouth were,“Your work has been life-changing to me!” When I asked herwhat she meant, she told me the following story:

After attending your seminar and learning howto use Afformations, I realized that if it could workfor me, it could also work for my 13-year-olddaughter Stefanie. She’s a high achiever who getsall A’s in school, but she’s also a chronic and com-pulsive worrier.

Stefanie worried so much that she had severesleeping problems. She’d lay awake many nightsworrying, until finally she’d come into our bed-room and wake us from a sound sleep so we couldcomfort her.

We tried everything. We read to her. We prayedwith her. We were even considering taking her totherapy. Still the worrying – and the sleeplessnights – continued. She would cry and ask me,“Why do I worry so much?” It broke my heartbecause I couldn’t help my own daughter.

Finally, when I heard you teach Afformations at

The Great Little Book of Afformations

Page 30: The Great Little Book of Afformations

your seminar, I realized this could be the answer I’dbeen praying for! When I came back from yourseminar, I taught Stefanie how to use Afformations, and we talked for a long time about what questionswould make the most difference in her life.

She was as excited as I was! The questions wecame up with were:

“Why am I worry-free?”

“Why do I enjoy a full night’s sleep?

“Why do I put trust in God’s hands?”

“Why do all my friends love me?”

“Why do I love me?”

Now she’s a different kid!

From the very first day she started usingAfformations – it was truly miraculous, like turningon a dime! – Stefanie’s worrying stopped. She alsobecame much happier, more relaxed and seems tobe at peace in her own skin. And you know howhard that can be for teenagers nowadays – espe-cially teenage girls!

Your books were first self-help books I’ve everread where I actually did the exercises. Thank youfor making such a difference in our lives!

Mary then told me that not only did Afformations improveher own business and enable her daughter to quit worrying,

she also started sharing Afformations with everyone she met.

When her husband Scott told her that he wasn’t passionateabout his work, Mary began afforming, “Why is the right call-ing coming to Scott?” Within weeks, he landed his dream posi-tion. And get this: it was a job working at Stefanie’s highschool!

EMPOWERING vs. DISEMPOWERING QUESTIONS

Do you know what most people are doing with their lives? Most people are going through life asking negative questions –and wondering why they’re not getting the results they dreamof!

Let’s examine these empowering vs. disempowering ques-tions. We’ll start with disempowering questions, because whilethey’re the kind you may be used to, they’re also the ones youwant to get rid of immediately.

These are questions like, “Why am I so afraid? Why doesn’tanyone love me? How come I never get the breaks other peo-ple get?” No one says these questions on purpose, but youmay be asking them without knowing it.

Now I’d like you to try consciously asking these commondisempowering questions, and see how you feel: “Why don’t Ihave enough money? How come I’m so lonely? Why am I sucha loser? Why can’t I do anything right?”

As I explain in my weekend Secret Code of Success semi-nars, each of us has a Negative Reflection in our subconsciousmind – that negative “voice” that tells us we can’t do anythingright. The Negative Reflection always asks negative or disem-powering questions.

The ultimate result of these negative questions is that youwill manifest what you focus on. In other words, when you askyourself negative questions, you get negative results.

Use the space on the next page to list the five most disem-powering questions your Negative Reflection asks you on aregular basis.

Yes, I mean right now.

They may have come from someone in your past, or it couldbe something you made up on your own. It’s vital that youknow exactly what your own disempowering questions are, soyou can begin to turn them around. (Note: You might want towrite the date next to your questions, so when you come backto this book later, you’ll see just how far you’ve come.)

Please do this right now.

I’ll be right here when you get back.

EMPOWERING QUESTIONS –THE RIGHT QUESTIONS

Now that you’ve identified what your personal disempower-ing questions are, you may ask, “What are empowering ques-tions – and how can I start asking them instead of the negativeones?”

Glad you asked!

Empowering questions cause your mind to focus on thepositive. The only answers to empowering questions areanswers or experiences that produce feelings of self-esteemand a positive self-image! Empowering questions lead toanswers that tell the Truth about Who You Really Are.

Let’s change your disempowering questions on the previ-ous page to empowering questions. How do we do this? Simplyreverse the negative question to a positive! For example, if yourdisempowering question is, “Why am I such a loser?”, yourempowering question would be, “Why am I such a success?”

All right, grab your pen and get ready to experience the dif-ference. Here goes...

HOW AN INSURANCE SALESMAN WENT FROM $1,500 A MONTH

TO $120,000 A YEAR

Brandon, an insurance salesman from Utah, called ouroffices one day and I happened to pick up the phone. I liked himimmediately. He was warm, open and told me that he had spentover $30,000 on every self-help program under the sun – yet hewas still only making about $1,500 to $2,000 a month.

Brandon had heard about our Secret Code of Success pro-grams and decided to invest in the home-study materials weoffer.

Here’s what happened, in Brandon’s own words:

After spending over a decade and more than$30,000 on everything from books, tapes and sem-inars to actually becoming certified as an NLP prac-titioner, what has happened to me as a result ofusing Afformations is nothing short of amazing.

After going through Noah’s home-study materi-als just once, I realized that I was asking myself dis-empowering questions that were stopping mygrowth, like “Why can’t I get any new referrals?”

I immediately started asking myself positiveAfformations. First, I began asking, “Why do I getreferrals every day?” Within 4 days I had received9 new referrals to new clients – that was complete-ly unlike any numbers I had gotten in the past.

The Great Little Book of Afformations

Page 36: The Great Little Book of Afformations

36 NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D.

And the fun didn’t stop there!

I wrote a list of 150 different Afformations that Ibegan carrying around in my pocket.

My favorite? “Why is it so easy and so okay forme to have, do and be anything I want?”

Before I met Noah, my sales averaged between$1,500 and $2,000 a month. In the first month ofusing Noah’s program, my sales tripled.(Remember, these numbers are crunched by aninsurance company!)

By the end of the year, my personal income hadincreased by 560% and I was named Agent of theYear. This was in spite of going through a divorceand my grandmother passing away.

