There is an expression that is often said at the end
of the Jewish year and in anticipation of the
next. The expression goes something like “may
the curses of the past year depart and be replaced
with blessings for the new year.”
As I look back over this past secular year, I feel
pretty happy, satisfied, grateful and content. Yes,
on a national and global level there have been
much that troubles us along with horrible
tragedies. There is more than much to correct
and heal domestically and internationally. On that
scale, we can say “may the curses of the past year
depart and be replaced with blessings in 2019.
We surely can not and must not separate
ourselves from the world around us but on a
purely personal level, I do feel all that I express
above.
What I hope for most is what I have hoped for
over the past decade or so, the status quo. I
could never have said this in my teens, twenties,
thirties or forties. I was hoping for more in this
way or that. Not so much today. I have not
become complacent. Far from it. I surely find
challenges and goals to meet and even exceed but
I feel deeply the teaching of the sage Ben
Zoma who asks “Who is rich? One who is
satisfied with his portion.” One of the secrets of a
rich life, as I have often noted in the past, is to be
content with the content of our lives.
If I have one complaint of 2018, it is too much of a
cliche to even mention it. It went by way too fast.
Could the pages of the calendar turn a bit
slower? Or maybe not. Good times go by swiftly.
Bad times seem to never end. If you enjoy the
warmth more than the cold, summer flies by and the
winter seems forever. On second thought, I guess
I’ll be happy with another quick year.
Our hopes for 2019 have to do with our stage of
life. How much I enjoy talking to little children,
teenagers, those applying to college, those beginning
careers, anticipating marriage, starting a family,
naming their children, growing their families and
professional lives and the list goes on. It would be
fascinating to ask them each to summarize their
hopes for 2019 in a sentence or two. For me, I’ll
stick with what I expressed above. For our country
and the world, may curses be replaced by blessings.
There is a whole lot to unpack in that one sentence.
For Janie and me, I hope and pray for the status quo.
With that, I will be very happy.
To you and your family, whatever the worthy wishes
of your hearts be, I wish you all good things in 2019.

I hope that everyone is enjoying this wonderful
holiday season.
Our security has become a major project for our
team at Ohev. I am so fortunate to have such a
special group of people who are so dedicated to
helping to work towards evaluating our security
needs.
Below is the write up that I sent to the
congregation. I feel this is such important
information that I wanted to make sure that it was
included in every correspondence that we have
sent out. It has been emailed, mailed and now it is
here in the Dove Tale. Our goal is to keep you
updated on what we are doing to protect you, our
congregant family.
We have invested considerable time and
resources since the tragedy in Pittsburgh working
on a plan to further protect Ohev and our
congregants. As you know, Ohev had many
security procedures in place prior to this
occurrence, but, given the current climate, we
believe we need expand our security protection.
As noted in my previous emails, we are now
keeping the doors locked at all times, and
congregants are required to use their FOBs to
enter the building. If you still do not have your
FOB please contact Hilary in the office at
[email protected] or call her at 215-322-9595. As
an additional layer of protection, we have engaged
a security company to provide a security guard on
premises for shabbat services, Hebrew School
sessions, and major events. We appreciate your
patience and cooperation as the security guard
helps us to ensure that only authorized individuals
access our premises when larger groups are
present.
We have begun teacher and staff training on
procedures that they need to follow to protect
our precious children and congregation in an
emergency situation. We hope this will never be
the case, but we all need to know what has to be
done and be prepared just in case.
These additional security measures come at a
significant cost, which cannot be covered by the
synagogue’s annual budget either this year or going
forward. Funds from dues and the generosity and
support of our members through the Annual Appeal
are critically necessary to fund our current facilities
and programs, but they will not be sufficient to fund
the additional security for those facilities and
programs.
As part of the evaluations and implementation of the
above security measures, the officers and board of
directors have explored a variety of financing
solutions. Consistent with the approach by
many other synagogues, Ohev will need to
begin charging each Ohev family unit a
security fee of $18.00 per month. Since
2018/2019 is already underway, the charge
will be reflected in your bills that are due
January 1st through May. Once the new
billing cycle (2019/2020) begins in June the
charge will be for a 10-month period that is
consistent with our billing cycle.
Please understand that the security fee was never
anything that we envisioned or wanted to have to
do, but our Mission is to care for our Ohev
community in every possible way. Unfortunately, in
today's world, that means taking extraordinary
efforts to protect our people whenever they are in
synagogue.
We thank you for working with us on this. We are
continuing our efforts to make Ohev as secure a
place for our congregant families as we can.
As always if you have any questions, please feel free
to contact me at [email protected].
I wish everyone a very happy and healthy 2019.
Best Regards,
Dana

