MEDICAL SURGICAL UPDATEBy PP May andPP Tony Shilton

HAROLD KYLE, Osteosarcma

omorrow August 4th is his birthday-- he is 17 years old. Last year T

this time he is just like any other kid in the block. full of energy, a rosy life looking forward to the realization of his dream to become his school's athlete in basketball which could be his ticket to a scholarship for college education. His name is

Harold Kyle Agustin, his school's favorite basketball player. His family shared his dreams and looks forward to a brighter future for Harold in the field of sports..

Suddenly all had changed. He started to experience pains which he and his family thought are just ordinary muscles and joint pains brought about by his active involvement in sports. When the pains failed to be driven away by pain medications, he was taken to the hospital for medical checkup. He was later diagnosed with Osteosarcoma.

Osteosarcoma is the most common type of bone cancer, and the sixth most common type of cancer in children. Although other types of cancer can eventually spread to parts of the skeleton, osteosarcoma is one of the few that actually begin in bones and sometimes spread (or metastasize) elsewhere, usually to the lungs or other bones. Because osteosarcoma usually develops from osteoblasts (the cells that make growing bone), it most commonly affects teens who are experiencing a growth spurt. Boys are more likely to have osteosarcoma than girls, and most cases of osteosarcoma involve the knee. With Harold's case it involved the right leg . His right leg was amputated last May 13,2014.

The club is working to fit Harold with prosthetics thru KDF, one problem solved for the family. Harold had undergone chemotherapy and is now preparing for his radiation therapy. He quit school for the time being and hopefully next year he could resume his studies.
