Mission #1

For this unit, you and your lit circle will be its own unique community. As a community, you will need to decide how you will function, in addition to determining what makes your community unique from the all the rest.

You will ALL create a Google Doc with this title: Our Group. Only ONE of you will be selected to share with the class, so it is important that you all have the same information!

Make sure to include ALL group members’ names!

What to include in your Google Doc:

1. What is the name of your community?• Justify your reasoning for this name.

2. What are the rules/policies that govern your community? These rules should be essential to the smooth running of your community.

• Ridiculous or irrelevant rules should be avoided.

3. What will be the consequences if somebody breaks these rules?

• The consequences should be logical and “fitting with the crime.”

4. What makes your community unique from the other communities?

• Think of something that will be unique—handshake, song, cheer, sign, etc. Be prepared to share!

Discussion TasksWhen you meet in your groups, you will need to prepare ahead of time by completing the following:

Reading specific pages TWO discussion questions (see next slide) TWO passages that gave you “cause for pause,” as well as some analysis of the

passage

Your work should be prepared in a Google Doc. The Google Doc should be titled “Giver Discussion” and it should include ALL of your discussion prep, but be separated/labeled by the date.

Each task will be outlined on the following slides.

Here are your TENTATIVE meeting dates, although they are subject to change:

Meeting #1, Tuesday, 2/18: Chapters 1-8

Meeting #2, Thursday, 2/20: Chapters 9-16

Meeting #3, Wednesday, 2/26: Chapters 17-end

Discussion Question Types

This is your community, so you get a great deal of say in who does what questions, but here the topics ideas that should be taken into consideration: Questions about characters Questions about plot Examples/questions about irony, symbolism, &

persuasion/propaganda Other types of questions like predictions are ok, but PLEASE

avoid the “How would you feel…?”, or “When was a time when…?” etc. People cannot really discuss; that is more SHARING like a

therapy session

“Cause for Pause” passages The reading level of this book is actually quite low in the

LITERAL sense; however, there are many abstract/HOTS concepts and you will be expected to read at that level.

As you are reading, be aware of passages where you literally have to stop and think, “Even though I understand all or most of the words on the pages, I think that there might be a concept that is beyond what the words are saying.”

For two of these, please do the following:1. Write down the passage, word for word. Include quotation

marks and page numbers.

2. Summarize or “translate” what is happening to the best of your ability. GO BEYOND THE OBVIOUS!
