PASTOR’S COLUMN
This fall, I am going to be doing a sermon series on the
movies! Of all the people you know, is there anyone who
does not like to watch a movie? We all may have
different tastes and prefer different genres, but a well
made movie with a good storyline will draw us in every
time. That is why movie stars are some of our culture’s
biggest celebrities!
Jesus also knew the importance of a good storyline.
He could have done all of his teaching in a
straightforward manner, but he often chose to use stories
(or what we call parables today) in order to draw His
listeners in and engage them more with the truth of what
He was saying. Good movies do that as well today,
drawing us in with a powerful story in order to speak to us
the truth of what the filmmaker wants to say.
In September, we are going to start with the movies
“Hidden Figures” and “Sully”. If you haven’t had a
chance to see these movies yet, I encourage you to do so!
Faithfully yours,
Pastor Paul

A Message from the UCC President
What would it look like for an entire denomination to commit to a shared mission? How much impact could an entire denomination have if it worked as one on a mission that mattered? We’re about to find out. We have done this before, and not that long ago. Five years ago, the United Church of Christ launched Mission One – an initiative to help alleviate hunger. Four years ago, we launched Mission 4/1 Earth – a concentrated effort toward restoring health to the planet. This year, and for the next two years until General Synod 2019, we call the faith communities of the United Church of Christ to engage in the Three Great Loves mission campaign. In response to our Purpose statement – a call to love our neighbor as ourselves; and to our Vision statement – to build a just world for all: we are asking our congregations to seek ways to live out a commitment in mission to the love of children, the love of neighbor, and the love of creation. How does your church embody its love for children? How does your church incarnate the love of Jesus in seeking to love your neighbor? How does your church uphold the mandate to steward the Earth by demonstrating a love for creation? Together, we can change the world. United in God’s spirit and inspired by God’s grace, we can love all, welcome all, and seek justice for all: for the children, for our neighbors, and for creation. Go to 3GreatLoves.org to follow how your covenant partners are living out their commitments to the Three Great Loves – and to offer your story as an example of the Body of Christ in action, in mission. We can, we will, we must make a difference. Let our love light the way to a better world, a more just world – for the children, for our neighbor, for creation.
John C. Dorhauer General Minister and President
A Message from our Pastor of Spiritual Development…
I request that this be read and reflected upon as a congregation so that we may become more aware
of our own role in how we help or hinder doing away with anti-Semitism.
In the faith of our Jewish Ancestors, Rev. Elaine S. Gaetani
Monday, August 14, 2017
Dear Church,
The Massachusetts Council of Churches stands united with Christians across the
country sending our prayers and support to the communities and individuals impacted by the
acts of domestic terrorism in Charlottesville, Virginia. Guided by our Christian values, we
name white supremacy as idolatrous, replacing our love for God with a deification of
whiteness. We name anti-Semitism as a perversion of God's all-encompassing love and
covenant with the Jewish people.
s Christians, we have a tradition of examination, confession, and repentance. As we
denounce the events outside our state and institution, we are also called to look
within: examine, confess and repent. We renew the commitment we made last November,
and invite you to join us as we:
seek to identify and eradicate white supremacy from within our own institution,
listen to the pain within the Body of Christ and prioritize the most vulnerable parts,
and work to build a network of diverse Christians devoted to mutual need
and delight in one another
We invite you to join Rev. Daryl at the NAACP and Black Ministerial Alliance of Greater
Boston Community Debrief & Action Meeting on Tuesday August 15, 6-8pm at Roxbury
Presbyterian Church, 328 Warren St, Roxbury MA.
More events are being planned. We will be in touch again this week with more information on
how churches and communities are responding across the Commonwealth, and opportunities
for joint witness. Please, share your stories with us of what you are organizing in your town-
We give thanks for this community, and ask you to hold us and one another in prayer, as we
do for you.
In hope, Rev. Laura Everett Executive Director, Massachusetts Council of Churches

Points of Interest/Information:
- The Church received very generous bequests totaling $50,000 directed to the Permanent Funds (CSA) from the estates of Shirley and Jack Hero.

