“Saint Peter’s Test”

A teacher, a garbage collector, and a lawyer woundup together at the Pearly Gates. Saint Peter informedthem that in order to get into Heaven, they wouldeach have to answer one question. Saint Peter addressed the teacher and asked, "Whatwas the name of the ship that crashed into theiceberg? They just made a movie about it." Theteacher answered quickly, "That would be theTitanic." Saint Peter let him through the gate. Saint Peter turned to the garbage man and, figuringHeaven didn't REALLY need all the odors that thisguy would bring with him, decided to make thequestion a little harder. "How many people died onthe ship?" Fortunately for him, the trash man hadjust seen the movie and answered, "About 1,500.""That's right! You may enter." Saint Peter then turned to the lawyer."Name them."

FROM THE PREZ:

“A Service Opportunity for us to think about-- how can WE SERVE at Ashland University?”

In the middle of our community is a large and growing group of young peopleclustered around Ashland University. The Ashland University faculty and the staffare also groups of potential community service participants. Currently our Lionsclubs do not have much presence on the Ashland University campus.

How might we interest some of these groups in community service? Sponsoringa Campus Club has been discussed but did not generate any enthusiasm. CampusClubs exist, but as we saw with our Ashland High School LEO club, they are hardto perpetuate when student leadership moves on.

Lions Clubs International also has a BRANCH Club concept. That might give usa means to expand our Club’s community service orientation into the AshlandUniversity population. Developing a BRANCH Club is said to allow expanding intonew locations. This paves the way for membership growth in areas that may not beable to support a charter Lions club.

BRANCH Club members are members in good standing of the parent club. Theypay dues. They meet regularly as a small group at a separate location and provideservice to their own community. Parent club members and BRANCH Clubmembers are encouraged to occasionally hold meetings and service projects togetheras part of their joint commitment to our WE SERVE motto.

The growing group of people clustered around Ashland University seems like agood location for Lionism. The Ashland Noon Lions already list a couple of AshlandUniversity people as members. We previously have talked about doing somethingat Ashland University, but so far nothing has worked out.

The Ashland University faculty and the staff are groups we might reach out to.Please give the possibility some thought and let me know how you think our AshlandEvening Club might approach this opportunity.

Looking ahead--please give your convention registrations to Lion Secretary BrianBaughman who also has the information on hotels.

Yours In Lionism,Lion President John Olin

FROM THE PREZ:

How can - WE SERVE - each other?

As this is written, it is a chilly grey day during the last week of a 28-day month ofFebruary. Snow is still on the ground and Lion Clint Haught is in the hospital seriouslyill. Several others in our Lions Club are suffering with less severe illnesses, which isdiscouraging. It is a good time to remember WE SERVE by helping each other.

Lions International recognizes the importance of Building Relationships. Theimportant work we all do as Lions is rarely done alone. Each of us is called on tointeract with the other Lions in our Club and our district to achieve our goals. Thisinteraction requires teamwork if it is to be successful.

Teamwork is an elusive concept. Sometimes it flows naturally. Often it takesconcerted effort on the part of all involved. One of the most important elements ofmaking that effort successful is building relationships with the Lions with whom youinteract.

In relationships, the little things are the big things. Courtesy, honesty, respect, andkindness need to be constants. These grow with familiarity. Knowing your other clubmembers and upholding each other are keys to success. Having fun together enablesworking together. Some say Lions Club members become friends for life.

That is why our club calendar includes social events and picnics. Presently Lion VPWoody Conrad is working on a bus trip to a dinner theatre during August. We also have

a standing “We Care” committee charged with encouraging our fellow Lions (andspouses) in times of difficulty.
