First Reading: Deuteronomy 8:2-3ff Moses said to the people: ‘Remember how the Lord your God led you for forty years in the wilderness, to humble you, to test you and know your inmost heart – whether you would keep his commandments or not. He humbled you, he made you feel hunger, he fed you with manna which neither you nor your fathers had known, to make you understand that man does not live on bread alone but that man lives on everything that comes from the mouth of the Lord. ‘Do not become proud of heart. Do not forget the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery: who guided you through this vast and dreadful wilderness, a land of fiery serpents, scorpions, thirst; who in this waterless place brought you water from the hardest rock; who in this wilderness fed you with manna that your fathers had not known.’ The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Responsorial Psalm: Praise the Lord, Jerusalem! From St. Paul to the Corinthians 10:16-17 The blessing-cup that we bless is a communion with the blood of Christ, and the bread that we break is a communion with the body of Christ. The fact that there is only one loaf means that, though there are many of us, we form a single body because we all have a share in this one loaf. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God . A reading from the holy Gospel according to John 6: 51-58 Glory to You O Lord Jesus said to the Jews: ‘I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I shall give is my flesh, for the life of the world.’ Then the Jews started arguing with one another: ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’ they said. Jesus replied: ‘I tell you most solemnly, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you will not have life in you. Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life, and I shall raise him up on the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in him. As I, who am sent by the living Father, myself draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me will draw life from me. This is the bread come down from heaven; not like the bread our ancestors ate: they are dead, but anyone who eats this bread will live for ever.’ The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Laud, O Zion, your salvation,

Laud with hymns of exultation,

Christ, your king and shepherd true:

Bring him all the praise you know,

He is more than you bestow,

Never can you reach his due.

Here the new law's new oblation,

By the new king's revelation,

Ends the form of ancient rite:

Now the new the old effaces,

Truth away the shadow chases,

Light dispels the gloom of night.

What he did at supper seated,

Christ ordained to be repeated,

His memorial never to cease:

And his rule for guidance taking,

Bread and wine we hallow making

Thus our sacrifice of peace.

True bread, good Shepherd, tend us,

Jesus, of your love befriend us,

You refresh us, you defend us,

Your eternal goodness send us

In the land of life to see. Amen.

Alleluia, alleluia: I am the living

bread from heaven, says the Lord; ifanyone eats this bread he will live

Feast of Corpus Christi Feast of the Body of Christ

It is ancient and dates back to the 13thCentury. Fr. Peter of Prague was offeringMass at the Chapel of St Christine at Bolsenanear Orvieto when the host after theconsecration began to bleed and the Bloodstained the altar and the sacred linen. Someof it was taken to Orvieto where Pope Urbanwas residing and he declared it a miracle andinstituted this feast in honour of the realpresence of Christ in the Sacrament of theEucharist - Holy Communion. He petitioned abrilliant Theologian, St Thomas Aquinas, towrite the hymns and Mass parts - we aresinging those hymns today.

Liturgy of the Eucharist in theMass comprises three phases:

 Offertory: we offer ourselves withChrist to God the Father;

 Consecration: we relive the death ofChrist now sacramentally re-presentedat Lavington;

Communion: we draw spiritual lifefor the soul from the Host, theglorious Body of Christ - a foretaste ofour resurrection.

"I am the bread of life.. and

my flesh is real" says Jesus.John 6:48,55

Real PresenceSt. Cyril of Jerusalem, in a catecheticallecture given in the middle of the fourthcentury (350 A.D.), said: "Do not, therefore, regard the bread and wine assimply that; for they are, according tothe Master's declaration, the Body andBlood of Christ. Even though the sensessuggest to you the other, let faith makeyou firm. Do not judge in this matter bytaste, but be assured by the faith, notdoubting that you have been deemedworthy of the Body and Blood ofChrist". Jurgens, p. 361. #846.

3 Conditions for Holy Communionso that it is HOLY:

1. Be a baptized Catholic who believes;2. Be free of mortal/serious sin;3. Be fasting for 1 hour beforehand.

Doctrine of

Transubstantiation

explains the presence of

Christ in the substance

of the consecrated Host

while the appearances

of 'bread' remain.

CHILD HUMOUR

A little girl, unused to Mass, became restless as

the old priest's homily dragged on and on.

Finally, she leaned over to her mother and

whispered: 'Mummy, if we give him the money

now, will he let us go?"