Also I set aside jewelry and items for the children’s Santa’s Workshop which is where children can shop for their family and friends. (new and gently used items) Last year was so much fun for Linda Borglund, Sandy Horton and I. It turned out to be a very successful fair with lots of Fellowship. Thanks to all of you men, women, teens and kids who contributed. We donated a lot to the Haiti Mission and to our kids’ mission trips this summer. Now is the time to start planning for the next all church fair. We need a person man or woman to run the silent auction/raffle for the fair. AROUND THE COMMUNITY
UPCOMING WORCESTER CHORUS CONCERTS
Following up on information I wrote about in the previous Evangel, I am again enthusiastically inviting you to experience some sure-to-be fantastic music in upcoming concerts by The Worcester Chorus of Music Worcester (Artistic Director: Dr. Christopher Shepard), in which I am fortunate to participate. The Worcester Chorus performs in Worcester area venues as part of the annual Worcester Music Festival, organized by Music Worcester, and tours within and outside the USA.
Venue for each of these concerts is Worcester’s magnificent Mechanics Hall. For ticket ordering, contact Music Worcester: 508-754-3231; at Mechanics Hall, 323 Main Street (Worcester); online at www.musicworcester.org – mention or enter code WORCHOR to receive a 20% discount on adult tickets. See more information online. Please check out these concerts; you will likely want to reserve the dates and mark your calendars!
*Sunday 12 November, 4:00 PM: Worcester Chorus will join with choruses of central Massachusetts – Worcester Children’s Chorus; Salisbury Singers; Master Singers of Worcester; Sounds of Stow – in a special performance of the unique and intensely moving War Requiem, by contemporary British composer Benjamin Britten. The presentation includes special guest soloists, full orchestra, chamber
orchestra, and two directors (one for each orchestra, one is also choral director). As I noted in the previous Evangel, I’m providing (here) some intriguing program notes (provided to the Chorus by a Chorus member) for you, in plenty of time for you to plan ahead for this special concert:
Britten finished his War Requiem in 1962; it was commissioned for the dedication of the then newly rebuilt Coventry Cathedral. The original 14th century St. Michael’s Coventry Cathedral in England was destroyed Nov. 14, 1940, by the German Luftwaffe during World War II. The cathedral’s wooden roof was no match for the German fire bombs and the cathedral burned to the ground, leaving only the stonework. It should be noted that some German Christians, upon learning of the cathedral’s destruction, were so dismayed that they came over to England while the war was going on, risking life and limb to help clean up and start re-building of the cathedral.
The War Requiem Op. 66 is a massive work, roughly an hour and half long. The traditional Latin texts of the Requiem are interspersed with poems written by Wilfred Owen during World War I. Owen was the commander of a rifle company, and he was killed in action in France Nov. 4, 1918, during the final week of WWI. His poetry was unknown at the time of his death, but he has since been revered as one of the great wartime poets.
The work utilizes soprano, tenor and bass soloists, mixed chorus (our performance will utilize several choirs besides the Worcester Chorus), boys’ choir (it will be the Worcester Children’s Choir), and count them: not one but two orchestras (one full orchestra and one chamber orchestra) and two conductors (more on that later)! The chamber orchestra is used for the intimate settings of English poetry while the full orchestra, soprano, and both choirs are used for the Latin texts. Planned soloists for the premiere event were Galina Vishneyskaya (a Russian), Peter Pears (an Englishman) and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (a German), to demonstrate a spirit of unity. However, close to the premiere, the Russian authorities did not permit Visneyskaya to travel to Coventry for the event. With only ten days’ notice, Heather
Harper was able to step in to perform the soprano role.
The Coventry Cathedral Festival Committee had hoped that Britten would conduct the entire piece for the premiere. However, shoulder pain forced him to withdraw, and he directed only the chamber orchestra. This started a tradition in which two conductors were used to perform the piece, this was not required and was never originally envisioned by Britten. The premiere took place May 30, 1962, in the newly rebuilt cathedral with the full orchestra being the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Meredith Davies conducting, and the Melos Ensemble as the chamber orchestra directed by Britten himself. At Britten’s request there was no applause following the premiere performance.
* Saturday 02 December, 8:00 PM: Worcester Chorus will perform the complete Messiah, by George Friderick Handel, at Mechanic’s Hall; includes orchestra and guest soloists.
* Friday 20 April 2018, 8:00 PM: Worcester Chorus will present only the second performance in the USA of Felix Mendelssohn’s arrangement of J. S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, at Mechanic’s Hall; includes orchestra and guest soloists. Again, if you can partake of these events, anticipate memorable musical experiences. Thanks! Tom Erwin
