FORWARDWhen I first joined the Dogecoin community, it was through Reddit. For years I had silently watched digital currency, specifically Bitcoin, from the sidelines while I waited for my moment to jump into the mix. I was always intrigued by the idea of a transparent, global currency but I never knew how to get involved.

One day, after the infamous Mt.Gox collapse, I decided to take a leap into digital currency head first by buying Bitcoin through Coinbase.com and exchanging it for Dogecoin. There was a major flaw in the system though. The process was far too complex for the average person to get involved. I had no direction and no idea how to navigate the confusing concepts of digital currency as a whole. I took it upon myself to learn this world. Once I understood the complexity of the process, I made it my mission to translate that process to new users of Dogecoin. My mindset was this: the more people that understand how to use Dogecoin, the better my investment will be.

I would scour reddit.com/r/Dogecoin/new, trying to be the first person to answer questions throughly from new and confused members; attempting to make a name for myself in my beloved little corner of the internet. After doing this for months, I was able to create FAQ guides that I could simply copy/paste into the comment section. This sped up the process immensly and made my job much easier.

Now, I’ve moved forward with my community activity. I’m a moderator of reddit.com/r/dogeducation, a subreddit devoted to teaching users and answering questions about Dogecoin. It’s a “customer service” role that’s desperately needed.

Today I still do my best to answer questions as quickly as possible. However there’s a need for a guide to exist when I’m not around. Other users have done a great job of being proactive, and reddit.com/r/dogeducation is a phenomenal resource, but a compiled guide is also needed.

This guide will grow with revisions as time goes on, but the goal is for it to be a resource for any users lost in the confusing world of crypto. As you thumb through this guide I encourage you to take notes for the 2nd Edition and reach out to me on reddit.com/r/DogecoinSurvivalGuide. Thank you.

When someone is asking questions, sometimes short answer don’t cut it. This guide is for confused users walking through the Dogecoin process. Education is the key to the success of this digital currency.

WHAT IS DOGECOIN?Dogecoin is a fun, new and rapidly growing form of digital currency.

Dogecoin is a fun, new and rapidly growing form of digital currency. This form of digital currency is called “cryptocurrency”; a type of digital currency.Cryptocurrency is completely anonymous, decentralized, and extremely secure.

Dogecoin is used with a wallet on your computer, your smartphone, or a website. You can use it to buy goods and services, or trade it for other currencies (both other cryptocurrencies or traditional currency like US dollars).

One of the most popular uses for Dogecoin is “tipping” fellow internet-goers who create or share great content. Think of it as a more meaningful “like” or upvote, with real value that can be used all across the internet.

“Doge” is our fun, friendly mascot! The Shiba Inu is a Japanese breed of dog that was popularized as an online meme and it represents Dogecoin.

Offline wallets are by far the safest way to keep your currency. With digital currency, no one controls your money except you. Download the official software and store your DOGE safely and securely.

After downloading the wallet of your choice, make sure you back up your files on a USB drive or external hard drive. After you back it up, never delete the wallet.dat file!

Think of an Excel spreadsheet. This represents the “blockchain”. Every wallet addresss has a cell devoted to the amount of Dogecoin inside. When a user sends Dogecoin to another wallet address, the cells adjust to reflect their new balance.

When recieving Dogecoin, all the user has to do is provide their public address. Other users can then send money to the address and the blockchain will confirm the transaction.

TIPPING DOGECOINTo send and recieve Dogecoin via Twitter, Facebook and Reddit, you need to set up a wallet with each “tipping bot”. This wallet will hold your coins, and send them to another user if commanded.

MINING DOGECOINMining is how new Dogecoins are created. Mining uses the Scrypt key derivation algorithm to prove a Proof of Work, or a way to prove that you’ve actually mined what you claim you’ve mined. Mining a block can be likened to cracking a password for that block (the process is very similiar).

There are two types of mining: Pool Mining and Solo Mining

Pool Mining is the easiest way to mine Dogecoin, as it combines the hashrate of every user in the pool to solve blocks. When a block is broken, the reward is split among the entirety of the pool. For a full list of Dogecoin pools, visit dogepool.com

Solo Mining is much harder, as your hashrate is incredibly low. But when you break through a block, you keep the entire reward for yourself. Make sure you have a very high hashrate before solo mining.

CPU mining is dangerous for your computer if not done correctly and is not recommended. The difficulty has increased quite a bit. Mining with a CPU is not as profitable.
