P A G E 2

We try new initiatives. Sometimes they succeed.

Sometimes they don’t. We learn from both

outcomes.

One year ago, we conceived a new idea on how

to invigorate our evening Minyan on Tuesday,

Wednesday and Thursday evenings. We had

completed a year in which the Minyan was

moribund. One year later, the evening before my

writing this article, without any evening activities

scheduled in the synagogue, we had a wonderful

service including some thirteen daveners. It

wasn’t standing room only but it was a Minyan

plus three and I call that a success.

At the conclusion of each evening service, I say

Yasher Koach to the person leading the Minyan

and I thank everyone who is part of our Count

Me In program. This program has been at the

center of our success this year. It has been a

relatively rare evening when we did not reach a

Minyan and even then we came close. There were

more evenings when we approached or exceeded

twenty or so daveners. The service takes on a

special spirit as more voices join together in

prayer.

Those who became part of the Count Me In

program took on the obligation of attending three

services during the course of the year. We

assigned each participant three dates based on

which evening of the week worked best for them.

Many thanks to Paula Segal for communicating

with each participant regarding their three dates

over the course of the following months. Thanks

to members of our Religious Committee who

volunteered to be a “Minyan Captain” for a given

service each month. Thanks to our roster of

Minyan leaders who conduct the services each

evening. I periodically lead the service but I mostly

have the luxury of being just another Jew in the pew

(though we have very comfortable individual padded

chairs instead of pews in the ATM Chapel). And

much thanks to the many members of our

community who signed up to be part of this initiative

and fulfilled everything they signed up for. It is clear

to me that a number actually came to considerably

more than the three to which they were originally

committed.

My general impression is that those part of the

program have felt very positive about it. They made

a commitment and fulfilled it. That’s a good feeling.

They saw that by their presence, there was a full

Minyan of ten and so all elements of the service

could be included. Without a Minyan, there are

certain prayers that can not be said aloud and so

along with the too many empty seats, there is the

feeling that something is missing. There is a good

feeling knowing that those in the year of mourning

can recite Kaddish in memory of their loved one in

the presence of a Minyan of ten and those who

come to observe a Yartzheit for a loved one can do

the same. The service is relatively brief, fifteen to

eighteen minutes depending on the tempo of the

leader so it is not an overly cumbersome

commitment. At the same time, one has to make

plans to be home from work at a certain time, have

dinner before or after and sometimes go out on an

especially cold or stormy evening. It is not a small

thing.

I had a certain hesitancy about writing this article.

There is an expression “Don’t give it a “Kin Ayin

Harah” which loosely translated means don’t jinx it

by boasting how great it is. So let it be clear. I am

not boasting but expressing my thanks and

appreciation for everyone who made our Count

Me In the success it has been.

My hopeful anticipation is that our participants this

year will sign on for another year. I additionally

hope we can grow the number of participants so

our Minyan will grow even stronger and more

spirited. If for any reason you were not part of our

Count Me In initiative this year, I hope you might

possibly consider becoming part of this group in the

year to come.

I hope you are enjoying a great summer and as the

saying goes … See you in September.

As seen at the Annual Meeting

P A G E 3

If you were able to join me at the Leadership

Training Institute’s program in May or at the

recent congregational meeting, then you had the

opportunity to see an amazing video that captured

Ohev Shalom’s first five years. I had heard

numerous times about the founders of Ohev and

how our community began. But to see it through

pictures and old newspaper clips, made it come

alive. It was unbelievable to see and hear about

the love and devotion that went into building our

community 41 years ago. Enormous thanks goes

to Rabbi Perlstein and Ohev’s founding members

for the tenacity and determination that they

demonstrated in 1976 and the years that followed.

Because of their passion and effort, we are here

together in 2017, as a strong, vibrant, inclusive

community.

The commitment that our members exhibited in

1976 is stronger than ever today. You, our

congregants, continually display your belief and

commitment through all that you do. We are

truly a community that is volunteer-driven and our

strength is based upon the time, creativity, and

effort that you put into every project and event that

we undertake. The “Count Me In” Minyan initiative

and the Leadership Training Institute are just two

examples of the successful programs that we had

this year and exemplify what we can do when we

unite together. We made our evening minyan a

community priority and with your help, we have

been present for each other and those in times of

need. Under the leadership of Dani Shylit our Ohev

leadership training institute, started by Hal Barrow

many years ago, was reignited. It was a year-long

project where Dani, and a team of new congregant

leaders, met to learn about Ohev, its rich history,

and build upon their leadership skills.

This year has been one full of memorable moments,

programs, and events. I am so proud of who we are

at Ohev Shalom and how, in everything that we do,

we set ourselves apart as a congregation that is

focused on togetherness, being present for one

another, and honoring one another for both are

similarities and differences.

