Appendix D: CHINOOK Technical Specifications

Legend

Event: CHINOOK tournaments and matches.Computer: The computer used by CHINOOK for that event. Manufacturers in-

clude:HP = Hewlett-PackardIBM = International Business MachinesSGI = Silicon Graphics InternationalSun = Sun Microsystems

Proc: The number of processors available on the machine and the number actuallyused.

RAM: Machine memory in megabytes.SP: Machine speed as measured using the popular SPECi benchmark. The

larger the number, the faster the computer.Pos: The time in seconds taken by PHOENIX to analyze a standard set of chess

positions. It was tempting to put the CHINOOK numbers here but since theprogram was continually changing, this would be misleading. For exam-ple, before the 1992 Tinsley match the evaluation function was modified, and it became much more expensive to compute. The PHOENIX numbers were compiled by Steve Sutphen. Since 1986 hehas been using an old version of PHOENIX to assess the speed of comput-ers. Note that the SPECi numbers are the published speed of the computer, while the PHOENIX numbers represent the observed speed of a particularapplication. Of interest is that by the SPECi benchmark, the SGI Chal-lenge is faster than the Sun-4/260 by a factor of 94/7 = 13.5. Accordingto the PHOENIX test, a program similar in structure to CHINOOK, the im-provement factor is only 3500/357 = 9.8. For some reason CHINOOK’s andPHOENIX’s performance never quite matched up with the manufacturer’sadvertised claims.

Appendix F: Proof Statistics

The table on the following page gives statistics for the nineteen openings used tosolve checkers. The columns are as follows:

Proof: The proven value for this opening.Searches: The number of positions handed off by the proof-tree manager to be

searched by the solvers.Max ply: The depth of the longest line searched by the proof-tree manager in the

complete tree built for this opening.Minimal: The size of the proof-tree manager’s search tree once all computations

that are unnecessary for the final result are removed.Max ply: The depth of the longest line searched by the proof-tree manager in the

minimal tree.

Note that the total for a column does not necessarily match the sum of the col-umn entries. When all nineteen openings are merged into one tree, there are someduplicate positions. They have been removed.