The famous American author and motivational speaker, Dr. Leo
Buscaglia, Ph.D., reminds us that "Change is the end result of all
true learning," and that "Your talent is G-d's gift to you; what you
do with it is your gift to G-d." No truer words describe our
January Congregant of the Month, Jahn Nolan.
An Army brat, by the time he reached his senior year of high
school, Jahn had attended fourteen schools in four different
countries. He entered Trenton State College as a music major and
graduated seven years later with a degree in psychology. Between
music and psychology, he volunteered for three years in the Army,
got married, and had a son. His first marriage ended in divorce in
1979.
He then began a new life as a sheet metal worker at C.W. Hayden,
Inc., fabricating prototype parts mostly for electronic equipment.
Always one to continue learning, Jahn studied programming and
computer science at night school and retired as IT manager at the
very same company about four years ago.
In 1981, at a Parents Without Partners dance, Jahn met Eileen, the
girl of his dreams. They were engaged two weeks later and
married three months after that. Her son was about to become a
Bar Mitzvah, and Jahn was invited to attend the services at Shir
Ami. He immediately fell in love with the liturgy and the
music. Having little connection with any one specific country,
religion, or culture, he asked Eileen if he might adopt hers.
The first task was to find a synagogue to call theirs. They met
Leslie and Marv Kreithen at a Jewish Marriage Encounter function,
who were happy to recommend a small shul in Richboro. They
first attended services at Ohev during the final “Year of the Tent.”
Our own Rabbi Eliott Perlstein was ordained that same year. Jahn
and Eileen attended their first Ohev High Holiday Service together
at Maple Point High School with Marv Feld, Z" L, serving as Cantor;
the Nolans have been fixtures at Ohev Shalom ever since.
Becoming a "Jew by Choice" requires many hours of study and
dedication. Jahn took this to the highest level, and his efforts were
recognized and acknowledged by an invitation to serve on the
Ritual Committee even before his actual conversion. He went to
the mikvah a year after having met Eileen. A few years later. he and
Max Adelsberg, Z” L, became the gabbaim at Ohev, positions
formalized with the first amendments to our by-laws.
Jahn "wanted like crazy" to be part of the Adult (Bat) Mitzvah class
but was denied; women only! Eileen was in that Adult Bat Mitzvah
class in 1983. He did receive a Bar Mitzvah certificate, thirteen
years after conversion, in February of 1996, and this loving and
inseparable couple was confirmed together in 2009.
On Shabbat mornings Jahn leads parts of the preliminary service
and Pesukey De-zimra. Before the Kaddish D’Rabbanan is a little
Torah learning that over the years has developed into what he calls
the "Kibble Torah." At some point he decided to publish the kibble
through an e-mail address, [email protected], in order to
invite correction or criticism. He claims to have had several
hundred “critics," but those of us who have had the pleasure of
reading his words or hearing them at services are aware and
appreciative of his scholarly contributions to our community.
Jahn considers himself to be a Reconstructionist, a la Mordecai Kaplan;
committed to tradition yet open to change. He exemplifies this in the
colorful, thematic kippot and ties he dons through the seasons, and in
the joyous way he calls people to the Torah, adding a personalized
descriptor when the situation warrants it. But it is the loving way that
Jahn performs his duties as one of the gabbaim, ensuring that the
Torah is being read and treated respectfully and accurately, that
defines him and his contributions to Ohev Shalom.
To Jahn, if you don’t know about history, it’s as if it never existed; a
tragic loss. He feels that the best way he can give back to his
community is through service. When asked, he almost always
complies; when told, he almost always demurs. Jahn would like us to
know the following: "It has been my honor to serve as your gabbai
for the last three plus decades along with Max, Uri, Dave, Fran and
Allan. I wish to thank the “powers that be” for the honor of
Congregant of the Month, but please know that the reward to me in
friendship and community is beyond measure."

Caring Initiative
I am honored to introduce you to the Caring Initiative being started in 2019 at Ohev Shalom.
The goal of this initiative is to help members who are sick know that we as a community care about them
and support them on their path to recovery. Caring for those who are not well is a core aspect of Jewish
values, with the specific mitzvah for visiting the sick known as bikkur cholim.
Ohev Shalom has some great examples of this value and through their efforts many in need at Ohev have
received excellent support over the years. Yet there is a desire to develop a more clear access point and
coordinated approach across our membership so that everyone can feel our collective concern and well
wishes. We certainly recognize that some people will want their illness treated with extreme
confidentiality, which we fully respect, and as a result this may not be the initiative for them. But for
others in which awareness of their illness is acceptable, we will treat this information with appropriate
sensitivity and look to support as possible.
We have created an email address, [email protected], and are using the main synagogue phone number
(215-322-9595) for individuals to alert us that a congregant has fallen ill and is willing to have their
information passed on discretely to volunteers with what support needs that they may have. We will
subsequently reach out to them to express our concern and well wishes, ensure that we have their
information to include them in the prayer for healing or mi shebeirach, and provide any other support that
is available.
If you would like to volunteer to support this initiative, please send an email to [email protected] with
your contact information and what support that you would be willing to commit to as part of a pool of
volunteers. Volunteering for this initiative would be greatly appreciated and hopefully would offer you
tremendous personal benefit in knowing that you helped those in great need.

JEWS IN OPERA For the last 230 years Jews have been involved in opera from writing librettos, composing music, singing and production. This does not
include operas written about Jews and Judaism. Every once in a while we have an opera written by a Jew, about Jews and performed by
Jews. During an hour and a half we will look at some of these with emphasis on the last category. Operas will be illustrated with video
examples. Led by Michael M. Eisman, Ph.D., a retired professor of history from Temple University. While basically an ancient

Women’s Torah Study Group
Get together monthly to kibbitz and discuss the
meaning and relevance of upcoming Torah and
Haftarah portions. Meetings are held at 12:30 pm
on the third Tuesday of the month unless it’s a
Jewish holiday. These informal study sessions are
facilitated and hosted by various group members but
volunteering to facilitate or to host is not a
requirement for participation. Participants are
encouraged to bring a dairy lunch. Any woman
interested in being added to the e-mail distribution
announcing meeting times and topics should contact
[email protected]. Next meeting - Jan 15th.
Membership
Phyllis and I would like to thank Linda Springer for
assisting us in doing our membership per capita for
Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. WLCJ
has over 90 years of experience as the source for all
sisterhood needs, and they continue to provide
informative publications and handy resources
directly into our hands who run our sisterhoods.
But most importantly, with a phone call or email, we
can speak directly to one of the many experienced
and skilled volunteers and directors for first-hand
personal assistance no matter what the issue. What
a phenomenal resource they provide to our
sisterhoods that gets passed on to each of our
members. B’shalom,
