Film: The HusbandWednesday, Mar. 19 at 7:30 p.m., Civic Theatre

Star power steps off the Big Screen and onto the Nelson Civic Theatre stage when the Civic shows Canadian Filmmaker Bruce MacDonald’s new film The Husband. Along for the screening is principal actress and Nelson native Sarah Allen. A raw and openhearted drama about a man named Henry left to care for his infant son when his wife is imprisoned for cheating on him with a minor. THE HUSBAND takes an uncompromisingly honest look at a character rendered utterly humiliated by the person he loves.

Rory on the townby Rory Case

The lights d i m m e d , the crowd settled and

out walked Harry Manx onto the Capitol Theatre stage, last Saturday eve-ning. Immediately, I could feel his calm and collected presence. As soon as he spoke, the crowd vibrated with laughter. His stories were humorous yet enlight-ening. Accompanied by a guitarist and keyboardist, Harry delved into Eastern riffs and rock tunes. Hand,

heads, and feet moved with the music and we all smiled and laughed with Harry as he transported the audience to a musical land far, far away. His show was a mixture of upbeat instrumentals to psyche-delic melodies with lyrics of life. I’m so glad I got to his performance up close; it was a night to remember. If you haven’t heard of Harry Manx before, check out his music at:http://harrymanx.com or search him on youtube.

The future wants to curl up in your lap at the Nelson Public Library’s Technology Petting Zoo, where five new devices are available to take for a virtual walk. Set up in the Library’s lounge area, the “zoo” contains two eReaders: Kobo and Sony, and three tablets: Kobo Arc, Nexus, and iPad. The idea is to allow people who might fear the wild world of technology to get up close and comfortable with the devices that are becoming prevalent in our day-to-day lives.

expressionsNightCaféA successful film showing & three hot mammas coming soon

By Nelson Becker

L a s t week was amazing at Expressions cafe. The

Beyond Boarding evening last Saturday night was a huge success. The three young filmmakers/activists have been traveling around BC and documenting what’s happening to the environment they love to snowboard in. They presented two films; Belen and Northern Grease. The first one was about their travels in the Amazon and the second was about their adventures in BC, far up north, to become more aware of the resource extraction that is going on. They explored the topic and looked for ways to become more

environmentally friendly how we could use less energy and find alternative ways for producing energy. After the films many people stuck around to ask questions and comment. Check out their mandate and website at:www.beyondboarding.org

Next week, in addition to our successful Wednesday Open-mic, we have a special performance by the Hot Mammas on Friday, Mar. 21. Three very delightful women from Vancouver who perform great harmonies, bringing us back down memory lane. Their music is influenced by Boswell Sisters (20’s), The Andrew Sisters (40’s), The McGuire Sisters, and many more. I’m really

Is getting to work on time really

that big of a deal? I say yes, absolutely.

Although it seems that being two minutes late shouldn’t be a big deal, I feel like it is. Granted, if it is an occa-sional necessity or some-thing that simply hap-pens it isn’t that much of an issue in my opinion. Everyone is late every once in a while, life can happen.

So how do you stay punctual? First of all, take into account the weather for the day. If the weather conditions

are not optimal leave the house early, so even if you end up being 20 minutes early, it’s better then being 20 minutes late or even 5 minutes late. Secondly, if you have errands you gener-ally run prior to work try running them after or on another date if possible. Putting your job first is more important then picking up groceries.

Hopefully this advice will get your priorities in order when it comes to being more punctual. Get to work on time; it’s not that hard. Prioritize your career and make changes if needed.

Last week’s survey response:

AltHougH the violence wasn’t physical it was emotional/mental. It got the point where it sent me into depres-sion and where I had suicidal tenden-cies because it made me feel like I was not a worthy human being. I ended that relationship and haven’t had those thoughts or bouts of depression since.

FAr more women are brutalized than

any other group. To neutralize it by saying stop violence period negates this fact. Of course stop violence peri-od. ESPECIALLY STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN. Your preamble is ignorant of reality.

VioleNCe against anyone is a hid-eous crime. However, One Billion Rising should keep the slogan as is, to do

otherwise deflects from the fact that women are the primary victims of vio-lence in the world.

Cool you added transgender, i like that

i agree statistics should show vio-lence against all people as indicated above.

Comments

Have you ever been a victim of violence?If you’re a man: 71.4% YES - 28.6% NOIf you’re a woman: 87.5% YES - 12.5% NO

Gluten for punishment

The Express Survey is not a scientific survey but is intended to promote discussion in our community. The opinions presented on this page are the opinions of the author and do not represent the opinions of

the publisher or staff of the Express News Update

In today’s Kootenay community many people find themselves “gluten intolerant.” This is a new

consciousness that did not exist 20 years ago. Many people speak to that, having eliminated gluten from their diet, they feel much better.

While I eat gluten, mainly in the form of pasta, I have not noticed any difference in my body when I consume it, but we are all different.