After that first year, I realized I was ready to getback into a relationship. So I began afforming:“Why am I so lucky to meet the perfect girl for meso quickly?”

In less than 40 days, I met a fantastic woman –but what’s truly miraculous is that if we’d met justone week earlier, I wouldn’t have been open tomeeting her, because I wanted someone over 21years old (I was 27 at the time) – and we met just 4days after her 21st birthday!

My advice? Do this work.

It can save you years of your life and manythousands of dollars!

WHY ARE THEY CALLED AFFORMATIONS?

Let’s return to what we’ve learned already: the human mindoperates by asking and answering questions. Therefore, whenyou ask yourself a question repeatedly, your mind must Searchfor an answer to your question.

I named this process of using empowering questions theuse of Afformations, or The Afformation Method. So where didthe word Afformation come from?

After my discovery in The Shower, I realized the process ofasking empowering questions was something that could com-pletely revolutionize the field of self-help and personal develop-ment.

I also realized that I had to come up with a word to describethe process of asking empowering questions, so people wouldbe able to fully understand the amazing power of their ownminds.

One of my favorite subjects in high school was Latin. (Yes, Iwas a geek long before they put the word “computer” in frontof it.)

After The Shower, I discovered that the word “affirmation”comes from the Latin word firmare, which means “to makefirm.” I began asking myself, “If ‘affirmations’ are positive newstatements, what would the perfect word thought be todescribe empowering questions?”

Then the answer came to me (of course!):

The Great Little Book of Afformations

Page 38: The Great Little Book of Afformations

38 NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D.

I realized that when we ask questions of ourselves or others– whether positive or negative – we are really FORMING newthought patterns, which can FORM a new life for us.

The word “form” comes from the Latin word formare, which means “to form or give shape to.”

That’s when it hit me: what if you’re making somethingFIRM, but in the wrong FORM?

It was at that moment that I realized the real reason “affir-mations” aren’t very effective for changing our lives – becausewe’re trying to make something FIRM before we’ve FORMEDwhat we really want.

I realized that instead of making something FIRM, we need-ed to FORM questions that would change the thought-seeds wewere sowing, which would change our lives.

And that’s how the word – and the teaching of – AFFORMA-TIONS® was born.

(By the way, it’s perfectly legitimate to invent a new word todescribe a new way of looking at the universe. For example, remember the first time you heard the words Internet, CD-ROM,or even software? Just a few short years ago, these words hadno meaning because the technology they describe didn’t exist. There was no context for the words; no context, no meaning. Now you use those terms every day. In this book, I’m teachingyou a new technology of the mind – hence, AFFORMATIONS: anew word to describe a new technology.)

THE BOTTOM LINE:YOU’RE ALREADY DOING THIS!

In case you’re still wondering if this works, or thinking thisis the nuttiest thing you’ve ever heard, let us offer you one finalfact:

You are already using AFFORMATIONS

all the time anyway.

Thoughts like “Why am I so stupid?” or “Why can’t I do any-thing right?” are simply negative Afformations! These ques-tions are really the Negative Reflection forming itself insideyour mind, thereby forming your very life.

Once, during one of our Secret Code of Success seminars inVirginia, a young couple came up to me, literally jumping upand down with excitement! They said they’d heard me speakabout afformations at the annual Mary Kay Seminar in Dallas, where over 50,000 business professionals from around theworld come to learn from some of the world’s best speakers.

Here’s their story:

At your workshop, we heard you explain howto use afformations to change your life. We’dbeen doing “affirmations” for the past four yearsjust as we were instructed: we made “affirma-

tion” tapes, said them to one another, placedthem on our refrigerator, even hung “affirmation”signs in the shower. Well, all we got was a bunchof wet words.

After hearing you speak about Afformations atyour workshop, we were very excited. We real-ized the power of asking ourselves empoweringquestions and letting our minds Search for theanswers. We started to use Afformations in exact-ly the same way we’d been using traditional“affirmations”: we asked each other our newquestions, placed them on our refrigerator, andtalked about our new Afformations day after day.

The results were absolutely amazing! Weheard you speak at Seminar in July. By August,we realized we were doing a lot of things differ-ently because of the Afformations we were using. And in September, we qualified for our first PinkCadillac! After more than four years of using tra-ditional “affirmations” with little to show for it,we got the exact results we wanted in less than3 months using Afformations.

This professional couple had been very committed to usingthe traditional method. They’d even said “affirmations” outloud to one another – now that’s commitment! Yet “affirma-tions” simply didn’t enable them to overcome their negativesubconscious beliefs.

Using Afformations, their minds began to Search for new, creative ways to find solutions to their problems. And theresults spoke for themselves.

The power to create your life using Afformations lies withinyou and your miraculous, marvelous mind. You’re alreadyusing them anyway...why not do it consciously to create the lifeyou want, rather than unconsciously creating a life you don’twant?

By the way, if you still doubt the power of Afformations, there is a sentence eleven letters long that represents the gen-esis of every work of art, science, philosophy, and religion inhuman history.

If you are still not sure whether Afformations will work foryou, here are the eleven letters that have, in a very real sense, created human history:

“Why am I alive?”

Chapter 3.

HOW TO CREATE AFFORMATIONS THAT CAN

CHANGE YOUR LIFE

Take the attitude of a student:never be too big to ask questions,

never know too much to learn something new.– Og Mandino

Author of The Greatest Salesman in the World

Creating empowering Afformations can be one of themost significant steps you’ll ever take to gain morecontrol over your business, raise your self-confidence,

improve your personal relationships, or enjoy a deeper rela-tionship with God. Use the following four steps to create pow-erful Afformations that will help you use your mind to createthe life you really want:

Step 1: Identify what you want and write it down.

You’ve probably done this before. In this step, you may goback to goals you’ve previously written and determine what it

How To Create Afformations That Can Change Your Life

Page 43: The Great Little Book of Afformations

NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D. 43

is you really want, or start from scratch. You decide.

