The events that made the news in recent days remind us that we live in a world

that needs Jesus. Acts of terror in Boston, the shooting death of a Nashville student as he waited for

a school bus; natural disasters such as spring floods and violent storms;

disasters that come from carelessness or causes not related to terror, such as

the fertilizer plant explosion in Texas or the construction accident just up the road that

claimed the lives of two workers all add up reminding us that nature is crying out for redemption.

We find ourselves stunned and angry at the intentional acts of violence. We pray for and seek to provide assistance to those we can help, knowing all the while that a breaking news story is probably moments away alerting us to more tragedy. We are members of a fallen race and we live in a fallen world. It is difficult to embrace this when we are used to fixing things around us that are broken. It can be hard to reconcile those things we believe in times like these.

But this is exactly why we do the things we do as a church. From the urban core of Nashville we are called to carry the light of Christ. We reinforce this commitment each week in worship as the ancient texts intersect our cares and concerns. Almost in defiance, we sing the hymns of our faith and listen for the whisper of God bringing comfort, encouragement, correction, and hope.

These dark experiences remind us of what it means to be human. Life can turn on a dime. We are fragile, vulnerable, susceptible creatures. We make plans for our future, but we also know that those plans are subject to change.

We also have the reminder that faithfulness in the midst of life’s context is never easy, but somehow it is within our reach in community. Meals are taken to a loved one in a Sunday School class when sickness invades. Hugs and caring expressions are abundant when needed. Cards stuff the mailbox. And no one does any of this better than members of First Baptist Nashville.

In the month of May, we have many opportunities to love on our world. We once again host about 1,500 preachers from a variety of denominations for the Festival of Homiletics, a five day preaching workshop. Each of these pastoral leaders will return to his respective place of service encouraged to keep the light of Christ burning. What a privilege to be a small part of their ministry simply by being a welcoming presence. Closer to home, we salute our graduates and bless them as they seek to pursue God’s next step in life. Our new neighbor, Music City Center, opens on May 19. By the time you read this, we will have hosted the Nashville National Day of Prayer event. We will launch our summer once again with the churchwide picnic at the Joe C. Davis YMCA Outdoor Center at the end of this month. These are busy days, but they are also important days.

I say all of this to state the obvious. Live as the body of Christ. Make worship a priority. Connect and thrive in a small group in your church. In as much as it is possible, seek to live at peace with all men. Make today count for Christ.

You will find numerous ways to connect and make a difference in this issue of The Evangel. We look forward to seeing you at First Baptist Nashville.

Thanks for being a blessing!

Welcome, Owens-Hughes Family!

This is a photo of the Owens-Hughes family that is moving into our missionary residence Sunday, May 12. You may remember them from previous stays with us.

They serve in Colombia, having previously served in Brasil and Aruba, and will be with us through December. This photo is from Mikaela’s wedding last December. In the photo are: Sierra (at Union University), Debra, Mikaela, son-in-law Samuel Otavalo, Stan, Carlos (at Williams Baptist College, AR) and Zachary.

HELP NEEDED! Your help is needed to get the Mission House ready for our next guests. We’ll be doing housework, yard work, and repair work. There will be activities for all skills and talents. Come on Saturday, May 4, at 9:00 a.m. and work for a couple of hours or spend the day. Address is: 506 Greenmeadow Drive in the Cottonwood subdivision in Franklin.

Welcome to the Family!

May Collection

The Nashville Rescue Mission serves men, women, and children. Some stay one night,

some are in a program for nine months, others are in apartments for up to two years while saving money and developing good habits to be independent.

Their needs are similar —large cans of food for the mass kitchen and small toiletries for each individual. The mission fulfills an important task (caring for the poor) that the Bible commands us to do. We are thrilled with them assisting us in that purpose and now we can assist them also.

Master Plan Implementation Committee Update

The Master Plan Implementation Committee is continuing to lay the groundwork for Phase 1 of the Campus Master Plan. The

architectural sub-committee has completed several sessions with the design team from Earl Swensson Associates. Additional meetings with leadership from specific ministries within our congregation are planned over the next few weeks. The committee is also making several site visits to churches that have recently undertaken a similar master planning process.

Even though a firm decision is yet to be made on the potential property sale, the required financing is being arranged so we can move forward as quickly as possible once the scope of Phase 1 has been determined.

Please pray for our committee, your church staff, and the design team as we seek God’s direction for our present and future facilities.

Canadian Mission Trip

First Baptist Nashville is gearing up for their annual Canadian mission trip! We will visit the Canadian Southern Baptist Seminary (CSBS) for

work around the campus.

The CSBS work week is scheduled for July 15 – 20 although some may want to go a couple days early. The popular Stampede in Calgary ends June 14. If anyone wants to they can go early and go to the Stampede.

This trip is mainly for maintenance work. CSBS has projects anyone can do, including work in the Bookstore, Office, and Library. They will find something for anyone! Those on the mission trip stay in Student Housing free of charge.

( If you want to find out more about this adventure, call Joe, 615.351.8116, or Charlene, 615.758.7690.

Child Development Center Gets 3 Stars!

In January and February the Child Development Center

(CDC) had its annual licensing and assessment reviews. Licensing includes a review of all children’s and staffs’ files; reports from Fire and Health Departments; and reports from multiple unannounced visits from the DHS Program Evaluator throughout the licensing year.

The assessment process is a 4-hour observation of at least two of our CDC classrooms. Scores can go as low as a 1 (we don’t want that) or as high as a 7 (we want that!) on close to forty items including, but not limited to, space and furnishings; personal care routines; listening and talking; interaction, and program structure.

Once again, the CDC was awarded 3 Stars by the state’s Department of Human Services. In fact, this year’s score of 6.25 out of a possible 7 is the highest score the CDC has ever received.

Congratulations, CDC staff, for a job well done!

Love

I like to read the Love Chapter of the Bible, 1 Corinthians 13—Love is patient, kind, not jealous and even “trumps”

the great attributes of faith and hope in greatness! WOW! Verse 5 says that love is not provoked—love does not take into account a wrong suffered.

Love does not act improperly, is not selfish, is not provoked, and does not keep a record of wrongs.

1 Corinthians 13:5 (HCSB)

That is incredible and impressive. Love as Christ loves means I will turn my other cheek to wrongs. Only through God is this possible! He says that love never fails—really, never? Only by God! Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things and endures all things. Today I’m very, very thankful for God, for His love, and for the way He made us each to love!

I am thankful for Godly mentors and role models who taught me to love and to forget certain things that don’t help my life. This month, I am thankful that God gave me a great gift—Jackie Crow.

Jackie has distinctly remembered to forget certain things—it’s part of the reason we are here, celebrating 40 years of marriage! She has served alongside me and loved me—during my military service to the United States Army; during my seminary education to prepare us for ministry; moving to Texas, New Mexico, back to Texas, North Carolina, and Tennessee. She is my confidant and friend. She serves hundreds of women through ministry around the United States and several international countries. She has well-parented our children, especially during many times I was absent ministering to others in need. Thank you, Jackie, for 40 wonderful years!

Thank you, church family, present and past, for loving us! Thank you for helping others know love as Paul described in 1 Corinthians 13. We love you and pray the Lord’s best measure of love and care!
