THE EASTER RISING
BY ETHAN , SARAH AND DANIEL
World war 1 began in 1914.
10,000 Irish volunteers
refused to fight for Britain in
the war.
The Irish volunteers held
regular parades.
James Connolly ran the
ICA. (IRISH CITIZEN ARMY)
THE BUILD UP
On Good Friday!
The captain scuttled
the ship because it was
going into enemies
hands.
The IRB’s weapons
were on the boat.
THE BUILD UP CONTINUED
Men marched towards the GPO
(general post office) on Easter
Monday and took over it.
People thought it was only an
other parade but they thought
wrong!
They had a mixture of weapons
ranging from shot guns to rifles.
Patrick Pearse read out the
Proclamation.
THE RISING
The men also took over
other buildings such as
Jacobs Biscuit factory.
The British troops
surrounded the city.
A boat attack Liberty Hall
and two hundred British
soldiers were killed.
THE RISING CONTINUED!
On Thursday James
Connolly got seriously
wounded.
The GPO burns down.
The Irish surrendered.
INDEPENDENCE
(at last!)
CONSCRIPTION ACTThe conscription act
forced people to join the
British army ( VERY
unfair)!
It was passed because
nobody joined the army in
Ireland.
Many organisations
were against it.
The volunteers had been
fighting since the Easter
rising.
They were reorganised by
Micheal Collins.
Micheal Collins
masterminded the Irish
volunteers.
It lasted for 2 years.
THE WAR OF INDEPENDENCE
One group of soldiers were
called the black and tans
because of their colour of their
uniform.
The other group was called
The Auxiliaries.
The IRA continued to
ambush the police, the black
and tans and the Auxiliaries.
THE BLACK AND TANS
As well as the loss of life,
war damaged the Irish
Economy.
Many firms closed down and
jobs were lost.
Lloyd George, British Prime
Minister divided Ireland into 2
parliaments, Protestant and
Catholic.
PARTITION
The war started in 1922.
It ended in 1923 in May.
The Dáil debated the
treaty until the 7th of
January 1922 and decided to
accept it by 64 votes to 57.
Eamonn De Valera refused
to accept it.