This little book is organized into the 10 major areas of life –from Wealth & Money to Health to Self-Confidence to Life &Happiness. Go through each category and determine what youreally want.

(Please note that traditional success literature stops righthere! Traditional success teachers have told you to set yourgoals and then say “affirmations” that attempt to convinceyour brain that you “will have” or even that you “do have”what you want. While this can also work, The AfformationsMethod makes reaching your goals so much easier, because ituses your mind’s Automatic Search Function to discover posi-tive answers to your new, empowering questions.)

So, for example, you might decide that your goal is to behappy, healthy and wealthy (hard to imagine anyone NOTwanting those things!). So in Step One, you would write: “Iwant to be happy, healthy and wealthy.”

Now we go to the essential step...

Step 2: Form your desire into a question that assumes that

what you want is already true.

In Step 2, you start asking a question that assumes thatwhat you want is already so, has already happened, or isalready true!

The Great Little Book of Afformations

Page 44: The Great Little Book of Afformations

44 NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D.

This is the most essential step to create empowering Afformations that can change your life!

In the example above, what you want is to be happy, healthyand wealthy, right? Well, in this step you ask yourself WHY thisis already so!

Your Life is a reflection of thethought-seeds you plant and give ener-gy to. More precisely, Your Life is areflection of the unconscious assump-tions you make about life and your rela-tionship to it.

For example, if you grew up in anenvironment where there wasn’t a lotof money, and your family made youaware that the lack of money was thecause of their unhappiness, you mightconclude that there’s a lack of money inthe world that leads to unhappiness, and that’s just the way life is. If youcould find a mechanism that couldrecord your subconscious thought-seeds and play them back to you, theymight sound something like this:

“Why am I so unhappy? Why don’t I have enough? Why amI so lonely? Why aren’t more successful?”, and so forth.

Well, a mechanism does exist that records and reflects your subconscious thought-seeds – that mechanism is calledYour Life!

How To Create Afformations That Can Change Your Life

T

There’s a mechanism that records and reflects

your subconsciousthoughts andbeliefs. That mechanism

is called Your Life.

T

Page 45: The Great Little Book of Afformations

NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D. 45

WHAT YOUR LIFE IS

So here you are, asking yourself these often negative ques-tions. What do you think would be the answers to the negativequestions in the example above?

The answers would be your life showing up as the negativeresults of the negative questions you’ve been asking. For exam-ple:

If you’ve been asking, “Why am I so unhappy?”, you’ll getthe answer as your unhappy life.

If you’ve been asking, “Why don’t I have enough?”, theanswer will appear as your lack in life.

If you’ve been asking, “Why am I so lonely?”, the person ofyour dreams will keep not showing up.

REVERSING THE CURSE

When you do this step of The Afformation Method, you willtake what has been subconscious (hidden) and make it con-scious (visible), and take what is negative (disempowering) andmake it positive (empowering).

Let’s reverse all the negative questions from the last page. The reverse might look something like this:

Why am I so happy?

Why do I have enough?

Why am I so loved?

The Great Little Book of Afformations

Page 46: The Great Little Book of Afformations

46 NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D.

These questions may seem unfamiliar to you right now. Butwhat if you allowed yourself to accept those questions as thetruth about your life?

Wouldn’t you have a life that’s different than the averageperson’s – a life that’s different from the one you have now?

Your quality of life depends on just two things:

the quality of your communication with the world inside yourself,

and the quality of your communication with the world

outside yourself.

Step 2 of The Afformations Method is to begin to change thequality of communication with the world inside yourself. Youwill begin to ask yourself new, better, empowering questions, and stop asking yourself negative, disempowering questions.

This is the fastest, most effective way I’ve ever seen toimmediately change the quality of your communication withboth your inside and outside worlds.

So Step 2 in The Afformation Method is to ask yourself,“Why is [what I want] true in my life now?”

Using our example above, you would ask yourself, “Whyam I so happy, healthy and wealthy?”

How To Create Afformations That Can Change Your Life

Page 47: The Great Little Book of Afformations

NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D. 47

Step 3: Let your mind Search for the answers to your question.

The point of Afformations is NOT to answer the questionyou are presenting! The point of Afformations is to begin to useyour mind in a new way – to begin focusing on things you maynever have focused on before.

I got the following letter from my friend John Adams of TheGolden Key Ministry in Phoenix...

Dear Noah,

I want to tell you a true story about my friendsSam and Shirley, two people I had taught TheAfformations Method to aboutthree years ago when I first readyour Afformations book.

Shirley had been accepted intothe ministerial program at Unity inMissouri, so they planned to selltheir home and move to KansasCity. They put their home on themarket in early April with noresults. People would come andlook but no one was buying.

On Saturday, May 5, Sam andShirley told me about their lack ofa buyer for their home.

The Great Little Book of Afformations

T

They began asking,

“Why is this house now

easily sold to the right

party for the right price?”

T

Page 48: The Great Little Book of Afformations

48 NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D.

Because they needed to leave in early June, they were getting nervous and wanted my advice.I suggested they go through every room in theirhome, bless it, and begin afforming, “Why is thishouse now easily sold to the right party for theright price?”.

That was Saturday. The next afternoon, a cou-ple came and looked at the house. On Tuesday, they made an offer which was too low. Sam &Shirley kept their Afformation going and made ahigher, counter offer which was accepted onTuesday afternoon!

Everything went through quickly and the dealclosed on May 31st. Sam & Shirley are on theirway to Missouri as true believers!

Your mind is like a computer. Once you put yourAfformation in motion (and keep asking your new, positivequestions!), your mind will begin to Search for the answer with-out your conscious volition.

Which brings us to the fourth essential step of TheAfformations Method – the one you must do if you want thismethod to work for you...

Step 4: Take new ACTIONS based on your new assumptions about life!

How To Create Afformations That Can Change Your Life

Page 49: The Great Little Book of Afformations

NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D. 49

You are, right now, making assumptions about life and yourrelationship to it. These assumptions form the basis of how yougo through life – with positivity or negativity, confidence or shy-ness, love or fear, acceptance or resentment.

