As part of the Kootenay pride weekend celebrations, “off the Cuff theatre” will present a read-ing of Jeff baron’s awarding winning play “Visiting mr. Green” featuring actors michael Graham and Cooper mcGinnis. the play tells the story of mr. Green, an elderly, retired dry cleaner who wanders into New York traffic and is almost hit by a car driven by Ross Gardiner, a 29-year-old cor-
porate executive. the young man is given a community service of help-ing the widower once a week for six months. What starts as a comedy about two men who do not want to be in the same room together becomes a gripping and moving drama as they get to know each other, come to care about each other and open old wounds they’ve been hiding and nursing for years. Admission by donation.

Amy Theissen: Soul Fed FolkSaturday, Sept. 6, 8 p.m at Expressions Café, 554 Ward St.
Calgary singer-songwriter Amy thiessen has a powerful, versatile pop voice, which defies easy com-parison to other artists, but that, at times, recalls many: the dreaminess of dido, the jazzy sophistication of Joni mitchell, and the raw fragility of basia bulat, to name but a few. her arrangements straddle the divide between indie folk and pop. Russell bowers of the CbC wrote that “an Amy thiessen performance is an hyp-notic blend of words and music that is at once, spiritual and fun.”

SD8 preparing for schoolKootenay Lake school district#8
superintendent Jeff Jones issued a letter August 26, 2014 to the com-munity about questions as to whether school will commence as scheduled on tuesday, sept. 2.
Jones says, “At the time of writ-ing, a negotiated agreement has not been reached between the british Columbia teachers’ Federation and the ministry and our teachers remain on strike. While we are planning for schools to be open on september 2nd, we also need to be prepared should an agreement not be reached. in the event that the strike continues, we will not be able to operate our schools.”
the school district, which is not involved in the current labour nego-tiations, will continue to communi-cate via their website as information becomes available:
www.sd8.bc.ca
Tuesday, Sept. 2, 12 noon at the Nelson Commons parking lot across from the Civic Theatre.
in light of the continuing inabil-ity of the Government and the teachers union to reach an agree-ment, a group of parents has decided to take matters into their own hands and have organized a march for the first day of school in support of public education. the parents feel that the government’s position of not agreeing to limits on class sizes and class composition and refusing to bargain in good faith threatens the future of the education system in bC. Gathering at the Nelson Commons parking lot (across from the Civic theatre) at 12 noon, the group will head down baker street to City hall. “We had a parent meeting and thought it was a great opportunity to send a message to the government, to have an event on the first day of school, when kids should be in class.” says Lucas myers, who started a Facebook event page for the march. “i just came home from the meeting and thought, well, its only a week away so lets get the word out. the response has been amazing.” the event page took off,
with over 1800 people invited in two days and many messages of support. myers’ stresses that this is a purely parent led initiative and is not asso-ciated with the teachers union or an organized parent association. “i think its important to make that dis-tinction, so the government is aware that it’s the parents that are trying to be heard, we are the ones that are so invested in this going forward, and that we need to find a resolution that is in the best interest of the people that this affects the most, our kids. it’s pretty clear to me that what the teachers are asking for, in terms of class size and composition and fair compensation, is going to get us there. We need to let the govern-ment know that its time to come to the table with something that will work instead of refusing to budge on their position.” he invites par-ents, kids and members of the com-munity to come down on tuesday and join the moving mosaic samba band to get their voice heard. For more information:

many of us often associate the internet with
procrastinating, and although this holds some merit, it is not absolute. there are many sites out there that not only can increase your productiv-ity, they can even teach you a new skill or two.
i’ve already mentioned one site earlier this year (ted talks), but there is more to showcase from the internet that is both informative and entertaining. one such site i visited when i was young-er that still holds relevance today is freerice.com. they essentially donate rice with every question you get cor-
rect; not only is this a fantas-tic way to feed the hungry, it’s also a great opportunity to brush up on your vocabu-lary.
As for sites that increase your workflow, a personal go to site for me is todolist.com. You can use it to list every-thing that needs to be com-pleted, as well as set dates for when it needs to be com-pleted. i use it for virtually anything, such as something as mundane as brushing my teeth to even reminding me to finish these articles. these are just some sites you may or may not find useful. use them, as you will.

The innocent are the ones being punished
By Nelson Becker
maybe the best way to give quality education to our children is to take the responsibility away from the government.
it is the innocent who get punished in this dispute between teachers and the ministry of education
school is supposed to start september 2. i do not doubt that there are real and pressing issues that must be resolved so that we can offer our children the best possible
education and still find realistic ways to settle employer/employee conflicts. Whether those conflicts are about class size, extracurricular activities, unpaid time, teachers digging into their pockets to purchase supplies, teacher aides, both sides are trying to put pressure on the other side, teachers through strike action and the ministry of education by what is perceived as not negotiating in good faith.
Children aren’t the only victims-society as a whole is a victim, both
short-term and long-term. in the short-term, parents have to deal with insufficient daycare services or alternatives to education. support workers, not involved in the dispute but are not able to cross the picket line, are also victims. in the long-term,a peaceful, constructive democracy can only be based upon a literate and educated community. While i believe that the provincial government would like to see more private schools, it might just be the best way to give reliable education to our children.

Fish Heads and Flowers
Fish Heads to the neigh-bour who gets a puppy and then leaves it alone often which causes it you cry, yelp and whine for hours. Culminating in leaving it tied to a rope - no water, blanket, food or comfort toys for 8 hours. there have been storms and there are coyotes! dogs are very social animals and this
neglect causes emotional damage! until you under-stand dogs don’t get one!
Signed: Continually disgusted!
Flowers to the person who left the comment about being gluten-free i’m with ya buddie
Signed: also gluten-free
