A Message from the Rector The Very Rev. F. Wilson Brown

Dear friends in Christ,You and I are part of somethingdelightful, charming, andimportant. In a world of flash, glitz, and hostility we celebratethe eternal, the enduring, andthe loving. We gather eachSunday not to put on a show, but to worship together.

Throughout the week we care for each other andthe world in God’s name. And all of that matters…a lot.

On the Sundays that I have been away this sum-mer, I have taken the opportunity to visit some ofthe parishes of the Lynchburg Convocation. TheConvocation spans from Arrington to Altavistaand from Bedford to Lynchburg. There are four-teen parishes in the Convocation of the total offifty-five in the Diocese.

Each parish has its own style, its own strengths, and its own weaknesses but what stands out is howsimilar we are. There is a family resemblance inliturgy, dedication to beauty and grace, and com-mitment to care for the wider community.

My most recent visits have taken me to Trinity,Arrington and to St. Peter’s, Altavista. Trinity isserved by a part time priest, Mark Furlow. Theyare gearing up for their annual hospitality to folksattending the Lockn’ Festival, particularly the AAcommunity. The Sunday I was there, they usedHoly Eucharist, Rite I with a combination of organmusic and more contemporary guitar pieces. Atcoffee hour we heard about an Eagle Scout projectmeeting the following week to build a labyrinthoutside the church. It should be ready the nexttime we go that way!

St. Peter’s is currently alternating lay led MorningPrayer with communion services provided by sup-ply priests. They are full swing with participationin “Gus the Bus” and are about to restart a

lectionary study group. The participants gather toread Sunday’s lessons in several translations and totalk about what they’ve read. The participantsreport that they feel better prepared to listen anddigest what is said on Sunday.

The Sunday I visited, their worship MorningPrayer, Rite I, was led by Nan Carmack andAubrey Rosser. (You may notice in the announce-ments that Aubrey is also the person we will call toget tickets for the Baseball With the Bishop eventon August 23rd.) One moment in worship stoodout as particularly graceful, and it was born of anerror. The leader announced the wrong Psalm andstarted to lead us in that Psalm. Most of the con-gregation simply turned to the “revised” Psalm inthe Book of Common Prayer and began to readalong. Later Aubrey shared with us that he oftentells folks, who may be confused or intimidated byour worship, that “we don’t keep score.”

All this helps me see our own congregation withfresh vision. Through the pages of this newsletterwe read of wonderful activities that serve our con-gregation and community. We see many names ofpeople who offer their time, treasure, and talent tonurture and strengthen the ministry of the congre-gation. We come together on Sunday to worshipGod let us give thanks for each other: Yawd Crew,Altar Guild, Choir, Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers,Nursery Volunteers, Children’s Chapel Leaders, and Coffee Hour Teams— just to name a few—who help us worship. We are part of somethingdelightful, charming, and important. We are theEpiscopal Church in Bedford.

Your brother in Christ,—Wilson+

This year St. John's will be taking part in OperationChristmas Child. This is a project started in Walesin 1993 to collect shoeboxes filled with toys for chil-dren living in orphanages in Romania. Since thattime the effort has become part of the Samaritan'sPurse led by Franklin Graham. More than 113 mil-lion children around the world have received giftfilled boxes since 1993. Boxes designed to fit intospecial shipping cartons will be distributed at thebeginning of September and will be collected by theend of the month. Those who take provided boxeswill be asked to fill the box with appropriate toys, personal hygiene items, and school supplies. Youdecide to purchase items for boys or girls in age cat-egories of: 2–4, 5–9, or 10–14. (Click here forsuggestions on How to Pack a Shoebox)

You may include a personalnote, a photo, and your homeaddress if you choose to do so.You will also be asked to includean check for $7 made out toSamaritan's Purse with OCC on

the memo line. This money goes toward the cost ofshipping. You can go on-line and read testimonialsfrom children who received boxes. One boy in anorphanage hated that all the children had to sharetowels. He got a box that contained a wash cloth. He was amazed someone very far away sent him hisvery own towel. In addition to receiving a gift box, children get a chance to learn about Jesus Christ. This is a huge international project that you can bea part of. It might be a good opportunity to get thechildren in your life to help select the gift items. Wecan be part of spreading Christ's love throughoutthe world through Operation Christmas Child.

Shepherd's TableFriday, July l, 2016 turned into a big day for thosecooking and serving at our monthly meal. Our won-derful Mexican meal consisted of tacos with meat, lettuce, tomatoes and shredded cheese, black beans, fresh fruit, and choices of desserts. We were happyto serve 82 plates.

Those helping or providing food included JoKissenberth, Ellen Wandrei, Rebecca Mays, LynetteHealy, Jim Hueber, Cheryl Miller, Gail Guerin,Dawn Spencer, Ann Linkous, Kathy Childers,Shannon McGuirk, Marylin Sites, RevelleHamilton, Jo Bell, Marge Rucker, Maya Schmehl, and Brenda Arbogast.

Many thanks to Sylvia Graham who made the deli-cious seasoned rice and provided the taco shells. Itwas her suggestion that we prepare a totally differ-ent meal! Many of our clients ate several tacos andwere tickled to have a different menu.

Our next meal will be Friday, August 5, and wewould love to have many hands to help. Please con-sider your time and talent to give to our neighborswho are less fortunate than us. It would be nice todivide our help into two groups and some of uswould not have to stay for all five hours. Please callJudy Whitehead at 297-5480 to volunteer.

Perhaps you recallseeing Stan driving one or two fancy sportscars ormaybe you recall seeing him eating breakfast at theFork’s. He lived in Bedford for nearly 30 years withhis late wife Peggy. We lost track of Stan after he moved to Lynchburgin 2014, but the Osbornes’ kept in touch after theymoved to Blountville, Tennessee in 2015. Stan passed away on July 9th in Lynchburg. TheRev. Jamie Osborne conducted the memorial serv-ice on Sunday, July 17, 2016 at the Burch-MessierChapel. Jamie did a beautiful service of scripturereading, a homily of remembrances, and he askedfor people to stand to give their tributes. MaryAnne Eubank played the hymn “Soon and VerySoon” which the choir had sung during the 10:30am service at St. John’s that day. Also attending thememorial were Shannon McGuirk, and Bill &Rebecca Mays. It was wonderful to see bothCatherine & Jamie and hear about their childrenand family near them in Virginia and Tennessee.Following the service, members of Stan’s family metat nearby El Cazador for further conversation.