If you assume that life is for you, you will take actionsformed by the belief that “things will work out for the best.” Ifyou assume that life is against you, then your actions will beformed from hesitancy, fear and the belief of why bother?”

The Afformation Method makes conscious that which has,

until now, been only subconscious.

For example, a confident person will have an easier time inlife, whether building relationships or building a business. Butwhere does confidence really come from? It comes from theunderlying, subconscious assumptions about how life is goingto treat you.

You are continually forming assumptions about life andyour relationship to it; but these assumptions are nearly alwayssubconscious – so hidden, you don’t even realize they’re there.

As a result, the great percentage of your actions are gov-erned by assumptions you may have formed years – evendecades – ago!

If you grew up with the assumption that “life is lack”, whatwould your actions be? How confident would you be aboutbuilding your business or meeting new people?

Now what if you were Donald Trump and grew up in the lap

The Great Little Book of Afformations

Page 50: The Great Little Book of Afformations

50 NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D.

of luxury? What would your subconscious assumptions aboutlife be?

Probably something like, “I can have whatever I want” or“There’s plenty of money out there, and I have the ability to getit.” In other words, you’d probably believe the statement:“There’s more than enough wealth to go around.”

As you can see, someone who believes that “life is lack” isgoing to do things (take actions) that spring from that assump-tion. And you can also see that someone like Donald Trump, who grew up with great wealth, is going to literally live in a dif-ferent universe than the individual who believes “life is lack.”

I am not espousing Donald Trump’s lifestyle; nor do I believethe purpose of life is to gain money or possessions. I am sim-ply pointing out that your internal, subconscious assumptionsare going to form the very essence of how you walk throughlife.

Remember, the point of The Afformation Method is not tofind “the answer” to your questions. Since you are now goingto be forming positive questions that assume that what youwant is already true, your mind will work to find a way to makeit so.

Can you see how this process must, by definition, changeyour life?

HOW YOU’LL KNOW WHEN IT’S WORKING

The question I get most often about Afformations is: “Howwill I know when it’s working?” (This question, by the way, typ-

Page 51: The Great Little Book of Afformations

NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D. 51

ically comes from people who haven’t tried it consciously yet.)Many people who start using afformations report an almostinstant feeling of calm and peace of mind.

However, the Afformations Method isbased on science, not magic. You cannotask yourself, “Why am I so thin andhealthy?” while continuing to eatunhealthy foods, and expect to loseweight. You cannot break the Laws of theUniverse by sowing positive questions andcontinuing to do negative or self-defeatingbehaviors, and expect to get what youwant.

The point of Afformations is not to tryand trick your mind, but to use it properly!

As we’ve noted, you’re already usingthis method anyway, but most people areusing it unconsciously, in a negative orself-defeating way.

Use Afformations, but don’t worryabout doing them “right.” There’s more

going on in the subconscious mind than science will ever beaware of. But using conscious afformations will enable yourmind’s Automatic Search Function to produce remarkableresults in your favor, rather than negative ones you don’t want.

Chapter 4.

AFFORMATIONS ON HEALTH & WELL-BEING

It’s no longer a question of staying healthy. It’s a question of finding a sickness you like.

– Jackie Mason, comedian

It’s been said that if you don’t have your health, it doesn’treally matter what else you do have. Mark Twain oncesaid, “I am an old man and have known a great many trou-

bles, but most of them never happened.”

Many people have set up beliefs in their minds like, “If Ihave a good day/lose weight/achieve my health goals, it’s a mir-acle” or even “Why bother? I’ll never be healthy again.” Canyou see that, when you’re sowing these disempoweringthought-seeds, all your attempts to lose weight or achieve yourhealth goals won’t amount to much?

We begin the Afformations section of this book with thesubject of Health for precisely that reason. It’s one of the mostimportant things on everyone’s minds, yet one of the most elu-sive concepts.

One of my Students used to use an “affirmation” poster forher health goals, which included statements like, “I am healthyand skinny.”

Did she lose weight? Yes, and then gained it right back

The Great Little Book of Afformations

Page 54: The Great Little Book of Afformations

again! Since switching to Afformations, shesays that the weight has stayed off and thatAfformations have helped her reach herweight-loss and fitness goals. She long agoreplaced her “affirmation” poster with anAfformation poster – with definite results.

What’s your definition of “health”? Is it just“the absence of sickness”? I don’t know aboutyou, but there seems like a big difference tome between being healthy and being not-sick.

I invite you to use these Afformations as jumping-off pointsto examine your internal beliefs about achieving your health orweight-loss goals – to strengthen your positive beliefs andremove your negative ones. Happy asking!

Why do I take responsibility for my health?

Why are healthy people so magnetically drawn to me?

AFFORMATIONS ON WEALTH & MONEY

The question isn’t at what age I want to retire, it’s at what income.

– George Foreman, entrepreneur and grillmaster

Whoever said that money doesn’t buy happinessobviously didn’t know where to shop. Seriously, ifthere’s one area where people are holding onto

negative beliefs, it’s in the area of wealth and money.

Look at some of the common negative beliefs about wealthand money: “Money doesn’t grow on trees...It’s easier for acamel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich manto enter the gates of heaven...Rich people are all selfish...” andso on.

Your relationship with money is like any other relationshipyou have. If you treat your spouse or your friends poorly, if youspeak ill of them, or even if you feel guilty for wanting themaround, how long do you think they’ll stay with you? Probablynot long. Money behaves exactly the same way.

Think for a moment about all the things you do every daythat relate to money. Most of us work to get the thing calledmoney. We drive to work to get the thing called money. We pay

The Great Little Book of Afformations

62 NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D.

bills so we can enjoy things like electricity, water, food, clothingand shelter. That takes money. Even worrying about how weare going to pay our bills is thinking about money!

Yet, how many of us ever admit– even to ourselves – howmuch time we spend thinking about money: trying to get more, save more, make more money?

