Rory on the townby Rory Case
Last Saturday night the Funkanomics brought the funk...all the way from
Germany! The Spirit Bar hosted the group. They played mixed genres of breaks, hiphop, ghetto funk everyone was dancing, young or old. I definitely recommend looking them up on Soundcloud and getting your groove on. https://soundcloud.com/funkanomics
A few other things I’m look-ing forward to this month include Kastle, a live DJ from California. He makes his own tracks, mash-ing up R&B-hiphop with bass and
added keyboard to garage-style tunes! Look him up on Soundcloud while you’re surfing as well:https://soundcloud.com/kastle
And if you’re looking for some live instruments check out the band Windborn, which is two guys from the Okanagan/Kootenays, who play some great alternative/groove rock music. They will be playing an intimate show at Expressions Cafe on Thursday, January 30. Check out their website and event page here:http://www.windborn.caw w w . f a c e b o o k . c o m /events/451575924967993

The West Kootenay Resource Centre offers information, educational opportunities, support groups and the ability to talk directly with a knowl-edgeable team member.

West Kootenay Traffic Services: a busy yearIn 2013 the West
Kootenay Traffic Services and West Kootenay Integrated Road Safety Unit had a very busy year. We unfortunate-ly had nine fatalities in the area. Of these nine fatalities two were alcohol related and two were pedestrian fatali-ties. The other causal fac-tors were speed, mechanical or distracted driving. Our condolences go out to the families and friends who lost loved ones.
Drinking and driving, seatbelt and distracted driving are leading factors in serious or fatal colli-sions.
This year 90 impaired drivers were taken of the road and 120 suspensions were issued in the West Kootenay Boundary area. The units served 1,430 seatbelt tickets and 325 distracted driving charges (cell phone). Drug posses-sion seems to be on the
rise with 500 drug seizures. Excessive speed charges which goes with a 7 day seizure of the vehicle is also on the rise with 63 seizures. The units served over 7,300 violation tick-ets.
The West Kootenay Traffic and IRSU units are striving to reduce crashes and injuries to our motor-ing public by enforcement and education in high crash areas. We urge all people
to slow down, buckle up, stay off the cell phone and get a designated driver. The consequences of an impaired driving charge financially and emotion-ally on an individual are tremendous.
The West Kootenay Traffic and Integrated Road Safety Unit wish everyone a happy and safe 2014.

At 2:45 a.m. on December 19, 2013 Slocan Lake RCMP respond-ed to report of a police vehicle on fire in front of the Slocan Lake RCMP Detachment in New Denver, BC. Police attended to discover the front of the vehicle fully engulfed in flames. The New Denver Fire Department attended and were able to extinguish the fire prior to it spread-ing to the detachment. No injuries were sustained as
a result of the fire, how-ever the vehicle was burnt beyond repair. The vehi-cle and scene were exam-ined; evidence obtained indicates that the fire was suspicious in nature. If you have any information regarding this incident, you are asked to call the Slocan Lake RCMP at 250-358-2223 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Despite the rise in litera-ture aimed at
teenagers and the female audience, I feel that sci-ence fiction is the most relevant of all literature. It can inspire and entertain but at the same time give the reader food for thought among other useful ideolo-gies.
Science Fiction is composed of some of the best ideas in literature con-juring incredible stories and incredible characters without the restrictions so many other genres provide. The stories present contain all of the hallmarks of a
great story but with less of the restrictions and in many cases, more artistic freedom. If you want to read a love story spanning thousands of years across time and space or if you just want a thriller set in a far off distant universe, Science Fiction has it.
Humankind has pro-vided such fascinating concepts and stores and I believe Science Fiction is the ultimate pinnacle of those achievements. Grab a book within this genre and prepare for an adven-ture you will never forget. Indulge in a bit of science fiction and get reading!

Last week’s suvrvey response:
I wish to share my message: care for each other’s families in our own community, share when you can, give when you can, take care of each other, share your smile to all in our community!
KeeP our Heritage look in Nelson. No Commons.
I wish a Wind Turbine was installed atop Nelson (Elephant) Mtn and even more green power was provided to the grid
I wish our community stays exactly the same!
Comments:
What is a positive wish you have for our community in 2014?
TheSurvey
1. Can Nelson and the West Kootenay benefit from more development?2. What kind of development does this area need?
take our survey below:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/wkdevelop
The OCP, which is short for Official Community Plan, was mandated by the pro-
vincial government some years ago. Part of its purpose is to have com-munity participation in future devel-opment issues. This is really good
because this means we have thought about future developments before we have developers come in. We can tell developers ‘no we don’t want this’ or ‘yes that fits our com-munity plan.’ If we think ahead, we can solicit development that meets our community interests.
As much as we would like, we can never think about everything, so developers will come to us with ideas we have not thought about. We must be prepared, so that they don’t push us, and we can develop into the kind of community we all want to live in.
