0930 – 1045 – Panel one

Lawyer’s qualifications in the startup era – what do we need to know?Startups should not be seen as creators of a new legal area, but as a new approach to business, resulting in the necessity of a reorientation of the lawyer’s practice to better serve this growing market. This panel will provide the discussion of the main skills required to lawyers on the ascending Brazilian and international startup market. Moderator

Helena Suarez Margarido SuM Law, São Paulo

SpeakersAndoni Hernandez Demarest Advogados, São PauloHoracio Vianello Vianello Law, Buenos Aires

1045 – 1115 Coffee break

1115 – 1230 – Panel two

The next steps of compliance programs: technology and Latin America trends and challenges in anti-corruption and antitrust damages compensationSince the enactment of anti-corruption law in Brazil, the compliance practice has been increased and strengthened with the introduction of mandatory compliance programmes, corporative codes of ethics and other integrity procedures. As a challenging second step, the sector may be driven to issues that can save time and money for companies, avoiding inappropriate judicialisation of cases in which the company could end up damaging other undertakings. This is the case for antitrust damages compensation and securities litigation, which are increasing worldwide, and which should begin to be observed more carefully by local companies. For that matter, this panel will seek to discuss the main challenges in the elaboration and implementation of such structures for the lawyer that works with Brazilian companies. Moderator

IBA Harassment PolicyIBA conferences provide unrivalled professional development and network-building opportunities for international legal practitioners and their professional associates. Accordingly, all conference attendees are expected to show respect and courtesy to other attendees, IBA staff and those involved with hosting the events throughout the conference and at all conference events, receptions, and parties, whether officially organised by the IBA or others. All delegates, guests, attendees, speakers, exhibitors, staff and volunteers at any IBA event are required to conform to the IBA Harassment Policy.

Wednesday continued

1230 – 1345 Lunch

1345 – 1500 – Panel three

Block chain solutions and the impacts on the legal profession: contracts and commercial integrationIn recent years, block chain solutions have developed into a key tool for lawyers to deal with business interactions and data. Block chain, with its automated mechanisms that matches the intense business dynamics of smart contracts, optimization of commercial transactions and its polymorphic capabilities, is expected to establish a new dynamic and security standard in the legal profession. This new reality will require an active role of block chain solutions in the education of young lawyers. This panel will focus on debating the fundamental steps in the qualification of lawyers regarding block chain solutions, mainly in the contractual and commercial area. Moderator

Professor Roberto Augusto Castellanos Pfeiffer Universidade de São Paulo Law School, São Paulo

SpeakersRafael Steinfeld Steinfeld Advocacia, São PauloNoreen Weiss MacDonald Weiss, New York; Communications and Publications Officer, IBA Closely Held and Growing Business Enterprises Committee

The IBA, its officers and staff accept no responsibility for any views expressed, presentations or materials produced by delegates or speakers at the Conference.

1500 – 1530 Coffee break

1530 – 1645 – Panel four

The machines trying to reestablish relations: how to deal with AI in mediation/arbitration as a tool to predict results and define scenariosThe use of artificial intelligence in several law tasks is not a great novelty anymore. Lawyers are now more in a process of insertion on the possibilities broughtabout by AI to help in their routines, than getting rid of the fearful first impression. However, when thinking about the alternative dispute resolution field, these types of tools may be seen as inappropriate, due to the complex and subtle aspects inherent to this field. On the other hand, AI is already providing alternative dispute resolution methods, such as decisions support systems that use data to understand the possibilities for defining the best conciliatory decisions, and the so-called knowledge bases systems. They are capable of handling a variety of groups with technical and specific knowledge to maximize the machine with more accurate and technical decisions. This panel will aim to discuss these new challenges raised by the contact of AI with arbitration and mediation. Moderator

Luis Alberto Salton Peretti Souto Correa Advogados, São Paulo

SpeakersAdriana Braghetta LO Baptista Advogados, São PauloProfessor Rodrigo de Lima Vaz Sampaio CEU Law School,São Paulo

International Bar Associationthe global voice of the legal profession

The International Bar Association (IBA), established in 1947, is the world’s leading organisation of international legal practitioners, bar associations and law societies. The IBA influences the development of international law reform and shapes the future of the legal profession throughout the world. It has a membership of more than 80,000 individual lawyers and more than 190 bar associations and law societies spanning over 160 countries. It has considerable expertise in providing assistance to the global legal community.

Grouped into two divisions – the Legal Practice Division and the Public and Professional Interest Division – the IBA covers all practice areas and professional interests, providing members with access to leading experts and up-to-date information. Through the various committees of the divisions, the IBA enables an interchange of information and views among its members as to laws, practices and professional responsibilities relating to the practice of law around the globe. Additionally, the IBA’s world-class conferences provide unrivalled professional development and network-building opportunities for international legal practitioners, senior business professionals, regulators and government officials.

IBA Young Lawyers’ Committee overview

In order to attract young lawyers to join the association and become active and engaged in its various committees, groups and initiatives, the IBA established the Young Lawyers’ Committee. All the committee’s activities have a significant impact on the promotion of the IBA amongst young lawyers and their willingness to join and become active therein. Apart from attracting young colleagues to join the Committee, we further motivate them to become active in the IBA’s Legal Practice Division, Public and Professional Interest Division, Bar Issues Commission and Regional Fora. The major goal of all activities is to create a win-win situation in which young colleagues can enhance their skills and networks thanks to IBA programmes, conferences and other projects, while simultaneously providing the IBA and its constituents with fresh ideas and a vivid contact to the next generation of legal experts and counsel. The objectives of the Young Lawyers’ Committee are to identify, discuss and promote issues involving young lawyers both around the world and within the association. The YLC aims to achieve this by means of fluid communications with the other IBA Committees so that their relevant activities and programmes can be actively promoted to young lawyers as well as by getting young lawyers involved directly by recommending them as speakers. Other means of communication applied by the Committee are its Newsletters and E-bulletins, which are published around 3 times per year. Here, the Officers of the YLC report on their activities and projects while young colleagues from all over the

world submit articles on topics in their jurisdictions they consider being of interest for the Committee