I bet even thinking about it now may be making you uncom-fortable. Why?

Have you ever noticed that there is not one positive word inthe English language to describe someone who loves money? We think of words like “miser, hoarder, selfish, greedy” whendescribing someone who loves money, or remember oldEbeneezer Scrooge from A Christmas Carol (before the ghostsvisited him). We don’t want to be like that, do we?

But consider the following: if you speak illof rich people, how are you ever going to beone of them?

A minister friend of mine was fond of say-ing, “The best way to help the poor is to notbe one of them.”

Even Scrooge only became truly wealthywhen he began sharing his fortune with thoseless fortunate. (Perhaps the only positiveword for a person of wealth is “philanthro-pist”– but that still means you have to give itaway to be seen positively!)

Don’t limit your own wealth by thinking those who have

money are somehow not as “good” as you. Remember, print-ed on every piece of currency in The United States are the fourwords we should all have tattooed on our foreheads:

IN GOD WE TRUST

You can do so much more with money than without it. Youneed to take the guilt and shame out of your relationship withmoney, and realize that you can help many more people bybeing wealthy than being broke.

Use the following Afformations to improve your relation-ship with money, and watch it become one of the most fulfill-ing relationships you’ll ever have!

Why am I so rich and so richly blessed?

Why do I always have enough money?

Why is my credit so strong and healthy?

The Great Little Book of Afformations

Why is money no object? (This question is literally true: money has no form

and no substance. It is merely a manifestation of perceived value among human beings.

Consider this point carefully.)

Why do I have more than enough money?

Why do I have so much worth AND value? (Worth = an intrinsic quality of you that makes youdeserving of respect. Value = an amount regarded asa worthwhile trade for something else. You haveWorth just because you ARE. Your Value is deter-mined by you and those who want what you do.Think about the difference between Worth and Valuewhen you set your prices or ask for a raise in pay.)

Chapter 6.

AFFORMATIONS ON BUILDING SELF-CONFIDENCE

I never really address myself to any image anybody has of me.

That’s like fighting with ghosts. – Sally Field, Oscar-winning actress

On our Secret Code of Success workshops, we ofteninclude a “fill-in-the-blank” questionnaire that getspeople to look at their inner beliefs about themselves.

We ask our audiences to fill in the rest of this phrase: “If I’mgood to myself…” Over half of the women in our workshopsrespond to that statement by saying, “I feel guilty!”

We often do an exercise where we haveaudience members look into a mirror andwrite down the value they see in themselves. One woman became so upset just by lookingat her reflection, she ran out of the room!Imagine how negative her internal self-talkwas!

Do you sometimes feel guilty taking careof yourself? How do you feel accepting a sin-cere compliment? When someone compli-ments you, do you accept it, say thank you,

Afformations On Building Self-Confidence

T

How do you feel

accepting a sincere

compliment? T

Page 71: The Great Little Book of Afformations

NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D. 71

and move on? Or do you secretly wonder, “What do they wantfrom me?” Or do you shrug it off or even deny their compli-ment (thinking you’re being “humble”)?

There’s nothing wrong with a little humility.

What I’m talking about is the inability to accept a compli-ment. That happens when your Negative Reflection – that partof you that doesn’t believe anything good about you – has toldyou for so long lies like,“You’re not that pretty” or “You’re nottalented enough”. And guess what? You believe these liesyou’ve been telling yourself, even when someone else is tryingto give you a genuine compliment.

I was teaching Afformations on one of my Secret Code ofSuccess teleseminars one night, and two weeks later heardfrom one of our attendees. She wrote:

“Noah, thank you for teaching us on the call. I findmyself using Afformations EVERYWHERE! People areeven asking me what I’m doing to lose weight!

But the funniest part is that I haven’t ‘lost’ a thing!!!My schedule hasn’t allowed me to get to the gym, andmy eating hasn’t changed. So the scale reads the sameand I keep asking myself, ‘Why am I so fit and healthyat 125 pounds?’

People are SEEING what I’m ASKING! Do you thinkmy enthusiasm is burning off my extra cheesecakecalories?”

There’s more to building self-confidence than just beingable to accept a compliment; that’s just one behavior thatreveals your level of confidence. However, if you’ve been hold-ing onto a negative self-concept or find it hard to accept a com-pliment, use these Afformations to rebuild a positive self-imageand let your light shine from within!

Why do I gratefully accept every good thing

Dear Noah,

I wanted to share my story with you about myfirst experience with Afformations. In 2004, I wasvery dissatisfied with my job.

Many were the days I would come to work andask myself why I still came. I found no fulfillmentin the work I did and the pay, which never hasbeen very stellar, was becoming less and lessdesirable.

Looking for change at work as well as foranswers as to why I had failed at three differentbusiness ventures in the past two-and-a-half

AFFORMATIONS ON WORK & CAREER

A

years, I bought your Permission to Succeed®

course and started studying your material in late2004.

After hearing you teach about Afformationsand reading about them in your books, I decidedto turn around the questions I was asking myself.Instead of asking myself why I wasn’t happy atwork and why I didn’t find fulfillment there, I start-ed asking myself, “Why do I enjoy my work somuch?”

And, “Why is work so fulfilling for me?”

I wasn’t really diligent in asking myself thesequestions, honestly. But, whenever I found myselfstarting to think negatively about my job or catchmyself asking why I didn’t like it, I would quicklyturn to my Afformation questions and ask themseveral times, instead.

In early December 2004, I looked at my role inthe company and compared that to several newprojects the CEO had said needed to be done, butdidn’t know who would do them. I realized thatmy skills, my abilities, and everything I could bedoing at work fit those projects perfectly. I justdidn’t have the job to do them!

Taking this new thinking into consideration, Iused my Afformations more frequently. I startedasking myself those new questions without evenknowing that there could or would be a new role

The Great Little Book of Afformations

Page 80: The Great Little Book of Afformations

80 NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D.

for me.