Dear Friends at Ohev,

As I come to the end of my tenure as Building Chair, many thoughts of the past six years are

beginning to surface. The many meetings with Rabbi Perlstein, Cantor Paul and Cantor Annelise

Ocanto-Romo, the Board of Directors, the current and past presidents and all of the board members

that I have become close with over this time. The professional office staff and the maintenance staff -

I assure you that if I had not stepped up to the position, I would hardly know any of them today. Hal

Barrow, Barry Klein, Rachel Saks and Dana Podob would not have made it into my thinking and that

would have been my deep personal loss. I am very thankful that I have made relationships with all of

them. I could name names all day and night and surely leave out someone, so I will not go that route.

I am grateful for the time when my son Marc and I were on the Board at the same time; that was a

first for Ohev. Needless to say that was a point of personal pride.

I have often told my wife, Libby (Biggest supporter) that my joy in serving emanated from two

different places in the building, The Early Learning Center (Babies) and the Sanctuary (Communal

prayer). Both places have given me the drive to do the very best that I could do for my position as

building chair.

When I think of all of the things that I have been involved in I know that I have touched all corners of

the building complex, and yes, the roof too. I always said that I love to fix things and Ohev gave me

plenty of opportunities. I have gained joy, understanding, love and security from volunteering my time

at Ohev and all said and done, I would do it again. I highly encourage volunteering not because of

personal enrichment, but by helping to enrich the lives of others.

In final, I will leave you with this adage that I follow, "It's not how much time you put in, but how

much you put in your time that matters".

Respectfully,

David

Shalom Award Dave Weiss

Dear Rabbi, Cantors, Friends, and Family,

I am so honored to have been selected to receive the Shalom Award. Thank you to Rabbi and the

committee. Thanks also to my family, especially my husband, Greg, for graciously supporting the time

and energy spent in my volunteer activities. I love when this building is filled with warmth and positive

energy whether during services, or learning or a fun-filled event, especially knowing that I have done

my part to help make it a success. I did not expect to be honored for doing what I love with my

Ohev Shalom community.

When Greg and I moved to this area over 20 years ago, we were looking for a warm and friendly

family synagogue. We found it at Ohev Shalom and met some of our best friends here. Our children

Steven, Heather, and Jonathan attended the religious school, became Bar and Bat Mitzvah and

attended confirmation.

After hearing the inspiring story of a woman who started a Torah study group at her shul in Maryland,

Janie Perlstein and I started the Women’s Torah Study Group here at Ohev Shalom. Janie provided

the direction and the format for our discussions. The group still learns together on Tuesdays at noon

and I invite any interested women to attend. No prior knowledge necessary.

Another activity to stretch my brain was learning to chant Torah. I joined a class given by Cantor

Frimark to learn the trop and have been working at it for the past 10 years. Going on two Israel trips

with Ohev Shalom has been a highlight of our Ohev experiences. We thoroughly enjoyed traveling

with our Ohev community, making lasting friendships and wonderful memories.

As the children grew up, I became more active in the Sisterhood, attending functions, and holding

various positions on the board. Eventually, I became co-president of Sisterhood along with Iris Segal.

We made a great team for two years and an even greater team when Hedy Hoffman joined us for the

third year. As a past president, I still love working with my sisters in Sisterhood.

Two inspiring quotes from Pirkei Avot come to mind:

- “The world stands upon three things – upon Torah, upon service of G-d and upon acts of loving

kindness.”

- "You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist from it."

Thank you again for honoring me with the Shalom Award.

Respectfully,

Ayala Rahimi - Social Action Chair

My family and I have been members of Ohev Shalom for the past 20 years. Our children were B’nai

Mitzvot and confirmed at Ohev and our son was married under the chuppah here as well. Matt and his

wife Danielle live in Philadelphia. Our daughter Arielle made aliyah, served in the Israeli Defense Forces

and was recently married in Israel. She and her husband Lior live in Jerusalem.

Ohev provided us with a real connection to other Jewish families in Bucks county and created a true

community for us as a family.

I am a social worker at a special needs high school providing individual and group counseling services to

students with behavioral disorders. I am passionate about many social action causes and in particular feel

that the board position of social action should actively deal with Israel engagement. I look forward to

connecting our membership with Israel on unique exciting levels as well as performing important acts of

Tikkun Olam.

Ohev Board of Directors Thank you for

Marnie Dratch – Education Chair

Marnie, along with her husband Barry and three sons, has been a member of Ohev Shalom for 19 years.

She has been Education Chair for the past 3 years and Second Vice President for the past year. She has

been a Language Arts teacher in NJ for 23 years and has a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership.

Marnie loves being involved in many aspects of synagogue life and spending time with her Ohev family.

