1 Clinical Trial: For the purpose of this report, a clinical trial is defined as a prospective, biomedical or behavioral research study of human subjects that is designed to answer specific questions about biomedical or behavioral interventions (drugs, biologics, treatments, devices, or new ways of using known drugs, biologics, treatments, or devices). This definition incorporates the major points of the term as defined by the NIH, DHHS, ICMJE, ICH GCP E6, FDA, WHO and the clinicaltrials.gov website. 2 Other types of clinical trials include prevention, treatment, vitamin, symptom management and radiation.

IV - Sponsored Programs Extramural Funding Requests 2nd Quarter, Fiscal Year 2017
The Office of Sponsored Programs reports that GHS faculty and staff members submitted the following 25 proposals, totaling $4,358,400, during the second quarter of fiscal year 2017.
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Dr. Melisa Holmes: The Duke Endowment GHS Bridge Health Center for Teens and Young Adults The Bridge will establish an accessible (close to public transportation) and teen-friendly health care center that provides same-day contraceptives and timely and effective prevention and treatment for conditions threatening the health and wellbeing of adolescents and young adults. The 3-year vision is to establish a new model for adolescent healthcare in SC, serving as a collaborative and multidisciplinary center for comprehensive adolescent health care. Project Dates: 06/01/2017 – 05/31/2020 Total/Direct: $1,612,352; Cost Share: $631,660 Dr. Bruce Lessey: National Institutes of Health via Michigan State University Collaborative Research for Pathophysiology of Endometriosis This proposal will examine the role of inflammation and immune dysfunction, specifically related to activation of STAT3, in endometriosis. GHS will provide access to human tissue samples including endometrium and endometriosis implants from women with endometriosis and eutopic women without endometriosis. Project Dates: 12/01/2017 – 11/31/2022 Total: $813,280; Direct: $520,000; Indirect: $293,280 Dr. Bruce Lessey: Foundation for Women’s Wellness SIRT1 and Down-Stream Signaling Defects in Endometriosis and Ovarian Cancer This funding will support focused studies to examine the regulation of SIRT1 in the endometrium of women with endometriosis, including key regulatory pathways involving c-myc, TGFb and miRNA34 (mir34). This study has a high likelihood of identifying a new biomarker for the early detection of endometriosis using less invasive means and may help identify women at risk for ovarian cancer arising from endometriosis. Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health Dr. Sharon Holder and Dr. Benjamin Griffeth: National Institutes of Health A Multidisciplinary Approach to Improve Medication Adherence in Mentally Ill Patients Health outcomes can improve with increased medication adherence, accuracy of medication reconciliation, and reduction of unplanned emergency room/hospital visits. This proposal aims to address factors that can empower individuals with mental illness to improve self-management of their medications, and thus better manage symptoms while adhering to prescribed treatment. Department of Internal Medicine Dr. Bill Kelly: Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) via Clemson University Door Motion and Traffic Flow in Operating Rooms This project will study the effect of door opening and operating room traffic on air flow and potential pathogen dispersion. The study has the potential to provide important information which may be used to inform infection prevention guidelines and operating room design. Project Dates: 01/01/2018 – 12/31/2019 Total: $9,559; Direct: $6,112; Indirect: $3,447 Shannon Sternberg: Medtronic Stroke Retreat and Refresh Camp This grant will provide funding for the Stroke Retreat and Refresh Camp, which helps survivors and caregivers improve their quality of life. In a single weekend, one can expect relaxation, trips, activities, entertainment, laughter, music, games, crafts, and more. Project Dates: 04/01/2017 – 10/31/2017 Total/Direct: $10,000
Center for Teaching and Learning Dr. David Cull and Dr. Windsor Sherrill: The Everest Foundation GHS Resident Research Seed Grant Initiative This initiative will offer support to collaborative research projects led by resident physicians in training at GHS and facilitate the preparation of physicians with research experience and expertise. Through this initiative, the GHS HSC’s three strategic Research Portfolio Areas will encourage research consistent with GHS’s vision to transform health care for the benefit of the people and communities we serve. Project Dates: 04/01/2017 – 03/31/2020 Total/Direct: $375,000
Nursing Academics Dr. Joy Green-Hadden: Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) via Clemson University Expanding the Primary Care Family Nurse Practitioner Workforce with Expertise in Diverse, Rural, and/or Underserved Populations in South Carolina The goal of this project is to increase the numbers of culturally competent FNPs practicing with diverse, rural and/or underserved populations in SC by leveraging a newly established education and practice collaborative agreement between Clemson University School of Nursing and GHS. This project will prepare a diverse workforce of FNP graduates to practice with diverse, rural and/or underserved populations, with an emphasis on determinants of health and cultural competence through a preferred educational collaboration between CUSON and GHS. Department of Family Medicine Dr. Irfan Asif: American Medical Society for Sports Medicine Foundation The Clinical and Economic Impact of a Physical Activity and Lifestyle Medicine-Based Program to Treat Severe Obesity This project aims to determine the clinical and economic utility of leadership and behavioral health strategies aimed at promoting long-term sustainability of a physical activity and lifestyle medicine-based program to treat obesity and prevent cardiometabolic disease. Department of General Surgery Dr. Alfredo Carbonell: Foundation for Surgical Fellowships MIS Fellowship Grant This funding will be used to support the GHS Surgery Fellowship program and is awarded based on criteria of excellence. Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Dr. Scott Porter: Zimmer Biomet Resident Travel Support This proposal requested travel support for residents to attend the Annual AAOS meeting, which provides them with ample opportunities to attend educational sessions pertaining to their specialty and learn more about new techniques, research and technology. Department of Pediatrics Tyner Lollis: Brave Beginnings Neonatal Resuscitation Grant Funding will provide neopuffs (t-piece resuscitators) which have been shown to decrease damage to the lungs incurred when resuscitating small neonates. Project Dates: 10/01/2017 – 01/31/2018 Total/Direct: $57,929 Dr. Nicholas Kelley: Mary Black Foundation Healthy Families Initiative This grant will provide resources to implement the Triple P - Positive Parenting Program, which aims to: 1) Promote the independence and health of families through the enhancement of parents' knowledge, skills confidence, and self-sufficiency; 2) Promote the development of non-violent, protective, and nurturing environments for children; 3) Promote the development, growth, health, and social competence of young children; and, 4) Reduce the incidence of child maltreatment and behavioral/emotional problems in childhood and adolescence. Project Dates: 07/01/2017 – 06/30/2022 Total/Direct: $25,000 Dr. Nicholas Kelley: South Carolina Asthma Alliance M & M's for Asthma This grant will support an RN to gain Asthma Educator (AE) certification by providing funding to cover exam preparation and fees. Project Dates: 05/01/2017 – 12/31/2017 Total/Direct: $500 Lyndsey Hoffman: KOA Care Camps Camp Courage Funding will support operating expenditures for Camp Courage, an unforgettable recreational experience for children and teens with cancer or blood disorders from the Upstate of South Carolina, western North Carolina, and Northeast Georgia. Project Dates: 06/01/2017 – 11/31/2017 Total/Direct: $18,000 Dr. Cary Stroud: Charity Ball Board of Greenville Overnight and Day Camps for Medically Fragile Children This proposal requested support for medically supervised overnight and day camps for medically fragile children and their families, in order to give them an opportunity to participate in a community and activities that are often out of reach due to their illnesses or medical conditions. Dr. Desmond Kelly: Medical University of South Carolina via University of South Carolina Transcranial magnetic stimulation-based neuromodulation for treatment of autonomic dysfunctions in children with autism spectrum disorder The goal of the pilot project is to test the feasibility of a novel neuromodulation intervention based on low frequency rTMS in children with autism. Using a small sample of children with autism (N=24) randomized to active and sham rTMS groups, a variety of outcomes will be examined including physiological indices (e.g., heart rate, HRV, skin conductance, respiration, etc.) as well as parent (ABC, RBS, SRS, ASEBA) and clinician (ADI-R, SCARED) report measures of autism symptoms and social functioning. Project Dates: 07/01/2017 – 06/30/2018 Total: $6,000; Direct: $5,556; Indirect: $444 Dr. Desmond Kelly: National Institutes of Health via University of South Carolina Auditory Integration Training (AIT) in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder This project will investigate mechanisms and test the efficacy of an intervention comprised of a combination of Berard Auditory Integration Training (AIT) in autistic children. The study plans to enroll 100 autistic children, analyze a variety of outcome measures, physiological indices (e.g., HRV, SCL, Respiration, etc.), auditory evoked potentials (N1, N2, P3, Mismatch Negativity, etc.) and parent (ABC, RBS, SRS, ASEBA, Sensory Profile) and clinician (ADI-R or ADOS, SCARED) report measures of autism symptoms and social/cognitive functioning. Project Dates: 12/01/2017 – 11/30/2022 Total: $526,171; Direct: $336,426; Indirect: $189,745 Dr. Charles Hatcher: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention via University of South Carolina Capitalizing on a Public Health Opportunity to Test whether Prenatal Aspirin Use is Associated with a Reduction in the Incidence of Autism Spectrum Disorders The overarching aim for this study is to identify the protective effect of aspirin use during pregnancy in terms of the occurrence of ASD in children. The study will use a case control design and recruit 500 mothers who have an ASD-diagnosed 1-4-year-old child, and 1000 control mothers who have a non-ASD 1-4-year-old child. Bradshaw Institute for Community Child Health and Advocacy Dr. Nancy Powers: South Carolina Developmental Disabilities Council South Carolina Medical-Legal Partnership The project will improve access to information for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families about services, supports and their legal rights. The project will focus on the unmet legal needs of children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (ASD-ND). Clinical providers and students will be trained to recognize social determinants of health, screen patients for non-medical barriers, make referrals to legal partners, and foster increased participation and choices about their community-based services and supports. Roger C. Peace Rehabilitation Hospital Dr. Kevin Kopera: South Carolina Developmental Disabilities Council Youth Sports for All Youth Sports for All seeks to provide more knowledge and greater choices of extracurricular sports for youth with disabilities through three different pathways. Paralympic Sport Days offer a platform to introduce kids and families to Paralympic sports and educate them on the local, national, and international opportunities to participate in these sports. The second pathway introduces a youth adaptive team sport, wheelchair basketball. The third pathway seeks to identify and support athletes who may be able to participate in integrated school sports, such as track and field, swimming, and tennis. Project Dates: 07/01/2017 – 06/30/2018 Total: $55,588; Direct: $35,542; Indirect: $20,046; Cost Share: $18,578 Dr. Kevin Kopera: Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation Junior Wheelchair Basketball Team This grant would fund the cost of wheelchairs for a competitive Junior Wheelchair Basketball team, which is open to youth 18 and under with lower limb, physical disabilities. These youth will enjoy the camaraderie of being on a team, the benefits of regular exercise, and the spirit of competition. Project Dates: 06/01/2017 – 05/31/2018 Total/Direct: $11,000