About a week and a half later, I found the per-fect opportunity to approach the CEO about thoseprojects. I told him that I thought the companyneeded to hire someone to take on those projects, and that the person they should hire was me! Ieven found the courage to tell him that I was dis-satisfied with the way my pay had been negotiat-ed the last time I had been given a new assign-ment at work, and I deserved something more if Itook on this new role.

Well, within a week the deal was done. TheCEO created a new position in the company andapproached me about the new compensation hewould be willing to pay. I now had a new job withmore than twice the pay!

At first I didn’t even realize that what I hadbeen doing with the Afformations had any con-nection to what had just happened. But, as I’vebeen looking over your home-study materialsagain, it finally hit me. I had significantly alteredthe way I was interpreting the world.

I had gone from seeing my world negativelyand asking why it was so, to asking myself why Iwas so blessed and work was so wonderful. Justas you teach, the world had been returning exact-ly what I was asking.

Once I changed what I was asking for, the

Afformations On Work & Career

Page 81: The Great Little Book of Afformations

world produced something completely different!

I know now I went through your home-studymaterials much too fast the first time. But, thankheavens the whole thing about Afformations hadthe impact it did!

AFFORMATIONS ON LOVE

If love is the answer, could you please rephrase the question?

– Lily Tomlin, comedienne and actress

Once, during a seminar in Denver, something hap-pened to a young woman in our audience. She was adoctor and was clearly intelligent, caring, and very

magnetic to everyone around her.

Yet when we she was supposed to answer questions aboutherself and her worth in relationships, she burst into tears! After having gone through a devastating divorce and otherunsuccessful relationships, her thoughts for future love werealmost hopeless.

The questions in her head went something like this:

“Why have I failed at love? Why does love hurt so much? Why am I unloveable? Why haven’t I found the man of mydreams? Why am I not worthy of the love I desire?”

Gee, I wonder what her life looked like? Exactly: her life hadbecome the literal answer to her disempowering Afformations!

Her subconscious questions had formed a life where she hadno confidence in her ability to love and be loved. She began tothink that maybe there was no such thing as true, lasting love. Itwas the very definition of a “self-fulfilling prophecy.”

Afformations On Love

Page 89: The Great Little Book of Afformations

NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D. 89

Less than 90 days after the seminar, our office phone rang.It was the young doctor. She could hardly breathe, she was soexcited! After she caught her breath, she told me that the sem-inar had been the turning point in her life – because, for the firsttime, she saw that she was asking the wrong questions andthey were ruining her life.

She immediately stopped askingnegative Afformations, and beganusing a single empoweringAfformation that changed her life.

The Afformation she began usingwas, “Why do I have the most Theincredibly loving relationship with theAfformation man of my dreams?”

As she started asking her newAfformation, her mind’s AutomaticSearch Function began to form newpatterns. She started to see things dif-ferently, and realized she had beenstopping herself from being lovedbecause of the negative questionsshe’d been asking herself.

She came to realize that a dearfriend of hers whom she had known for some time, but wasseveral years her junior, was in fact the man of her dreams.

But she hadn’t allowed the possibility to enter her mindbefore, because of so many years of disempowering (subcon-scious) Afformations.

The Afformation

she began usingwas, “Why do Ihave the most

the man of my dreams?”

T

Page 90: The Great Little Book of Afformations

She decided to take a leap of faith. She took ACTION! Hernew Afformation allowed her to open her mind and heart to thepossibility of true love.

She took a risk and told her friend how she truly felt. Todaythey are happily married and living the life of their dreams. Allbecause she dared to ask herself a new question!

If you’re looking for love in all the wrong places, it’s becauseyou’re asking the wrong questions. If you’re in a dead-end rela-tionship, you are using disempowering Afformations that arecausing you to focus on the negative rather than the positive.

As I’ve said throughout this book, and as the greatest teach-ers in history have told us: what you focus on, grows. Usethese Afformations to re-focus your mind on the gifts of loveyou have and the gift of Love that you are.

AFFORMATIONS ON RELATIONSHIPS

Cherish your human connections: your relationships with friends and family.

– Barbara Bush, former First Lady

Years ago, one of my first coaching Students was anindependent business owner from Alabama. She hadGoogled “fear of success” and found The Success

Clinic web site. She called and asked if I would coach her per-sonally (I no longer do individual coaching, but at the time I did).

As we went through the 7 steps of my Permission to Succeedand Secret Code of Success programs, she real-ized that she was unconsciously trying to pro-tect her husband from her own success! Shewas afraid that, if she became too successful, her husband might be jealous and even feelthreatened by her success.

I suggested she write Afformations relatedto the outcome she wanted. She began afform-ing, “Why is my husband so supportive of meand my success?” She then wrote herself along letter filled with dozens of positiveAfformations, asking why her husband support-ed her and her dreams.

She calledthe very

She called the very next week for our coaching call. “Noah,it’s like a miracle!” she said.

She told me that after she had written the letter, she felt somuch better, but decided not to show it to her husband and justsee what happened.

As she was getting ready for work and her husband wasdownstairs – doing the same routine they’d been doing for 20years – she was afforming to herself her new, positive ques-tions. Suddenly, something happened that, she told me, hadnever happened in 20 years of marriage.

Her husband called up the stairs and said, “Have a greatday, honey. I love you!” Then, later in the day, he called herafter one of her meetings and asked, “How did your meetinggo?” She told me that, in 20 years, he had never once called herbefore to see how her day was going.

She told me it was the most remarkable experience of herlife– and she never even showed him the letter!

AFFORMATIONS ON CONQUERING FEAR

Fear is a question. What are you afraid of, and why? Our fears are a treasure house of

self-knowledge if we explore them. – Marilyn French, author

Did you realize that, no matter what business you’re in, yourmain job is actually selling? As one CEO put it, nothing happensuntil someone sells something.

Let’s say you’re a stay-at-home mom. Don’tyou need to “sell” your kids on the idea of notdoing drugs? What if you’re an electrician, plumber, or own your own business? You haveto “sell” your prospects and customers thatyou’re better than the next guy. If you work in acompany, you need to “sell” your boss on theidea of giving you a raise or more time off.