Rachel Betesh - Hebrew School PTO Chair

For almost 10 years my family has been a part of the Ohev community. My 3 girls all went through the

Early Learning Center and are now part of the Religious School. This is home to us. When I am not at

Ohev, you can find me taking morning walks with friends, checking out new vegetarian restaurants and

counting down the days until I return as Pool Director at Camp Green Lane (along with my 3 happy

campers).

Oral History Project

The Ohev Shalom Leadership Institute collected stories from the first five years of Ohev Shalom’s rich history to share with our community

and preserve for years to come. To do this, we reached out to those members who were congregants in the late 70's and early 80's when

our synagogue was just getting started to lend their voices to this significant work. These members participated in an interview panel at a

special event on Sunday morning, April 30, 2017 at Ohev Shalom, led by the emerging leaders from the Ohev Shalom Leadership Institute.

The Leadership Institute was directed by Danielle Shylit and the oral history project conducted by Dani Becker, Jonathan Becker, Stuart

Cheifetz, and Aliza Feldman.

Men’s Club

As we relax in the lazy days of summer, the Men’s

Club Board is planning some exciting and new

programs for the upcoming year.

Last year our events ran the gamut from political

forums to sports to scams and frauds. This year

there will be more and different events.

We will still be having our famous breakfasts, our

Scotch & Steak dinners, and our Torah on Tap,

but we will also be doing some intimate

programming.

The Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs has a

program entitled “Hearing Men’s Voices”. Under

this program, men come together to discuss issues

that they have and that they would be more

comfortable discussing in a conversation with their

peers. The groups will be small and will be led by

a facilitator familiar with the issues. There will be

a number of structured and unstructured sessions,

perhaps in the evenings perhaps on a Sunday

morning, where we need not be apprehensive

about speaking up or asking questions. We can

feel comfortable discussing some personal issues

because, we’re sitting among friends. This will be a

“no judgment zone” and strictly limited to the men.

Every member might not be interested in each topic,

which is fine, because generally, these groups are

small; perhaps a dozen or so at most. One of the

topics is called “Work and Worth”. Are you what

you do? Are you more than your daily work

routine? Is your legacy going to be that you were a

“great latex salesmen”, or you were a Mensch?

Let’s see how we do. I hope you will branch out

with us into this new area for the Men’s Club.

Our first breakfast meeting will be September 17th,

with the Annual Membership Dinner soon after.

Please send in your membership information. Our

dues will stay the same for this year, just $45.

When you send in your dues, please tell us what

areas you’d like to explore with us and which areas

you’re able to help with. We always need

volunteers to help not only the club, but Ohev in

general. The Men’s Club is a vibrant part of Life at

Ohev. Don’t be left behind.

Presidents’ Message

I am thrilled to serve

as the new Co-President

of Ohev Shalom’s

Sisterhood.

I look forward to three

exciting years ahead of

us, as we welcome many

returning and new

women into our

sisterhood and develop new programming. Ohev

Shalom has been my family’s home for the past 27

years. I met so many of my dearest

friends through this congregation. Both of my

daughters Stacie and Carla are graduates of the

Ohev Shalom preschool and Hebrew school and

became B’nai Mitzvah here. My husband Stuart is

a long-time member of the Ohev Choir and

participated in various Ohev Productions. I myself

have been an Ohev pre-school teacher, as well as

involved in and chaired many committees

throughout the years, and most recently, I have

served as the Ways and Means Vice President of

Sisterhood. I cannot wait to begin this next

chapter as an integral part of our special

This is NOT a fundraiser but an opportunity for WLCJ members, from several local regions,

including our Mid-Atlantic Region, to come together to share an enhanced touring experience,

led by Margie, who will be our docent.

We will meet at the Memorial Plaza at 10:30 am where Margie will take a few minutes to talk about the

twin memorial pools and how the names were organized, the Survivor Tree, and a little historical

information. We will then proceed to the museum, where the average visit lasts 2½ to 3 hours.

Tickets are $24.00 per Adult, $18 for Seniors 65+

Make checks payable to: Women’s League for Conversation Judaism

Send to: Ohev Shalom 944 Second St Pike, Richboro PA 18954 Attn: Sisterhood

For more information, contact Sandy Blumenthal at [email protected].

FIRM deadline to RSVP is August 25th

Please inform Sandy when you have reserved your space. She will maintain a list to aid those who wish to

travel with others from their area. Ideas are to meet together at Hamilton Train Station or a bus may be

arranged if there is enough demand. Please note that although there will be no arranged meal, there are

several nearby options to enjoy at the conclusion of the tour.

I want to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you. Whether you came out to minyan, volunteered on a

committee, served in a leadership capacity, donated to our Annual Appeal/endowment campaign, or came to an event or

Shabbat service, we are stronger because of you and your commitment. Each one of us makes Ohev Shalom the unique

community that it is and we should all take enormous pride in our past, celebrate our present, and be excited about our

future.

Wishing you all a wonderful summer ahead and looking forward to being with you soon.

B’Shalom,

Rachel
