  • LECTURE PROGRAMME

50 years ago, at 20:17 UTC on the 20th July 1969, NASA astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped down from Lunar lander “Eagle” onto the surface of the Moon. He was joined 19 minutes later by NASA astronaut and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin. Meanwhile, their colleague, Michael Collins, remained alone in lunar orbit as pilot of command module “Columbia”, the taxi waiting to take them back home.

NASA had fulfilled the goal of “landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth before the end of the decade”.

NASA is now preparing for the Artemis programme to return humans, in particular women, to the moon by 2024.

This is the story of how NASA stepped up to the enormous challenges it was exposed to and what is next in the history of human space flight.