When we ask our seminar audiences to tellus what the words “sales” or “selling” bring tomind, people respond with words like, “manipu-late”, “used car salesman”, “pushy” or even“something I can’t do!”

What it really boils down to, however, is one

four-letter word: Fear.

The fear of selling is really the fear of rejection wearing anice suit. The fear of rejection is one of the oldest, most primalfears we have. We fear rejection because we fear being alone.Human beings used to live in tribes that depended on everymember for survival. If someone were banished or “rejected”,they stood a great chance of not surviving.

That ancient fear of not-surviving appears today as the fearof rejection. At our Secret Code of Success seminars, I remindmy Students that, when you’re trying to “sell” something, youdon’t face the possibility of rejection. You face the certainty ofrejection!

Why would I teach something that sounds so negative?Because I want you to stop beating yourself up when someonesays “no” to you. Even if you have the best product, service oridea in the world, it’s just not possible for every person to wantwhat you’re offering or to agree with you.

When someone says “no” to you, what they’re really saying(without knowing it) is: “Thank you for sharing your product, service or idea with me. I’m declining your offer right now, because I don’t see sufficient value to change what I’m current-ly doing or using.” That’s all that ‘no’ really is!

It’s not a “rejection” of you at all. The next time someonesays ‘no’ to you, remind yourself that their ‘no’ really has noth-ing to do with you.

All they’re really saying is, “Thank you, but I perceive thevalue of what you’re showing me to be less than my desire tochange.”

AFFORMATIONS ON OVERCOMING BAD HABITS

AND ADDICTIONS

Life’s most urgent question is:what are you doing for others?

– Martin Luther King, Jr.

In our Secret Code of Success seminars, I often ask myStudents: “When did you get ‘points’ in your family?” Inother words, when did you get praise and encourage-

ment? A large majority of women say they got points when they:

• Were quiet

• Did what they were told

• Toed the line

• Got good grades

• Stayed out of sight

• Made other people happy

And the men report they got “points”when they:

• Were perfect

• Scored the winning touchdown

Page 115: The Great Little Book of Afformations

NOAH ST. JOHN, PH.D. 115

• Didn’t cry

• Got straight A’s

• Worked hard

• Did everything right

Does any of that sound familiar? In your life today, are youstill trying to “be quiet, stay out of sight” or “be perfect, doeverything right”? For example, let’s say you’re about to pickup the phone to make a sales call. Do you stop yourself bythinking, “What if this isn’t a good time…What if they don’t likewhat I’m selling...What if I don’t make this sale, then I’ll nevermake quota…?”

The irony is, all these beliefs float-ing around in your subconscious causethe habits of avoidance and procrasti-nation. Procrastination and other badhabits are simply a subconscious wayto put off feeling pain (the pain of rejec-tion, the pain of failure, etc.).

Now, you may not have that partic-ular bad habit. But I bet there’s at leastone habit you’re not thrilled about, that’s getting in the way of you gettingwhat you want.

Remember, Afformations are based on science, not magic. If you don’t take response-ability, you won’t have the ability torespond. You cannot simply mouth these new words, do the

same things you’ve always done, and expect your life tochange. However, if your disempowering subconscious ques-tions are keeping you stuck in self-destructive behaviors, changing your questions can be the first step to making bigchanges in your life.

Use these Afformations to form new behaviors around pro-crastination, overeating, or any other self-destructive habityou’d like to get rid of.

Then take new ACTIONS, and watch what miracles occur for you!

Chapter 12.

AFFORMATIONS ON SPIRITUALITY

I had a million questions to ask God: but when I met Him, they all fled my mind;

and it didn’t seem to matter. – Christopher Morley, novelist and journalist

Could you like to get closer to God? (It’s a trick ques-tion.) Many people come up after our seminars andsay they want to feel closer to God. I always ask them,

“Why don’t you feel close to God right now?” They invariablyanswer that they’re going through tough times, or that they’velost something very important to them – for example, a spouse,

a job, a parent or a relationship they weren’tready to let go of.

I then ask them, “Why do you feel that Godisn’t close to you because you lost something?”And they reply, “Because God wouldn’t dosomething like that to someone He loves.”

At that point, I usually just look at them, andthey figure out what they just said. Do youknow anyone – anyone – who hasn’t at one time

lost something very important to them?

Does this mean God just abandons us whenever He “feels”

T

in Spirit.

Page 123: The Great Little Book of Afformations

like it? Or because we’ve been “bad”?

Simply because you’ve lost something that’s important toyou doesn’t mean an All-Loving, All-Forgiving God has aban-doned you.

Loss and gain are human ideas, not God’s. You may like the“gain” part better.

But to God, it’s all just Life.

There can be no loss in Spirit. All things are One, but weexperience them as Separate. Use these Afformations (and cre-ate your own) to gain a deeper understanding and appreciationof the fact that to get close to God, all you need do is realize thatthere is no spot where God is not.

Why is my life so perfect and so perfectly wonder-full?

Why is it so easy and so okay for me to have,

The most important questions in life can never beanswered by anyone except oneself.

– John Fowles, English novelist

This letter arrived at our office the other day:

Dear Noah: My last Sunday felt like the chil-dren’s book, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible,No Good, Very Bad Day! I had spent all day onSaturday helping cut TONS of dead wood out oftwo trees at my dad’s/son’s house, so needless tosay, on Sunday I was not only tired but SORE!

Late Sunday evening I began looking for mymisplaced cell phone. We combed the house, rang the phone, called Dad to see if I’d left it at hishouse, went through both houses and all laun-dry...still no phone.

En route home from looking all over Dad’syard, I decided to drive by my stepfather’s house(which I own) to see if any of his neighbors wereshowing signs of new roofs being installed fromour recent hail storm.

AFFORMATIONS ON LIFE & HAPPINESS

The ONLY sign in a yard was at my stepfa-ther’s! I panicked, thinking he had negotiated(without my consent) for a new roof.

