Through the cooperation of all, our students shall acquire

the knowledge, wisdom, and ethics, which will

enable them to be successful contributors in a democratic society.

Ortona Happenings

Ortona Elementary School is a Title I school.

This means that we receive federal money based on the number of students who receive free and reduced

meals. This money is used to improve the academic

achievement of our students. The money is used to implement programs, activities, and increase

parental involvement. Activities and programs are planned and implemented with the participation of

parents and students. Title I Schools’ Parent

Contacts are responsible for coordinating parent involvement activities. Ann Strader, our Title I

Parent Contact, works directly with the PTA and School Advisory Council to plan activities for our

students.

In the fall, Ortona Elementary was fortunate enough to have two outside agencies provide health

services to our students based on our Title I status. Students in fourth and fifth grade classes

participated in Vision Quest, a mobile vision clinic

that prides themselves on insuring academic and social success for children in need of eyeglasses.

They provided free vision exams and two sets of new glasses for at risk children in need of vision

care with parent approval. Additionally, students in

our second grade classes participated in a Florida Health Department grant where they received free

preventative oral health care from a licensed dentist with parent permission. Children were taught how

to clean their teeth and then had their teeth sealed if

necessary. Many thanks to these wonderful outside agencies that are helping Ortona students be

successful in and out of the classroom!

Finally a fundraiser that you’llwant to participate in!

Buy your gift cards for the holiday season!

Our Gift Card Fundraising Program is off and running! We have several staff members and families that have already begun to take advantage of this great fundraiser! Buy what you want, when you want. No fees, no difficulties. Just a great way to help out the Ortona PTA. Remember, our fundraisers help to fund programs that benefit your kids! This fundraiser will be ongoing all year.  You have the opportunity to help us over and over again, reload gift-cards, or send e-cards.  The choice is yours.  Please keep us in mind for holiday purchases.

Sign up for your FREE account, by going to www.shopwithscrip.com You must have an enrollment code to get started.  Ortona Elementary’s enrollment code is ea6d42fb3ll6l If paying by check, orders are typically placed on Monday afternoons with delivery Friday.  Checks must be returned to PTA via “THE BOX” for us to place your order.  However, with routing numbers, you can place the order using Presto Pay and it would automatically deduct the funds from your bank account. Informational flyers are posted to the PTA website (www.ortonapta.com) for your review.  If you have any questions, please email us at [email protected]

THREE FOR ME

Three for Me helps the school organize and effectively communicate its needs to parents, and welcomes all families into the school as partners in creating a better learning environment for children.

By making the Three for Me promise and dedicating three hours of your time to the school over the course of the school year, you can strengthen the partnership between home and school for your child’s benefit.

If you are interested in Three for Me, please contact us at [email protected]

Counselor’sCorner:

Welcome back to school students! Our guidance activities will continue at a brisk clip at Ortona Elementary. Intermediate grades are working through the ten week Too Good For Drugs program and primary grades are learning about bullying and how to befriend other children.

I will be seeing all new students in Newcomer Groups this month. This includes students who entered Ortona Elementary from September through this month. This one time group helps students meet other new students and realize they are not alone. We talk about their old school and the things they like about their new school.

As always, if I can help you with your child please call 258-4668 x 51925 to talk with me. My days at school are Tuesday & Friday from 7:30-2:30 and Wednesday from 9-12:30. I would be happy to help in any way that I can.

GRADE LEVEL NEWS

Our third grade students have been extremely excited to learn about multiplication and division. As we start the new semester, our focus will move onto Geometry. Students will be learning about lines, angles, and polygons. This unit is extremely rich in vocabulary. Please talk to them about what we are doing in class. As they teach you about their new found skills, they are implementing these new terms into their long term memory. Your child should be reading nightly to build their reading fluency and comprehension. Talk with your child about what they are reading. Thank you for your continued support.

We hope that everyone enjoyed a wonderful holiday season. Parents don’t forget that if you are paying for our upcoming St. Augustine field trip in installments the second installment is now due. Our trip to St. Augustine is always one of the high points of our year. Fourth graders are fast becoming great writers. They work hard every day at acquiring the skills they need to become better. We are learning all about similes, adjectives, onomatopoeia, maintaining a writing focus and other exciting skills. Mrs. Bowles and Mrs. Wisneski are very proud of all the hard work our fourth graders are doing.

We have been hard at work this nine weeks! In math we are in our division unit, and will move next into decimals. In science we completed our study of weather and are now learning all about matter!

In January we are looking forward to jumping into our science fair projects!

Several parents have asked for information regarding community resources available to our families. Each month we will highlight a resource that you may find of value for yourself, a family member, or even a neighbor.

There are many resources in our community for families going through hard times. With an unemployment rate of 10.9%, Volusia County has been particularly hard hit with job loss, which drastically impacts families. The United Way’s First Call for Help is a number to contact if you need help with housing, jobs or food – that number is 1-877-253-9010 or locally 253-0563.

More people are depending on Food Stamps to stretch their food budgets than ever before. 1 in 7 Americans depends on food stamps to supplement their grocery bill. You may apply online at www.myflorida.com. Click on the large access food tab to go through the worksheet and see if you qualify. If you qualify, you can apply online. It takes about six weeks to process your application. However, if you qualify, you will receive food stamps back to the date that you applied. Your level of income must be at or below 130% of the poverty level which works out to the following:

1 person - $1,174

2 people - $1,579

3 people - $1,984

4 people - $2,389

Also, Harvest Time International, a store located on 3350 S. Ridgewood Avenue sells expired cereal, canned goods, snacks and coffee at very reasonable prices. It costs $5 to join and you must fill out an application to apply. Once approved, you can shop as often as you want. They do not carry cold food items at this point but hope to expand to include cold food items. Harvest Time International has a store in Sanford that carries cold food items.
