The Good Word

Our Savior’s Conducted a Straw Poll at the June

Annual Meeting of the Congregation

We were asked to assess the following language as our public statement of welcome:

Our Savior’s is a Welcoming Community. We affirm with the apostle Paul that in Christ “...there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female" -Galatians 3:28. Christ has made us one. We are committed to extending this welcome to EveryOne without regard to gender identity, sexual orientation, race, age, socio-economic status, disability, political association, marital status, education or national origin. God’s reconciling love in Christ is at work in EveryOne.

The results of the “straw poll” have been tallied: Total responses = 101 5 responses (4.9%) were in "strong opposition or no support." 4 responses (3.9%) were in "moderate opposition or uncertainty." 10 responses (9.9%) were in "neither support nor opposition." 14 responses (13.9%) were in "moderate support." 68 responses (67.3%) were in "strong support."

We are grateful for all the members of the congregation as we share our mission to "Invite EveryOne to Faith in Jesus Christ, Participation in the Church and Service in God’s World." Photos from the Seattle Pride Parade held on Sunday, June 26

Leaders Dine & Deduce We are grateful for an outstanding turnout at this year’s Leadership Dinner. After picture taking and eating together, we turned ourselves loose to brainstorming specific mission and ministry initiatives.

We amassed 172 sticky notes – each with a single bullet point summing up a possible focus – divided up into one of three groupings: COME – GO – GIVE (we ran out of time for GROW – but we’ll find a time for that one at a later date!) These have been carefully recorded and as Council works toward planning for the coming mission year these thoughts will be important in guiding that process. Thank you all.

Ministry Participation Survey What now---results are beginning to be tallied. People who marked anything with a “?” will be contacted. Lists of volunteers (with contact information) will be given to appropriate committees or groups along with instructions for following up.

Some volunteer opportunities will require specific training which will need to be arranged in a variety of ways depending on the nature of task.

Grace, grace grace !!! That is what separated Martin Luther from the Roman Catholic tradition. By grace he was not burned at the stake like other early reformers. By grace he had the printing press in a Divine moment. The Word has circled the world thousands of times since 1517. This fall we continue to learn about and experience the Word of Grace that has reformed and is

reforming us still. Set aside time to be a part of this celebration. Classes and events will help increase your understanding and experience of Grace. Listen carefully to the words in your daily life.

Words of LAW: MUST & SHOULD Words of GRACE: MAY & CAN

Commons Project Update

The roof is nearly complete as this is written. We were able to do additional roofing repairs as part of the project with new shingles over the office area, Fellowship Hall and the Learning Center.

Now there is a delay in the sprinkler system design. The city hydrant water pressure is inadequate to supply both the number of sprinkler heads and the necessary height requirements. They will likely require us to install a booster pump. We will keep you apprized.

The windows will soon be installed, the exterior work will continue, the last cement pour will make the area weather tight.

We thank you for your continued support. Your contributions now exceed $630,000. This ongoing support is very important. The more we raise now, the less we have to borrow.

Come and see the space on Sunday!

Jim Hunt (email [email protected])

The Good Word Newsletter is Moving to a Weekly Emailed Format Plans are underway to begin sending the Good Word as an emailed weekly newsletter. We anticipate using a service that will send it to each person with an email address, rather than one to each household. We want to be better, greener stewards of our resources as we use less paper and save on postage and printing costs.

The Sunday EveryOne Pages will still be printed on paper each week and will contain timely information for those who prefer to receive their news on paper.

What can you do? We need to make sure that the email addresses in our system are up to date! Let us know you are not currently receiving an email from the office, please contact Nancy in the office at [email protected] to give her that info. We will need to have an email for each member of the household for our records. It’s important for us to keep each and EveryOne apprised of the news in our life and mission together. Thanks for your help!

From the Office ...

Blue Jeans Sunday August 28 Wear your working jeans so we can stay after church for an hour or two for some summer clean up and maintenance here at church. We’ll have some food and drink. Bring your gloves, boots and yard tools. More details to come – leave a note on your yellow slip. Contact Jim Hunt at [email protected].

Sunday School We have excitement growing for Sunday School in the Fall! We are back to our regular worship times at 9am & 11am, with Sunday School in between during the Learning Hour. Our amazing teaching volunteers are getting ready too, and we are only in need of two teachers for the 3rd grade class. Interested? See Pam. One of the cool and exciting things for next year: having one Sunday a month for a multigenerational event for EveryOne. There is lots that an 8 year old and an 88 year old can do together in learning and fun. Join us next year in the new excitement of everything Sunday School and the Learning Hour!

Pam Gompf, Director of Children, Youth and Family Ministry Away this Summer on Study Leave CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) is where those seeking ordination in the ELCA must complete 400 hours of chaplaincy.

From Pam: I am currently serving full-time and on-call at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bellingham to complete this step of my journey towards ordination. I have been assigned to the ICU and the Labor & Delivery floors while doing on-call to the ER and other departments of the hospital on particular weekends and overnights during certain week days. I am also commuting every day so – please pray for safety in my travels and for lower gas prices!

This is an important journey for me to not only check off something on a necessary list towards ordination, but it is also a rewarding and transformative training in self-reflection and being with others during important life transitions. I am so grateful for the opportunity OSLC has given me to take this temporary leave to complete this necessary step in my education. While gone this summer, I am already missing you all, but I look forward to my return in September… of course I will be back for Salmon BBQ- I’d be crazy to miss that!

Please seek out the CYFM board members to assist, as well as OSLC staff with any questions until my return. I have absolute trust and faith in their abilities… remembering… we are all flexible… and I am very grateful for that!

Grace+Peace, Pam Gompf

Staff Vacations The office staff will be on vacation at various times throughout the summer. It is a good idea to call before you stop in, to make sure there will be someone in the office who is available to help you.