Ready for an ulcer, I got home and STILL nosign of the phone. My phone service said it wasprobably found or destroyed by the way it wasringing straight to voicemail, so I prepared to filea claim on my cell phone insurance. They hadclosed 13 minutes prior, so I couldn’t call it in.

As I continued for the phone, I realized I hadlost not one, but TWO, missing checks for nearly$10,000 each that had arrived several days earlierand I had not had time to take care of. Searchedthe desk, piles of papers, bank bags...no checks!!

By now, I am nearly crazy!

Ready to drown myself in my hot tub, I calledmy friend for “mental garbage take out.” Herusual techniques to get me back up failed. Sincewe’d both read your books, she and I decided totry using afFORMations.

We created one for her and then I decidedmine would be, “Why am I so happy?” I half-jok-ingly decided that taking a sleeping pill andsleeping until Tuesday when offices opened so Icould resolve some issues on all three mattersmight be my best option!

Off to bed I went, sarcastically muttering,“Why am I soooo happy?!” Just as I turned the

Afformations On Life & Happiness

corner to my bedroom, what should appear look-ing right at me from a bookcase but my cellphone!!

The battery was dead (hence the no ringing). Ihad come home from tree trimming in a VERYbig rush to shower before my dinner guestsarrived and in my rush had slung the phone in anunusual place.

Thankfully, I had NOT been able to file a claimfor a new phone.

Early Monday morning (July 4th, no less), Idecided to call the roofing company on the verylong shot that their office would be open at 7:10a.m. Much to my surprise, the office workeranswered and after a short search was able to tellme that the roof in question was not beingreplaced (or even in need of replacement, YEA!)but the sign was left in the yard as advertisementfor the roofing man. Whew!

Next, I looked in the tote bag where I keep mybank bags and lo and behold, there in plain sightwas the envelope with the two $10,000 checks!

I couldn’t believe how quickly (and on a holi-day to boot) all three BIGGIES were dissolved.Afformations really did the trick!

Thank you!

What makes you feel happy? What makes a fulfilling life? Asmuch as you’ve heard this before, it really is not dependent onhaving an amount of money. I’ve met people earning in thehigh six figures who were miserable, and those making a lotless who are blissfully happy.

Having that rich, happy, fulfilled life comes from doing whatyou’re here to do and blessing others through being Who YouReally Are.

Many times, however, the questions you’re asking do notsupport the life you want, because they keep you focused onwhat you don’t have.

Now that you’re near the end of this book, you now have thepower to change your life by first changing what you focus on– by changing the questions you ask – then taking newACTIONS that support your new beliefs.

Use these Afformations to help you change your focus, andallow yourself to live the life you’ve always imagined!

A good question is never answered. It is not a bolt to be tightened into place,

but a seed to be planted and to bear more seed toward the hope

of greening the landscape of idea.– Henry David Thoreau

This book, like the others in the Afformations and SecretCode of Success series, was written to help youbecome wildly successful in your life, career and rela-

tionships.

But what do you do now that the book is over? If you reallywant the results and benefits you desire for your life – thingslike more money, better relationships, or a closer connectionwith God – you must do what I shared with you in Chapter 3:Take ACTION!

In Chapter 2, I introduced you to The Afformations Method:the simplest, easiest way I’ve ever seen to get what you want inyour life. I showed you how to use what you’re already doing –asking questions – to create the life you’ve always wanted.

In Chapter 3, you learned the 4 steps to create empoweringAfformations that can change your life. I recommend you com-mit to doing these 4 simple steps daily, because this will rootthese principles into your mind. Eventually you will find your-

self looking at life very differently. From there you will makenew choices, take new actions, and create new results.

If you want change to be permanent, you must re-wire yourbrain. All this means is that you must put the steps into prac-tice. Not just read about it, not just talk about it, and not justthink about it, but actually DO it!

Beware of the little voice in your head saying somethinglike, “I can’t do it...it’s too hard...I don’t have time.” As I explainin my Secret Code of Success programs, that’s your NegativeReflection talking – that voice in your head saying you can’tmake changes.

Remember, its job is to keep you right where you are, inyour Familiar Zone. Don’t listen to it. Do the steps, use yournew Afformations, and watch your life take off!

I also suggest you reread this book from beginning to end atleast once a month for the next year. What? Your little voicemight be screaming. I’ve already read the book, why do I needto read it over and over again? Good question, and the answeris simple: repetition is the mother of learning. Again, the moreyou study this book, the faster the concepts will become natu-ral and automatic for you.

After my discovery in The Shower, I realized it was my dutyand responsibility to bring this teaching to tens of millions ofpeople around the world. My mission is to create a nation anda world of Loving Mirrors, and to assist those with the samevision on the way to true wealth, peace and joy.

I am truly blessed to lead teleseminars, workshops andcamps that transform people’s lives quickly and permanently.

SPREAD THE WORD

The 3 steps to True Success:

1. Find something that works.

2. Tell everyone about it.

3. Repeat.

– Noah St. John

Okay, so now you know the steps to create Afformationsthat can change your life. The only question now is: are yougoing to share what you’ve learned or keep it to yourself ?

As I’ve shared with my Students for years now, the onlythings you have to do to succeed in life are: Learn, Do andTeach.

First, Learn what it takes to succeed. That’s what this bookand my other courses and programs are all about. Second, Dothe steps. It’s one thing to know, and quite another to take whatyou know and put it into ACTION. But taking action is the onlyway to manifest the wealth and happiness you desire.

And finally, Teach what you’ve learned to others. The bestway we can learn ourselves is when we share what we’velearned with others.

Because this is true, I encourage you to share what you’veexperienced in this book with others. Get the message of thisbook out to as many people as possible. Commit to telling at

Not only will you be introducing them to a new (and easier)way of thinking that can change their lives, they will also learna new way of Being in this world that will uplift everyone whogets this message.

What better way to make a difference than to help those youcare about to use the greatest gift they’ve been given: their ownmind?
